Came for Sunday Lunch as a family of 6 plus dog. Found this place on opentable, booked the day before. The food was amazing, everything was delicious and cooked to perfection - and just the right portion size for both the mains and dessert.

We're staying in Ellingham for the week so wanted to try the local pub for Sunday lunch. We were not disappointed and I don't think you will be either. We chose from a set menu, 2 x courses for £27 or 3 for £32. Despite the set menu, there was enough choice, even to satisfy those strange folk that don't like a traditional Sunday roast. We ate 2 courses, main and pud, 2 of us having the roast and one fish and chips. It was all beautifully presented, cooked and proportioned. Service is attentive without being pushy, and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. And like Arnie, we'll be back.

Beautiful food and fantastic service… Just one small negative which I’m sure can be rectified, and that is the smell of dirty oil what seemed to be dumped into the conservatory from the extractor outside. We could hardly breathe it was that bad, yet I was there a few weeks earlier and did not face this issue…. Fire alarm in the kitchen did go off as we were leaving so maybe the extractor www blocker causing the smell? Never the less, I’ll come back again Steak and ale pie - 10/10 Pork chop and sausage - 6/10 Fish and chips - 8/10 (batter a little too thick) Complementary starter - 10/10 (lovely touch) Kids meals - 10/10 great size portions Service - 10/10 Cleanliness & Decor - 10/10

We were staying nearby and decided to book for Saturday night. Booking is definitely recommended! The food was delicious with fantastic sized portions. The menu was also reasonably priced for what you got. We received a complimentary canape to start, toasted focaccia with taramasalata. We had the sourdough bread, soup and fried halloumi to start. The portions were really hearty with us receiving half a loaf of bread. We followed this up with steak and ale pie, chips and wilted greens. The meat in the pie was slow cooked and the gravy was delicious and very rich. The portions again were exceptionally generous, so much so that unfortunately didn't have room for pudding. A brilliant find and we would definitely recommend it.

My husband and I were staying in Ellingham and twice ate at The Pack Horse. The first was the most fantastic Sunday Lunch - beautifully cooked and very generous portions. Really enjoyed the crayfish cocktail starter. The second visit was a Wednesday evening - another great meal. I really enjoyed the chicken breast wrapped in bacon with peppercorn sauce. The service is friendly and efficient and the dining area has a lovely feel. Would highly recommend the Pack Horse.

We were staying at Doxford Hall and were given this as a recommendation for eating by another guest. We were not disappointed! It was very busy so I would recommend ringing to book a table. The pub is in a lovely location just a few minutes drive from Doxford Hall. It has a warm atmosphere and the staff were welcoming and friendly. We were shown to our table but also given the option to have a drink in the bar first. We decided on the steak & ale pie and what a pie it was! No skimpy portions here and a huge plate of freshly prepared green vegetables and an extra little pot of gravy. The pub uses local produce and the food is definitely a cut above your average pub. We would have tried a desert but the pies finished us off! Would highly recommend anyone to eat here if you are in the area.

We visited on the first night of our holiday and first impressions were good. It's a nice traditional pub, the staff were friendly and the menu was interesting and promised locally sourced produce. The problem was the food failed to deliver. My fish and chips was a nice fresh piece of fish but the batter was slightly soggy while my wife's Coldrife lamb and flatbread lacked flavour and the flatbread was greasy. Both our portions of chips were undercooked. A shame as we were keen to like it and support a local business. Hopefully the chef was just having an off night.

Okay but not the best experience. The food was lovely but the staff were rushing around like headless chickens and didn't have the personal experience we were hoping for. Unfortunately they messed up the starter by giving us olives instead of almonds. The main was lovely, we had chorizo and pork pasta and my partner had a lovely and juicy steak. The pudding was hugely let down by using tinned apples and burnt crumble topping. They need to work on this dish especially and put more care into it and flavour. Atmosphere was nice. Overall .... Good... But not great.

We stayed just one night breaking our journey from Scotland to East Yorkshire and really enjoyed our short stay. The pub is small and has just 5 rooms. Our room was upstairs to the front with a delightful sitting area with 2 wicker chairs bathed in sunlight through the window. The room was quite large for a small pub with a relatively new en-suite shower room which was also roomy. Tea and coffee making available in the room and a small wall mounted TV. The restaurant has a very good reputation and our experience justifies that reputation both for dinner and breakfast. The room rate including breakfast was £95 which I though was excellent value. The evening dinner for 2 starters (tempura king prawns) 2 mains and one sweet plus drinks and wine came to £60, which again was excellent value considering the ingredient quality, presentation and quality of cooking evident. The bar area was small and cosy. The draft beers offered including my personal favourites of Black Sheep and Timothy Taylor's Landlord. My wife and I enjoyed our brief stay and would certainly recommend The Packhorse to others.

We’d heard good things about The pack Horse but frankly I don’t know why. The food was well below average, the steaks chewy and overcooked, the vegetarian option, clearly not made on the premises and microwaved so that the pastry was soggy. The white wine, a Pinot Grigio which I noticed being poured behind the bar from a large container, was undrinkable. We were told on arrival that the table was needed in an hour and a half, despite this not being mentioned when we had booked. On top of this the waitresses, although pleasant enough, were not wearing masks and the tables were only a metre or so apart. The general impression was of a place that didn’t care and was trying to wring as much as it could from the current tourist boom. We are locals and won’t be returning.

A special occasion, my mother’s birthday, this place really let us down. The venison burger still had it’s plastic packaging on it when it was served so we sent it back, very dangerous. When the burger came back with a melted Stilton topping, the Stilton wasn’t melted. The pork belly crackling was inedible, the beef burger was poor quality and the chips were clearly frozen oven chips. We couldn’t fault the staff and their willingness to correct the errors. However, the manager didn’t even bother to apologise or approach us. Please avoid this restaurant.

The place itself is lovely. The food was a bit of a let down. My husband ordered a steak which was battered to death, really thin and in no way looked like a sirloin steak. I had steak pie which had a huge lump of gristle in it. The veg looked lovely, green beans and cabbage but it had garlic in it which was overpowering and spoilt the meal. The chips were undercooked. Very nice location but tiny room. Space between end of bed and wall was too small and had to throw my case on the bed to get it to the other side. R4 had no table for the kettle which had to be boiled on the floor. I also noticed that the fire door at the top of the stairs had a lose strip which in my mind would stop it being a true fire door. Taking your lively two year old grandson (and his parents) out for an evening meal poses challenges. But the Pack Horse rose to them magnificently. In terms of the lad, nothing was too much trouble. What’s more, the staff seemed positively to enjoy having around for the evening. It’s true that by some miracle there were no meltdowns, but even so, their welcome and warmth was outstanding by any standards. Booked a couple of weeks before staying as part of a long weekend tour of Northumberland and didn’t know what to expect. We parked on the road directly opposite with no problems at all. We were really pleasantly surprised, the room (no.5) was very homely, spacious and clean with a nice bathroom. The bed was a bit firm but each to their own, plus the TV was very very small - worth pointing out but didn’t affect our stay at all. The food at dinner and breakfast was superb - you could tell that high quality local ingredients were being used. The only negative for us was the noise - we knew staying above a pub would potentially have some but it was very loud until after midnight - I think this room is directly on top of the bar, so maybe the worst affected, but it was at the ‘hear every word’ level as people got louder closer to last orders! Never the less, we’d certainly return if we come back to the area as the value was fantastic.

We were staying fairly local to the Inn and the reviews in the cottage and on Tripadvisor and as hey are dog friendly it was a must to give it a go. It has a lovely relaxed feel and a contemporary look. The menu was interesting but quite meat focused so we chose squid and the goat's cheese dishes for starters. The squid was fine but uninteresting; the goat's cheese dish was much more unusual and very tasty. When we ordered the steak and ale pie we were told there was no pastry so it had a potato topping and then it came with chips! The beef filling was very tasty and with a proper top would have been excellent. The lamb chop came with liver and black pudding; this was overall very disappointing. The chop was excellent but the liver so overcooked we couldn't eat it and there was very little black pudding. The minted new potatoes were roasted and hadn't seen any mint and there were few other roasted veg. Because of the meat overload there was no room for dessert but they were mostly chocolate based so not our cup of tea. It was a very pleasant evening and great to see so much local sourcing but maybe our expectations were too high.

My husband and I celebrated our 10th anniversary at Blossom Plantation pods and the host recommended we visit The Pack Horse for our evening meal. The staff were lovely and the food was excellent. My husband had salt and pepper squid and cod with prawn, Salmon and spinach gnocchi and I had chicken supreme and it was all delicious. Definitely worth a visit.

Boke a table in advance, and was not disappointed, The roast beef was superb and the service second to none (thank you, Olivier); the next time we are in the area we will call again

We enjoy going to The Pack Horse, so keep returning! The welcome from the staff, particularly Liz and Emma encourages us to go back as the drinks, food and atmosphere are relaxing and fun. We've had another delicious meal this evening and highly recommend.

I stayed in The pack horse Inn the night before and the night of a friends wedding with my husband and baby. There was no running water the first morning so a kettle full of hot water in the bath had to suffice (this was not anyone’s fault in particular but an apology would have been nice). I had to ask three times for a crib to be put in our room (had already requested this via email months prior) and when I asked if they could get some fruit in suitable for my 6 month old for the second morning, I was told yes and then ‘the chef forgot’. Considering all this when I went to pay I asked what kind of discount would be given and initially was told by Louis (the very unfriendly manager) that it ‘wasnt their fault and it’s an old pub’. After half an hour of very calm chat from my side I was told to ‘not threaten me with trip advisor’ ‘there’s no need for screaming and shouting’ and ‘I’ll call the police if you don’t pay’ (to which we asked ‘and say what, we are still here?’)

Had dinner here mid week for four, the service was only matched by the high quality of food. A really first rate dinner and choices in the menu were varied and interesting. Would not hesitate to recommend this first class dining experience.

The food and service were exceptional. My friend is vegetarian and gluten free and they made a special curry which was lovely. I had fish which was beautifully presented and very good. The staff were very friendly and we will definitely be returning - also nice you can take dogs !

Whilst on our holiday we were looking for somewhere local for a Sunday roast dinner, the Pack Horse seemed to be getting great reviews so we called in, we should have booked ahead as there was a christening on but not to worry we sat in the bar area. I ordered a pint of the local ale which was very nice. The ladies behind the bar were very friendly and showed us where we could sit. I ordered the beef roast dinner and my wife had the pork, all locally reared. Our daughters had the sausages. The portions were big which gets a big thumbs up from me. The food was delicious and everything was cooked to perfection. I have to say it’s one of the best Sunday roasts I’ve had for a very long time. The christening party was a large one and I’m guessing most are from the area but they were very friendly as I can say the vast majority of people around here are. I can’t recommend the Pack Horse highly enough if you are in the area call in, maybe call and book first as you may not get as lucky as we did.

Excellent food and good surroundings. Four in our party and starters were rather a long time coming. However, we received an apology and were offered a free drink to compensate. An all round pleasant experience and are going again.

First visit after tip-off from friends. Eye-catching menu and local produce, excellent service, lovely dining environment, and the food was delicious, hot and well-seasoned. One of the best pub-restaurants in this area and we've been to most of them, so obviously we'll be coming back. Almost perfect, still worth 5 out of 5, but it would be nice to have more fish dishes, but the menu changes daily, so next time...?

While staying at a nearby hotel I was looking for a pub to get some food and found this place. It looked a bit rustic as we walked into the bar, but we're then led to the beautiful conservatory. The food was lovely- apparently the burger was the best my husband had ever had, as was the service. If we are ever up that way again we'll be back.

An excellent place to stay, a traditional village pub. Our room was warm, clean and comfortable, with everything one needed. The restaurant offered a menu of variety, reasonably priced, well-presented and very tasty. The staff were friendly, cheerful and helpful. Overall we would return and highly recommend this pub.

Having taken my son up to Edinburgh Uni the day before we were looking for somewhere to stop for lunch on our way back to Lincoln the following day when my partner spotted your sign. You squeezed us in despite our lack of reservation. The food was very good, the lemon posset and summer berry compote a particular highlight... The barman was lovely and it was a great atmosphere. Just one teeny weeny pointer: a fork as well as a spoon was really needed in order to eat the dessert! We look forward to visiting again over the next six years of my son's course.

We tried to find restaurants in Ellingham but Trip Advisor said there were none. Fortunately the owners of the cottage we were staying in said the Pack Horse was good for meals. It was so good we eat there three times in five evenings!! The menu varied slightly each evening so there was always a new dish to try. Very friendly service, good beer and sensible wine list. Thoroughly recommend as a very good pub meal.

Visited with my son and my parents. Set in delightful village just off the A1. Lunch menu has most of the standard pub staples. All the meat is sourced from their own pigs and cattle. Our meals were generously sized and well cooked and presented. Price was about £10/ head. It's also dog friendly too! Definitely worth another visit.

Following a trip advisor search we tried this pub whilst on holiday and we were definitely not disappointed. The food was delicious, homemade and the meat from the herd in the field outside. The staff were very friendly and the service was excellent.

Played today, Mon 26th August, Great layout, but sadly the greens are diseased and awful, and the tee boxes are terrible, very expensive bar, and no food being served, even though there was a competition on, and the bar was busy, Sadly one to miss in the future.

We visited Hexham yesterday and found this café in the Market Place, after a lovely River Tyne walk. It was quite busy at 1pm but we didn't have to wait long for our table. The girls made us feel very welcome and worked so hard while we were there clearing tables and getting everyone seated as soon as possible. My husband had a bacon sarnie and I had a ham and mushroom omelette which was so light and fluffy, delicious. Coffees were great too. Plenty of choice on the menu and great prices. Doggy friendly too with a treat for pooch 🐾

What a welcoming, hospitable place. If you ever need cheering up, this is the place to go. We were made welcome immediately, and tony the owner had us in stiches from the start. Everyone there were so friendly, and what had started as an intended short visit, led to us staying to closing. Met some brilliant characters, who all just made our day. Dog friendly too, which was an added bonus to us. Can't recommend enough.
