Lovely little tearoom with delicious scones and English tea. Gluten free options available. Now getting to be regulars.

We've been coming to this lovely old gastropub from time to time over the years and we have generally enjoyed our visits. Our last venture here was to celebrate the birthday of my mother. We were 10 persons, having booked in advance and we were shown to a long table in the corner of the main room. It was cozy but it didn't lead to our being able to talk easily during the meal to everybody. Our waitress, a Polish lady was excellent. Very friendly, helpful and prepared to engage in some light hearted banter. Some of us had starters, things like whitebait and prawn cocktail which were OK. For my main course I had the chicken pie with extra gravy. Delicious. The rest of the party seemed to enjoy their food although we wondered whether there had been a change in chef since we had last been here. Somehow, the food was slightly less impressive compared to our previous visits but we couldn't really put our finger on the difference. Mum finished with an ice cream and a candle and the waitress and owner(?) came over and sang Happy Birthday with us which was nice. All in all we enjoyed our visit in this old, historic coaching inn.

Warmly greeted by Frankie & shortly after I was sat, a nice ☕ & 🍰 arrived 😋😋.. ¡No es la primera vez que he estado ni será la última! El personal es muy amable y atento. Como siempre, la comida estaba deliciosa, especialmente el bistec y el pudín de riñón, era uno de los mejores que he comido y estaba allí con el que mi abuela solía hacerme cuando era niño en la década de 1950. No puedo esperar a volver para una segunda ayuda.

I live in Japan now, so when I’m in England I love to visit a proper country pub, and The Sportsman Inn delivered in spades. The view over the downs was beautiful, the pub itself felt cozy and genuine, and the staff were warm and friendly. I had an absolutely terrific time with a good days walk followed up by an amazing meal and then a lovely room to stay the night. I was moved to hear that this pub is fighting for its survival and is community run. It’s nice to know that the beer I drank was supporting a good cause!

We have always been totally delighted with our visits to Chalk. Great staff, ambience and quality of food. Sadly on this occasion none of these applied. Staff were ‘flat’ service was ‘flat’ and food only just OK. Step up guys!

Wonderful place for breakfast, lunch or a nice hot drink & a cake/scone. 3 areas to sit and eat, lovely and comfortable with a good choice of jacket potatoes, sandwiches, toasties and more. Fresh cakes adorn the kitchen area and have a multitude of drinks to choose from. Find a table, then go to the counter with your table number and choices, the service is quick and food is devine. Highly recommend and a lovey asset though the village.

Great lunch today at this beautiful pub tucked away near the Amberley museum. Friendly welcome, lovely staff, great food and biscuits for my tired dog. I loved that it was a definite cut above usual pub food - my crayfish and smoked salmon starter was delicious, and the sea bass with a samphire risotto was perfectly cooked. And it was super warm and cosy. Definitely worth a visit. We drove but should be easy to do on the train from London too as v close to the station, with good walks or runs nearby. Thanks!

The three course meal we had with matching wines delivered good quality cooking and the service was friendly and efficient.

What a lovely pub. A very warm welcome, great food and wine. The building itself is fabulous and the garden is perfect for a sunny day or evening. Will definitely return.

Nice enough pub, with a reasonable drinks selection and friendly staff. We visited for a family lunch (on recommendation) and the place is very geared up for food. However, the food is absolutely dreadful: over cooked, bland and (in the case of the bao buns that I had) inedibly dry. Seems very popular, for reasons unknown to this visitor.

The food ok but too much, no small portions available at week-ends. Would be nice if the staff were friendly, a smile or how was your meal goes a long way to generate a good business.

Horrible slimy strawberries and hard red blackberry on pancakes wrong coffee latte not cappuccino, not a good experience
