This place is an absolute shambles, the boiler did not work leaving us without hot water and heating for the weekend, the place was filthy on arrival, all the crockery and pots and pans where dirty, When we told owner that the TV didn't work, he told us to buy one. I would not recommend this place until the owner has brought it up to standard. The advertised hot tub overlooks the neighbours house and gardens, and looks as if it was shoved in the only place it would fit.

We were greeted by the current owner describing us as "the dregs" of her final bookings. Not a good start. My friends bed collapsed in the night, no appology . Owner just said you should not have had such a big pudding.. I appreciate they are moving on but it does not justify such poor service.

Firstly the website is incorrect, this is not an Inn, it's a b+b. It does not have a range of cask ales it only has bottled beer. It does not have a range of fine wines. The food is mediocre and not made from the finest local ingredients. The owners are not particularly friendly, They did not speak to us at all during the evening meal and gave the distinct impression they had just had a row. No-one appeared until 6:30, it was self check-in and the bar did not open until 6:30. There are just three choices of starter/main/pud on the menu. The fish pie was advertised at being accompanied by a selection of fresh vegetables, it was just peas. The Spaghetti bolognese - a strange choice for an English lakeland restaurant - was passable but not great. The Greek salad was very good however as was the apple crumble. The service was the slowest we have ever experienced due to the snails pace the chef worked at. It took 2.5 hours to serve ten guests from a very limited menu. The waitress, Wendy, was extremely pleasant and friendly and did her best to keep the waiting diners happy during their long wait. The rooms were very pleasant, very comfortable beds and nicely decorated. The shower provided plenty of hot water. Our room had a very strong chinese theme to it with a tartan carpet, not quite a lake district feel though. Breakfast was mediocre, the food was self-service from a single bain-marie, no choice of eggs, just scrambled. This was stop number seven on our coast to coast walk and way below the standard of all the other accommodation. Not recommended at all.

Having spoken to friends who had previously stayed here we were a bit disappointed. For those walking the coast to coast be aware that it is about 1.5 miles off the track, which is quite a long way if you have had a long day. Unfortunately they had run out of cask beer when we arrived and some of the food choices had sold out so menu options were limited. However the room was spacious and clean and the staff were really friendly and helpful if we needed anything.

The Inn-Keeper, Jane, went out of her way to help us, though we were only passing through on the Coast to Coast path. Among other kindnesses, she pointed us on our way across the fields to Shap, armed with needed tips for wayfinding. We were truly sorry we weren’t booked to stay at the Crown and Mitre that night, but if we ever pass that way again, we certainly will stay there!

We went to this pub as it was local to our holiday cottage and was also in a walking guide book that we'd bought. We waited outside for 15 to 20 mins as the sign outside said that it did evening meals but only opened at 6pm (18:00). When we finally went in and asked for a table for four the lady arranged a table for us. When we asked to see the menu she tersely replied "Are you booked in?" to which we replied no only to be met with an instantanious response of "NO!". No explaination, just NO! We then asked if she could advise of anywherelse to eat to receive another terse reply of "Go to Askham!" This lady's idea of customer service will drive tourism from the Lake District. The village is in a beautiful setting but with ignorance like this - why would anyone want to go back? Thankfully, if and when we do, we will know to avoid this establishment and I will be telling anyone that I know who is going up there to stay away too. Stay away from here and go to the Punchbowl or Queen's Head in Askham - they're only a couple of miles down the road and you'll be much better off.

Hotel in the middle of nowhere, we read a limited menu and looked at each other slightly concerned. However, the steak and mushroom pie with triple cooked chips, gravy and vegetables was AMAZING, truly AMAZING!! The other guys were VERY happy with the fish pie and lasagne too. So enjoy if you get the chance. The breakfast was pretty good too

Having visited the Crown and Mitre previsly during an Autumn stay in Bampton, as the only pub serving meals within walking distance, we returned this week (June 2019) in the hope of a meal and a few drinks to be told all the tables were fully booked! Fair enough we thought, it was Sat night after all, we'll email to check opening times and book if necessary for another night only to be told it's 'effectively only running as a b&b at the moment' so not catering for anyone other than 'residents' -shame their website doesn't make this clear, nor does the company through which we booked our cottage! My advice, head to the Punchbowl in Askham, much more welcoming and accommodating, the food was far better too!

We ordered one of the real beers and found it be ‘off’ and vinegary. This can happen to any pub, but not the reaction of the landlady who intimated that it wasn’t off although she didn’t even taste it. ‘Are you a connoisseur then?’, she asked rudely. I said my husband knew what he liked. We had the other beer on offer, a very lively beer. I happened to say this, with a smile, but she wasn’t having any of it. No it’s not lively, apparently. Hmm, well a lively beer happens to settle lower in the glass, which it did. Couldn’t believe the response of the landlady who didn’t want to top it up at all. The one star is for the beer we drank finally, which was nice.

Stayed for 1 night while walking the Coast to Coast. Upon arrival we were informed that we did not have a booking for accommodation. Checked the register to find our names crossed out. Our hosts did have an email trail from us, however, appear to have not updated the booking register when the deposit was paid. Fortune was with us as there were two rooms available and we had evidence of paying the deposit. While the service was friendly and amenities fine, there certainly was no apology or explanation provided as to what happened with our booking.

There was something very wrong on the night we were there. There was nothing Thai about the Thai fishcake: more economy Tesco with some salad on a slate. Likewise, the chicken curry was nothing like a chicken curry: more a grilled chicken breast covered in a grossly over-salted tasteless gooey gravy. Sorry, but it was truly awful. The lounge bar in which meals are served is comfortably furnished and the immediate bar area has been relatively newly installed to a high standard. There were no external lights when we left: not easy given the moonless night sky.

Crown and Mitre is a lovely Inn, accessible from Penrith or the M6. Close to Haweswater and surrounded by gorgeous countryside. Travelled there in early March for Haweswater half marathon (winter price offer), ideally located 10mins from the start. Rooms are clean & comfortable, pub/restaurant downstairs is lovely and welcoming, rustic with a big open fire. Food is lovely, good portion sizes and prices. Friendly, helpful staff. However, cooked breakfast portion sizes seem to vary depending on who is working - my mother wanted a sausage sarnie and got a sausage on a plate! Plus, the first day she got a cafetiere of coffee, second morning she had to keep getting cup refilled.

Nice friendly welcome when we arrived for our booking with our friends and our dog. Customers seemed a nice mix of locals and visitors. Tried some of their tap beers which were good.Ate at 8pm and quite a few things were no longer on menu, but luckily none that we wanted! We ordered just two starters - the duck pate and the soup, but only the pate arrived, however this oversight was quickly put right and both were delicious. For my main I had the sausage and mash which was nice, and boiling hot in part due to the heat of the plate, but my husband had the pie which he said was a bit like oxo cubes under the pastry and no gravy to help out. Whether this was due to being in the oven too long, or on a too hot plate I don't know. Our two friends said their meals were nice and as it was their anniversary we didn't like to complain. So overall as in the title a bit 50/50 regards food, but as we didn't complain they didn't get a chance to make amends, so I would go again as most of the food was very nice.

We stopped at Bampton for a night during our recent Coast to Coast walk and ate at the Crown & Mitre Inn at the recommendation of our B&B hosts and how pleased we were to heed the advice. There was a genuine, hearty welcome when we arrived, despite the Inn already being full of diners, and having ordered drinks, we took our table in the quieter dining room. Service was attentive and efficient and our orders arrived in good time. The starters were tasty, well presented and made with fresh ingredients and the main courses were ample for 2 adults with hearty appetites, well cooked and very appetizing. We shared a dish of selected cheeses that didn't disappoint and finished with liqueur coffees. The wine list was compact and well chosen and the Chianti Classico was full bodied and just what we'd hoped for. After dinner we moved to the bar that was now far more quiet and we were able to spend some time in conversation with the manager and chef. We left feeling that we'd enjoyed something special and we would readily recommend others to do the same.

A vital discovery when passing by mid-afternoon; having found the pub in nearby Bampton closed indefinitely, this one was closed too, but the "back at four" sign gave some hope for later on. Fears that this might be a "B&B only" establishment were dispelled early evening when the cosy bar was open and we booked for dinner, allowing time for an evening stroll. Two real ales were available to start and the menu and specials board contained some intriguing and unusual items. My swordfish risotto was fine, but sadly my wife's slow-cooked venison was extremely tough and largely inedible; however, reference to the chef quickly produced the offer of a replacement, while not charging for the original, so all well in the end and we shall certainly return to this charming inn when in the area again.

Visited this pub in early June 2014. We were told when we arrived at apporx 7.15pm they were very busy and we may have to wait a while to eat.The bar experience was very pleasant being offerred tastes of different ales, good start. After 8 pm we asked if we might possibly order our food and we were given a menu. Finally at approx 8.50pm our food arrived. It was ghastly. Two of us ordered steak and ale pie. I found it totally inedible, dried up and tough with the most wierd gravy containing an unbelieveble amount of ROSEMARY in it. Beef with rosemary, ||I don't think so. Another of our party had salmon. The new potatoes served with it were like bullets and completely inedible. Some main courses were served with the accompanying vegetables arriving some 15 minutes later. We complained at the time and when presented with the bill asked for a reduction for the poor quality of the food after the length of time it had taken to serve it. Our complaint was badly received and reinforcements were called from the kitchen to refute our criticism. Eventually they agreed to reduce the £74 bill by £4 because I had not eaten my pie. This reduction was given so grudgingly the staff would do well to remember 'the customer is always right', all they kept saying " was all we can do is apologize" but they couldn't say SORRY or accept any criticism. In answer to the length of time we had to wait we were advised residents take priority in service. If one had been a first time visitor to Cumbria and this being the first place they had dined they would have had a very poor view of Cumbrian hospitality. It is a good job one of our party was born and raised in Cumberland and he knew this was certainly a very poor specimen.

The meals were delicious, I had the steak and ale pie, which came in two choices of size, I opted for the large, having been walking all day, but it defeated me! The panacotta pudding was simply divine. For breakfast we were encouraged to have eggs rather than a full English, and this being our 3rd day my husband went for the poached eggs. I must admit they did look delicious. I opted for the croissants which were warm, and looked home made...they were scrummy!

Booked in advance for evening dinner. The inside of this public house is very cosy and comfortable. The staff are attentive and efficient. There is a really good atmosphere from the other customers who clearly enjoy being there. The food is obviously "home made" and is well cooked and presented. A very enjoyable meal. Certainly one of the best p.h. meals we have eaten (and we have sampled many!).

We called here for lunch on the way to Haweswater. We both chose homemade steak and ale pie, this was served with a good selection of fresh, crisp vegetables and proper chips. The pie was packed with steak and mushrooms and served with delicious gravy. It is served in two portion sizes and to be honest, the smaller portion would have been more than enough!!. This was washed down with a pint of well kept Keswick Brewery real ale (there was a choice of 3 real ales, 2 Cumbrian and Black Sheep Bitter). The welcome and service was excellent and very attentive. The bar and surrounding rooms are nicely decorated and furnished and are very inviting. A real gem worth hunting out.

Stayed here for a couple of nights for my wife's birthday mid November and ate in both evenings. Wendy the manager (ex-owner) couldn't have been any nicer, nothing too much trouble. The food was first rate on both evenings, I loved the Thai style noodles in particular. Good breakfasts too, home made granola followed by full English, delicious.

Stayed here to break our journey from Central Scotland to the Peak District. Had a very pleasant chalet type room at the rear of the property with easy access. Enjoyed a drink and an evening meal in the bar with our wee dog. We both had the sirloin steak with was generous in proportion and quite tasty.Staff friendly as were the locals. Would definitely return.

We met family for lunch a half way meet up to celebrate my son’s 18th birthday. We were very well looked after and all the food was lovely. Thank you so much for chilling the champagne for arrival, we will be back.

We dined in Bustro 1871 as part of a short break holiday at the Appleby Manor Hotel. What a lovely break this was. Our first after the Spring and Summer lockdown. The food was really good and the waiters attentive. Appleby Manor itself is a delightful hotel full of old world charm. We are returning there again for my wife's birthday in October. I shall again dine in Bistro 1871 as well as sampling the gourmet restaurant at the hotel on our second night.
