Stayed here for one night as a last minute break, this was one of only a few places left available in the lakes area at the time,at 1st i thought it was gonna be too far out of the way for anything but im so pleased we stayed there. The place is in a lovely little village and the pub itslef is very cozy with a log burner and a real retro bar full of character, the staff work very hard and nothing was any trouble esp the scotch guy,he never stopped. I wouldnt hesitate to book again,we had a great night and returned home feeling recharged and refreshed.

We stayed in one of the static caravans for a wedding across in Askham Hall, when we arrived and was taken to the caravan they didn't have it ready ( beds weren't made and was cold in there) so the bar man said he would sort it while we were having dinner, so we unloaded the car and then left him to it. They gave us 30% off our meal because of the caravan not being ready. After dinner we met up with the wedding party, when we returned to the caravan my daughter found her charging cable was missing, when I asked in the pub the next day the staff were not helpful, when asked to speak to the manager no one seem to know when he would be in. On leaving I spoke with the cleaner who had made the beds and she said she would never take anything but would check the bar, and returned to our car with the charger, my daughter knew it was hers as it had a black mark on it, the woman said it had been plugged in behind the bar, SO HOW DID IT GET FROM THE CARAVAN TO THE BAR!!!!! Caravan could also do with some refurbishment as the radiators where all rusty and also some of the fixtures, cobwebs hanging in the rooms, Absolutely shocking would never recommend this place.

A last minute booking but glad we did. The staff were very friendly and professional. The room was very comfortable with a modern bathroom. We didn't have an evening meal but saw plenty of people who did and the food looked excellent. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. We had driven over from the perpetual cold dull north east spring to try to get some sun in the west. We had stopped at the Punch Bowl for lunch and to get warm before starting a walk on to High Street. Although the staff were friendly and welcoming unfortunately the place felt cold as the outdoors and the fire was hardly alight. I had a sandwich and my wife had soup and a roll. The food was ok and tasty enough, however I very much share the opinion of the last reviewer in that if you are paying £14 for a sandwich then it needs to be a very exceptional sandwich! The soup too was expensive and the accompanying bread roll was very merge. We left the pub grateful the sun had come out to warm us up, and feeling negative about our experience and wishing we’d simply bought a bite to eat from the shop. I do have some sympathy with pub landlords trying to make a living in difficult times with rising cost. And it is good to see traditional pubs surviving and I genuinely wish the punchbowl a long and prosperous future. However it will be a very long time before this particular customer will be returning. Despite inflation and rising prices fortunately for us there are still plenty of alternative places that offer far better value for money where you leave with a warm happy feeling. Not cold and shortchanged!

We stopped for lunch after lovely walk through Lowther Deer Park. We wanted to sit outside as it was a beautiful day. We ordered drinks and paid…but the process of ordering food was rushed…we ordered bacon and Brie sandwich which we were told came with chips and side salad. We were just moving outside with our drinks when we were called back to pay. £13.95 each. On arrival meals were basic….McDonalds style chips a few dressed leaves and a basic white baguette containing bacon/Brie. Don’t intend to return….not good value for money in my opinion.

Following a walk around the Lowther Estate. My husband and I made a reservation for the ‘Punchbowl Inn’ at Askham. Staff were friendly and attentive and our table by the roaring fire was an added bonus! I choose chicken, bacon and leek pie and my husband ordered fish and chips. I must admit that the chips that were served alongside the pie were the best chips I have ever eaten…and I’ve eaten a few!! The pie was filled with meat, lovely flakey pastry…delicious gravy….fantastic!…could not fault it! My husband was impressed either the fish and chips too but the pie and chips were a meal that was faultless and can’t wait to return to sample the pie and chips again!

Mixed experience…. Stopped in for a pint a few times on the way back from Haweswater. Beer selection is great! Curly haired bloke on the bar was really knowledgable and cheery. Please please please turn the heating on or have the open fire on as it was absolutely freezing!!! We’ve called in twice now and it’s been the same, we were going to try the food this time but the kids wouldn’t settle as it was so cold and at 6pm the radiators were stone cold. It has sooo much potential, but please can the owner/manager have some respect for their staff (who are great) and customers as there was people sat in their top coats and hats.

Lovely country in . Staff were exceptional . Very warm greeting both on arrival and the breakfast host was also very friendly and polite . Breakfast was very good quality ingredients - except bread used for toast . Not sure why someone uses a budget slice of bread when all the other ingredients were very good . Evening meal was very good . Why we didn’t give it a 5* . Our room was ok . Lovely bathroom clearly new and spotlessly clean . Bedroom itself was a bit worn . I moved the lamp on the bedside table and it was filthy . The room it self needs a lick of paint and maybe the view of what looks like a skip area should be tidied up . I would not hesitate to return there though so thank you

We were looking for a cosy night away when in the area and rather than a big hotel decided on the Punchbowl. We were visiting Lowther and the area and didn’t realise how close this is. Situated in a quaint tiny village this place is a gem! Very friendly staff, room was brilliant and the food just delicious! How refreshing to find somewhere where you didn’t feel ripped off or people couldn’t be bothered. Our room was spotless, comfy bed and great bathroom. We opted to have dinner at the Punchbowl which was just delicious we just couldn’t finish it!! Lamb Henry and Cumberland Chicken were to die for and were perfectly cooked. A super find in the middle of nowhere. We enjoyed an exceptional sunday lunch - the portion size could be halved and it would still be value for money! Our bedroom spotlessly clean, a very good size and again, incredible value for money. Staff all very friendly and accommodating. My only suggestion would be touching up the paint work that's a tad shabby in the hallways and the mattress is probably overdue for renewal.

We were really looking forward to coming here for Sunday lunch but we’re very disappointed. 16.95 for their Sunday dinner was not justified. 6 small carrot batons. 1 tiny broccoli head. Two tiny pieces of cauliflower.7 runner beans between two people. After trying to cut the piece if broccoli between us I thought this is ridiculous and informed the server who brought some more vegetables. We asked for mustard and he came with one teaspoon of mustard in a pot. So my husband had it as not enough for two. Gravy so thin it was see through . Not many eating on a Sunday lunchtime . Was it a one off day I don’t know ? Certainly won’t be eating here again . Felt ripped off . Wish I had taken a photo of veg that was served to us .

We recently stayed on a two night Travelzoo deal. The hotel is finished to a lovely stylish clean standard. The pub food was lovely, fresh and tasty. We did find it a little steeper price wise to what we are familiar with. The room was nicely finished and comfortable. The light did pour through the window when cars drove past at night and also under the door from the hallway which kept me awake. The radiator in the room was technical and it wouldn’t come on so we were happy to have an electric heater too. Breakfast was continental, it was nice but we felt it was missing some meat and maybe more exciting cheeses. The coffee was lovely. The staff were friendly and helpful but out of the three we dealt with we felt one of them wasn’t so professional and sincere. Shouting things to the kitchen before the door was closed and generally a bit rude. The check in /out times were a touch late/early. Otherwise well done Dukes head and travelzoo too.

Great service, the staff looked after us well and made us feel very welcome. Really big portions, we had a starter and main each but couldn't manage a dessert. Good value for money.
