Birthday celebration for my mums 80th, we booked this visit back in beginning of October after making a call to the venue and being told that our table of 19 would easily be accommodated. What a disappointment on arrival instead of being sat together we were given two tables each side off double doors leading to the bar. To say my mum was disappointed was an understatement. No amount of pleading with the manager to sort it out would work snd the manageress quite honestly didn’t give a toss. The bar was understaffed and getting drinks was a long wait , the food was appalling with five mains sent back because they were so cold and the supposed trio of desserts was some terrible little plastic tubs of unknown substance and cheap cake it looked like they had raided the sales section at Tesco served on a tacky tray in the middle of the table. Overall very underwhelming and a disappointing night . I would say avoid and look elsewhere.

We travelled from the Midlands on Sunday 13 April and arriving early evening, found nowhere to have a hot meal. It was suggested by a pub in Hatfield Broad Oak to try the Axe and Compasses. An excellent choice! We managed to get in and order half an hour before the end and received a very generous meal, succulent beef, lovely roast veg and greens, a hot drink and a beer, then desserts. Very filling and tasty meal, thanks to the staff for accomodating us so late in the day, it made a fantastic difference.

Hands down the best pub experience I’ve ever had. The new chef at The Plough has absolutely transformed the menu every dish is bursting with flavour, beautifully presented, and cooked to perfection. From the steak to the specials, everything we tried was next-level this is not your average pub grub. It’s elevated, creative, and utterly delicious. The service was warm, welcoming, and attentive – you can really feel the passion and care from the whole team. The atmosphere? Unreal. There’s a genuine vibe here, something you don’t come across often it’s lively, cozy, and full of character. You can tell people want to be here. It honestly felt like discovering a hidden gem. This place has soul, flavour, and energy easily the best pub I’ve ever been to. Can’t wait to come back – 10/10 all round

If looking for good pub food then certainly worth a visit. Really friendly service at the table, young bar staff lacked that friendly welcome. Close to Stansted Airport and much better than airport offerings the place had a nice atmosphere of locals and visitors. Menu was varied and partners fish and chips recommended. Steak and ale pie was OK but pastry fat not mixed properly leaving finish having translucent patches in pastry. Sticky toffee pud was OK but lacked depth of flavour, suggest choice of sugar caused this but overall a pleasant meal and fair value.

Visited here last Saturday, table and cutlery was very clean. We ordered an all day breakfast and the special board Shepherds pie and 2 cups of tea . All day breakfast was nice and hot but the bread and butter turned out to be bread and margarine, the Shepherds pie and veg was only luke warm. With the tea I had to ask for another tea bag for one of the cups as it was milky with a very light brown colour to it ( I like strong tea). Tea was reasonably priced if it comes out stronger at £1.50 a cup. The 2 meals brought the price to almost £27 . I will admit both meals had good quality food on both plates and the flavours were good, but the Shepherds pie needed heating up more. Service was good and all staff we encountered were friendly and efficient
