I was able to book the Garden Room for private hire for a family celebration. The team at Chalk were fantastic from start to finish with the organisation, the room looked beautiful andthe set menu we were able to choose from had great choice and was delicious on the day.

We had a family Christmas party here on the weekend and what a fabulous experience it was. We are local to the Bird in Hand so we stayed at home but there were a few others coming from across the UK, and they had lots of compliments for the rooms here. We had our own dining room for the party - at no extra charge which was an added bonus - which meant there was less stress about making too much noise for other guests. The food from their festive menu was delicious and we had a selection of wine on the table for when we arrived - also lovely. The service was fantastic too, everyone very friendly and welcoming. We were the last ones up (having a good catch up!) and although the team were packing down for the evening, they never made us feel like we had to leave. A real skill in itself. Thank you to the whole team for a wonderful weekend - everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

We came for the Halloween Afternoon Tea and the spooky trail. Parking was easy and the hotel itself looked really luxurious. We were greeted warmly at reception and directed to the Briar, a building in the grounds. The decoration was spectacular, the whole room was properly themed and very spooky! Lots of families were dressed up and there was a great atmosphere. Even the soundtrack had been planned perfectly. Unfortunately, the food for the afternoon tea was really unpleasant. I’d booked over the phone stating I was a vegetarian and reminded staff on arrival that I didn’t eat meat or fish, but I was still served salmon sandwiches. It was so dark in the room that we had to use the torch on my phone to find the food on the stand and in the gloom I took a fishy bite before I realised what I’d been given That made me feel quite sick. Although some extra cheese sandwiches were then kindly offered to make up for it, I was really put off and couldn’t bring myself to eat them in the end. You’d need to be very careful if you were visiting with an allergy or intolerance. Overall, everything seemed a bit limp and stale. The cakes were all too soggy and sickly, even my sugar loving children didn’t enjoy them. There was only one very tiny piece of candy floss between two of them and cutting it in half was a challenge. It got smushed in the process, so then no one wanted it. The best bit were the scones, which were genuinely nice. Our waitress was lovely, but when we ordered refill drinks (which were served by someone else) the squash arrived for one child and never came for the other. We struggled to get the attention of the staff to fix this, but luckily the child dealt with the situation by drinking the milk that had come in a jug with my tea. Unusually for afternoon tea, there’s no choice of teas. There’s also a mandatory 12.5% service charge which was not identified at the time of booking and wasn’t shown on the menu or the website. I don’t agree with forced tipping and this wasn’t a situation where I anticipated hidden charges. Also £7.50 was a larger tip than I wanted to leave, but I didn’t want to make a scene. So I paid nearly £70 for one adult and two children including the service charge and I didn’t feel the food was worth it by a long way. The trail was brilliant. Lots of thought had been put in to it and the creepy walk through the woods and the severed heads in the pond took it to a new level. We came back to see the friendly receptionist- now in character and wearing a mask - for a chocolate prize. I feel so bad that I can’t rate this five stars, because every member of staff was pleasant and helpful and the surroundings were gorgeous. If there was an option to do the trail without the food, we’d love to come back again.

Always a friendly greeting and service, great choice, food always freshly cooked and hot, very efficiently run, and very fair prices - what's not to like? I'm off there to get my lunch just now...

Didn’t honour the deal that was booked. Staff was unable to help & there was no manager on site. Didn’t end up eating there but the food that came out to other tables looked very basic for the price. Cocktails were good, but were on the pricey side. Service wasn’t great, but service charge is automatically added for drinks.

Lovely place, looks fab since the refurb, amazing outdoor space, so much seating areas. Staff were friendly and welcoming, only reason I have given 3 star is because myself and my husband ordered the tex mex sharer which was supposed to have sweet chilli sauce but instead came drizzled with the ipa hot sauce meaning my husband who dislikes spicy food couldn't eat it. We did check the menu which definatley stated sweet chilli sauce. Unfortunatley we didn't have time to send back and reorder as it was a quick stop half way through a long journey and we needed to move on to avoid bad traffic. Other than that small disappointment the place is lovely and we would still return.

Had a desire for spare ribs for a birthday lunch and so googled "best ribs near me" and the Shinfield Arms was top of the list. A reservation was made and a confirmation email was received which was appreciated. We arrived and were shown to our where the menus were perused. Our drinks orders were taken as well as selections from the bountiful menu (a full offering of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes is also available from the menu) from staff members Sam and Darren whilst the day's specials were explained to us by the pleasant maître' d' , Victor. Garlic pizza bread with garlic and herb dip was a great start to the main course and was full of flavour. Mains followed shortly afterwards and the ribs lived up to their reputation! They were tender, tasty with oodles of barbecue sauce - absolutely divine! Slightly larger portions of chips and coleslaw would have been nice as they did not last partircularly long. Other items ordered were the pan-fried calves liver and bacon, the bacon double cheese burger, a prawn cocktail and chicken goujons and chips for the youngest diner which are all applauded. Dessert was graciously declined but a number of tasty dishes were available. Our glasses were kept charged during the entire meal by the attentive staff. A thoroughly enjoyable outing to the Shinfield Arms was had by all and kudos to Darren and Sam for their splendid service. A return visit will definitely be on the cards!
