Great lunch for our Christmas get together (approximately 30 of us). Well organised and lovely food. We had a mixture of all three courses between us and everyone enjoyed it. Christmas can often be a bit hit and miss for food especially for large groups, but this was outstanding. Would fully recommend.

We went here last Sunday for lunch for my mother in law's birthday lunch. We all arrived not long ahead of our booking slot and were shown to our table by a member of staff and before we had even taken our coats off and sat down we were asked what drinks we wanted! I know there is keen but this was just a bit too keen. My wife replied that we needed a bit of time to decide and quite rightly so. After around five to ten minutes we placed our drinks and food orders. That was another debacle - a whole 60 minutes to before our food arrived! That was totally unacceptable and the place wasn't even busy. The food when it eventually arrived was actually very good but our experience had been tainted by the two incidents beforehand. Also the Wi-FI wasn't working and didn't really get much enthusiasm to help resolve it that I just gave up.

We came for Easter Sunday lunch and the place was packed! The food was incredibly tasty. Good portion size and we felt full when we left (as you should when you've had a roast!) An adult roast was between £16-£19, which is a little more expensive than we'd usually pay, but you absolutely pay for what you get! The kids menu was good value, 3 courses for £10....same amazing quality. Did I mention the Easter Chocolate Heaven pudding? *Chefs kiss!!

Came here last march and had a lovely roast dinner with family also visited with wi and we had a great lunch Came here with friends had a lovely lunch with thfiends the only problem we had was the pice of the desserts were very expensive and I noticed the other tables that sat on the same area as soon as they were shown the dessert menu n told the price they just left . So that was 5 tables of possible extra trade gone ,we would of happily stopped had. A dessert and coffees but the price of the desserts put us off. Your desserts I know are exceptionally good and I realise ingrediants prices have gone up however the price of them is too high no other local pubs n restraints have dessert prices as high as the coach n horses. The service was very nice and I was glad they squeezed us in on a busy lunch my belly of pork was very good as was my friends pie and my other friend had two started as her main ,my other friend enjoyed her Thai curry too ....so place had lovely food. I hope the managers take note and put their dessert prices down to increase trade Many thanks

This was my second time giving them a chance after an awful experience last year - will never eat here again as a vegan. Very lazy, uninspired vegan (options) - one of which for some reason included dairy mozzarella cheese!? Please consider getting a chef with at least a TINY bit of experience cooking vegan food. It'll open up your clientele, especially in veganuary! When your only options are a pepper stack, a hot salad, a cold salad, or chips.. in 2024, there is no excuse. Ended up ordering a Buddha bowl which again, was very bland. Things from jars just emptied onto a plate with the tiniest bit of tahini dressing. I don't want to go for a meal somewhere to pay £17 for something I could've made so much better and so much cheaper at home. Defeats the purpose of going out for dinner, which is supposed to be a treat.

WORST EXPERIENCE!!!! Do not give your money to this pub. The service was VERY slow, taking 25minutes to place an order, and then in total it took nearly an hour to get some sandwiches which were VERY average. As a paying customer I would expect to not be shouted at by the ‘boss’ when I was speaking to one of the bar staff, just asking how long it will be until we get our food. He shouted at me infront of the whole pub and very embarrassingly for him infront of other paying customers. He then accused me of making up stories as I was leaving too and carried on shouting at me still. I would NEVER visit again and will be advising anyone I know not to. Word of advice to the ‘boss’, don’t work in customer facing roles if you have no manners and speak down to women.

Although the food was excellent, I specifically booked the restaurant for my party of six for lunch, but on arrival, was told we needed to sit in the bar as the restaurant hadn't been laid up from a function the night before. After trying to squash us on a table only big enough for four and our complaining we're moved to another table right near the door which we were not too happy about. While eating our food the same thing happened to another party that came in behind us. To my mind, if you have a restaurant and take bookings, then you should honour it.

We had a great lunchtime meal here. Chose this pub due to the reviews on Trip Advisor and its proximity to Saffron Walden. The food really was excellent, as was the beer. I had the stuffed pork belly, but the quality of all the meals our group ordered was of the highest standard. The only reason for not giving it 5 stars this time was that the service was slow. Think this was because they were really busy with two group events going on plus the regular bar work but they kept us informed of our order and they were so friendly with it you couldn’t begrudge them the slow service and definitely wouldn't put us off coming back. After visiting nearby English Heritage Audley End, we wanted a nice cooked lunch. Some of the eateries that popped up on Tripadvisor seemed to specialise in weird highly spiced options, not suitable for me as I have dietary intolerances. Spotted that this pub has considerable range of gluten free alternatives so we turned up on Saturday without pre-booking. Our host, the owner, was very welcoming and explained that there might be a delay as all the food was freshly cooked - no problem, the pub has a welcoming atmosphere and the beer was excellent. The food was well worth the short wait - delicious fresh and home-cooked. I had the calves liver (gluten free) and it literally melted in the mouth. We couldn't find room for a pudding, this was a shame as our host had just lit a magnificent log fire. It would have been nice to relax with some more beer for the rest of the afternoon! We had an hour's drive to get home, so had to leave. Definitely a great choice if you are in the area.

This review is for the Coach & Horses in Newport. First impressions: A nice clean establishment, adequate parking and spacing between tables. Proprietor: Jon is very accommodating and welcoming. Service: Appears to be a bit slow and a bit haphazard sometimes. A lack of cohesion with the young staff is more apparent the busier it gets. The staff are mostly charming and helpful but might make mistakes, forget, or weirdly leave you with a fork and knife where a spoon is required! One waitress has a bit of condescending back chat personality. Could be perceived as a little passive aggressive, the sort of character one would expect to encounter at a building site canteen. Dress code: Some of the young female staff dress like they're working at an outdoors Summer event or about to go clubbing after their shift. For example, excessively ripped blue jeans with half of their bare legs showing, crop tops with large mid drift on display revealing jewel encrusted pieced navel. For the venue and the prices this place charges, dress code to us is inappropriate. White on black would be better. It would cover up the flesh and would also distinguish those that are quests and those that are staff, especially when they're huddled in a corner chatting in the bar area and you’re looking around trying to figure out who to ask for assistance. Food: The pretentious description of the food v's what is served can lead to below expectations. Compared to some other pubs, C&H does not leave one with a feeling of good value for money. Price per meal is average but portion size is below average. OK if you’re a lady careful with her wieght, or a hamster, but not for a working man that could easily eat the serving twice/3x. Starters: ~£9-£10 and the portions are miserly small. For example the King prawn starter is six battered pieces, three battered prawns, with three slivers of battered avocado. The prawns were way too hot and spicy to the point it left lips burning so won’t be to everyone’s taste. You’re better off sucking on a boiled sweet and waiting for your main dish to arrive because you won’t feel any different. Main dish: Overall, in comparison to other establishments, like the starters, overpriced for what was actually served. Sunday Roast: When the Yorkshire pudding dominates the dish, you know at this point you’re going to leave feeling like you’re going to need to eat when you get home. Meat was wafer thin and not much of it, three small chunks of dried out potato, with a shared mediocre unseasoned overcooked veg platter. Yorkshire pudding was perfect but let down by a mean smear of gravy under the food. A gravy boat should have come with the dish to hydrate the food. It's not your Mum's Sunday roast by any means! Desserts: Sometimes deviated too far from familiarity. They bear the name but bear little resemblance to the traditional dish. For example the Bread&butter pudding, one of the cheapest easiest most filling deserts to make, was an overcomplicated overpriced bland peculiar tasting squared of dry stodge desperately in need of custard or cream to moisten the dish. The £8 Eton mess was a bloody mess. A peculiar mix of barely unidentifiable mush. Desserts may be left half eaten. If you're going to serve something very different, use a different name for the dessert. Bar: Lacks traditional pub atmosphere. Lack of soft furnishings in the bar side can make it noisy in that area so don’t dine on that side if they’re short on seating in the main restaurant or you could find yourself shouting across the table. Rating: High scores are easy to obtain if just drinks or take out v’s sit in food and drink so the current high rating is a bit misleading from our experience. A few small changes could make a big difference but as it is, no more than average.

Good food at a reasonable price. Save room for a lovely desert. A pleasant evening out.

The Kings arms hosted my grandfathers wake a few months ago and I cannot recommend them enough. They were kind and helpful when setting up the wake at short notice, they even offered for us to drop over some pictures of my grandfather earlier in the day of the wake, so they could put the photos up on the walls as a memorial. It was lovely for the extended friends and family to see pictures of my grandfather from over the years. The food was also lovely, there was a few packages to choose from and they also catered for a few family members allergies. At events like this there is usually a lot of leftovers but the food was so good everything got eaten during the wake and revived a lot of complaints. Thanks again to the team there, we really appreciate your kindness at such a difficult time

Went as a family of four on a Friday early evening. Wasn't greeted before others arriving after us. Sat at table and drinks and meal orders were fine. Food was good and everybody happy. Then after plates cleared away we were left alone for quite some time hoping to see a dessert menu or get more drinks but after half an hour decided to leave and had to go to the bar to get the bill paid. Then generally ignored on way out. Don't know if this is a locals only pub but service was lacking.

Very friendly welcome. Good choice for Sunday Roast. Homemade Scotch Egg very enjoyable. Generous portions for roast which we all enjoyed. Nice atmosphere.

We had an amazing Sunday roast today at the Dog and Duck, 1 beef and 1 pork. Huge portions, loads of veg, and a great cauliflower cheese thrown in as a bonus, the roast potatoes were spot on too, always a good measure on a roast dinner out! Food and plates were piping hot, bonus points for that too service was great, lovely girls, and a really nice chilled atmosphere. We shared a chocolate fudge cake desert, which was to die for, definitely food coma inducing. The best roast I've had out in a long time, well done ✔️

Large amounts of food . Service poor. We had to ask 3 times for water and glasses. The ambience was not there.
