First visit to Chalk. really enjoyed the lunch we had, my husband and I. We had 3 courses. All were perfection. Staff all very friendly, professional, and attentive. Setting is lovely. Will definitely return for special treats. Thank you…!

We came for lunch after a long and amazing walk up to Chantonbury Ring. The lunch was a Christmas gift from our daughter and family and we decided to spend it on my birthday. We were a little late as the 8km walk took a great deal longer than the 90 minutes suggested by the written instructions given on the Wiston Estate website! We were welcomed to our table and a glass of their sparkling rosé boded well for the rest of our experience. Crab Arancino with a fennel salad was a work of art on a plate and totally delicious. Followed by a dish of the freshest halibut I’ve ever tasted, together with tender plump mussels and lovingly envelopped in the most beautiful and freshest tasting vierge. Each flavour sang out joyfully as it hit my tastebuds. A warm pear and almond tart with silky ice cream completed this most delectable of lunches. A faultless meal all served with a great deal of charm. As you can tell, CHALK restaurant proved to be the most wonderful surprise. We shall be returning…..hopefully soon.

Went with a friend for her birthday. The setting is beautiful, comfortable and calm. The food was extraordinary and my fish in a broth was so delicious. The Wiston’s own Pinot Gris was very good too. Service was efficient and unfussy. The desserts were very good. We had a great lunch. Thank you.

We ate a superb lunch at Chalk late September on a sparklingly bright early autumn day. . We just ate 4 starters and 2 deserts, more than enough for a midweek lunch, surely! In brief: Crab arancini; Coppa peaches+++; Pork terrine; Gaspacho, followed by Peach tart with lemon verbena & Coffee ice cream with chocolate+bits. (See pic) The White Ajo Gaspacho (no tomato!!!) was visually exquisite and tasted exquisite too. It will live long in the memory unlike 99% of most fine dining dishes. Fabulous service. Wiston wines are not to our tastes, but this restaurant most certainly is. Our lovely waitress recommended a 2022 Torrentes (Chakana, Argentinian 1000m chalky soil). Again, delicious. Again memorable. (I’ll be tracking some down to drink at home) We ate outside in the flinty sun, coming inside for deserts into their lovely main room. It’s all been done so well, so elegant, using a palate of textures and materials that perfectly echo its context and surroundings. My espresso desert was, yet again(!) exquisite! My partner was raving about hers too, but that has slipped my memory! You don’t often get such a lot of exquisiteness! And to finish we walked up to Chanctonbury ring. I daren’t tell you what word best describes my impressions of that - my pics will do the talking!

Simply outstanding! A meal I will remember for years. Food was exquisite and service excellent. I wouldn’t have necessarily chosen some of the dishes if I had choice on a menu but every course was delicious. Attention to detail in the presentation was off the scale. I was given a gift voucher for the meal as a 60th birthday present and took my bestie. I seriously couldn’t fault anything. Beautiful setting as well.

Superb quality and value! six of us dined on Saturday and enjoyed the estate menu, which had changed since our previous visit. The new pescatarian menu was fantastic, but none of us were disappointed, including 4 diners who regularly eat at the finest restaurants in London and around the world. The celery sorbet was a highlight for me, while others raved about the ravioli. Lovely wine, reasonably priced (for a top quality restaurant). Will definitely return when a suitable occasion presents itself.

We visited to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary:). A happy welcome and a cool table were perfect on a hot day. The dinner was superb, fresh and perfectly prepared. This is a very special dining experience indeed.

Our party of six would highly recommend CHALK, 100% satisfied. Nowhere could we fault our experience and it’s the second time that we have come for a meal. Such a lovely, light venue. The staff are bubbly, interesting and efficient in a really understated and genuine way. The food is seasonal, local and thoughtfully put together. We had the set menu which is good value at £35 for 3 courses. Third visit, consistently good. We'll be back.

We had the most wonderful evening at Chalk recently and recommend dinner here wholeheartedly. Décor and ambiance were perfect, and the staff are lovely; friendly and knowledgeable without being stuffy. Food was fab – we did the tasting menu and it’s such great value (particular shoutout to the life-affirming artichoke risotto!). And of course the wine was great. We tried the estate’s fizz and white wine and both were delicious. We’ll certainly be going back soon!

So what can I say. We’ve been meaning to visit for so long. Boy we’re weren’t disappointed. Venue was incredible, staff were amazing and the food and drink were superb. The cuisine of this restaurant is always excellent and the dishes are delicious. I like the atmosphere and interior, there is no feeling of belonging to the time and the country, cozy, warm and friendly. Such restaurants add points to the whole of Britain as multicultural and at the same time very local, because they are located in the picturesque location of West Sussex in the middle of vineyards and green hills.

Second visit to this fabulous restaurant. The welcome seems always warm, the staff charming and knowledgeable, the service slick and the converted barn stylishly paired back yet remaining wholly intimate and comfortable. The food remains of the highest quality, always seasonal, always delicious, and the menu clearly very well-thought out. Can't recommend this place highly enough for any special occasion, or even a casual post/ pre-walk Sunday lunch, as we just did! Oh and their wine is something else...

Beautiful setting but a very long wait for food, service was disappointing, pasta very overdone . Main courses very average, puddings were much better but because of the timing 2 of our party had to leave before those.

We decided to visit Chalk on Christmas Eve for a small family breakfast & were not disappointed. Its a well designed, well decorated modern restaurant in beautiful surrounds. We were met by a friendly team & quickly shown to our table & ordered drinks. The full English was a delight, the best poached eggs I've had for a long while, the bacon perfectly cooked & the toast perfect. We couldn't fault the service at all. Would certainly recommend Chalk for breakfast & can't wait to return.

Another super special breakfast on Christmas Eve. I had eggs Benedict cooked to perfection and my husband had a full English which he thoroughly enjoyed, accompanied with a delicious glass of sparkling pink fizz. For anybody that would like a special place to enjoy breakfast together. This is the place this time we couldn’t manage the cinnamon heated bun afterwards, but they are also absolutely delicious. Very highly recommended to try it.

We booked for an evening with friends pre Christmas. Upon arrival we were met by a friendly team showing us to our table and explaining how the evening and wine tasting would work. Service was relaxed efficient and timed to perfection. Staff were up beat and friendly throughout service. The food was excellent, as was the accompanying wine, staff had excellent knowledge of both food and their wines. Will go back ASAP

Sublime. We had a family dinner here between Christmas and New Year and found it to be stand-out amazing. We each ordered different dishes for each course, but everything that arrived was superb - flavoursome, filling, and delicious - not a duff dish to be found. Staff were wonderful too, being thoughtful, attentive, and caring, which made it extra special. Already planning to come back once we've engineered a suitable special occasion!

Yes it’s a lovely-looking, friendly place, but the main point of a restaurant has to be its food….and here it is deeply disappointing. Pathetically only three options for main course: one meat, one fish, and one veggie. Worse, the portion sizes are dismal and they charge extra for vegetables which should be included, certainly for the prices they’re charging. I had the duck and it didn’t even look nice, and was way too dry and salty to be edible. Even the cheapest Chinese takeaway could do better. Desserts were good but not great. Wake up Wiston and consider how your customers feel cos if you carry on like this you won’t last long.

We really enjoyed our visit to Chalk. Great service, wine and delicious food, as always. Smoked salmon starter, cod main and rich chocolate dessert all perfect.

Second visit here for my wife's birthday, and it doesn't fail to impress. The fine dinning experience is spot on, food tasty and enjoyable, and service how it should be. Many other restaurants could learn a lot from Chalk - this is how you do it. Thanks.

Excellent food and staff service. A birthday treat for my elderly mother. No pressure to finish our meals and move on as in some restaurants. Extensive wine list to accompany our choice of meals. Was given a £25 voucher for my Birthday, so thought my wife and I could go for a nice breakfast. The restaurant was clean, bright and colourful, so things looked good. We both chose the £16 full cooked breakfast, with a coffee each and I had an orange juice. That’s where it went very mediocre, coffees were OK but in a small mug and the juice tasted very watery. Considering these were all chargeable at between £3 and £4. The food was tasty, but there was only one mushroom (not even that big) and no beans or tomatoes, so the plate looked very dull. With the discretionary 12.5% service charge, the breakfast was just under £50 for two people. Wouldn’t have minded if it had been exceptional, but it was just OK. Wouldn’t go again, which is a shame because it’s local and a great setting.

‘Chalk’ is tucked away amongst the vines of the Wiston Estate, nestled in the South Downs National Park. The restaurant itself is set in a beautifully renovated and modernised building with additional outside courtyard seating that must be lovely on a day when it’s not cold, grey and hammering down (!) The menu offered a good selection of dishes that felt ‘right’ for the setting and our parties’ pescatarian and gluten-free requirements were easily met from the choices available. Ingredients are sourced as locally as possible, many coming from the estate’s kitchen garden. The freshness this contributed to the flavour came through strongly on all the courses, which were imaginative without being overly ‘fussy’ and nicely cooked (my cod was perfect).’ The wine list offers a good selection of the estate produce alongside both old and new world options. The atmosphere was really relaxed and the whole experience was capped by the excellent service from a team who were friendly, professional and efficient. NB: If you do think of going, see if you can book the wine tour and tasting in before you eat - it’s well worth it.
