We dined here for our second visit and were delighted with everything yet again. Having previously tried the Sunday roast, which was extremely generous in portion size and although the restaurant was full, the service was quick and efficient. This time we chose a weekday lunchtime. Again the restaurant was full but the staff were polite and service was quick again. The food is really excellent and we will definitely be coming back in the near future. We booked on their own website without any problems.

Excellent food and service. Thankfully - because of an issue with the availability of parking. This could perhaps be addressed more sympathetically. We were booked in for lunch but, on arrival, had to park elsewhere to enjoy our pre-meal bike ride round the lovely local lanes and nearby Downs Link track. We actively support local hospitality venues and this is the first time we've encountered this attitude. Hmm...

Set in the sleepy Shipley, it's nicely out of the way and very peaceful. The building is old and quaint and has a friendly feeling to it, although we sat inside the garden looked like a great place to spend a warm summer day. It wasn't too busy and had ample seating for a Sunday lunchtime. When we arrived we were greeted warmly and shown to our seats, my dad who's elderly was offered an extra cushion to make it more comfortable for him. We had two Sunday roasts, beef and chicken. The beef wasn't great, I did enjoy it, but it wasn't the best I've had. The rest of the roast was very good, crispy roast potatoes with a fluffy centre and big tasty Yorkshire pudding and the sharing veg was well done with plenty for two. My dad had the chicken and said it was melt in the mouth delicious hence the 4 stars. I also had a blueberry cheesecake for pudding which was amazing and my dad had the Eton mess, which looked equally good. Service was prompt and attentive and I felt looked after. All in all a thoroughly nice Sunday lunch out, would certainly recommend.

The best pub in West Sussex! If you're a foodie you will not be disappointed. Yummy food, with a changing daily menu, extensive daily specials board - with lots of local fish dishes - dressed crab, scallops etc. Lots of meat and veggies options. A village shop with local produce inside the pub - lots of local vegetables, fruit, eggs, bread, the best sausage rolls, meat, fish, homemade pies, butchers sausages, bacon, flour, you name it! A gem of a local pub, with a beautiful garden and restaurant. A traditional pub that continually moves with the times, that has kept the best bits of a traditional country pub. Enjoy! And thank you for always delivering delicious food, a welcoming environment and outstanding service.

What a find! returned after many years, still the same, a lovely Olde Worlde pub in a beautiful setting, we sat in the garden, our meals were delish, such a tempting menu too, the service was impeccable, at first there were several kids causing riot and screaming round the garden, after several of us telling them to stop to no avail, the parents having no control, the landlord told them to go, once they had left it was lovely, the quality, setting and service was second to none, there is fresh local produce for sale too inside, these type of pubs are far and few between, a little gem in the country! will be returning most definitely!

Obviously well managed as staff trained well and landlord ejected an obnoxious party with children running riot screeching. Every table in the garden either asked the kids (+-3 - 6yrs) to stop screaming or were Shhhh'ing them. I'm sorry the landlord got abuse when asking them to leave (hardly surprising when you look at the children's behaviour) but thank you...a lot of tables like us stayed and enjoyed the country setting in the sun. It's a shop inside as well as a pub, but on the hottest day of the year so far (28 deg) we got a shaded bench in the garden and enjoyed our meal. Generous portions, the pie was enormous and had a lot of gravy and we both struggled to finish. The chips were big and hot, and all served on proper plates. As a family of 11 adults, we met up for a meal in memory of my late brother at the Countryman in Shipley, 100 yards or so away from where he used to live. We hadn’t booked which was a distinct oversight but were happy to eat and drink outdoors despite a cool, breezy Sunday lunchtime. It wasn’t just the breeze that blew cold. So did the overtly unwelcoming reception from the management and staff. We were very happy to order simple food but ended up cancelling due to realising we were definitely not welcome. We moved on to the nearby Knepp Estate where we were welcomed and even given a private dining room for our group.

If your looking for an amazing pub with great food then here it is. We booked for a Saturday evening and as the weather was so nice we sat in the garden. The first suprise was a farm shop waiting inside. Lots of fresh veg, fruit, local meat and honey plus the usual cakes ,sweets and drinks. The staff were very friendly and not rushed. There was also daily specials on a blackboard inside. We ordered slow cooked pork belly, asparagus and peas pasta and a side of chips. The food was served quickly but not too quickly and tasted amazing. The portions were really good and everything tasted so fresh. For dessert we shared an Eton mess. We had a j20 and a pint of lager and the bill came to £54. I felt it was definitely worth the price. The garden is well laid out and has plenty of space. Its very dog friendly. Inside the restaurant is separate from the bar. If your passing and not quite sure where to eat or have a drink then give it a go. Its like a hidden treasure.

I meet here on a fairly regular basis with two friends, and have never had a disappointing meal. Fresh fish is the speciality, and both the choice and the standard of cooking are splendid. The daily blackboard regularly shows six to eight different fish or seafood dishes, in addition to the daily standard battered fish and chips and a prawn cocktail starter. Today we all had two starters: deliciously crisp salt and pepper squid followed by luxuriantly large but finely flavoured Cornish moules mariniere. As always the service was friendly and accommodating, and we felt welcome and well looked after. In addition to the pub/ restaurant business there is a real mini market of local produce, both fresh and artisanal. I can recommend The Countryman unreservedly.

The Countryman Inn in Shipley, West Sussex, is a noteworthy establishment that successfully combines traditional elements with modern conveniences. During our visit, the staff were welcoming and provided excellent customer service, which made for a pleasant experience. The entrance, interestingly, functions as a local store - an innovative idea likely stemming from the Covid-19 lockdowns. This feature, along with ample parking, adds to the practicality of the establishment. The interior decor is traditional, evoking a sense of nostalgia reminiscent of the 1980s, yet it feels respectful and appropriate for the setting. Culinary-wise, the offerings were impressive. My wife’s pork belly was well-presented and generous in portion, while my choice of fish and chips was satisfying, with the large portion of cod and what seemed like double-fried chips. These dishes appeared to be popular among locals as well. Accompanying our meal, I had a long blond beer and my wife a glass of wine, both of which were fitting choices. Overall, our experience at The Countryman Inn was very positive, highlighted by good food, a pleasant atmosphere, and excellent service. It’s a place we would gladly revisit.

Well-regarded oasis a mile or so into rurality just off the A272 near Billingshurst. Plenty of parking, and on a warm evening the nearest entrance is via the open restaurant doors. Contemporary refurbishment has been resisted so there's a bit of a comfy 70's feel inside with the slight novelty of a small farm shop between the restaurant and a tiny bar. Maybe there's a more public bar somewhere else; if so, I didn't spot it. Anyway, I suspect that the main focus is on food, and there were already a few punters at the trough when we arrived early on a Thursday evening. Once we were settled in, we weren't expecting a particularly noteworthy evening. The menu had the usual pub fare, and the two ladies serving seemed rather diffident. However, as we considered our options our (actually very pleasant) server helpfully directed us to the hitherto unnoticed specials board. Upon perusal, I started to get a warm fuzzy feeling of expectation. I wasn't exactly sure what a canon of lamb involved, but it was a special and I wanted it. Excellent choice too. It turned up looking not too dissimilar to a sliced duck breast and was all meat and subtly flavoursome. Supported by mashed potato with small pieces of discernible black pudding and a tasty flavoursome redcurrant jus, so the whole package was a really splendid dish, and a very welcome surprise. Mrs EPR stuck to the menu and clearly enjoyed her chicken and BBQ ribs combo. Nothing on the dessert menu really took our fancy, but we did agree with our nice server that two slices of coffee and walnut cake from the farm shop would be a good alternative option. I admired the creative solution and the cake was just fine. I also liked the compact and sensible wine list which offered a range of affordable options Certainly, our french merlot provided enjoyable lubrication during the course of our meal. So, a good result all round - we look forward to our next visit.

I used to go here regularly with my late husband. The food was always good and the staff kind and helpful. Travelling in that direction last week with a friend, we stopped for a drink. The pub doesn't look so very different and may not have had a fancy refurb inside but it was still the same in essentials. Friendly helpful staff, one of whom remembered me despite the passing of a decade and though we had missed lunch service, the wonderful smell of the food coming from another table made us feel like Bisto Kids. I will make sure I'm there in time for lunch next time I'm in the area.

I haven’t visited the Countryman for years but I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised and delighted by the quality of the food. Look beyond the main menu and the fish menu is excellent with clearly fresh ingredients expertly cooked. On a summer’s evening this is a very pleasant place to spend an evening. The Farm Shop within the pub is an added quirk. The staff were courteous and friendly one of whom had been in the family for years. Beer was well kept.

We visited while walking through Knepp. It is a pub and village shop. The outdoor area was lovely. Great pub.

Good, mostly traditional food, with excellent service. Can get busy so best to book. No dogs allowed inside but nice garden if weather allows. Big car park. Curious that pub includes a grocery shop.

The terrace seats have a tent like a Mongolian ger and the atmosphere is great. The service from the staff is excellent, and you won't find a better pub in this area.

Free entry to explore the marvellous gardens at Leonardslee when booking the Ultimate experience. A thorough wine tasting, brilliantly conducted by 'Simba', a true credit to his profession as a sommelier. Fabulous wines and that Sabre moment when the cork is 'popped', my friend did this with such distinction. An excellent, delicious Afternoon Tea followed, nothing waste much of a problem, photo opportunity, carrot cake a welcome extra but 'Simba' created the icing on the cake. Fantastic experience.

Every time I order the quality is always consistent. Particularly recommend the cookie doughs. Why go to a sloppy chain when you can support a fantastic independent!

I cannot begin to tell you how poor our turkey christmas meal was today. The meal was luke warm. Turkey had no flavour; roast potatoes had been previously cooked and not reheated properly; vegetables were nothing to shout home about and service was very laid back to say the least. What was meant to be a most enjoyable family meal quite honestly was a huge disappointment. I would not return to this site again even if someone paid me.

Driven passed this pub at least 30 times on way to Gatwick over the years but never stopped. Visited on Thursday 26th September at 1:30pm. Reasonable sized car park with lots of spaces. Pub has oak beams which gives it a real traditional vibe. Didn’t book a table but was able to be seated straight away. Good choice on the menu. We had ciabatta baguettes (one halumi one sausage/onion) washed down with a Prosecco and a beer. Service good and baguettes only £9 each. View out the back of the pub over the South Downs is stunning! Worth knowing that last food orders are 2pm for lunch. Would definitely return.
