Stayed here for 2 nights, rooms were extremely basic and lacking any quality furnishings and accessories. They were howeverc clean, thank goodness. At £100 per night with no breakfast, to sleep in worn out poor quality double beds, cheap furnishings, we thought the stay at the Ship was poor to say the least and a total rip off. Very very disappointed.

The Ship Inn is a cozy pub in Wylam, England, located in the north east corner. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, the owner, Joanne and our waitress. Sophie were so friendly and helpful that we would eat there often if we lived in the area. A delightful place with wonderful patrons, we had the best fish and chips ever, excellent soup and salad, and another tasty IPA beer. We sat for a couple of hours and talked with the locals and the people who worked there and were treated like family. A very warm and comfortable place.

We came here when it had just opened under new management and it was second to none. We couldn't fault it, and recommended it to all our friends and family. We came back today thinking we were in for a treat. Sorry to say, it has not kept up its standards. The food was cold. Even if I say the mash and turnip is creamy, it was spoilt by how cold it was. Even the roast potatoes tasted like yesterday's cold tatties. Such a shame, because we really loved this place.

Arived at 5-00pm on a Sunday for a work visit next morning. Only to be told no food was available. Then was told no breakfast was included despite it being clearly stated on the booking site. Ate at another pub and returned to go to bed as I had an early work appointment next morning. Had to leave at 6-00am. Then found out there was George Michael tribute singer on and the windows were rattling till 11-15pm so didn't get a wink of sleep. Room being clean was the only pleasant surprise about this place.

Ok well I can honestly say the food here is the best meal out I've had in a very long time! I usually need to cover food in salt I cant remember the last place I ate that actually seasoned their food. This place however I didn't need to touch the salt cellar. I had oysters to start and they were delicious that was followed by the rare pork chop with black pudding crispy pigs head and Savoy cabbage. The cabbage was the best I've ever eaten, the black pudding had a black butter glaze which I cant describe as anything other than outstandingly flavoursome. The pork chop was moist and tender and a joy to eat! The pigs head was finely shredding pork (like pigs cheek meat) in a crispy coating and again every bite had my taste buds dancing. I have a small appetite and can never clear my plate and it was difficult to chose what bite to have next incase it was my last I managed to eat 90% the pork chop was huge so my hubby finished that for me and agreed the tenderest chop hes ever had. We were meant to eat elsewhere and they had overbooked so when we arrived they told us they had booked us a table here! I can only say I'm so glad because I dont believe anywherelse would have had me get so excited about food as the ship did!! Will definitely be back next time to stay overnight. The place is immaculately clean warm cosy and inviting on a winter night with lovely friendly staff

I had seen a great review of the food here a short while ago and so, today, my wife and I made the short drive to try it out. The reviewer was right; it's a bit special!Wylam is a lovely little village, well off the beaten track but, on a gray and rainy Wednesday lunchtime in November, it was hardly surprising to find the place empty. There is a car park at the back but I failed to find it and so managed to find a space on the main road. This is a pub. Upon walking in. it looks like a pub. It feels like a pub. It has TV screens and a big bar like a pub. This isn't a restaurant; it's a pub. Until you eat. It's a very comfortable place to site for a while and, for beer drinkers, it has a great selection of real ales as well as the usual fare. But we had called in for the food. The menu is brief but competent. We had considered picking up my mother-in-law on the way but she was busy and it's fortunate really as I doubt that there was anything on the menu that she would have leaped at; there's no battered fish and chips nor mince and dumplings. And she's of that age group who will tolerate fresh smoked salmon but consider it to be inferior to proper salmon, from a tin. I don't say that to be disparaging; it's just each to his own.We both chose the Scotch egg as a starter and it was pretty good. It was perfectly cooked (not as easy as it sounds) although my own preference is for a black pudding based case rather than the haggis used here. The home made 'broon sauce', was pretty good too.My wife's celeriac soup was spot on. A large bowl of thick and very creamy soup, laced with onion and with a truffle jam on top. The sourdough bread was just perfect and the butter was 'proper' too, although it could have done with being taken out of the fridge a bit earlier.I had a croque monsieur, and if you think that a glorified cheese and ham toastie isn't enough for lunch, you haven's seen this one. If anything, it had too much, strongly flavoured, cheese and so was just that tad overpowering but, wow, packed with succulent flavour and, again, packed onto that brilliant sourdough bread.Lots of TV chefs tell us, constantly, how important it is to use really good quality ingredients in cooking yet, without the skill to put it all together, perfectly, time after time, the result will be less than stunning. The chef here (picture proudly framed on the wall) pulls off this trick with aplomb, all the more pleasantly surprising because of its setting. Did I mention that this is a pub?The cost, with a couple of drinks, was £30 which was, in my opinion, pretty good for this quality of food. The Ship Inn may have been empty this lunchtime but I have absolutely no doubt at all that during tourist season or at holiday time, it will be jam packed. And rightly so. So please don't tell anyone about the food here; I'd like t be able to get in next time we visit!

The Ship Inn is simply outstanding! We dine here a good few times a month in the main restaurant and decided to book for a special family lunch for 19 (yep a big group). We booked the newly convert barn to the rear called ‘The Shed’. With its own private kitchen, log burner and chill out area, it’s the perfect place for a private gathering. The quality and consistency of food was as truly superb as ever! Paul and his team in the kitchen really do take pride in delivering home made food from the best freshly prepared ingredients. Kelly and the front of house staff give a warm and friendly welcome, and nothing is too much trouble! Our family lunch started with fantastic canapés and burger sliders; all home made to the highest standard. Our mains were sharing plates, including two incredibly delicious slow roast (overnight) lamb shoulders, which literally melted in your mouth! Deserts of Brownies, a beautiful pavlova with strawberries and a lemon tart bursting with taste! Paul and Kelly made our family lunch such a memorable event! We couldn’t recommend The Ship enough... it really is food heaven! Thanks to you both!

We've had evening meals at The Ship before but only recently been on a Sunday. The roast dinners are excellent with a good range of delicious, local meats as well as veggie and vegan options. The meat is perfectly pink and the side of veggies is so tasty - I wish I could make them like that at home! For me, the roasties could be crisper and the (huge!) Yorkies softer but my other half thinks they're perfect as they are. The game pie was epic too - so full of bold flavours and the hot water pastry was spot on. I can't describe how pleased I am by faultless pastry! Heaven. The gin menu and wine selection are great as well, although I can't profess to be an expert in those areas, I liked what I drank. I just wish I had space for more than one of the delicious puddings.

Visited in Bank Holiday Monday for their BBQ Special. As always Kelly and the team were brilliant. Sun was out so we took the dog to sit in the beer garden. Staff attentive and in hand for anything we needed, including some fresh water for our furry friend. The food was amazing. We are a greedy pair so ordered the lamb, burger and half chicken to share. Amazing! All proteins cooked perfectly with the correct amount of seasoning. The pickled Cabbage coleslaw was also a highlight. We'll be back again very soon for our regular Sunday lunch or Saturday steak night.

Outstanding value for money. The roast veg that accompanies the Sunday lunch is more than a bit good, while the friendly and helpful staff make the all round experience very enjoyable.

Overall really lovely place! Little traditional pub feel. We ordered the feast menu £25 a head.. most definitely worth it if you like a little bit of everything!

Visited last night to attend a unique event, with some friends. The idea was that the chef worked in partnership with a local business/ charity to upcycle food that would have been destined for waste. The food is donated to The Pickle Palace and usually goes to their pay as you feel markets. The aim of the event was to spread the word about the amount of food that could be used is wasted, and to showcase the skills of the chef. And oh did he do that! We were encouraged to all order different dishes to be shared, each one a delight. Prawn cocktail, hummus,ox cheek fritters, spicy chicken wings, bresaola to start. Then came pork and chorizo tagliatelle,Moroccan lamb stew and the most delicious faggots, all served with imaginative and different vegetables.Just when we thought we couldn’t eat another morsel, out came desserts ! White chocolate cheesecake, bread pudding with proper custard and apple crumble with gooseberry and elderflower ice cream. At the end of the meal we were invited to pay what we felt it was worth, which was’every penny!’We would all like to take our hats off to this clever and talented chef, and to The Pickle Palace ladies for the work that they do. Also worthy of a mention are the friendly, knowledgeable staff who made it all look effortless, though I’m sure it wasn’t.I hadn’t visited this restaurant before, but will most definitely return to sample the normal menu. Thank you all for a great evening.

This a cosy typical pub with efficient staff. Our Sunday dinners came with beetroot, cabbage, mashed carrot and separate leeks on a cheese sauce. Most of the adults enjoyed this but it was less popular with the kids. Be warned, the lamb and beef were very pink although the halibut was voted 'delicious'. Puds were lovely, if a little lacking in the custard department :-).

The pub in Wylam that we normally visit no longer does meals and the landlord whole-heartedly recommended The Ship instead. It's a lovely, well-appointed pub with an upscale menu and prices to match. The service was perfect, and we had the pub to ourselves. The drinks are way over-priced, but the food was very good. They offer the most authentic Caesar Salad that I have ever had complete with anchovies. My husband had a burger that was overpriced as it did not include a side like chips or salad. £30 for lunch is a bit dear for my purse, but it would have been fine for an evening meal.

We visited today for Sunday Lunch and it was amazing. Great quality of food cooked to perfection and in a manner that you walked out feeling that you had eaten some incredibly tasty food. You also felt that the portion size was plenty for anyone. Your choice of meat or fish came with loads of vegetables which were lovely.

Played today, Mon 26th August, Great layout, but sadly the greens are diseased and awful, and the tee boxes are terrible, very expensive bar, and no food being served, even though there was a competition on, and the bar was busy, Sadly one to miss in the future.

We visited Hexham yesterday and found this café in the Market Place, after a lovely River Tyne walk. It was quite busy at 1pm but we didn't have to wait long for our table. The girls made us feel very welcome and worked so hard while we were there clearing tables and getting everyone seated as soon as possible. My husband had a bacon sarnie and I had a ham and mushroom omelette which was so light and fluffy, delicious. Coffees were great too. Plenty of choice on the menu and great prices. Doggy friendly too with a treat for pooch 🐾

What a welcoming, hospitable place. If you ever need cheering up, this is the place to go. We were made welcome immediately, and tony the owner had us in stiches from the start. Everyone there were so friendly, and what had started as an intended short visit, led to us staying to closing. Met some brilliant characters, who all just made our day. Dog friendly too, which was an added bonus to us. Can't recommend enough.
