Great atmosphere and live music on a Friday night. Food and bar staff were great. Particularly enjoyed the music at the bar pre band - ‘clubland classics’ blaring out was a unique experience

We wanted a private spot to celebrate the 100th birthday of one of our party. The whole team was very helpful in facilitating this for us, and on the day we had a marvellous luncheon. The food was very good, the service excellent and unobtrusive and we were delighted with the whole thing.

Wonderful food. The roast beef in particular was outstanding. Having to order at the bar is ok.. but the guy behind the bar was rude and unhelpful, refusing to add a starter order after inputting the mains. Shame about his attitude in general as otherwise it was great but service a let down.

We ate here tonight, the food was lovely. The chap behind the bar could do with cheering up a bit, he was verging on rude. My main complaint was a glass of wine was £16. There was no wine list to view the prices. £16 is outrageous for a glass of red wine.

We called in to the Rampsbeck after a long walk one lunchtime. It wasn’t busy, yet the service was incredibly slow and we also waited close to an hour for our food to come out. It was lovely once it arrived, but let down by the delay. The staff were friendly but spent too much time gossiping loudly to eachother behind the bar and were neglectful of clearing plates and glasses away (both on the tables and bar area). It has so much potential as the food was lovely, but the service needs to be improved.

Supposed to do good Sunday Roasts. It was edible, but not great and when asked for extra cauliflower cheese, we were told they don't do that as an extra. So when we asked for my daughters (who had requested none as she has a dairy allergy), we were told they couldn't give us that, just in case she ate it! She's 21 and quite capable of not accidentally eating cauliflower cheese, especially if it is in a separate bowl!

Whilst camping at The Quiet Site (25 mins walk up the hill) we ate here twice in three nights. I have read some of the reviews and I kind of get some of it. The place is relaxed, the staff are super, super friendly, they do not rush you and we were really welcomed. Great rose wine but not inthe fridge so put on ice and served with ice, we went with it but I get it would annoy others. Relaxed pub food but could be better with a bit of organisation. I am not sure who the manager is - but whoever you are it would take very little to score better from all reviews on all counts. Ps the waitress who had come back from tavelling in asia was brilliant!

First time at the Brackenrigg, and as its one of my local pubs, and had recently been refurbished, had been looking forward to it. My friend and I arrived at 11.56, behind another couple in front of us. The couple in front of us were told very abruptly that the pub wasn't open, and that they needed to wait outside until the pub opened ( in literally 4 minutes). The chap asked if they could wait in the doorway ( it was raining outside), and was told no. The young lady 'welcoming ' then said she had thought it 11am , not 12am, but the couple in front left. My friend and I were told we could sit at a table until it opened. I had already been made aware that everything had to be ordered from the bar, so once the pub was 'open' we went to the bar and ordered our food. Whilst we paid separately, we ordered at exactly the same time. I paid £7 for 4 individual halloumi fries and a small pot of mayonnaise, which arrived 15 to 20 minutes before my friends food, which had been ordered at the same time. Food is delivered with no pleasantries, there is no check back, and plates collected without any interaction with staff whatsoever. The welcome was about as warm as an article summer, and it truly is start how you mean to go on. The only plus point was a nice pint of Guinness. Very disappointing.

Hi, We paid a visit to The Brackenrigg Inn on Tuesday 2nd July. for an evening meal. I ordered fish and chips and my husband ordered burger and chips. When it arrived my chips looked like they were the bits from the end of the bag of frozen chips, just a few decent size ones thrown in. They were over cooked and found it hard to put my fork into them. The same goes for the fish it was well over cooked the batter was so crispy, one again couldn't put fork into it with out it crumbling into bits. Had to break the fish with my hands to get some of the fish out. It arrived with little pots of mushy peas, tartar sauce, and what supposed to be curry sauce. it was like water with a bit of flavouring. My husband had burger and chips. The chips were the same as mine. Burger was very basic. We left leaving very disappointed and hungry. Jan .

Visited here after we heard it had been refitted. Decor, fixtures and fittings are nice. Food was fairly decent and came out quickly. We hadn’t booked as it was mid week but quite unceremoniously got told “you can have that one but we need it back by 7:30” fine we thought as it was only 6pm. We tried to order some drinks and again got snapped at and told to go to the bar. Food and drink ordered. Food came out worryingly fast and cleared away even faster with the next course served instantly. We felt quite rushed and an inconvenience as we had taken the table. Done and out by 6:50/7:00. The most annoying thing is we got charged a “discretionary 10% service charge” which we only knew about once we had got our receipt AFTER paying as you have to go to the bar to pay. I wouldn’t usually mind but there is NO TABLE SERVICE! I’ve done half the work for you and then you charge me another 10% on top of what is already quite high food prices without notification until it’s too late. Trading standards issue I think? All in all I won’t be returning as the food prices are too high, the staff are less than impressionable, there is no table service and I get charged more for no reason. As a local I could’ve suggested this place hundreds of times over but I will probably not do so.

I've been staying at the Inn for 25 years. The very expensive work that has been carried out has truly transformed the place. The bar has so much more room and light. The rooms have all been tastefully refurbished, though have only been in one room twice. The food is as its always been, excellent. Though it is surprising and disappointing that there isn't a steak option, other than gammon. Come on, change this! Those that work at the Inn are all great. Customer focused and go out of their way to be helpful. Though sadly at times the demand overwhelms them and queues build at the bar. The major problem is breakfast. All that is available at the Inn is cereal's, tinned fruit, toast and waffles. This is not a continental breakfast. It is poor beyond belief for a £200+ room. So on this visit I took up the option to eat at Another Place just down the road. Yes, they have built a footpath over a field for safety, but sorry, the breakfast experience at the Another Place was poor. There is a lot to choose from, but I wanted a full English. What I got was dry sausage, dry bacon and cold black pudding. Dry like they'd sat in a warming dish for an hour. They don't do fried egg, but the poached egg I had was superb. A couple came to their table and ordered tea and coffee. They went to the buffet and voted with their feet and left. Back at the bar at the Inn, I spoke with 2 other couples who were greatly disappointed by breakfasts at both venues. Overall, I will return because I love the Inn, the views, the refurbishment and the folk who work there. But will bring my own cold meat and cheese, All the best

I've been to the Brackenrigg Inn twice over the past week with my partner and they were perfect each time. Both times I had the vegetarian linguine and it was beautifully cooked and full of flavour. I have tried the soup and fruit crumble of the day and both were delightful and served with lovely presentation. The soup came with very traditional chunky rye/sourdough that was delicious. My partner had the burger and gammon. Both of his meals were exceptionally well done and the gammon was such a gigantic portion and presentation was immaculate to the point where the food could have been used for a photo shoot. It was really cooked to perfection and even when feeling full he carried on eating because it was impossible to stop. The restaurant staff were warm, friendly and helpful and very hospitable.

Meal out with the children, first weekend of trading following extensive refurbishment. Loved the decor, restful and luxurious, new flooring looked fabulous, plenty of seats, normal tables, sofas, bar stools, nicely laid out, a huge step up from before. It was very busy and food was served remarkably quickly. Nice food! Glorious location. Sitting outside when warmer will be absolute heaven. As it was, the sun was shining and it was glorious. But, had it been pouring with rain, a great place to watch Ullswater from on high and hope the clouds move on.

We could walk to this pub from our rented house for an evening meal. My friends enjoyed the choice of local pints. Two of us had the steak pie, rather than being an individual pie it was a generous slice of what must have been an enormous pie. It was delicious, dense with steak but nice and moist too. We went mid week so found a table easily. The pub has fabulous views over Ullswater but it was a bit cool that evening for us to sit outside.

Popped in for a quick drink after walking nearby Little Mell Fell. Had sandwiches with us but was hoping to be tempted by a pub lunch, the pub was empty with a few people sitting outside, no sign of a menu on any tables. Even if there were evening menus around, we would have thought about coming back in the evening as was staying nearby. Just a bit strange they don’t seem to advertise what they have to offer. Barmaid couldn’t really understand us, so we didn’t ask, place deserted inside other than her and another family. Brilliant view of Ullswater and sitting outside in the sun would be lovely on a dry day. Decor nice in pub. Disabled toilet very dated with wood chip wallpaper.

Food was great Service was poor and the barman shocking. Not only was he sarcastic to us and almost everyone that he served during the time we were there. But the crown achievement was that when one of the party had asked for non alcoholic beer he served up a bottle of the alcoholic equivalent. We didn't notice this till he brought the second bottle over to the table. Considering I was there with my pregnant girlfriend and someone that hasn't drank for over 3 years and wanted to keep it that way it was a massive mistake. However when I pointed this out rather than apologising he just blamed whoever had stocked the fridge and took no responsibility at all. If he had used his eyes rather than blundering though the evening trying to be smart with everyone at the bar in a failed attempt to be funny/charming he might avoid near catastrophic errors like that. Again food was great but the bar staff need to be refreshed or pay to have someone there with a bit of modern customer service skills. There are way too many alternatives around Ullswater to be giving such poor levels of service

I was thrilled to find an old inn with rooms with a view of Ullswater for a 2 night stopover on the way home from Scotland. The view of the lake from the carpark is lovely but that is the highpoint. From there on things got worse and worse. Reception is at the end of a short narrow corridor between the bar and a dining area. The staff at the bar could see us waiting in reception and although he was serving someone didn't bother to acknowledge us and indicate that he would be with us shortly. Our room in the main building with a lake view was a little on the small side and although it was clean it was definitely tired and only had 2 uncomfortable footstools for seating. The TV was obscured by the kettle and there was no plug near a mirror which made drying your hair a bit of a gamble. The en-suite is a joke and I'm thankful we didn't bring the cat. It is no more than 3 feet wide and you can't open the shower door unless the sliding door to the room is open as well. Once in the shower - you can't close the room door. Dinner - A locally sourced hamburger - which looked to me like two thin slices of black pudding - could have been Tesco value range and the Cumberland Sausage was tasteless and looked like something the dog left behind curled up on top of a pile of mash. Breakfast - scrambled egg and smoked salmon From its appearance the egg could have been finely minced boiled egg and was not at all pleasant. Overall we thought the food was terrible We left immediately after not eating breakfast having stayed one night even though we had booked for 2 nights. Throughout our short stay the service was perfunctory at best and we certainly weren't made to feel welcome

As it was hot the the lady went in to ask for a dog bowl of water for her dog and was told "we don't supply dog water!!" WHAT!!!!.....So they left without ordering two meals and more drinks and ditto for us.... We have Just had a two night stay and we were quite disappointed to say the least! we have visited this pub for many years and the food has always been delicious but we were told before we arrived that no evening meals were available?- so did consider changing accommodation but was told we could eat at Another place hotel down the round with a discount. This wasn’t so, as on arrival we were told that they were serving food?! We ate on both evenings at Another place restaurant and we would definitely recommend it! Apart from a friendly barmaid at the Brackenrigg, the other staff were miserable and didn’t seem to want to be there? Breakfast was ok! The whole place is shabby and our room smelt a bit foisty the bed was the smallest double we have ever slept in! The Bathroom was new and the best thing about it- along with the view over the Lake With some TLC and welcoming staff, the Brackenrigg could be a wonderful cosy B&B with breathtaking views and the micro brewery- such a shame as it must get so much passing trade, we will give it a miss next time!

Steak and Ale pie was delicious, Fish and Chips were lovely and home made. Batter was really light. What a lovely stop for lunch.

Very reasonable priced pub serving up some nice country dishes, nothing fancy at all, just good pub food. I had the mixed grill which was very good, and the stout ketchup was fantastic. I tried all the ales on offer and were fine for local brewed stuff at a good price.

We arrived quite late but no problem and were shown to a pleasant table in the bar because we have a dog. Excellent menu choices and not all standard pub grub. We had Chicken Chasseur and excellent crispy chips £13.95 and Beef pie and chips (instead of mash) Proper well-filled pie,£12.95, both with perfectly cooked veg. Add good local beer at £3.30 per pint and friendly quick service so this is a place we will be back to.

Wow that pie was epic - slightly over cooked possibly - but awesome none the less.

We arrived at 9.15 PM and realised we had missed the chance of having a meal as the food stopped at 9 PM. Not to be put off we decided to have a drink and buy some nibbles. The barman was very helpful and the beer which is brewed only yards away was very nice and well kept. Everyone who was settling there bills for food said they were more than satisfied and whilst we only caught the tail end of seeing people finish their meals the smells coming from the bar where lovely.

At first it looked like we would have to leave, all the tables in the bar were full or reserved, so grabbed a sit in the other side. Went to ask for a menu to be told that the other side was fully booked around but they managed to jig things around and were able to offer us a table.

"Oh. ¿Podemos pedir algo de comida?" "No". " ¿Oh? " .

After reading some very good reviews on this pub we were convinced to give it a try for our final evening in the lakes. We didn’t book ahead so turned up to see if we could make a reservation on the spot and we were told due to a large number of group bookings we would have to wait till later in the evening. We decided to pop to Another Place for a drink and starter. As we returned to this pub we walked into what can only be described as a pub FULL of angry and frustrated customers.

We stayed near The Brackenrigg for a week and enjoyed visiting in the evenings. We had a lovely meal and there was a good choice on the menu. The pub is cosy and the staff were very welcoming. Dogs are also welcome and we would go again on our next his it to the area.

We popped in today for a pint on out way back from a walk. Service was slow and unfriendly. The beer, surprisingly, was terrible. While we were there we watched twoother people bring pints back to the bar saying they tasted 'chemically'. Two of our three pints were undrinkable. Very disappointing. I suppose it will do well based on location alone but we won't be back.

Rather empty and lacking in atmosphere when we visited (early Sunday evening in January). Lovely range of real ales, several of which are brewed on site. Good food and substantial portions.

My mum came here for her honeymoon in 1978 I think and we have always come back over the years. Recently with my own in the last decade with my own family. In the last few years since it also became a micro brewery, we think it is at its best. Tonight we had steak, fish and chips, burger and steak pie! With a pint or two of their own ale. That sums it all up for me. A great Lakeland pub, fire, great beer and food! In the day one of the best views in the Lakes from a pub! Tonight a great view of Orion’s Belt. Better than all the pubs in Pooley Bridge for me!

Went here about 7 years ago and the service was appallingly slow. Was staying nearby at the weekend and decided that we would give it another try especially being as their website menu has cheese and onion pie on it which is my vegetarian friends favourite. We were shown to our table and were told they would bring us menus which they did about 30 minutes later but cheese and onion pie was nowhere to be seen. On asking we were told the online menu is out of date. Surely this needs to be addressed as most people will book because they like what's on the menu. My friend was most disappointed and had to make do with the veggie burger(only two vegetarian dishes on the menu)she count eat the bun as it was too doughy. On the plus side my Cumbria beef and ale pie was quite nice. We didn't have a pudding as there was nothing we fancied apart from a chocolate mousse which was a tad overpriced at £7.50. I know I will be staying nearby again but I won't be back

The food was decent but the service was pretty slow but we were in no rush. When we received the bill we checked it and they had overcharged by two pints and a bottle of wine to the tune of £25. When we queried it, there was no apology and the waiter just knocked the price down. Glad we checked..............

Ate here twice and no complaints about the food. Really good portions and very tasty. The majority of the staff were great, the couple of staff who I wouldn’t rate much weren’t that much of an issue, the bear was good and the wine was reasonably priced. We didn’t have dessert but from what we saw they looked great and everyone seemed to enjoy them.

On a typical Lake District evening what are you looking for in a pub? This certainly hit the spot … a roaring log burner, a warm welcome with a mix of locals and visitors, good beer and excellent food - tasty, good quality and hearty portions. Travelling alone you always end up talking to those around you and they were similarly enjoying the beer and the food. It’s certainly dog friendly too with water bowls and towels to dry them when you arrive … before they hog the log burner. I gather this has been newly taken on by a family and I wish them well. Certainly I hope it thrives so I can return whenever I am breaking my journey at Shap - which is v convenient just off the M6.
