The best restaurants in Harpenden West St Albans East of England

This is our favourite cafe. We’ve moved from the area and regularly go out of our way to visit. Great coffee. Gorgeous food and welcoming and friendly staff.

We were very disappointed that again, on our second visit to Okka for lunch, the front of house staff showed an incredible lack of awareness of my wife's Gluten and Dairy intolerances despite having made this clear when booking a table and then at the point of giving our order and finally at the moment the food was delivered to the table. We made it very clear to the server that the choice of dishes from the set 2 course menu for my wife needed to be both Dairy and Gluten free and checked with her if this was understood. On the arrival of the food it became immediately clear (fortunately) that they had completely ignored this request and had a served up the meal complete with a standard pitta bread and rice cooked with butter. When this was pointed out to the waiter he looked completely nonplussed and had to be told to go back to the kitchen to confirm that the pitta was GF and the rice was simply plainly cooked without dairy. The plate was eventually returned without both rice and pitta and without any apology for getting it wrong. After 10 minutes a side plate of GF bread was brought to the table BUT STUPIDLY COMPLETE WITH A PACK OF FULL DAIRY BUTTER! So sorry but this lack of understanding of even the simplest allergen requirements, both front of house in the kitchen causes grave concern and the lack of training needs to be urgently addressed by the management before serious harm occurs to a customer.

My favourite restaurant in Harpenden.

We booked our room on line and although we realised that the restaurant with rooms was closed on Mondays ( we were there on a Sunday night), we had no Idea that no food would be served from Sunday lunchtime until Tuesday lunchtime, although the pub was open until 9 o'clock on the Sunday evening. We had been out all day and hadn't had a main meal. We are in our 80s and were tired. So for our dinner we had crisps and olives!. The room was very small and dingy, there was no heating in the bathroom, the TV would not work properly on any station. We were charged £100 for this poor room and were happy to leave in the morning for breakfast in the town. We really can't recommend this place to anyone.

Superb pasta and excellent cocktails. A really nicely decorated establishment with very attentive staff. Always a nice experience. They also do great brunch.

Lovely place to get freshly made sandwiches. The bacon and sausage sandwiches are a favourite with the family. Along with the selection of smoothies and milkshakes.

I called to try and book Afternoon Tea for 4 adults and 3 babies, given the name of the cake shop. I was really disappointed to be told that we couldn't bring in more than 1 or 2 prams due to health and safety. There would have been 2 prams and a buggy... It's unfortunately not practical to carry a baby all the way from where the car is parked and then have them sit on your lap the whole time. Might be best if you give the name of your cafe a re-think! Mum's do like to have a life too and we don't get much 'Yummy Mummy-ing' done sat indoors at home!

My family has been coming here for yrs...it was my first visit, definitely not my last. The brunch was excellent and coffee incredible ...the waitress was so helpful and nothing was too much . Great family owned business. I get what all the fuss is about .

Just back from their 'Cockney Night' and all I can say is what a fantastic evening. Nice choice of real ales too.

Smells funny when you walk in. Place wasn't crowded at all, maybe because of the smell ?

I have visited here quite often, and it is always a 5 star experience. The food is really nice and the staff are wonderful.

Big party for Lunch. We pre-booked the meals and the service was quick and excellent. Great play area for the younger kids (and bigger ones too). All in all we had a lovely visit and I would recommend.
