Lovely, friendly, good old fashioned pub. Great atmosphere and impeccable service. Food was good but not a very varied menu, great if you like fish. Would be nice to see some pies, chicken breast with steamed veg etc on the menu and some good ole fashion pub grub.

Wow! Where do I start. The aesthetic of the pub is truly beautiful. The old building really is fascinating. The service was impressive and the staff were very kind and accommodating to my needs. For my lunch I chose to have the burger and it was incredible. The coleslaw was great as well as chips on the side which were cooked to perfection. Money well spent!

This is one truly hidden gem! Been living here a year and this is round the corner don’t know why I’ve never been before, we booked it on a whim, a traditional English country pub. The food was amazing, the cost reasonable and the service was lovely. I few things to point out- this pub doesn’t have a car park, so walk there if you can as it’s on a narrow lane. There are steps and low beams so again just be prepared. I had the house burger ! And it was a feast, a large double burger with cheese and bacon! I wasn’t expecting two burgers on the bun I didn’t remember seeing that on the menu, but it was delicious, with crispy fries and coleslaw. My partner had the steak again a good size, cooked just how he wanted, and served with chunky chips and sides . There is even a pub dog that has a little tag, because his sad face just says feed me 😊 I also saw the fish and chips being eaten by someone else and that looked good to, it next on my list when I go back.

We walked here from home and sat down in the front bar, drinks ordered. I took my daughter to the toilet to come back and find that my partner had been asked to move us as our table had been 'reserved'. Seems to me that whoever it was that was 'watching' decided to make their move while we were in the toilet. Note that there were no reserved signs and we had been allowed to sit down with a purchased drink. The table we were led to (by a non caring young member of staff who was doing as he was duly told) was a stuffy out out of the way room between the kitchen, the back of the bar and the service area. This room was surrounded by no one else and contained an old jukebox/games machine/some old books and a box of what looked like empty bottles. This was while there were free tables in the front bar and the dining area. Clearly we were not wanted so we took our drinks out into the garden where there were signs (that complimented one seen in the bar) that said all children must be seated. Together with this an elderly lady came and sat at the top of the garden and watched us. I don't think this was connected but it did further encourage us to leave. So, having read over past reviews and seen how children are not accepted into this pub I would advise you go to The White Horse where the landlord doesn't have a chip (about children) on his shoulder that he wants to share with everyone else....like the rising sun. A look at your website ( btw who looks at a pub website before visiting so don't even go there because if you do it makes you look petty) states that children are not welcome in the front bar at any time. So why let us sit down then only to move us. Oh yes, because either your young staff aren't paid enough to make this decision or you are happy to take our money but not accommodate us. By the way, your website said that your 'kids room' (already creepy) says you provide pens, paper and books. I have not yet met any kids that read the good beer guide as none of the books I saw in 'the kids room' were children's books. Also, and this may seem like a cheap shot but it is true....your London Pride and Tribute were like vinegar. So, Nutbourne, Papa Lazarou and Uncle Harvey you can keep your Royston Vasey 'pub'. I would not be surprised if you have a taxi service called Bab's Cabs.

Went for a meal with friends, booked in advance. Upon arrival we were told that the menu was limited because the deliveries hadn’t arrived. There was a very small selection of food and the menu was misleading. It’s a pity because I was looking forward to supporting a country pub. I don’t think I’ll go back.

Overall, the food and service were good. Pleasant staff and atmosphere! However, big points deducted for deliberately attempting to overcharge. If you would like customers to pay your 'optional' 10% service charge, then ask if they would like to do this. Don't just add it on to the bill and hope the customer does not notice. This is the UK, not America.

Visiting friends we popped in for a sarnie and a drink. Not too bad at all. Sausage and french mustard roll (not a sarnie) was a little heavy on the mustard. Only comment is that we each had a sarnie/roll and a drink and it was just under £15 per person. Nice quaint pub in tiny village where they obviously know all the locals. Not meant of these left.

Very friendly pub (both staff and locals). The girls serving us food and behind the bar were really helpful ; nothing was too much trouble. For example, when I couldn't decide which beer to have they poured me a taster glass. There's lots of outdoor space with big tables for groups. There were eight of us and the food came out all together and to everyone's taste. It was good pub food, though the menu could do with a pie on it! I would certainly recommend The Rising Sun for good pub food and drink.

Fantastic Sunday roast with all the trimmings. Good variety on the menu with specials included. Good options for children. Sadly the first beer we tried was off. Took it back to the bar and offered an apology but pints simply replaced with an equally out of date/ contaminated guest ale without being given a choice. Clearly they are fobbing off customers with dodgy beer that should be tipped down the drain, instead they’re selling it in the hope of no complaints. It’s a shame as otherwise would have been a five star review.

The existing reviews and pictures do not do this lovely village pub justice! We stayed nearby and came for dinner on a Friday night with our dog. The service was superb and the food was so yummy and well priced. We had the lamb, fish & chips, and plaice with mash and greens, followed by ice cream and a crumble to share. Our dog was so welcomed and the resident dog, Chalky, is a real cutie. They stayed open very late for a village pub too - way past midnight! The building is beautiful. The owner and chef were chatty and friendly. My only regret is that we didn't get the chance to go back later this weekend for a roast!

Chose to be in the garden as interior dark and gloomy. Garden unkempt and run down with broken and rotting woodwork on tables and benches. Lunch for four of us on a Saturday. This pub is in Nutbourne, a little village just outside Pulborough. Parking is a bit of a challenge but the pub isn’t huge so that will limit the number of guests (and cars outside) Inside, it’s a lovely old fashioned proper country pub, with low beams to knock yourself unconscious on, a bar room and a restaurant room. They had a good draft cider, did a good G&T and range of beers (which I didn’t explore because I don’t drink it!) For such a small place, it has a very good range of choices on the menu: usual pub fare and about half a dozen specials. Mrs K and our friend had a moussaka, her dad had a “light bite” ham-egg-chips, myself fish and chips. Simple food but very well cooked: chips especially good. The only gripe was that the moussaka (clearly home made, not warmed in a microwave, and delicious) could/should have been hotter. Staff were young, but did a good job. We will go back. It’s nice.

Garden is pretty if a little rustic, but for me that adds to the charm. Good menu and wonderful attentive staff and lovely landlord as well. Only slight issue is the parking is a bit hard as you have to go on the road but you can usually find some. Best bet is to get there early and make sure you book as it does get quite busy! I’ve been going to the Rising Sun since as long as I can remember, and it is one of the nicest pubs that you could find…if you can find it! Under the owner, Regan Howard’s stewardship, a new duo of Chef and Front of house staff have transformed the menu. Being a free house, there is a massive range of beverages available at very fair prices and the food menu (which is constantly updated) includes specials and mouthwatering choice of Sunday roasts that would give any other carvery a run for their money! They also have regular quiz nights and live music throughout the year, oh and a lovely garden! See you there!

Went on Sunday 16 April 2023. Service: Shown to our table at 2:45pm (allotted time slot), whilst waiting for a drinks order / table order, another couple came in at 3pm and got offered drink service. So, I thought this was a little odd, eventually the waitress came over and asked what we wanted to eat! I explained I thought you might have offered us a drink first? Seemed a bit quizzical and then got the drinks menu, those were eventually ordered and our drinks came at about 310pm. Food order also taken. It wasn't until 3:45pm that we eventually got our food. I.e. an hour after first being seated! We spoke to the table next to us whose orders were wrong, and we commented on the poor waitress service as things just didn't seem to run as they should. Moving on, the food was excellent and we could not fault that in anyway, however the optional service charge was not given for the reasons stated above. The restaurant was not really busy and the young staff seemed happy to meander. So if a very relaxed and long dinner is your thing, then this is probably the place for you. I would eat there again, but clearly the service must be taken into account.

We booked a table at The Rising Sun, Nutbourne, Pulborough for a Christmas Eve meal, with my wife and her mother. We had heard they had a new chef and team and were delighted how good the evening was. Having had really bad very recent experiences at the revamped White Lion, Thakeham, and The Roundabout Hotel, West Chiltington, it was a total pleasure to go somewhere where the food was excellent, service spot on, and atmosphere buzzing and busy! I had the best burger I’ve had for years, my wife loved her risotto, and my mother in law ( who doesn’t get out much!) said the fish and chips were as good as any she’s ever had, and she’s 83! It’s a relief to find there are still real traditional English pubs, and The Riser is definitely one of them, and we will definitely return!!!

The sun is setting, not rising, on this sorry establishment. It should be so much better. The building is attractive and the garden spacious and filled with birdsong from the trees that surround it. However, the only food on offer is sandwiches because the pub currently has no chef. This does not explain the indifferent service from the bar staff. Nor does it account for why it took more than half an hour for one of the sandwiches my partner and I ordered to arrive. Clearly the kitchen had forgotten the order. The other sandwich never appeared because the kitchen had apparently run out of ingredients, which we should have been told immediately. It was a fine summer day when we visited. The pub could be a really charming place but it is very poorly managed.

Had an amazing lunch here, sat in the garden with sunshine, great beer and delicious food! Highly recommend to anyone wanting an unpretentious country setting

April 2022: Came here for a meal after finding our original choice nearby no longer served the advertised menu. We were not disappointed!! The choice was excellent, and the food and service first class. Very happy to recommend this as a lovely place to eat.

Food was excellent and a real good older fashioned country pub. Quick service polite staff. Lack of parking but who cares!

Always very friendly local country boozer. Better than average menu, cooked from scratch on site, not delivered by Brake Brothers.

Nice staff and atmosphere. The food was good but I had a few mussel shells not opened - did not get ill though! I would happily go again.

Disappointing. Cold food and one plate late. Crab sticks are not crab! Service not bad but the food needs improvement. Reheating is a safety issue

The place is beautiful .staff in the restaurant were friendly and so attentive . The bar is cosy and comfortable for a pre meal drink . The food in the Restaurant for Sunday lunch was delicious decor is gorgeous. The grounds and the outdoor seating area are lovely to sit in if weather permits. Definitely returning.

Planned a Saturday lunch walk with this pub in the middle. Was very excited to go from the good reviews for food but kitchen closed. Two others in the very tired pub with unfriendly staff who as we were sat in the empty forecourt asked us if we were going to use the pub very much to try and move us on. Go to The Fox much friendlier and wonderful menu.

We chose this restaurant as it was recommended by a friend. Booked a table to have a Sunday Roast. Meal was good reasonably priced till we got the and we were charged for a bottle of red wine when actually it was only a large glass which they rectified. But it wasn’t til I gat home and checked the bill again and they had also charged us for other drinks that we did not have. It was only £8.70 on top of what we actually had so not so bad but still not good. So just a warning double check your bill. Will not be returning to this establishment.
