Magical find. Great food,friendly staff and even cater for gluten free which isn't always easy to find. They have fantastic views, when we where there the sunset was amazing. Well worth a visit if your in the area.

A great overnight stay for walkers off the South Downs Way. A community pub with an incredible view of Amberley’s own savannah! Friendly, thoughtful service, comfortable rooms with good showers &, though just a continental breakfast, an invitation to take some with you for your walk.

Fantastic friendly pub, we couldn’t stay as the rooms weren’t ready when we booked our walk on the South Downs but we visited for the first England euro 24 match. Great place really friendly locals . The beer garden with views of the marches with muntjac deer grazing in the evening is one of the best you will find in England Good selection of local beers and friendly customers and staff

What a wonderful time we had the the Sportsman Inn while cycling the SDW. A very warm welcome, delicious meals, lovely people & stunning view. The rooms had everything we needed and the secure bike parking was awesome. Cannot recommend The Sportsman Inn more highly!

What a gem! Stopped here for a night whilst walking the South Downs Way, and received a very warm friendly welcome. The room was simply furnished, comfortable, very clean, with thoughtful extras provided. The menu for the evening meal was small but perfect for the end of a long day, and the food was the best we'd had in the week so far. The atmosphere was warm and we loved the unexpected open mic live music. Altogether a great find and would thoroughly recommend for a stop-over. Well done guys!

A little off the main road but we’ll worth the effort to find down the lanes. Unplanned Sunday lunch stop off driving home from a weekend away in Chichester. Stunning views match the excellent food and customer service.

Lovely staff. We went for two nights B and B. Sadly the room was more like a single room. No chair very small room for two people. Very clean room. Shower the best thing about the room. We tried to change rooms but all booked and all similar in size. English Breakfast delicious - Continental limited but lovely yoghurts.

Set back from B2139 on Rackham road this pub delivers a friendly welcome and good lunchtime menu with plenty of choice to suite most people. The service is prompt and food well presented. Recommended to give it a try booking preferred to avoid disappointment.

I visited the Sportsman again this year and all I can say is what I’ve said before - amazingly tasty food, well prepared and served, friendly staff who make you feel welcome and valued. The rooms are comfortable and clean, and with good views. The weather wasn’t good enough to let us sit outside and watch the sun going down, but when the opportunity arises it is amazing. Well worth the trip as this little Gem of a pub will not disappoint

Very seasonal fresh menu. The portions are really generous and everything we had was seasoned and cooked beautifully. The staff were welcoming and attentive. It's set in a lovely country setting with amazing views. Make use of the complimentary binoculars to watch the wild deer.

We visited this lovely pub for the first time today. Great location near Amberley. The most splendid views from the restaurant to the rear, very good food and Hophead Dark Star beer on tap, it was like heaven! Lovely helpful staff too, this pub will go on my favourite list.

This pub is outstanding because of its views across Pulborough Brooks and deservedly so. On a summer’s evening this is the perfect place to chat with friends and watch the sun go down. The food is in the main of good quality. I can particularly recommend their home cooked pie of the day and some lovely puddings. Their burgers are not the best but perfectly acceptable. Prices are reasonable. The staff are friendly and helpful and the beer is well kept. Parking is limited but there is plenty of room in the country lane. This pub is a definite one for the list in the summer.

Good food but very noisy. The conservatory at the rear of the bar is extremely noisy. When we visited one table was shouting across to friends at a nearby table with no regard to other patrons or the COVID controls. Food was very good.

We went with friends on a busy Saturday night. It was extremely noisy and regretably our table was right beside the kitchen door. As a consequence it was very difficult to chat unless you are an experienced lip reader! The service was very slow, probably as it was so busy, but we waited almost an hour before being fed. That said, once it arrived the food was fine, not exceptional but fine. The best dish seemed to be the fish and chips. Reasonably priced I would give it another try but probably only on a less busy evening!

Came to have a birthday lunch with my sister. Very clean and good covid system. Went in for a Sportsman burger. A joy, as it was served on ciabatta..not a blinking brioche! Service was delightful. Just nothing to fault. Even saw the herd of deer..stunning.

We took this in as part of a walk from Arundel to Amberley and it was well worth the extra distance to walk out of the village. An unassuming pub from the the front, that hides stunning views over the Arun valley. Excellent local beer and the food wow! We had to wait about 30 minutes for freshly cooked steak pies, but it was well worth the wait. A true shortcrust pie stuffed with tender steak in a lovely rich sauce with baby onions. This was served with perfect mash and great selection of vegetables. Friendly service. Just what you want from a pub.

It has literally been years since I have been so impressed with food in a pub. I stayed here last week with 2 cycling friends doing The South Downs Way, and the quality of the steak meal we (all) had was incredible. Homemade sticky toffee pudding to die for and fantastic local cheeses. The ingredients are all very high quality, locally sourced and beautifully home cooked. The peppercorn sauce was out of the this world! Even the fry up had top quality smoked bacon, sausages & artisan bread/toast. This is a pub that makes a BIG effort. I loved this place so much I drove 22 miles to take my family there yesterday for Sunday Roast, and we all enjoyed a truly 10/10 meal again. Sophie and her team are very charming, incredibly hospitable & lovely humour too. It is WELL worth the additional short drive outside of Amberley village to enjoy this gem - we will be back again!!

Unfortunately, they didn't serve food on Sunday evening but the staff were amazingly kind to drive us to another pub to pick up a take away. Sitting on their decking terrace to eat was wonderful as the views are amazing (same in the bedrooms). The Sportsman was an overnight stop for 4 of us on a 2 day South Downs mtb ride. And it turned out to be an absolute gem, the kind of English pub you dream of having near your home! The staff were really welcoming and accommodating, the rooms were spotlessly clean and comfortable with a nice powerful shower, the dinner was excellent - food really is first class - and the breakfast was absolutely stand out. Add into this a garage to lock up your bikes and some excellently kept local ales and it's a winning formula - can't wait to return!

We've been here many times over the past 8 years and it has had ups and downs, but it's on an 'up' for sure at the moment. Had lunch here yesterday with some friends after a walk around the beautiful village of amberley. The food was excellent, with an excellent choice from both the a la carte menu and the specials board offering something for everyone. We all thoroughly enjoyed our lunch, it was delicious! The draft beer is local and the have an excellent range on tap. Service was really friendly and helpful, the staff were very willing to accommodate requests for slight changes to the dishes to account for various diet requirements!!

Stayed here with friends while walking the South Downs Way. It’s a lovely B&B.; We got a very warm welcome and the staff were lovely. For dinner we either had fish pie or the house burger. Both were excellent. All together it was a great place to stay. We had 2 rooms facing the back of the B&B; from where the views are terrific.

We stated here for one night booked through Macs Adventures while walking the South Downs Way.

We booked for Saturday dinner, hoping for some proper English food, as advertised. The food was pretty bad, and each course took an hour to turn up. It also wasn’t cheap. Even trying to fill the time with drinking didn’t work, as drinks orders took a similar amount of time to arrive.

Gosh I wish we had pubs like this back home (Isle of Man). Quintessentially gorgeous English country tavern with views to die for. It was a family reunion dinner, and we were able to sit in the conservatory and admire the landscape. Table settings, service, food, prices - everything was excellent. The only thing stopping me for giving 5 stars was our request for a bottle of house wine. The young lady waiting on our table replied, "We don't actually have a house wine. But if it's the cheapest you're looking for …" Er, not quite the thing to say to paying guests!

I stayed at the Sportsman Inn when walking the South Downs Way. It's a bit of a walk off the trail, on the edge of Amberley, but not too far. My room was spacious and comfortable.

Had seen pub when driving past and looked at website and saw the views and food looked good so decided to take a punt when friends cam over from Australia. Eat in conservatory and food was excellent as was view. Very relaxed atmosphere and helpful staff. Will visit again

The Sportsman has had its ups and down in recent years but just now it seems to have got its act together. There is a great choice of beers, and the food is good modern pub food, reasonably priced and very tasty.

Lunch for four bank holiday Monday - the food was superb and the staff were welcoming, attentive and friendly. The hake was beautifully cooked and presented and the halloumi bugers with sweet potato fries was delicious.

Called in for a lunchtime drink with my husband after a game of golf. A small party had finished and the staff were dealing with the bill and/or clearing away. We waited at the bar for 8 mins , not one member of staff even acknowledged us let alone served us. We won’t visit again.

Lovely views & nice Pub in general, but was disappointed with my meal. The chips were undercooked & the potatoes used had a strange taste, which I attempted to cover up with Mayo, and the Ham seemed to me as if it came from a tin.

Have been here several times recently and it continues to perform at a high standard. Friendly and helpful waiting staff, good value tasty food at reasonable prices. On a warm summer night it is the perfect place to sit on the decking and gaze out at the wonderful view over the plain beyond whilst indulging in a foaming pint or glass of wine and enjoy a meal from the great menu. Give it a try!

We were a group of hungry cyclists halfway through the South Downs Way ride. We hadn't booked for dinner but despite being full, they kindly squeezed us in (what a relief). We enjoyed a tasty meal and comfortable, good value accommodation. They kindly let us store bikes safely under lock and key in the barn and also offered use of a compressor in the morning when one of our party woke up to a flat tyre. Lovely, friendly family run business with beautiful views of what I can only describe as a 'Serengeti' flood plain (with deer instead of giraffes, but you get the idea).
