Honestly quite shocked how the cook talks to people, shouting at someone in full view and hearing of everyone telling them to use old potatoes, swearing away at his staff and calling them idiots. Table was absolutely filthy, really gone downhill.

Really disappointing visit! Visiting this beautiful town and thought we'd stop for a spot of lunch. Ordered the BLT 1/2 pounder burger of the special menu (not a chance did I get home made chips). My partner ordered a double cheese half pounder. This came as a quarter pounder. When he politely said he ordered a half pound burger the male making the food rudely grabbed the ticket and said 'Well that's not what you ordered' and if you want that then you'll need to pay for it' Clearly the polite young lady on the counter made a mistake with the order to which we have no issue and my partner would have happily paid any difference in price to get what he ordered. What was really poor was the rude response from the man in the kitchen. Would not recommend!

Went here for some lunch before concert, ordered 2 burger meals, 1 being half lb burger, 1 a special blt. 1/4 burger arrived, ( not what was ordered ) Took it back to explain, to be told yes you did, mo I didn’t, then proceeds to show me a print out order, saying I did. I reaffirmed that was not what I requested, and he stated you’ll have to pay for the other, ( which would be fair) but his whole customer service was poor. And the food was below average ( just frozen burgers) And at a cost £30, I would expect better quality. So all in all poor customer relations and low level food quality. 😡😡😡

Thought this looked nice on a first visit to Saffron Walden so popped in for lunch. Very limited vegetarian choice, especially for sandwiches. However I thought I would stay and ordered a cheese and salad sandwich (they had no baguettes) and a banana thickshake. First - the thickshake was very thick, however it is made with flavoured syrup, I presumed it would have actual bananas in it, for £4.50. However the sandwich was truly awful, it was listed as coming with 'coleslaw' and was on the board as a 'mature cheddar and salad' sandwich. What I got was a grated cheese sandwich on white bread. For £5.50. No salad, no coleslaw. The atmosphere was odd too, there was shouting and strange conversation from the open kitchen, it felt a little off putting. I would not go back nor recommend this venue, what a disappointment.

Went to get a couple of thickshakes, my partner is a regular gym goer and drinks a lot of milkshake for weight gain so trust me when I say we have got them from everywhere ! Went today even though had heard negative reviews about them not being particularly thick and more watery which doesn’t work for him as he wants the ice cream calories - well it was thick ish - but my god it tasted so chemically mine was chocolate orange and @ £4.50 it was vile so much so I didn’t even want to give my child. Straight in the bin!!! Yukkkkkk invest money into real tasting milkshakes even McDonald’s are far better value and quality I can’t seriously get over how bad that was. I’m sure they sell well in the summer purely because of the heat but that cheap syrup or what ever you use surely makes you no money the rest of year. £9 we may aswell of binned.

I first visited Sunday 31st July at 1pm. I had my dog with me and could not see any signs so asked if I was able to bring her in and was told yes and given a table in front of the counter. Lots of people - including staff - made a fuss of her. (See photo.) I visited for the second time in October with a friend and again my dog. We placed our order and took our drinks and sat at an inside table. Within a couple of minutes a guy came over with a very aggressive demeanour and said “Is that a guide dog? No! So you can’t have it in here. You need to leave. That’s a kitchen there.” I tried to diffuse his tone and calmly explain that I thought they allowed dogs as I had asked before and brought her in to which he replied “That didn’t happen”. His rant continued and he became more agitated whilst we were hurriedly trying to gather our belongings together and other customers staring at us being thrown out. His parting shot was “A word of advice, don’t let my dad catch you with that in here”. It was shocking and embarrassing. I just wanted to run away, but my friend wanted to stay for her food we had paid for. It’s brilliant how many places in Saffron Walden are dog friendly, however, I appreciate that’s not for everyone. All that needed to be done in this situation was for someone to come over and discreetly say “I’m sorry we don’t allow dogs inside, can I help you find another table?” And when I explained why I was confused as I had been given an inside table for her and me on my last visit “I appreciate that is misleading and shouldn’t have happened. I’m sorry that we misled you” Maybe helping carry the drinks might be a nice touch! The fact that I am having to spell it out here is an indication of how lacking in customer care they are. I tried calling the number given to complain during the agreed time and one person said he’s not there and another said he was them, then lots of laughing and put the phone down on me. The Managed did call me, and as soon as I mentioned dog, he went into a long lecture as to why they were not allowed. It was a battle to interject and get him to listen to me and say that the issue was not my dog but the way I had been treated. Humiliated in front of customers and staff, accused of lying, treated like a criminal. He said the person was his son and they were aware of issues that they were working on and that he was there and that I should have come and spoken to him (“don’t let my dad catch you with that here”) and how long he has worked there and dogs have never been allowed (again implying I’ve never taken a dog in), he has taken time out of his busy schedule to call me etc etc etc. His ranting and attitude was equally as rude as his sons. Thankfully my dog has better manners. With so many amazing cafes in Saffron Walden with friendly professional service and delicious food, I will leave this one to the school kids and greasy spoon brigade.

The customer service was faultless and the venue was spotless but still maintains charactor. Now the food... I can honestly say this was the best breakfast I've EVER had (even my own). Not greasy atall, lovely golden runny yolk, no cheap deep fried sausage but a quality Cumberland, thick bacon perfectly cooked with crispy fat, homemade fried potato, mushrooms cooked and not soggy and to top it off thyme on my grilled tomato (attention to detail gets recognised). Give yourselves a massive pat on the back guys and carry on doing what your doing.

Until my visit to Mocha I thought that breakfast places in Saffron Walden fell in to one of 2 types the ‘smart’ and the ‘quaint’. The former serve high quality produce, beautifully presented, with heavy cutlery, in rooms decorated with natural wood and neutral colours. Members of the smart set eat here, the 4x4 driving ladies that lunch, retired couples, and so on. The latter cater for tourists as well as locals. They too have excellent produce that is well presented, but the surroundings are more vintage, more tearoom.

I've been to the Mocha a fair few times over the years. Given a choice, my children always chose the Mocha to go to for a treat. Now that they're all grown up and have left home, we still meet up at the Mocha. The quality of the food is excellent and the staff are always friendly and very helpful. Food is always swiftly delivered and beautifully presented. From the outside it gives the impression of a greasy spoon, naff caf, but is far from it. I used to go there as a teenager when Tony ran the place. Back then (too many years ago to mention), it was very popular with all ages and I'm very happy to see its still the same. Gavin runs his ship with a high regard for standards and quality. His staff are also very well trained and suited to the hospitality industry. My personal favourite is Jordan. She is always cheerful and smiling, even when she's run off her feet and always has time for a little chat while she's serving me. Keep doing what you're doing Mocha. "Don't fix what isn't broken"

Visited mocha on a busy Saturday morning, there were people queuing out the door. Ordered 2 ‘large’ English breakfasts which I can only describe as over priced, tasteless rubbish. The drinks we ordered were flat and the milkshake had no taste. Majorly overpriced for what you got on your plate. There sauces were clearly brought from Aldi supermarket, they hadn’t even bothered to change the bottles. For the money you charge I’d expect better quality condiments. The waitresses were friendly but I witnessed, what looked like a senior member of staff, shouting at and being rude to the waitresses. I have come to mocha for many years, however it’s gone so down hill and is incredibly overpriced for the quality of food.

I saw no reason to leave but the waitress insisted we leave and actually put a take away cup on the table for my friend to pour her barely touched milkshake in. Might I add the friend who wasn’t having a milkshake was lactose intolerant therefore certainly want going to get one. I am appalled by this experience and will take my business else where.

Cafe itself ok bit grubby plenty of tables but wouldn't return.I'm a businessman myself having vast experiences running pubs I would suggest two of the staff wait on tables leaving two behind the counter to serve and cook food easily achievable for cafe that seats 40 people. Also put menus on the tables rather than making customers queuing up outside what if it rains - charming? totally bonkers the set up of this place. I think the reason it does fairly well is because there isn't any other regular cafe!

I missed the word 'big' before the word 'breakfasts' on the sign outside. I wish I hadn't as the menu on the fry up blackboard didn't look particularly filling. I ordered 'The Gannet' but wasn't expecting much. What the menu failed to mention was 'Sausage, bacon, fried egg, fried potatoes, mushrooms, tomatoes and beans' would come in such huge portions. You really get your money's worth here. In the main, decent quality too.The Gannet defeated me, but we will be back. I'll just order something a bit smaller. The staff were infectiously friendly. As you leave they all shout goodbye and thank you....and you really feel they mean it.A couple of tiny criticisms, I'd rather pay extra for decent ketchup than suffer cheap catering sachets. We will be returning, but will take our own Heinz TK in future. Also, as someone who has spent an awful lot of my life giving a professional opinion on restaurant food, I have to say the the sausage on the breakfast, although large, was really third rate, and that's being generous. I'd rather pay a little more for something of a higher quality. Pennies on the food gross profit, but so important to people who appreciate their food. The fried potatoes were an absolute joy!

Having had a rather rude and badly informed reply to a previous review of this cafe that i wrote, i popped back in to play them at their own game and see what could be said to improve the score i gave them.Sadly i can report nothing much has changed my mind.. I still think signage is an issue here with too much assumed by the staff and management that somebody just walking in off the street will automatically know the ordering system they use, i method which will no doubt work fine in a greasy spoon truck stop on the A1, but not in a so-called cafe in a town centre. It was raining and cold outside so i ordered a coffee. This was actually rather nice if not overly special in taste. The let down was the all day breakfast i had. The bacon had been cooked to an inch of its life, the fried egg was hard - i would like an option here for yoke or not, and perhaps there should be an option to add extras of things like baked beans, mushrooms, hash browns, as the plated meal size was average, and it would give people a chance to add/remove items by choice.Im glad i did go back to sample their food, it gives me a better perspective of what they offer and a better understanding of their levels of service and cooking skills. All of which are exactly what i thought the first time i went there... shambolic and pointless. Now, this is an honest review, i went back in with good intentions to give them a second chance, but im afraid it still does not rate as highly as alot of other cafes ive been too, not just in Saffron Walden. I think its time this place revamped itself and upped the stakes on its service attitudes and menu.

So recently, when I had an opportunity to return, it was reassuring that nothing had really changed from their concept of offering an excellent cafe with good, home cooked, fresh food. Before today, the last time I visited The Mocha was to play Donkey Kong on an upright arcade console in 1982. Little has changed and what was good about it then remains good now. Steaming, brimming mugs of strong tea accompany the best, hangover-busting Full English you're likely to see in this corner of Essex.I watched as a constant queue of people were fed and watered over a period of about 90 minutes. This is a slick, well-practiced operation! A marvel no less!

Before I moved away from Saffron Walden I thought milkshakes were just like this. Mocha ruined all future milkshakes for me. They do plenty of different flavours and are the thickest creamiest milkshakes you could wish for.

bit of a hidden gem and was welcomed with polite and friendly staff. very disappointed with the quality of the bread which seemed to be stale. trying to cut through scrambled egg on toast was almost impossible. cheap bread seems to be the issue here. well done to the staff shame the owner cuts corners

Considerably more expensive tgan the Temeraire for a breakfast but on a par. Apart from the Temeraire are willing to adjust the dish to your requirements. Upon asking if I could have a Gannet and the Veggie breakfast for my girlfriend but she would not like beans and replaced with mushrooms I was told this was not possible. I offered to pay for THE BEANS THAT WOULD NOT BE ON HER PLATE. Again, this was not possible. The food is not brought in in bags to be pinged so why was an omission of beans so difficult? Never going back.

Went for a Sunday breakfast with friends, utterly disappointed with the quality and price of the food. A cooked breakfast shouldn't be hard to get right, but this place go it so so wrong. £12 for a terrible breakfast and mediocre milkshake. I won't go back. The staff were friendly though.

Another great brunch from this friendly cafe in Saffron Walden. We were greeted by a lovely girl named Tanya who took our order before we sat down.We all enjoyed our meals which included scrambled eggs, tomatoes and toast along with shepherds pie from the 'specials' board. Tea and banana milk shakes followed to make a very enjoyable visit once again.

My partner and I love coming here whenever we're in Saffron Walden, but our visit today son turned sour! As there's an open kitchen, we can see the staff working, which is nice. However, today, right in front of all the customers, a (bearded) member of staff started asserting unwanted and sarcastic 'authority' onto a poor young staff member, which did NOT need to happen in all our ear shot! It was horrible. I'm not sure he knew how bad it actually looked, and I'm hoping he didn't because he wouldn't have done it! A nice lunch turned sour. Completely put us off, that kind of thing should always be done behind the scenes. And I'm not the only one who's noticed! The food is delicious though!!!

After an overindulgent Friday or Saturday night the best way to get yourself moving the next day is with a good quality full English breakfast. The Mocha does these exceptionally well and it deserves to be packed on a Saturday or Sunday morning which it has been when I've visited.Best done with friends after a party night for a good start to the day.

We were just visiting Saffron Walden so did not know where to choose. Decided on Mocha Diner as it looked pretty busy and this is always a good sign. We each had burger with chips served with the usual salad. Food nice and hot (not the salad obviously!) chips good but found the burgers to be tough, which is a shame. We both usually finish our food but had to leave some of the burger. Maybe the best option would have been the all day breakfasts which most other people seemed to be having.

I popped in here for the first time with my boy for snack. The food looked okay and fancied a fry up but went for a lighter option.I ordered a cheese toasty which was average along with some stale salad along with a coke and milkshake for £14.00 a bit of a joke.On leaving I banged my head on a lamp twice which was above our table and I'm short. On informing the staff she was very rude and upon leaving heard her commenting so this is why I've wrote this review. Will not return and will not recommend.

Popped into Saffers to peruse the market and shops, found several pubs and restaurants displaying a lot of nonsense on their menus before stumbling across this little gem down a windy side street hidden away a bit. A couple of expensive bicycles lent outside the window is always a good sign, and their jockeys seemed perfectly at home clip-clopping their cleated shoes around the larger-than-you'd-assume interior of this little cafe. A decent queue of lunch-rush punters were swiftly despatched by the pleasant and efficient staff, which gave us just enough time to scrutinise the blackboards for menu choices. Pleasingly for myself, the all-day Breakfast, which comes in numerous sensible options, was listed in a perfectly descriptive manner, and whilst the portion wouldn't humble the quintissential truck-driver, there were no hidden surprises, no fruity nonsense to request be binned, and novelties such as black pudding offered as an additional option, quite as they should. Also, buttered WHITE bread as an accompaniment to a fry-up is absolutely decent, and whilst I'd possibly choose toast (or fried bread) normally, I am happy to be corrected when appropriate. All in, the food was perfectly adequate, and the BLT my far classier lady ordered was suitably to her satisfaction. Oh yeah, and the thick choccy milkshake, yeah, spot-on it was. Perfect mixture of refreshing tastiness and achey brain-freeze!

You get what you pay for and its good value for money. They have everything from a salad and jacket potatoe to a gannet breakfast with the works along with 2 hot drinks all for £15. The only let down was you have to go out the front door upstairs to the toilets which are a let down and not as clean as liked.

It looks very dark from the outside, a bit of a 70's throw back. Once past the fog of cigarette smoke where the smokers sit outside the service was good. The cooking can be very hit and miss, not consistent. I would use again, mainly they serve breakfast all day.

We had an amazing Sunday roast today at the Dog and Duck, 1 beef and 1 pork. Huge portions, loads of veg, and a great cauliflower cheese thrown in as a bonus, the roast potatoes were spot on too, always a good measure on a roast dinner out! Food and plates were piping hot, bonus points for that too service was great, lovely girls, and a really nice chilled atmosphere. We shared a chocolate fudge cake desert, which was to die for, definitely food coma inducing. The best roast I've had out in a long time, well done ✔️
