The Queens Head in St Albans

Stumbled upon the queens head on a long dog walk, what a gem, lovely warm welcome great food, great beer. Made us feel really welcome. Will certainly be booking and returning with all the family for Sunday lunch 👍

I came here this morning for work... Jessica looked after me during my visit This pub has a beautiful wrap around outside seating area and is situated right next to the parkland so children could play happily under the watchful eyes of parents... Covered smoking areas and comfy seats An all round nice place to spend a few hours.

Visited for a drink on Christmas Day, arrived early , unfriendly welcome on such a special day and told we couldn’t stand in the bar area despite ample room and that we also could not stand in the restaurant area. We were only staying for a quick drink so we ended up sitting in the cold outside with my 82 yr old mother. Should have left at this point as the smell of raw sewage out there was disgusting , it was pouring with the toilet paper from the toilets into the car park. This restaurant should be condemned, obviously will not return.

Second visit to the pub after changing hands. Main course took 45 minutes to arrive and when we tried to order desert from the "Specials" board we were told they were not available as the menu had just changed (Then why not clear the board)? - the desert took another 30 minutes to arrive! - When I complained to the young lady behind the bar about the slow service she said "There are only two of us on duty - we keep telling the management but they do nothing about it"! The girls on duty were trying their best - they need more staff........... This was very similar to my first experience at the pub - so I will not be going back!!!!

Came here for my Dad's 60th on a Sunday lunchtime. As it was a December birthday, we were able to order from the festive menu. Everything leading up to the day was very smooth from paying the deposit to arranging the pre-order of food. I asked for a couple of things to be arranged for my Dad's birthday which all went really well. We had some news that some guests had a problem with their car and would be delayed. Jessi said she could give us our starters and hold off starting the mains until we were ready. It worked out perfectly. The food was so lovely and everything flowed fantastically. We had one issue with one of the meals but that was quickly rectified without issue. Staff were lovely and very attentive despite it being a busy lunchtime in December. We ended up spending 4 hours in total here, down to the fact that some of our guests were delayed, and we chose to have our lunch leisurely. We didn't feel rushed at all and made to feel very comfortable. We will 100% return for another birthday celebration. Thank you so much for making my Dad's celebrations so special!

Nov 23. Not such a range of craft beers now, but still a good choice of beers. Good lunchtime food. Large pub. Reasonable range of beers and wine. September 2022. Lots of craft beers. Good place to take children for a meal. Access to the common. £££££ Feb 23. New management, fewer craft beers. Still pleasant atmosphere.

Sunday roast was awful. Did get refund though

Smell of sewage upon entering and the pub is too cold to be comfortable without your coat on. We ordered from the lunch menu (which is priced at £7 on the website, but £8+ in reality) but upon paying 2 of our party of 3 were told their food was from the full menu at £12+. The portions were way too small for the full menu item and nowhere near good value. My BLT was good, but a little salty. Chips were cold. Won't be back.

This place used to be better. We went there for lunch during the week. First, I checked the website and it says £7 lunch menu. When we got there and it was more than that. We decided to order anyway - I asked for the fish&chips that in the lunch menu was ~£9.50. When I go to pay they charge me £14.50 saying it was a normal portion, but that was the tiniest fish portion I’ve had in the UK. Not going back there

I've been here a few times now but had never had anything to eat. It was always brilliant for drinks but I have to say the food surprised me, which it shouldn't have done thinking about it. I treated my folks to a BLT and a few coffees and the it was really tasty. I helps also that all sauces were actually served in proper bottles rather than sachets. Everything was hot and the service was second-to-none. My only issue was I never actually asked who our host his name. Shame, as he deserves a lot of credit. Well done guys and will be back.

Lovely venue on a summers day to sit out in the garden. Food lovely decor lovely & staff very accommodating. Will be back again.

Kate & Andrea made our family night out at The Queens Head really enjoyable. The service was great and friendly and proper pub food where you get a good version of what you order with a healthy range of options cooked and presented well by Lud the chef. Thanks for a great night, topped off by the live music, we will be back again!

Booked a table online only to walk into an empty pub and told that the chef had gone home and our booking was not on the system even after getting a confirmation email. Website needs to be updated or made to inform you if the chef has decided to go home.

Shared a rump steak sandwich and BLT both with chips and it was 10/10. Cold and fizzy beer. The staff are wonderful. Perfect lunch.

Had a delicious Sunday roast here with great service from Lauren and Kate who were very friendly and helpful. Had a Lotus Biscoff desert too which was tasty. Parking was easy. Good Wi-Fi. Garden is really nice and cozy with good seating and even an area properly under cover which is cool, plus the garden leads directly onto a beautiful field which you can walk around! Although I don't have dogs, this place is dog friendly and even more so with the field. Would definitely recommend!

Despite confirming that we would be there the manageress said there was no booking. She was very rude. ‘Shovelling’ food into her mouth and made no eye contact. Said she could reopen the kitchen. However, who wants to sit in an empty pub with no atmosphere. This is the second and last time since reopening that we will go there. We wanted to support a local business but it deserves to be closed.

Having booked a table for diner via Open Table we arrived at 9pm to find the whole pub empty and the manager sitting on a stool shovelling food down throat. Our table reservation for 9pm was not registered with the pub and her offer to cook something up for us was not something we were interested in after all who would want wait for food to be served up in a totally empty pub with no atmosphere. This was our second visit to the Queens Head since it reopened under new management, our first visit resulted in vowing never to go back after terrible service and really bad food however we felt that we should give it another try since we would hate to see another pub close down in Harpenden, what a mistake this turned out to be. This pub really does not deserve to stay open.

Jessie was amazing! Her service and positivity is second to none I cannot recommend her enough. The food was incredible very filling and very good quality. Cannot recommend the queens head enough.

Great place for a Sunday roast with the family! A must stop!

We had Sunday lunch here which was great. Loved the prawn cocktail! We sat outside in the garden in the back which was a delightful sunny spot u til it suddenly rained. It’s summer after all! The staff were super friendly and attentive and I highly recommend. We shall be going back again for sure - probably on a quiz night.

Went for a Sunday lunch felt so comfortable & at ease. The waitress Jess was so lovely, didn’t pressure us to order & made our cocktails look beautiful! Even though one drink was just a soda, it came in a beautiful glass with a garnish! The chef made us cauliflower cheese on the house as a side for our dinner! Definitely will go again!

Food was great though the Korean chicken burger didn't really live up to being Korean it was still moist and tasty. Chicken schnitzel was superb, while side salads and chips were also very good. I don't know if the pub has recently upped it's game or if some other reviewers are mistaken about where they ate. The portions were more than adequate, and we are not small people. Great range of drinks, we ended up staying over three hours chatting with the staff. The pub seems quiet on a weekday evening, but has live music some weekends to liven things up. Definitely recommend.

Visited for lunch recently, good menu to choose from. Gluten free options available which is always good. We were impressed with the lighter burger option, with a sale instead of bun. Good sized patio for this warmer weather

Very nice spacious, comfortable pub/restaurant. Lunch was quiet but service good and food to a very high standard. Tables well spaced inside and lots of comfortable outdoor tables and seating. Will go again when back in Harpenden.

Terrible tiny portions. They chicken in the burger was tiny (half a portion). with a single thin slice of tomato and no sauce. Surely the worst burger I’ve had in years I told the waitress and she apologised but charged me in full. My wife ordered the sausages and again it seemed no more than a kids’ portion, and didn’t come with the Yorkshire pudding as stated in the menu. We used to be regulars but not anymore. This has been our last time.

Lovely little pub with quick service.

Jessie was a brilliant host attentive to all our needs . There was 5 of us plus a newborn for lunch yesterday and she ensured that we were served outside in a very prompt and efficient manner . It was my birthday and she provided me with a birthday drink which was really kind of her . She is an excellent part of your team . Best pub in harpenden Friendly staff Lovely food

We came in here Tuesday 4th July for a few birthday drinks after a meal down the road, it's a very nice looking pub -nice beer garden with good beer options, however 9.50pm we were told they were taking last orders - 10.20pm we said "ah we will get one more" but the till was already closed - Shame when it's normally 11pm - us and 2 more tables were pretty much ushered out the door. 3rd time we have popped in, past 2 with having had food (which is okay) This pub could be so much more.

Best staff, nice interior and garden, such a warming and welcome approach to me and my son from Kate and jess. I would highly recommend a visit to this pub.

Come in here all the time, love the food, atmosphere and staff (specifically Jess). Great summer pub with a nice sized garden that backs onto harpenden common. Only niggle is the car park can be tight but there is plenty of parking within a minute walk if the pub.

The food was AMAZING! Our compliments to the chef! We both had the chilli and prawn linguini and it was the best pasta I’ve had in a long time! 100% recommend! We will be back to try more soon!

We would have described our family as "regulars" when The Queen's Head was under its previous management so were very keen to like it under its new ownership too. Unfortunately, we experienced an extremely disappointing family lunch there on our first visit back including an extremely long wait for food (over one hour after arriving) and one member of the party seemingly having his order forgotten. The standard of cooking was also not great for some of the dishes. Such a shame - we won't be returning in future.

Either something drastic has happened to this pub/restaurant or we hit it on a really bad day. We were there for Sunday lunch yesterday meeting up with cousins (8 adults altogether, a four year old and a baby) - we had booked at least 10 days in advance. On our arrival (at 12.30) the pub was virtually empty - and the restaurant remained so throughout our stay. Drinks orders were taken and, after a pause, our meal order - now, although there were 9 of us ordering, four of us ordered the beef, and three the chicken and ham pie so it was hardly complicated (yes, one person asked for no potatoes or yorkshire pudding with his beef and the little boy wanted peas and nothing else with his pie, but these requests were clearly stated at time of ordering - not exactly complex in a virtually empty restaurant, one would have thought?) So we waited ... and waited ... and after 20 minutes or so, a waitress came and told us (very politely, it must be said) that, because the kitchen was under pressure,(??? to my knowledge there was one maybe two other tables eating lunch) there might be a long wait! So we continued to wait and some time later, the food began to appear - and guess what, the person who had asked for just vegetables with his beef was served vegetables with roast potatoes, and Yorkshire pudding and no peas appeared with the little boy's pie!! And to cap it all, rather than bringing him a portion of peas in a separate bowl, the pie was whipped away again - it is to his credit that, after waiting more than 40 minutes for his food and seeing most of the adults served first, he didn't have amelt down at this point! It was then that we realised that one of our number had not been served - he had ordered the roast beef. We brought this to the waitress's attention, who said that it would be there very soon. 20 minutes and two increasingly irritated enquires later, it still wasn't there. Eventually, it appeared -most of the rest of us had virtually finished eating by then - with a very casual excuse that they had run out of things and had had to cook it from scratch. There was just about an apology but fairly grudgingly given. Which brings me to the food. I was one of the 'roast beefs' - I have been served some tough roast beef in my time but this certainly took the prize - grey, fairly tasteless and totally overcooked - couldn't finish it. The people who had the pie were hunting around for the ham in the 'chicken and ham hock' mix and my husband's fish and chips was stolid. We paid up and left - went somewhere else for dessert. This was a great shame - our relatives who live in Harpenden had apparently eaten very well here is the past and were embarrassed to have recommended the place,

Love this place, staff always welcoming and accommodating, if when extremely busy and we popped by as a last minute thing, they squeezed us in no problem. A brilliant pub with a great manager, Jessie. Very hospitable. We had tasty sharing small plates which included a good choice of vegan dishes. As it was Friday we were lucky to have live music too. Roll on Sunday for the roast.
