A great pub and I have to say this is the best roast dinner I have had. I do think that having to pay an extra £3.50 for gravy is a let down. We had 2 roast dinners and there was a tiny amount of gravy on each plate so then to charge extra isn't very good. This also applies to the pie as well. Unfortunately when you spend £20 + for a roast dinner I would expect gravy to be included without extra cost or at least be a bit generous with it on the dinner.

We were very much looking forward to our Sunday lunch at The White Lion last weekend. We were shown to our table but before we even sat down were told quite abruptly that "you need to vacate by 3pm and we've sold out of chicken parfait". My husband had to ask if we could order a drink and have some water on the table. Twenty minutes later the drinks and water arrived. My husband asked if we could order food. Another five minutes later the only lady that seemed to be able to was take orders came over. My husband commented that the service was a little slow to which she replied "you were late arriving and I don't appreciate being called slow" I pointed out that this was actually incorrect as I had checked my watch on arrival due and it was one minute past one and we had been told we had to leave by 3pm (which we knew when we booked). She responded "well to make you aware I'm actually busy staff training today. What can I get you". We were quite shocked by her response and unfriendliness. The food arrived and it would have been lovely but it was just warm rather than hot The pork roast was not so good as the the crackling hadn't crackled and was soft and the roast potatoes had clearly been cooked quite sometime beforehand and had gone soft so not as enjoyable as we had hoped. I'm afraid the service we had had earlier had dampened our enthusiasm and we both felt uncomfortable and not welcome and wanted to leave as soon as we finished our main courses so did not order a dessert but left. We have lived in the village for nearly 30 years and frequented and supported the pub all that time but after this experience it will take a lot to get us to visit again anytime soon.

Having arrived at 1pm very much looking forward to our Sunday lunch at The White Lion our expectations were quickly dampened when before we had even taken a seat and sat down at the table we were told that we had to vacate our table by 3pm and there was no Chicken Parfait on the menu as it had sold out. We were asked if we wanted water on the table and my husband ordered some drinks. Twenty minutes later the water and the drinks arrived and we had to ask if we could order. Another five minutes later the lady who appeared to be running the restaurant came to take our order. No one else appeared to be able to take any orders My husband commented that the service appeared to be slow to which she replied "You were late and I don't appreciate being called slow" We did agree that we may have arrived 2 mins after 1pm as the car park was full to which she responded "well in case you didn't notice I am staff training today" I was shocked and taken aback by her attitude and this then left a bad and deflated atmosphere for us for the rest of the meal. When our meal did arrive it was warm but not hot and overall the experience had been soured and we did not enjoy it at all. We were also rather disappointed to see that service charge was already added to the bill which we did not feel was justified. We are so very disappointed by the whole experience. We have lived in the village for 30 years and frequented the pub regularly in that time but we are very unlikely to make a return visit anytime soon as we were really made to feel overall very unwelcome. I don't usually write reviews but on this occasion I wanted to raise our concerns.

We came here for Sunday roast and was not disappointed! Me and my partner both had the pork belly roast which was absolutely beautiful, it was cooked to perfection with a perfect crisp crackling. the potatoes and veg to go with was also brilliant, not to mention the cauliflower cheese which was unbelievable. My kids decided against a roast and we were pleasantly surprised with the choice available for them. Both of them enjoyed there meals they had, which I would call pub classics. (Sausage, chips and beans)(Chicken, chips and peas). We loved the feel of the pub itself and the surrounding area. The staff were super friendly and accommodating. We had a meal for two on Friday. Food, Beer, wine and service were all very good. Price was on the high side but OK as we enjoyed the food so much. The big issue though and the reason why we will not be returning is the number of tables ‘crammed’ into the dining area. You’re packed in like sardines. Even the staff were knocking against diners chairs when moving about. We were sitting far too close to other diners which resulted in a stressful atmosphere. It would be much better if two tables were removed from the main dining area. Such a shame but I can’t recommend because of this.

So disappointed! After reading the recent reviews I was really looking forward to Sunday lunch. It was very average, the beef was not very tender and was difficult to cut with a normal knife. The Yorkshire tasted ok but looked awful and the roast potatoes were only just done and the parsnips the same. Two dark green veg served in a side dish not visually enticing as both dark green. A roasted carrot and cauliflower cheese were just ok.we are not at all fussy and eat out often as well as cooking at home. I really cannot recommend The White Lion.

Only popped in for a beer after a walk with our dog. Holidaying in lovely barn up the road. The barman was welcoming but unfortunately the locals I assume created an atmosphere that made us feel unwelcome. I spoke to a dog on entry who was sniffing our dog. He was swiftly removed from our area. Then tried to navigate to garden apologised for having to disturb people seated who begrudgingly let us through. Then entered garden out towards a group of men who fell silent and seemed to huff at our being there. Needless to say left after drink and do not plan to return in our holiday time! Shame. Lovely looking pub.

An experience not to be repeated. We arrived for Sunday lunch looking forward to our Roast after out autumnal walk. Our table had been booked and a deposit paid. The welcome was not warm or friendly, the service extremely slow. It took ages to place an order for drinks and food. When the food eventually arrived it was lukewarm and not cooked that well. We suspect the kitchen ran out of roast potatoes because when they arrived they were pale and not cooked through. Our main courses arrived 90 minutes after we sat at the table. The waitress apologised for the wait and deducted the value of our desserts from the bill. Whilst this gesture was appreciated we are unlikely to return. It is a shame because it used to be a great place to visit for the food and atmosphere. Sadly not the case today.

When The White Lion reopened last year we decided to celebrate my wife's birthday there, with a table reservation at 8pm. Yes we appreciated they were finding their feet as it was their third day, but the evening was a disaster due to the need for all staff (including at the bar) to use a single electronic order entry device. This alone would have been a problem, but the fact no one, not even the owners, knew how to use it properly massively compounded the issue. As a consequence we had to wait more than 20 minutes to even order a drink, a suggestion that they could write our order on a paper pad to get things moving was met with an apology from the waitress, that the owners weren't prepared to do that as they wanted to make the electronic system work. We were eventually served our starters (2 bowls of soup), 70 minutes after we sat down. My wife had ordered the fish special & I opted for the British pub staple, fish & chips for our main courses. Given how long the starters took, we assumed our mains should follow fairly quickly after we'd finished the soup. Oh boy, how wrong was that expectation as our main courses weren't served until 9:50, which was 40 minutes after the starters. By the time we'd finished our main courses every other diner had left the pub, & we decided it was too late to consider a dessert or coffee, so we asked for the bill. Unfortunately our timing was terrible as a group of about 8 young people had arrived for a drink - remember that electronic order pad? Well it was needed to process their drinks order, so our bill had to wait, and the wait went on & on, we called over the waitress to ask why she couldn't give us the bill, & she advised that the owner recognised the appalling experience we'd had & was trying to deduct the cost of the starters from the bill. We hadn't asked for that, but appreciated the gesture, as he couldn't seem to amend the bill we just suggested they deducted the value of the starters from the sum entered into the card machine. But no that wasn't possible the bill generated by the electronic device had to be amended, as we just wanted to go home we said just let us pay for everything, which we did. With a promise that next time we went desserts would be on the house. Fast forward a year. After reading positive reviews we thought we'd give them another chance. When we arrived we were told they were fully booked and as a consequence we'd been allocated a table in their small secondary dining area. There was already a family of 3 eating, & a large table set for 9. We decided to forego starters & enjoyed a conversation whilst waiting for our main courses. Just after we'd finished our main courses & ordered desserts the large party arrived, sadly this group was extraordinarily noisy, with one female member of the group having a voice louder than a ship's foghorn. Our desserts were served & the waitress then proceeded to take the drinks order for the large group. Passing our table she asked if the desserts were OK, we said yes, but pointed out that it was now impossible for us the have a conversation & asked if she could possibly have a word with the group & ask if they could turn the volume down. She didn't do so but came back to say if we wanted to pick up our desserts there was now space in the main dining area & we could move. We told her that wasn't an appealing solution so we'd finish our desserts & have our bill as soon as possible. I told her I wasn't prepared to pay the 10% discretionary charge as the solution to our dinner being spoiled was appalling & wanted to speak to the owner. He was totally disinterested & blamed us for not requesting a quiet table when we had reserved. As others have posted he's only interested in the profit & was clearly more interested in the money he was going to make from a large group. Well there are lots of other good pubs in the area & that's where we'll be going in the future.

We booked the White Lion Sunday lunch 13.30. We arrived just before 13.00 ordered a drink & advised the bar we had arrived, they even showed us where we would be seated. Roasts offered, we are meat eaters: Rare Beef, Pork Belly or Half a Roast Chicken. Unfortunately, the person I was with doesn't like Pork & not keen on rare beef, so was opting for the Chicken. We went outside with our drinks & returned for 13.30, sat at our table, which was by the door, so when the waitress came over we did ask if there was another table, only to be told they were fully booked, so we said fine appreciate that. We were then given the menus, ordered another drink, which was brought to the table - Other diners dinners looked really lovely, so we were really looking forward to our lunch. I was going for the Beef & my friend the Chicken, when the Waitress came back to take the order, 13.40, we were then told there was no chicken left, my friend explained that was all they wanted as he didn't like the other Roast Meat options, so she offered up the cod & chips, this is not a Roast. We then said we would pay for the drinks & go elsewhere. If you are fully booked, why would you not make sure you have enough food for the covers? If it had been later, 14.30 for instance, then maybe acceptable, but 13.40 seems rather early. I can understand keeping costs down by not wasting food, but surely the Chef could have rustled something up for the next day if there were too many Chickens left over. A shame, the food looked lovely, but we won't be returning.

Definitely not a great place if you can't eat meat and/or dairy. They clearly do not care about this fact. You can feel the eye roll a mile away and the snappy attitude that you receive when you have to ask a few questions because they don't make it clear. They actually do not have a veggie option (they only have one that can be created veggie - a mushroom risotto. How creative... and im not convinced it isn't made with chicken stock which obviously defeats the object). Very disappointing. I was so hopeful. If you eat meat I'm sure you'll have a great time and be accommodated. If you don't... you. Will. Feel. The. Chill. !!!

The food that arrived was good, but unfortunately one meal did not arrive! Apparently they were able to charge for the meal but not ‘send it to the kitchen’. We are still waiting for the refund! The poached eggs and beans on toast at home...

I ordered the wagu beef burger and skinny fries for around £16 I believe the other meal in our party that was ordered was the chicken supreme which sounded amazing and was priced at £19.50, so we were expecting something really spectacular when the meal...

I went with a group of 14 for lunch. We had prebooked. Beforehand and on the day everything went like clockwork. The room had been arranged as I had requested, the waiting and bar staff were very friendly and efficient. The food was absolutely excellent....

Anniversary dinner, disapointing menu, limited selection & no specials. The food we ordered was nice enough but nothing special. Overall a bit boring and overpriced, especially the wine, we will not be going back.

Genuinely one of the very best pubs in sussex. Absolutely worth a visit, weekly if possible! We are very lucky to have this place, its beer especially, its food, its open fireplaces, its atmosphere, outstanding staff and wonderful owners. Looking forward to my next pint and meal at the White Lion. We are greatful you are here.

Glad to see the White Lion succeeding but pricing maybe needs a bit of care - while pub overheads are clearly up, £25 (and £27.50 inc 10% service charge if part of a meal?) seems eye-wateringly high as a threshold for a bottle of wine,...

My wife & I decided to visit The White Lion Inn in Thakeham over the Easter weekend instead of our usual Pub | Restaurant in Findon. We loved the whole experience and now have a new destination. The whole team have established a wonderful Sussex venue with a warm welcome from lovely people who obviously care deeply about what they do. Outstanding food from a well thought through Menu was thoroughly enjoyed by both of us only next time we'll leave some room for a desert. Without doubt this quality establishment is a clear winner and I would encourage anyone to make a booking as you will be pleased you did. Thanks to the team for fitting us in especially as our booking was a little bit last minute. Bravo & good luck to the owners who have created something quite special. Duncan & Lindsay Armstrong

This is a very unBritish British pub. On the Friday and Sunday we were there the staff (as far as I could see all natives) gave every impression of enjoying their jobs, liking each other and the customers. It was almost disconcerting. For a moment...

Great lunch and dinner spot Lovely to have a local pub, that has got the top 3 things right... Friendly welcome, a resident chef who cooks really well and good service. Food is very good but pub prices generally are creeping up, despite this you...

This is no longer a proper pub. (BTW it is in Thakeham, not Pulborough). The objective seems to be to ratchet up average customer spend by charging absurd prices - quite likely at the cost of not encouraging return visits. The underlying tone of the...

Great atmosphere, well thought out dishes which are very upmarket for a local pub and a brilliant selection of wine. All well priced and combined with brilliant service. Cannot wait to come again!

Overpriced food. Pathetic portions. A huge amount of money for tiny portions of food. We went for lunch and came away hungry! Wouldn’t go back. Massage with Jane was lovely though. Lovely lady. We were here in October. This was a gift so I’m glad I didn’t pay!

Visited on a busy Saturday evening. Friendly staff. The two starters we had were excellent and plenty on the menu to choose from. Mains were homemade and really tasty. Will be returning… highly recommend!

Every time I order the quality is always consistent. Particularly recommend the cookie doughs. Why go to a sloppy chain when you can support a fantastic independent!

Free entry to explore the marvellous gardens at Leonardslee when booking the Ultimate experience. A thorough wine tasting, brilliantly conducted by 'Simba', a true credit to his profession as a sommelier. Fabulous wines and that Sabre moment when the cork is 'popped', my friend did this with such distinction. An excellent, delicious Afternoon Tea followed, nothing waste much of a problem, photo opportunity, carrot cake a welcome extra but 'Simba' created the icing on the cake. Fantastic experience.

I cannot begin to tell you how poor our turkey christmas meal was today. The meal was luke warm. Turkey had no flavour; roast potatoes had been previously cooked and not reheated properly; vegetables were nothing to shout home about and service was very laid back to say the least. What was meant to be a most enjoyable family meal quite honestly was a huge disappointment. I would not return to this site again even if someone paid me.
