Really tasty, cheap food. Everything else about the experience was astonishingly awful. The (probably) teenage waiter was tude, impatient, didnt know the menu, or what the kitchen had in stock. Also, no-one had bothered to train him, or tell him that he was meant to be polite to customers. He waited until after he'd insisted on bringing us 'the bill' to tell us we could only pay in cash. There wasnt a bill, just a verbal total. Our confusion and outrage was answered by bringing a menu and a calculator! We were absolutely gobsmacked and the waiter just pretended that this was all normal and acceptable service...

Awful, took ages and only took cash which they only told me after I’d sat there waiting for the takeaway. Food was lacklustre and tasteless, onion bhajis are the worst I’ve ever tasted, doughy and insipid. I will never eat there again. Luckily there is lots more choice as there are quite a few Indian restaurants/takeaways in the area so you would think standards would be higher.

This was one of the worst take away Indian meals we've ever experienced! Despite costing us £30, most of it ended up in the bin. Greasy, tasteless sauces and the soggiest chapatis ever. Well, that was a massive let down. Tonight I walked upstairs to the eating in section. Nobody else there. After a while I resorted to ringing them to ask to see a menu. The guy who served me was very friendly but, clearly had no idea a bout working in a restaurant. My popadom tasted stale, my fish starter was very over cooked and tasteless, my bread with the main course was so covered in oil that I had to dry it out with a napkin and the actual main course was tasteless. While I am all for supporting local businesses, there is a limit.

Oh dear. Where to begin? Something seemed a bit different when I wasn’t asked for a name or contact number on making a booking for six people, but I didn’t think too much of it. I wasn’t concerned that the dining room isn’t visible from the street, because the Tripadviser reviews were good. And although it did feel a bit like we were stepping off the street into what was basically a take-away, I walked up the stairs with optimism. It didn’t register at this point that the carpet clearly hadn’t been vacuumed in a long time. When our table turned out to be two tables which could easily have been moved together but hadn’t been, I did begin to wonder, but we took our seats. Then the worn, scruffy decor and the dimness of the surroundings became apparent, and I began to experience significant doubt. Stay or go? All the other restaurants might be full. And the food here might be really good. Stay. Water appeared, poppadoms were ordered, and then without warning, devastation: This restaurant does not serve lager. It has no licence. And only after you have arrived and taken your seat do they think to inform you that you had been welcome to bring your own. The main courses were handed to you before the starter plates had been removed from in front of you (bizarre), the solitary server walked two dishes up at a time by way of the customer stairs and rolled cigarettes in plain sight, the sink in the bathroom was cracked, the hot tap had no handle, there was no paper in cubicle two, the hand dryer wasn’t working, and mops, buckets, brooms and other cleaning paraphernalia were lazily left in view of the diners. And one last inconvenience before you can put the whole experience behind you. They don’t take cards, which they don’t tell you when you book or when you arrive. So you have to walk down to the Co-op cash machine after your meal. (If only you had known this beforehand, you could have picked up those cans of lager). And the food? Mediocre to disappointing.

This is in my opinion the best curry about. A lot of people rave about Bradford but I'm yet to have one better than eastern spice. Everyone that works there are really friendly and the owner knows his way around spinach dishes and lamb better than anyone. The chicken rolls are not something I would normally order but have under recommendation and they are something else too, really good. I always ask for large as for the extra pound I get two meals out of it which makes it cheap to eat out. Highly recommended.

What a delight! We had the weekend in Hebden Bridge and were torn between here and another local Indian but wow did we make the right choice. Now don't get my wrong i love and know my Indian food but this really was next level! We order a takeaway and when I went to collect the smells coming from inside packed a punch and enticed you inside from the cold, wet street. The two men behind the counter were friendly and we shared a few jokes. I had to comment on how amazing the food smelt as it really was like nothing else. Everything we ordered was fantastic, in particular the Chicken Koran and the chapatis! The portions were great and we even managed seconds and there was still enough left over for breakfast (yes we have curry for breakfast!). My partner and I commented on how this was possibly the best curry either of us had had and have said we would drive over from Manchester to order again. When in Hebden Bridge you absolutely must try here. You will not be disappointed. We will be back!

In fact mine I compared more to a hearty vegetable soup than an actual curryWe were only in Hebden Bridge for 2 nights, so not sure if there is more than one curry house in a small town, but there are plenty of other restaurants and cafes in general to go to, so this one is definitely worth a swerve

If you think the combination of bleached chicken and bland sludge ladled out of a plastic jar the size of a toxic waste drum constitutes curry then this is the place for you. The upstairs lighting will scar your eyeballs, and only the uniquely bad paintings will persuade you you're not eating in a hastily made-over gents' urinal. One of the worst meals I've ever had the privilege of being able to walk away from.

It was just another rainy Sunday in Hebden Bridge and we must have walked past the place a hundred or more times over the last couple of years on our way to and from the co-op... The Eastern Spice curry restaurant and takeaway doesn't advertise nor does it spend anytime or resource attempting to lure you in to its rather shabby interior where you can buy your takeaway... We have not tried the restaurant upstairs yet!... The food speaks volumes as do any regulars you may encounter, which I did. They even advised a particular flavour 'Mirch or Mirchi' rather expensive though at about £6,,, I think not!!... We had already ordered our food, Kate had a vegetarian dish and I had my benchmark Chicken Bhuna, a dish I tend to compare any new Indian eatery by... Both dishes were very good indeed, true the accompanying raita style sauce could have been a little more subtle and the chapatti were not obviously homemade, the steamed rice was very good though. All in all it was quite lovely and at £11.50 in total it represented very good value indeed. It was the end of my Birthday weekend, most of it spent in Scarborough, including a very upmarket place called 'Jeremys' at the bottom of Columbus Ravine on Victoria avenue for dinner the evening before, that cost in excess of £50 even after the deduction of £20 for my main lamb course, which was frankly inedible. To be reasonable though my partner Kate who funded my Birthday extravaganza had eaten at Jeremys before and really enjoyed it, so perhaps they were having a bad night!!... Anyway back to the Eastern Spice, we certainly will be!!!

We tried this as the reviews were good. The decor doesn't really matter but this was too bad to ignore . I don't mind outdated shabby looks but when it looks unclean then that's not good. The Popadoms and chapatis were served in grimy looking looking plastic bowls. The curries themselves were ok , it's just the cleanliness that bothered me. As did the loo. The guy serving was lovely so I was sad to give this place a thumbs down . And I honestly do try to not be negative about places.

Wandering around looking for somewhere to eat in Hebden Bridge, I discovered Eastern Spice. The restaurant is above the takeaway and, being the first there, I had my pick of where to sit and chose a window view.I ordered a chicken dopiaza with rice and chapati and a sweet lassee.Unlike other Indian restaurants, for a few pence extra, you can specify the spiciness of your meal and rice or chapati is included with all meals too. So the grand total for my entire meal was just £7.20 which is ridiculously cheap! The meal was tasty too and arrived without delay - although I did have to remind them about the rice (I think I confused them asking for both chapati and rice).I will definitely be looking this place up again next time I'm in Hebden Bridge!

Searched the town and could only find takeaways and kebab shops open and we really wanted a sit down meal and to be waited on.Driving out of town we saw the open sign, pulled over and parked up and enquired, yes they are open.Interesting......place seems untidy and needs a paint, however, it was clean, service was very good indeed. The food you can tell is homemade on the premises, certainly a different experience to other currys we have had.Would definetly recomend a try, especially if a late night curry is required, open until 1am.Portions are huge, especially the mixed kebab starter and everything comes served on your plate.Very good value for money, we had three courses for 2 for £22.60, wow!As we left just after 12, another 4 people turned up and they also let them in no problem at all, really nice to see.If having a late night in Hebden Bridge and are peckish, give it a go!!!

You don't come here looking for smart decor and waiters in uniforms - the surroundings are basic. This is all about the food, which is excellent. I had a Veg Mathi which was well flavoured with coriander and fenugreek and contained lots of well cooked fresh vegetables. A selection of naans were soft and fluffy and the chapattis were perfect too. For drinks, we brought in wine, but I also enjoyed a lovely thick mango lassi. Poppadoms and pickle selection was spot on as well. The whole lot coming to £27 for three, which is excellent value.

After using this takeaway and restaurant for the past 16years, I felt It opportune to write a review. Never had a bad meal from here. It's almost all the same staff since opening. It's a good authentic Pakistani take out. Well done Ali and his team!

We, four mates, met here for a catch up. Being honest the looks of the place from outside is quite off putting, a typical tatty fast food outlet However two of the mates,Tony and Ken are locals and it was on their recommendation that we met up here. The dining area is upstairs and although it was a midweek night we could hear it was crowded as we went up the stairs, always a good sign. As we sat down the waiter brought a carafe of water over,a nice touch, no hard sell for a bottled water. The menu is not massive but they are willing to mix and march to suit. All dishes are accompanied by either three chapatis or boiled rice. the food was first rate and the staff were very pleasant, nothing was too much for them. As a previous reviewer has said you can bring your own drinks and unlike some similar places they don't try to charge for use of their glasses. Total cost for starters plus main each (5) £36.35. Hebden is an 'in' place and the price in most eateries there reflect this, so a real treat to find good cheap food. I thoroughly recommend this Asian delight.

Looks like a terrible place from the outside, but the curry I had was really delicious, and whilst the menu was limited, the owner made us up dishes that we requested. Not licensed so no bar, but you can take your own in, I got 4 cans of lager at the co-op for £3! The curry and the naan bread were really nice, but I didn't personally like the poppadom sauces.

I went here with my partner while staying in Hebden bridge and the food was really nice. Lovely taste and very good portions. The korma looked a bit more like a ready meal as there was no curry taste and it was really thick but im use to my korma being more like a curry sauce. The only part that was not nice was the decoration upstairs and the fact that half the light bulbs had blown and it wasn't that clean.

Not the best place to look at, but the food is very good. The naan breads are especially good as they are freshly cooked on site.

I visited here recently with some friends and we rely disappointed. The restaurant was very dirty we were sat by the window which had dead flies on it. We were given some water, no other drinks were offered. Poppadoms were ordered for the table which I did not eat as the basket they came in was coated in built up grease. I had onion barjis which weren't cooked enough and prawns which again were dirty, almost every prawn in the dish had a black line still.Needless to say we won't be back.

Great to have it open again after all the floods!! These are probably the best curries we have ever eaten(been through the menu several times). You dont just get a lot of curry sauce with a bit of meat in, you get loads of tasty meat and a delicious sauce!!Really good vegetarian meals as well!! The owner and the staff are really welcoming and nothing is too much trouble for them, they will do any combination of curry you want, and do it any heat you like!!!This curry house has transformed our lives since opening teens of years ago and probably eaten there(or takeaway) every week since!! Try it you will not be disappointed!! Take your own alchohol as well as its not licensed. Very reasonable prices for the curries which includes rice or 3 chappatis!! Well Done Ali-Wonderful Curries-A great Night Out!!xxxx

Used the Eastern Spice for the first time since it re-opened post the summer floods. Meal was great, prices reasonable and the welcome warm and friendly. The only draw back can be the waiting time

I have never eaten in the restaurant, so cant comment on this, but have been getting takeaways for years and never had a bad experience. Staff are friendly and always remember little details about my life which they enquire about, makes the service feel personal. Curries are faultless.

We have eaten in and had take aways from here about four times. Not sure why after the first one which was awful. Anyway bit irrelevant right not as they have been forced to close due to the flooding. If you plan to eat here check they have re-opened first.

Since Zaika changed hands, the service is beyond terrible. We've given them several chances, but takeaway is always horribly late and often with items missing. Takeaway 2 weeks ago took 2 hours! Went to collect tonight - 40 minutes after the stated time and still stood here waiting. No free bhaji with delivery anymore and there's always something missing from the order. Such a shame as the food is lovely. Tonight was last chance saloon and it's been a big fat fail.

Been ordering with birds nest for a long time but it has gone down hill, I ordered the salt and pepper box and it was disgusting and not worth £20 the onion rings were just onion with no batter and I don’t know why onion rings are on the menu as it is a chinese.
