Great Hotel. Rooms are plain, simple but comfortable, with clean sheets and bathrooms. The food is great with a huge menu so there should be something for all tastes. A great location for walking the hills. Quiet and peaceful too, like a calm retreat. Update 2025. The hotel is being refurbished and I think it reopens in May. It will probably be wonderful as this is what it needed to make it fabulous!

5 family and friends visited on 1/3/25 to give it a try from our usual Maa Indian, halfway into meal young waiter knocked pint over us, no apology just brought kitchen roll and left us to mop up, onion bhajis dry, chicken madras more like vindaloo, korma very watery, questioned the Ā£120 bill and asked for discount to which the owner said ā I didnāt charge for the pint i replacedā that they knocked over, in the end they reduced to Ā£100, so if anyone reads this please go to Maa as we will again from now on.

Iām getting more and more into Thai/ Malaysian/ Asian food ā especially a good noodle dish with some fried chicken, a bit of spice and I especially like it when a dish topped with a fried egg. Or a decent Thai curry / a laksa with a good kick of spice goes down well too. So when we visited Syiok-Lah, they provided two of my ultimate plates of heaven; Maggie Goreng ā Fried Chicken (Ā£13.95): Stir-fried Malaysian noodles with mixed veg, egg, topped with spring onion, crispy shallots, fresh chillies, and lime to finish. Rice Dish ā Beef Rendang (12.95): 6 hours slow-cooked beef in 10 combinations of herbs, spices, coconut milk and toasted coconut. Served with coconut rice and cucumbers. Garnish with coriander and fresh chillies We also shared a Chicken Satay Bao Bun (Ā£7.50) Everything was exceptionally delicious and we cleared the plates (as you can see). The service was swift and staff really helpful and friendly. Other dishes on their menu include Roti Canai (two pieces of flaky roti bread served with a choice of Beef Rendang or Chicken Curry), Laksa, Loaded Fries, Chicken Drumsticks and more. There is only one Vegan option currently but this may change as they grow?!

So very sad to see that Raies has closed after so many years. Thank you Max and all that's worked with him over the 40 years of business. I have lots of great memories over the years. I 1st started going in 1983 and will miss you now you have closed. I have one 'Max's favourite' left in the freezer that I will enjoy. Including having to call in on a Monday to apologies after falling out over delivery times on Saturday nights. The curries you have served have always been so enjoyable. Best wishes in you're retirement Max.

This is the 3rd time Iāve been here and I know that I am definitely not coming back. I usually go to a different restaurant but in 2 of the occasions our regular place was shut. I wouldnāt say they are racist but definitely a bit stereotypical with white people. Each time Iāve been here I was handed straight away a spoon and a fork and I had to ask for chopsticks. I like to eat with chopsticks because i think that food tastes better when you eat it with the cutlery that was originated for. And I have respect for the culture. So that put me off a little bit. But I said nevermind, letās continue. The food was bland , no spices, no chilli, no pepper, nothing really that you would find in Chinese cuisine. The only reason I am leaving this review is because later on after we started eating, a Chinese couple came in, they were handed different menus. Now I donāt think I would have understood their menus anyway because it was written in chinese, maybe they were the same dishes that were in the menus that were handed to us but one thing I noticed: when their food came to the table, it looked like proper proper authentic chinese food like I had in many other restaurants. So this was my last experience here.

I went with my partner; I am Indian, he is a white. He asked for paneer on his meat kebab. Not only did they stop his kebab coming out because they didnāt understand his order, they then tried to charge us Ā£4 extra for a few pieces of paneer on his kebab that a) didnāt cost that much and b) I gave him from my plate⦠The catalyst was when one of their staff started speaking about me in Urdu to another member of staff, assuming I didnāt understand what she was saying, and thought this was okay. When I complained and we left the venue not even touching our food, nobody had a word to say to us. I have shed so many tears because I have never been so disrespected by someone else of the same ethnicity before. Absolutely disgusting staff who need training in how to be around customers.

We ordered food for delivery at 7-30pm. It was delivered at 6-20pm, well over an hour early , but despite this it was stone cold and stale. The starters, onion bhajis and seekh kebabs were awful and the main courses bland and tasteless. We have used this restaurant previously with satisfaction, but on this occasion the meal was a disaster and inedible. A telephone call to the restaurant within 15 minutes of receipt met with complete disinterest and complacency. A truly terrible inedible experience.
