Ladhars Fish Bar in Northumberland

Great fish and chips. Portions are of a very good size. Been several times and never been disappointed. Curry sauce and mushy peas are also very good.

We ordered large cod and chips each, for a delivery, which took an hour, which was fine. The cod was OK, a bit dry, and the chips were lovely, although luke warm. I thought it was quite expensive, but I was very annoyed that there was a £1 administrative charge and £2 delivery. The delivery fee was absolutely fine, but last time we were here, earlier in the year, I don't remember the extra £1 charge. For that reason alone, we will not use Ladhars again.

Called in as we were in the area,I've been several times and have never been disappointed, big thick piece of cod, crispy batter all cooked fresh to order, huge portions, will always return, so will look forward to the next time, a quick run down the road to eat them overlooking the sea. Bliss!!!

Not really a traditional chippy anymore as the menu is massive with burgers, pizzas, kebabs, etc. Fish and chips were OK for the price, and the portions were large. Only waited a couple of minutes for 2 fish'n'chip take-aways, so suspect fish had been sitting in the warmer for a while - batter was not crispy as when freshly cooked.

Staff were pleasant enough and the food is cooked to order. The fish were quite big but at £7 each they should be. The chips were good but there was a lot of batter on the fish. It wasn't the greatest. Have had a lot better to be honest.

Just about the best chippy that I have come across for years. When they offer Large Haddock you can believe them. Tasty and clean.

Very impressed. Good size portion of freshly cooked haddock and chios. Crisp batter,t ender fish,lovey chips . All cooked fresh when ordered. Could not wait to take them home so sat in the car and had them straight away. Will defintely be backagsin soon

Excellent quality, large portions, we shared the 6 Cod Bites meal, nice chunky white fish, highly recommend! We will be back.

Stayed in town for weekend and went here for fish and chips on Friday. Walked from caravan park, busy-loads of staff, prompt service and food still hot when we got back. Fish was big and tasted great along with the decent portion of chips-not greasy.

Had haddock and chips, the batter on the fish was soggy and unappetising very little taste I don’t believe the fish was fresh as it was so lacking in flavour at best it had been frozen fish but more likely old, I suspect the chips had been left over from lunchtime, the fish was hot as it is cooked to order but the chips were cold also had curry sauce which was tasteless very disappointing and cost £22, very disappointing

Was looking forward to traditional fish & chips and this place did not disappoint. Delivered to our caravan for a small charge was a bonus.

I had the half chicken, hubby had cheeseburger and chips. The chicken was cooked to perfection. Sometimes we get the fish bites which are also yummy. Chips are always nice too. Hubby said the cheeseburger was also lovely. Highly recommended.

Good quality and sensibly priced fish and chips which were cooked to order. We didn't have to waot long and it was worth it.

First time we have tried this after reading good reviews. All I can say is some people must eat anything: the batter was soggy, fish was brown overcooked and indigestible it just crumbled it was so overcooked. Would not use again

Nice fish and chips bought here good portion also bought kebab which contained lots of meat. And amazing box of salad to go with it I liked the salad in box rather than just thrown on as some places do. Defnitly worth a visit

Fresh burger buns. Too much chilli sauce. Chicken fillet had greasy batter so picked that off. Meat patty nothing special. Chips tasted okay but a bit limp. Salad on burgers fresh.

Staying in a local caravan site, we walked along the cliff tops into Newbiggin and created quite an appetite. We ordered a large cod and a large haddock and my goodness, they were the best we've had anywhere, ANYWHERE. light and crispy batter and perfectly steamed very large fish inside, we've now insisted my parents come up today (round trip of 150 miles) so they can try them too, and we get to have another meal. Brilliant service and great value, you'll be hard pushed to beat them.

Ladhars opened early during Lockdown as rules permitted and it has been our little token of occasional culinary sanity! Yes, they take cash, however you can down load an app and pre-order which is a very sensible idea. Each time we appeared, they have a ticket queue, keeping everyone outside, unless you are ordering. With the beach so close, the quality is very good and portions equally generous - beating their more touristy competitors towards the City.We make sure that we do not come too often, simply to keep our diets in check. They are a definate understated gem and this is coming from someone who has eaten at some interesting places around the world.

Nice local fish and chips lovely with the Gran kids on the beach that is what life is all about. They will only take cash but there is a cash machine outside the Coop on the high street not far away.

My son and daughter ordered 2 fish & chips and 1 fish bites and chips for us as it was Father's day, as a treat for me. They praised Ladhar's saying the food was really good. We ordered to pick up and went to the beach to eat them. The chips were lovely however the fish batter was bendy, chewy and full of fat that you could squeeze out; not just on mine but on all of the fish, I can only think that it was fish left from the night before and re-cooked, SHOCKING! when these places put the £sign before offering decent food which is paid for by hard earned money. They are not the only one that do this and from now on I will return request freshly cooked produce when I order food. Never again!

We first called into Ladhars a few weeks ago as we where having a trip out of the house, and decided as the weather was perfect we decided to go back to Newbiggin beach again. As the food was so good we decided to call in again for lunch. At the moment they only allow 3 people into the shop at any one time,so you may have to wait. All good is cooked to order so it's perfectly fresh. The quality of the Fish and Chips is perfect, well worth the wait.

Firstly, absolutely excellent fish and chips here, everything cooked to order. Unfortunately though I am against paying by cash during this period and infact it is against government advice. So to be told its cash only is unacceptable. There is only one reason a business is cash only and I'll leave you to decide why that is. They also had no batter for the chips and everyone was asking while I was there. Unbelievable, make some bloody batter! It's not hard!I'll still be back but found it totally bizarre that they were so strict with social distancing then to say they only accept cash is idiotic

Having just moved to the area someone recommended this as good for fish & chips. I’m not a huge lover of fish & chips but I thought I’d give the chicken tikka kebab a try. I’ve now had it 3 times! It’s addictive! My husband has cod & chips which he says is lovely. The batter isn’t too thick and it’s always very fresh.

Just had a delivery and I can honestly say it was awful, We normally use their shop in Newbiggin and get super fish and chips, this time I wish we hadn't bothered. Paid for a large portion of chips which NEVER arrived and my fish was more than soggy batter stuck to the carton. We where order number 3 for delivery at about 17-45 turned up at 17-10 looking forward to a great meal what we got was really poor and won't be using this service ever again. micannemac

Been using this place for few years and never really had any issues but disappointed with last order.Husband ordered pie and chips and the pie was dry and only had a part pastry top and it was squashed flat.Not often my husband won't eat something or bins food bit it was uneatable. Hopefully a one off

You can always tell a good Fish and Chippy..there are always people in there, and this place is no exception! Twice we visited at different times, and twice we waited about 10 minutes to 15 minutes...but the wait was worth it, TOTALLY BOSTIN!They cook and prepare all the usual Fish & Chip shop food, it tastes so fresh, and hot!

We ate from here twice during our stay in Newbiggin. The food was all excellent. The portions were generous and very reasonably priced. We recommend trying the deep fried mars bars for a real holiday treat!

Really large portions of fish and chips at a reasonable price. The fish was flaky and really tasty. Only issue was that batter and chips weren't crispy but that might have been because they were takeaway and maybe got soggy in the paper. They were still good though.

Lovely food. The batter was different to what we are used to and was gorgeous - light & crispy. The big plus for me was it didn't raise my bloods (I'm type 2 diabetic) which is definitely a first for me. They do cook many other things besides fish n chips. Well worth a visit.

Sunday 4.00, having travelled up from North Yorkshire. Had looked on Trip Advisor prior to visit & it didn't disappoint. Fish & chips with curry sauce - Large portions, food piping hot & of excellent standard. Service very good. Very short walk to benches looking out to sea. All round first class. Will definitely visit again if in area.

Great fish and chips, haddock was absolutely perfect. Plenty of benches and picnic tables looking out to sea, so I recommended heading up to Church Point car park to enjoy proper seaside fish and chips.

Always good sized portions. Fish is cooked good. Chips are ok. I’ve had better but not often. We often get home delivery which is alway fast and efficient.

We were in newbiggin on sea for the weekend and Ladhars was recommended to us by our host. My God was it immense! We got fish and chips and ate them on the promenade, Chips portion was huge and the Fish was epic! So fluffy and light it was hard to get on a fork! So tasty. Great value too.

Chips were hot,fresh but 2.00 a bag was a bit expensive,but still worth a visit. It's one of a number in the village but definitely worth a visit

We were in a big party and decided to go to for fish and chips (which was recommended by one of our friends). The lady behind the counter looked as though she wasn’t happy in her employment. When we asked for more fish to be out in, her reaction was abrupt and rude. She then proceeded to serve other customers who can in after us. My son waited 20 mins for our food. I had to leave the establishment as I was getting extremely angry with her persona. When we eventually got back to our caravan much of the order we had placed was incorrect. The food was ok but customer service was disgraceful.

Generous portion of chips - not greasy. Went well with the jumbo sausage and the curry sauce (not too spicy) Nice spot to eat them too - overlooking the Couples statue at Church Point.

Often call in after walking the dog along the pier on an evening. Lovely chips,not greasy,never had anything else from here but always looks nice in the fryer windows. Lots of salt and vinegar on the chips,then back to the sea front to eat them before driving home.

This chippy has lovely fish & chips, sausages ect. Though I can't get in myself as it's got a big step. In this day & age whys it not wheelchair accessible!

Extensive menu, the cod bites are excellent value, the batter is lovely and crisp and the fish and chop portions are large. Just walk around the corner and eat them on the seats facing the sea, bliss.

I came with my family and it was a big mistake. Parts of most of our orders missing. Long waiting times. Soggy and undercooked chips. Batter is greasy and not nice. Cheap... but obviously for a reason!

Have used this place before when in the area, and used it again on Monday and it was much better than previous visits don’t know it it’s been taken over or what but what ever they did don’t change it brilliant. Daughter had sausage and chips and she loved them I thought try the kebab mmmmm meat was amazing went for salads instead of the chips and had the chilli sauce. All fresh and tasted great would use this place over the other ever time were in the area. Chips are great also, polite staff very clean looking place and prices good.

Called here when we were staying in Newbiggin by the Sea. The staff are friendly and cheerful. The shop was busy when we arrived but we were served quickly. Fish cooked fresh for each customer. Massive portions. Sat and ate them by the sea wall listening to the gentle waves on the beach...lush

We were visiting the area so we thought we'd give them a try! The portions sizes were fair and the chips were really tasty! My Dad had a donner kebab and he said the meat was the best he'd ever tasted! We had the battered mars bar which was fantastic! We wish we lived locally so we could visit again it was lovely!

Wow! Excellent choice of menu everything you could think of - even deep fried mars bar! Hubby had haggis, I had cod and mum had haddock. All freshly cooked. Fish was that big they had to bend the tail to get it in carton. Good value for money, and knowledgeable staff as asked about the area as visiting in a few weeks time. Was lush eating our lunch watching the sea.

Had heard good reports about Ladhar's so thought we would give it a try, Food was Cooked to order(Haddock and Chips) and was ready quite quickly, asked for an extra Tray and was informed that will be 10p extra(really), Fish looked quite big and chips were plentifull and quite tasty, however Fish although tasty was thin and slightly overcooked was not as soft and tasty as it could have been, overall not bad but not the best in the area as far as we are concerned, may try it again if in the area but would not make an effort to go there.

We visited to pick up lunch as we were pushed for time. The waitress that served me was lovely. My order was cooked fresh and it didn't take long at all. The portions were good, the chips were really nice and the place is clean, well presented and friendly. Good choice on the menu. I would go back, nice chippy.

As we all believe and say, fish and chips always taste better by the sea. So after a few hours on the beach we visited Ladhar's. As we weren't excessive hungry, we asked for 4 small portions of fish and chips. This was greeted with a stern reply, by the women serving, stating that they only did large. She did not crack a smile or eye contact. Maybe having a bad day. After a considerable wait, she proceeded to wrap the order without asking if we would like salt & vinegar on any of them and consequently had to unwrap them when we made the request.I thought that it may have just been us that she was rude to, but give her due, she remained consistently rude to all that entered. Needless to say, it certainly spoilt the taste of the food and rest assured we will never visit again and would advise the same unless this member of staff is retrained. Curtueos, polite service cost nothing, but means the world to the customer.

Stayed at Sandy Bay & was recommended this place by one of the staff in the nearby asda. So glad she did. Staff are super friendly & the fish was delicious

Bit of a wait, but it was busy.Staff very friendly, had a good laugh when we asked for a 'saveloy', as apparantly in the North it's known as a 'Smokey'.Very reasonable prices, huge portion sizes.All the food was cooked to order, therefore was still hot by the time we got it home.All in all, very pleased.

Visited recently wasn't really impressed. although really large portion size, chips really dry. Fish was large was ok bit greasy. I have to agree with a previous review, staff were not very friendly and lady servicing texting on her phone while people queuing to be served. ?

Willie whale sized fish perfectly cooked. Pies,sausage, scampi and more at lunchtimes. Kebabs and Pizza in an evening. Reasonably priced and great staff. Only downside there is no seating area, carry out only, but on nice day promenade just around the corner with seating and sea views.

Had haddock and chips and couldn't eat it all. Also ordered cod bites and chips for niece and large portions. We went on Good Friday around 6 and there was a queue. Haddock freshly cooked. No complaints. Good price, but then we are from the south of England so everything up here seems cheap.

I went for the first time on good Friday and I should have known better as it was the only chip shop with no queue! Is was £14 for 2x cod and chips with 2x cans of pop. There wasn't a lot of chips but the cod was very large however the batter was that thick and sloppy in order to eat the fish I had to take off all the batter. it could have been better if there where a little more chips and the batter was thinner and crispy

I have lived in Newbiggin for a long time now and theres a few things that really bother me about this place,the staff are really rude and abrupt not a please or thank you ever and the lady with the ginger hair that works there is by far the worst. Always miserable and rude its obvious she doesnt like working there and feels the need to take this out on the customers. The prices over the years have risen steadily but the quality hasnt. We had fish and chips last week and the chips tasted like they had been there since the previous week, they were so horrible we couldnt eat them. After the experience we had we have decided to travel and take our business to Gormans from now on. I have no intention of ever going back... horrible people

I went last week and it was very good and the staff were great especially a member of staff called "Radjp" I believe was kind and helpful it was also very tasty especially a battery sausage

Good food only downside no choice in size of fish you can only get large yet you get a choice on chip portion but fish was lovely moist with thin crispy batter chips were nice well worth a visit.
