Brilliant fish and chips! The quality of both the fish and the batter is great. One of the best in the area, from my experience! Chips are good too…

Used to be the best fish & chips for miles, and worth the wait, not now. Chaotic ‘order/ queue’ system. No welcome or acknowledgement when entering and unsure of whether to queue up to order (and get served (like previous management) or order upon arrival then queue to collect. Very confusing, extremely long wait (with no-one telling you what for) Food definitely not up to standard of previous owners. Tried again this evening but this was the last time as no idea whether we’re now supposed to order then sit down, or sit down and wait as lots of people standing around seemingly in same dilemma, and when we tried to ask, were ignored. Left and went to another fish & chip shop at the other end of town where we received amazing service and delicious food. We’ll be going there from now on!

I visited Wai Wai fish and chips on a Friday evening, about 3 weeks ago. I ordered cod and chips. Unfortunately , I had to throw away the chips, they were very dry and tasteless even though I’d asked for salt and vinegar. The fish was fine, luckily. I returned there this evening , knowing it would be quieter and hoping it the bad quality of the food from last time was a one off. I told the people who worked there that I’d had to throw away the chips from the previous time as they were inedible. They actually couldn’t care less! Neither of them said a thing - no apology , nothing. Thinking that he was going to give me a discount, he said nothing whatever and charged me full price ! I even mentioned again how I’d had to throw the previous ones away. This time the chips were marginally less dry . Such terrible customer service . I don’t know what happened to the previous couple who were there for years - they were brilliant , but I am certainly not returning to this place again

These fish and chips are lovely. I’ve now been four times in a month and they’ve been consistently good. The batter is dark and tastes lovely. The fish is generally good and sometimes exceptional with large flakes. The chips are dry and crispy - as chips should be! Two tweaks to improve- 1/remove the fish skin and 2/ more pace with the chip cooking and wrapping to move through customers more quickly on a busy night- I don’t want to hang around for an additional 10/ 15 minutes when I see my fish is cooked!

Regrettably a once great chippy is now mediocre. For years they always seemed surprised when customers wanted chips. 9 times out of 10 there has been a long wait for chips. In the past the wait was worth it. Sadly these days the "fresh" chips are dry, over cooked and horrible.

In the lockdown we've been dependent on the closest restaurants and I walked to Wai Wai's which is not too far on a cold friday morning as I craved nice and warm chippy. They were only doing take aways as we were in lockdown and usually used to see queues outside so was keen to try them out. I was the first customer outside and it was still not opened (they open at noon) so was very happy and expected freshly battered fish and crispy chips. However to my dismay, when I opened the packet, there were layers of paper leaking with oil and the fish was coated with endless batter, fried and refried. The chips were very hard too, you could make out it was refried. It was so bad that it had to be binned. I'm definitely not getting anything from Wai Wai's any more and will not recommend it either.

We have visited Wai Wai a few times over August, September and October 2020 and find their fish and chips to honestly be some of the best I've ever had. The batter is light and super crispy and the fish seems always to be cooked fresh for me/us. The chips are lovely and crispy. Quantity is perhaps a little small (large portion is not much bigger than a small). Very covid-19 safe .. Relatively small menu which is fine and allows them to concentrate of producing a perfect product. This is the best fish and chip take away in the area that we are aware of .. we travel across the town and past 2 more local f&c takeaways to buy from Wai Wai. Highly recommended . Please note that they ONLY take CASH. Not cards / cheques ... not an issue if you know, of course ... but a card machine would be more convenient .. and I'd suggest they get one.

Large portion sizes Great value for money Fresh fish Moist flakey fish with great chips and mushy peas. The batter is so crispy and golden. My goodness its goooood! Cannot believe that we've lived in Wokingham 5 years and have never been to this little gem. My only criticism is that there's no website or Facebook page. These guys should be promoting! As far as I have observed the food in this fish and chip shop is very recently prepared. They cook a few of the commonly bought items at opening time ( when I normally arrive ) and cook more as items are bought. This ensures freshly cooked food with minimal wastage.Unfortunately at busy times this can cause delays. That said the fish is so perfectly cooked Its certainly worth the wait.

Won't be going back again after the owner decided to blatantly lie and say the fish in the oven was recently prepared. Whats the point in lying over that and losing customers? I'd rather she had been honest when I asked the question and I would happliy have waited 10 minutes. No telephone phone orders and with random pening hours , dont go planning on fish and chips on a Friday night unless you drive there first so see if they are open.If you drive over and they are open, and cook the fish in front of you, you should be fine.

Do you want a decent portion of good old fish and chips ? Really, you need go no where else. This is THE PLACE to get it. No arguement. I have lived in Wokingham for 40 years and have been coming here most of that time. The couple who run the place are very welcoming, the little lady ( cant believe I dont know her name !) always has a smile, is obsessively clean and tidy. The place is spotless. If she thinks your piece of fish is a little too small she will automatically add another. Chips are crisp and dry, I have NEVER had soggy chips. If you go for a large portion you had better be hungry. Faultless.

Having been told by several people that this is the best fish and chip shop in Wokingham I gave it a try. First time closed for holiday and the same a few months later. On both those occasions went to the chip shop in barrett crescent which was very good and they do rock salmon which is not always available now days and it was extremely good. Finally went here and they were open last week. Terrible chips all dry with no golden colour, soggy with no crisp and the centres just pappy potato. Miserable staff just probably filling in time tile their next holiday. Barrett crescent for me. It was a Friday and the place was very busy. The fish and chips here is great. When you arrive, there are usually people waiting for their orders already placed but the owner asks you what you want to order. So he can make a head start on the cooking. He then cooks the order freshly,.We ordered haddock and chips, we also ordered onion rings too and although there are always chips available, the owners will cook fresh chips to go with every meal ordered. Service may take a little while, but well worth the slight wait.Fish was not greasy and chips were lovely and fresh. The family run marathons and donate money to various charities.

I like to food from this place but they really, really need to do something about the speed of their service. I have never known anywhere serve 'fast food' so slowly. I have stopped coming here altogether and go to either Barratt Crescent or its even quicker to drive to the chippy on Crowthorne high street than queue here.I reckon average service time from reaching the counter to leaving with your fish and chips is 6-7 minutes, so if you only have five people in front of you, you are going to be waiting a good 1/2 hour. They need to take on a minimum wage teenage helper who help serve up and take money. On a typical evening I think they would more than recoup this outlay from the people who leave, frustrated after 10 minutes of little or no progress with the queue (or who get to the shop and don't come bother even coming in when they see the queue). You would have thought they would have been smart enough to spot this, but I guess they seem so popular they don't need to bother.

We moved to Wokingham a while back & were very pleased to discover we had a chippy within spitting distance of our house. The euphoria didn't last that long! I have never encountered such slow service in my entire life. They need a rocket up their backsides and the owners have no sense of urgency whatsoever. Food is made to order....in theory that's great but you start to wonder why you should have to wait an age just for chips! Surely they understand the basic concept of keeping staple items that would be ordered continually on the go? We see people practically queuing down the road for this place. WHY?! I just cannot understand it as the food really isn't any better than you'd get at any other chippy. It's actually pretty expensive & they only do small battered sausages meaning you're paying £2 for the equivalent of a jumbo which is too expensive in my opinion. Avoid unless you want to queue in the rain for 20 mins just to get through the main door!

Wai Wai is such a weird place! It seems to have a really devoted fan club (kids bring pictures in for the wall!) who absolutely rave about it - but it is possibly the slowest service I have ever encountered in a chip shop, with average food and portions! I have to assume that the fans don't mind waiting 30 mins for their dinner, as each person is served in turn, with the "long orders" that take time only handled then, not put on in advance/while the customer is queueing. I used to put up with it, but since an alternative opened (see my other reviews) I haven't been back and have told local friends to go to the other place as they too complained of the slowness at Wai Wai.

Reading the last review on TA about dinosaur service at this place made me laugh but it's unfortunately so accurate.Fish and Chips are supposed to be a type of fast food and it took me 45 minutes to get served yesterday despite the fact that there were only 8 people in the queue in front of me. I think what is a miss here is a second chip fryer. They seem to always be waiting for chips. When one batch is ready they manage about 8 portions which might only last 2 customers if they are big orders and then everybody has to wait 10-15 minutes again for chips. Such as shame as the food is actually fairly good.

Blimey we are an easily pleased lot in Wokingham, if this is the best fish and chips in town (though there are only a couple of places which do do fish and chips). I may have got a bad batch but the batter was like concrete. Chips very flavourless and they leave the skin on the fish. Skin on battered fish is just lazy, plain and simple. Coming from up north where I guess I was spoilt and good fish and chips shops are in abundance, I have to travel all the way to Godalming or Frimley for a half decent one (WGK is good but my other half usually wants something not on their menu).

My wife and I saw an advert on our local community group saying this establishment was doing very good fish and chips for take away. On the group site people were saying this cost £7:50 each for fish&chips but you had to order in advance. My wife wife placed an order and on the other end of the phone it sounded like an old lady taking the order, she was very abrupt and wasn’t listening to what was being asked and just kept talking over what my wife was trying to ask. Anyway we eventually placed our order. When we arrived to pick it up my wife went into the side entrance and went to pay, the old lady was quite rude and said it was £8:50 each, when my wife said that on the local page it everyone was saying £7:50. She just brushed it off and said she didn’t know about that, my wife only had £15 in cash and as we had only ordered for 2 this is all she had. There were dogs running around the area as well not very hygienic. The price appears to change depending on who you are as my wife went back to the local group and the members are still saying they pay £7:50. First and last time using this pub takeaway the fish and chips were a small portion for the price.
