I ordered the beef chilli nachos for around £5 - it was served in a little box which was filled with nachos smothered in lovely salsa, chilli and guacamole. It was lovely, too much for me to finish off...so i took the rest home for later.
and the moretti is only £3.50 so what's not to like
This one is a bit confusing, is it The Golden Lion or is it The Lion House?
It was the Golden Lion the last time I was in Allendale and TripAdvisor reviewed this venue in 2021, but anyway, let’s press on with this review, a table for two booked for 1430 for the lady friend, myself and the two dogs in tow.
We arrived in good time, we were shown to a nice little table located at the back wall of the main bar near a very warm fire, a lager shandy and Guinness were immediately ordered in.
We had a look through the Sunday lunch menu, but soon afterwards the first disaster struck, our first choice of starters, the Harissa lamb was all gone! So I opted for the baked Camembert sharer as second but the second disaster struck as this was also all gone too! So we begrudgingly had to go for the cream of mushroom soup, I wasn’t interested in the chilli prawns.
I opted for a three-meats lunch, but disaster struck a third time as it turned out there was no roast chicken left, all the unexpected walk-ins had eaten everything, so I had the beef and pork loin, the good lady having beef. Extras of cauliflower cheese were ordered.
Puddings ordered were sticky-toffee pudding and double-chocolate brownie, thankfully I wasn’t too stuffed to eat this!
All food arrived within reasonable time and thankfully was better than we’d expected, portions were huge, the soup was good, the meat beautifully seasoned and the puddings satisfyingly sticky and sweet. Service was very attentive and super friendly. The venue itself a good mix of locals and walk-ins creating a lively atmosphere and good ambiance for a Sunday afternoon.
Happy to recommend The Lion House but I advise getting there earlier than we did, as random walk-ins might have been in and gobbled everything prior to you getting there!

This is a fabulous village pub, doggy friendly throughout. The food is delicious - best to book for Sundays. Outside there is a large beer garden. Only 2 parking spaces, but off-street parking is available close by.
Excellent lunch, there was a good choice available and it was reasonably priced. I have a milk intolerance but there was still a good choice on the menu as they have vegan choices too. Friendly staff and great service, would visit again.
We were looking for lunch after a trip to Lindisfarne and noticed this has excellent reviews. Popped in, few tables outside but noisy road and spindly chairs put us off! So glad we ventured inside.... what I can only describe as beautiful cakes and sandwiches on display with excellent prices too! The side salads looked amazing like a top class deli! We ordered 3 cheese and ham sandwiches....tasty warm foccacia with loads of filling and side salads...a very good value at £9 as it was a huge meal! Can of coke on this warm day came cold and with a glass of ice at only£1.50 !
We holiday regularly in Northumberland and have been horrified by the jump in prices around the coast (and indeed in land!) And to find this quality at a good price was such a great surprise! Well done owner and staff! We will certainly be back to try the amazing cakes and strawberry cheesecake we saw but couldn't manage today!
Extremely rude bar man ( wouldn’t even say man - boy) , stood at the bar waiting ages for drinks when it wasn’t even busy he could see we where waiting and still continued to ignore us and stand at the other side of the bar. Spoke to customers very abruptly, there was multiple customers complaining about his behaviour. When the bar closed we were told to ‘get out’ and then ‘wait outside’ which isn’t an issue the issue is the way he speaks to customers. It could have been said in a very different way. Other than his behaviour the drinks and place was really good for a chill night in the Pub. This boy needs trained on how to deal with customers before there’s non left.
The Pack Horse Inn is a gastropub in the village of Ellingham, a short drive from the A1. There is limited parking in front of the premises, but on street parking is available too.
There was a set menu for Sunday lunch with 2 courses for £27 and a little more for 3 courses. There was choice for those not wanting traditional roast, including fish and a vegetarian nut roast. The main menu is more extensive.
The meals were all well presented and tasty. The flavour of each part of the dishes was distinct yet complimentary. Vegetables were fresh and cooked with some crunch left in them. Several vegetables with each meal. Decent portion size.
A range of beers and wines is on offer.
Service was adequate and with a smile.
The bar is small and it felt awkward waiting for drinks before being shown through to the table. We were booked for lunchtime opening time and had to wait for the front door to be opened which was after our booked time. The restaurant warned up after the fire came to life but it was cold when we first entered. The separate bar and dining area gives the bar the warm feel of a traditional pub.
Price was as expected in this popular area of Northumbria, a little lower than at the coast. Confident enough to post the menu outside the entrance.
Excellent fish and chips ,proper chips ,fish excellent flakes ,the owners are lovely, service again brilliant, grub spot on I’ve just moved there and it’s my regular place,,
Excellent cafe. Clean, fabulous service, good food. Had the breakfast (which was huge!). Well
cooked, not greasy at all.
Lovely selection of gifts in the cafe/ shop.
Haven’t been here for years but, having taken a slight detour in my journey, it was well worth it.

Unassuming little place. Beds were comfortable, breakfast was tasty. And they some how had the largest, softest, whitest bath towels I have ever had the pleasure of using.
