Yes sorely in need of renovation. Certainly happening given the hammering and banging in the floor above the dining room during breakfast. Room tired, mattress exhausted, toilet seat wobbling and shower needs total replacement. But everything redeemed by first class, amusing and very friendly staff. Special mentions for Sugar and Spice in reception and the older lady who was a star waitress at breakfast. And can’t understand the reference to the “grumpy Scottish manager” in an earlier review. She was lovely and while I was ready to pay in full for extras she said she’d noticed that our booking included a free bottle of wine with first night dinner and we’d only had 2 glasses. She therefore took another £20 off our bill. And as in previous reviews, the food was first class. Excellent chef, super flavours, interesting but not over the top menu choice. Well done.

Wainstones Hotel is a smart place situated at one end of an attractive village. Check in was welcoming and friendly and our room was reasonably spacious, nicely decorated and comfortable. We were here on a two night break and enjoyed a good meal on the first night. Breakfast on both mornings was also good with a fine selection of options. I chose from the traditional cooked breakfast option and the ingredients were all very good quality, with particular mention of the sausages and black pudding which were excellent. The hotel is situated in an ideal location to explore the North Yorkshire Moors as well as the coast, and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

We stayed at The Wainstones last year and the food was great. However, they obviously have a new chef and the choices on the current menu are innovative and eclectic. Suffice it to say that it was one of the best meals we have had this year! Do try it, you won’t be disappointed.

I visited the hotel with my husband for lunch today. On entry, we were greeted by a very nice member of staff , who made us feel welcome. We were seated at a table and asked if we would like some drinks, so we ordered a tea and a Diet Pepsi. So far, so good. When we were given the menus, we were a bit surprised. Apart from the steak and the Parmo everything else seemed a bit too ‘Masterchefy’ . We both ordered a Parmo with skinny fries and salad because the steak was very pricey. I then visited the ladies, and to be honest I was rather disappointed. The whole block seemed to be very unloved. The silicon round the sinks is old and discoloured. It does not look clean. The first cubicle that I went in had a leak from the back of the toilet on the floor. The disabled cubicle light was so dim , it was more like a night light. But worst of all, the smell was awful. I did manage to catch a member of staff and mention the leak and the smell and she apologised and said it would be sorted. Now, back to the food. Parmos are obviously different everywhere you go, and everyone has different preferences. I like mine not too thick. Unfortunately the parmos here were very thick. They were tender, but the chicken had very little taste, other than the grease of the melted cheese, so the garlic sauce was vital. The salad was simply leaves with very small bits of radish and cucumber. My husband got a tiny bit of tomato. The salad was covered in a very oily dressing. The skinny fries were really just like McDonald’s fries. They had no substance to them whatsoever. And sadly , it was all made worse because I still had the bad toilet smell in my nose for the entire meal. The outside of the hotel is quite scruffy and a lot of the upstairs windows look sad and neglected. I don’t think we will be returning here unless it has a complete makeover. Sorry.

Have just returned from a 2 night stay and could not be more satisfied with the experience. Although the hotels interior could be more aesthetically pleasing this is reflected in the planned refurbishment next year (2025) however this can not detract from its comfort and cleanliness. A special mention must go to the friendliness of the staff and the truly exceptional food on offer using local produce wherever possible. The hotels location could not be bettered to explore the surrounding area of the North Yorkshire moors ,while the delightful town of Pickering, Stokesley and Hemsley are not too far away with Whitby about an hour away. I could highly recommend a stay the hotel for a quiet break.

The Wainstones has been one of our favourite places for many years, both as a couple and with extended family. Our most recent visit was on Sunday for lunch. The staff are exceptional, they go above and beyond to make sure their customers are happy and well looked after. Our food was well presented, plentiful and delicious. The plates were warm which makes a huge difference in keeping hot food at an even temperature whilst eating, a pet hate of my husbands is eating from a cold plate. Yes, the prices have risen but most venues have experienced price increases. Well done team Wainstones, looking forward to our next visit.

Went for Sunday lunch for father’s day as on previous occasions the Sunday lunch has always been very good. Unfortunately on this occasion the beef was tough, pink, fatty and obviously hadn’t been cooked properly. Since when had puréed sloppy sweet potato, red cabbage and courgettes been the choice of veg on a Sunday roast!!! It’s obviously gone downhill since we last visited as there weren’t many people in the place when it’s usually really busy. When asked at the end if everything was ok I mentioned the meat wasn’t cooked but the girl at the till didn’t seem bothered or offer an apology or any money off the bill. We won’t be back.

The 6th most expensive of the 17 accommodations I booked for the C2C – and it did not live up to expectations or cost. The building and rooms were dated and tired; however, the beds were reasonably comfy. The shower was an attachment in the bath – very retro. The TV was tiny and there were only two T-bags for two thirsty walkers! Breakfast was varied and cooked to order. The salad packed lunch, for walkers, was dollop of tune/mayo on a few salad leave in a biggish cardboard box – didn’t really last in the day pack! They said the hotel is to be refurbished soon – but currently, at £122 per night, it’s pricey for the standard of hotel.

After visiting a few weeks prior, which was superb, we visited again on Friday April 19th and ordered the same main course Chicken Parmesan. It came looking like it had been warmed up, dried out, virtually no bechamel sauce and chicken covering disappointingly burned. Even the chips were not as the previous visit which had been very good, more like frozen but perhaps not. Two adjacent tables had the same, looking fresh and totally different, just the chips were the same. I left most of it and mentioned it to the female more senior of the staff who seemed a little indifferent about it and assured me it had been cooked fresh. I didn’t feel it was worth going any further. It’s a shame there was an inconsistency as otherwise the food is excellent.

I booked a twin room in this hotel for one night's stay whilst walking The Cleveland Way. As we hac booked thd room earlier this year, we were disappointed to be given a room right out the back of the hotel looking out over a fire escape. The room was extremely tired and dated although it did look like the bathroom had been refurbished in the not too distant past. Toiletries and biscuits were somewhat frugal with one shower gel and a pack of biscuits to share. The beds were comfortable and clean and we did feel that it was a Covid-secure environment. We dined in the restaurant that evening and the vegetarian menu was limited to a tomato pasta which I considered overpriced at £12. I asked for an omelette instead and the chef did kindly oblige. The food was tasty and filling.Breakfast was adequate. The service offered by the owner of collecting walkers from Clay Bank and returning them the next day was a very nice touch and very welcome. The staff were friendly and helpful. We just felt that it was overpriced at £121.50 for a room for one night's stay. Far better rooms on our stay have been cheaper.

Stayed in this hotel and was extremely disappointed. The rooms where extremely dated and dirty. You can smell the old when you first enter the hotel. The carpet leading to the rooms were filthy and totally warn. They have updated the bathroom that's the only nice thing I could say about the whole stay. I had a lovely view of a roof and it felt like i had stepped back into the 1950s! Totally shocking for the price and you will not see me step foot in here again. The bed is a reallly small double and I woke up after a bad night sleep itchy. The amenities are shocking wifi was dreadful and no signal, says fans in room there was no fan in room and the cups are so small you can bearly have a coffee. The service at the restaurant was disgraceful. Abruptly spoke to by the bar maid and she just made us feel like we were a burden. If you are looking for a nice place to stay DO NOT STAY HERE! Also lovely cobwebs above the bed in the light fittings and just overall not clean. I sent my breakfast back after finding a piece of metal in it and the coffee was dreadful, Can I not get a decent coffee in this place" also my cutlery was dirty. The breakfast came out it looked fancy on the plate but it was dry and my poached egg was over cooked to the point it was a boiled egg shocking! And loved trying to eat my breakfast whilst not choking on metal having to look at snail trails on the floor. Bork

On the day there was 38 of us for the Early Mothers Day Lunch. upon arrival everybody was served with a complimentary drink, everybody thoroughly enjoyed their lunch which was well cooked, piping hot, with warm plates, generous propotions of well cooked meats (three choices), and a very good selection of vegetables, and potatoes, again cooked to perfection, followed by dessert, choice of three, followed by tea/coffee and mints. Afterwards we were entained by Jim with a game of Bingo and music and dancing, music to suit the age group. Before leaving we were served tea/coffee and buscuits. We pre-booked and attended as a large group, however the place was pretty much empty while we were there. Food was average, like it had just been warmed up. 1 of our starters and then 1 of our desserts were completely forgotten about, as they arrived after everyone else had finished after promoting the staff. I asked on the phone when booking regards catering for gluten free and I was assured they were able to, when we got there the staff were clueless about gluten free menu’s/options. I ordered a meal which I was again, assured would be gluten free, however I am now feeling the after effects. Not good!!! I visited the Wainstones for lunch with friends, it was worth the visit and I will definitely be back soon, the sooner the better. There is a special offer on main courses at lunchtime at the moment, buy one get one free. The lunch menu prices are very reasonable, a good selection of starters, mains and delicious desserts. The portion sizes for the main meals and desserts I would describe as generous. Several of our group had roast beef or roast turkey dinners, the Yorkshire puddings were massive and the meat had been cut nice and thick. This was served with fresh vegetables and potatoes. One of the group chose chicken breasts covered in bacon, mushrooms, barbeque sauce and melted cheese, she chose to have jacket potato (a generous size and lovely crisp skin) and vegetables (fresh mixed green beans, sugar snap peas, carrots, baby corn and broccoli) with it but could have had chips and salad. Lemon meringue pie, sticky toffee pudding and fruit crumble to follow. The main meals were hot and well presented, the desserts looked really attractive and tasted as nice as they looked. Well done, really enjoyed it.

On this leg of the Coast to Coast there are not too many options for accommodation other than to come down from the moors to civilisation. Wainstone’s, in Great Broughton, is very good for Coast to Coasters as all you have to do is give them a call from Clay Bank Top and they will come and pick you up, free of charge. And they will return you to the route the next morning. The hotel itself is rather basic, certainly not luxurious, but the staff and friendly hand very helpful. Our room was clean and the bed was comfortable but it was all rather down market and slightly tatty. The bathroom was rather dilapidated. We had a room with a depressing view. We had a drink in the bar, which is nothing special but we ate elsewhere. The dining room lacked atmosphere. Breakfast was excellent. Omlettes and boiled eggs as well as the usual full English. I was disgusted by the meal I and many others were served at this hotel. It was pretending to be something it certainly wasn't. As stated above, the lamb -and even the accompanying Yorkshire pudding - were inedible. Both had the consistency of leather (and, no I didn't think that could be done either!). The knife wouldn' t cut through the tough lamb nor the pudding. I complained, having given up on trying to chew the meat and failed. The waitress said, 'I'll let them know.' Don't know why, because nothing was done, and no apology was given, no offer of refund either. The place makes out that it is something special but I reckon that food had been keeping hot in a microwave for ages. How do you create a leather Yorkshire?? I wasn't the only disappointed diner at the meal either. Definitely wouldn't recommend this restaurant. By the way, it cost £21 for that and a middling prawn cocktail!! Feel well ripped off.

Restaurant quality food and service in a pub setting. We had the lunchtime special menu at £11.99 for 2 courses (13.99 for 3) For starters, there are several vegetarian options.. Potato skins, vegetable spring rolls and mushrooms. All good sized portions and well presented and deliciously cooked. The mains had only 1 veg option, the leek and potato cheese pie which was lovely with a pie crust, albeit a little unusual to have whole potatoes in it. It came with a good selection of veg and more potatoes. The others had fish and chips and the chicken parmo, both of which again were good sized and nicely cooked. The service is excellent and the staff friendly and efficient. I would recommend this place and would have given it 5 stars if it had a wider range of vegetarian options on the menu

We were invited to a friend's Golden Wedding celebration and as our journey of some 90 miles in winter-time did not really appeal; we decided to book into the hotel for the night after the celebration. We were very surprised as to how easy it was to make our booking directly with the hotel receptionist, we were even more surprised when asking the cost as we expected it to be at least double this figure. On the basis of this we didn't expect much comfort or luxury. When we arrived we could not have been more wrong. The reception was excellent and our room was very comfortable and well appointed. The next morning our breakfast was full waiter service and very well prepared and presented. When we went to pay for our stay the bill was exactly as had been quoted. I don't think that we have ever stayed in an hotel of this standard so cheaply. It really was excellent value for money and an ideal spot for visiting the North York Moors

Just ordered the roast Lamb for self, wife and mother-in-law as a Sunday Lunch. Lamb had no taste, cabbage was boiled to stew, awful, carrots and remainder of the veg were ok, but we had to ask for more as there was only enough for two people, bearing in mind one of us was 83 yr old and has a small appetite, we still didn’t have enough. Roasties and Mash were quite nice but gravy tasted greasy. All in all the whole meal just tasted rather bland and gave us the feeling of not wanting to revisit. Certainly was not worth £9.95!

Having been to this restaurant many times over the last few years today I was astounded at the cost of 1 piece of white bread being added to our 3 course meal for 3 people....an extra 50 pence for a single piece of white bread! Not only that, my husband ordered a ham hock and black pudding terrine as a starter (which I would have expected it to have been served with either toast/bread but it came with neither) - hence why, he asked for a slice of bread! We usually visit this restaurant once every 4 weeks but today may be a reason to seek other places in the area......I know it's only a measly 50 pence BUT serving something similar to a pate without bread and then charging for a slice bread is rather cheeky!

Went to the wainstones hotel this evening. Booked last minute with no problem, the place was empty. Plenty of parking. Girls in there were welcoming and friendly. We went using an entertainer voucher which made it exceptional value for money. The food wasn’t anything special but it was nice. The parmo wasn’t great and the dessert certainly didn’t taste homemade, more like a microwave treacle sponge. Nice place to try but wouldn’t go back for food, maybe just a drink next time!

Lovely traditional country pub/hotel. Enjoyed a tasty teatime special last Saturday. We were impressed with the quality of the food, presentation and service. There was ample choice offering traditional, wholesome food. I had the mince and dumplings accompanied by a selection of fresh vegetables. A real winter warmer! Could certainly recommend this place for a good value meal in a rustic environment.

We booked for 32 people for an 80th birthday party and it was fabulous! The staff are brilliant, helpful and friendly and the service was great. David is a fabulous manager and has things running like clockwork. We were one of 2 private dinner bookings but were made to feel we were the only ones there. As an event manager I am used to managing large dinners and David could teach a thing or two to some of the big chain hotels I work with! Overnight stay was also great, rooms clean and tidy and breakfast was great. All in all a lovely venue with good staff and great quality food. Thank you :)

7 of us had lunch here . Really good value for money , the food was beautiful. 3 courses for Just under £13. The portions were very big ,We all left stuffed! The staff were friendly and eager to please .the only reason I didn't mark the restaurant as 'excellent' was the bill was wrong .they tried to charge us twice for some 2 meals .I will be visiting again .

Stopped in for an impromptu meal after visiting family in the area. Offer on the board was a very reasonable, 8oz Sirloin, chips and Coleslaw for £9.50. Why not we thought, lets give it a go, hard to get too wrong. Service was good, and steak was hot, tender, cooked as we requested and well seasoned, chips were also very tasty and clean. However the Coleslaw, which was also available as a side order for £1.50, was another matter, thick chunks of cabbage and onions, including the root from both of those vegetables, at least 2" square, the mayonnaise was just too creamy and no seasoning, easily the worst experience of a Coleslaw I have ever tasted, give a wide body swerve. After letting the waiter know what I thought of it, after he asked me if everything was ok, he then informed the lady working the bar, don't know if she was management or not, but when we said thank you at the end of service and while on our way out, I said goodnight to her and I was completely blanked, unbelievable!! If staff do not want to what they really think of the food after asking them, then they should stop asking.

Not been here for years but thought we'd give it a try. The first obstacle is getting to the entrance door with exceptionally poor lighting leading from the car park down about a dozen wide steps to the door. Had to use the torch on my mobile phone! Only a handful of diners on a Friday evening (whilst other pubs in the village were packed.) A cold night and the heating inadequate. A fire in one room remained unlit. The barman/waiter was lovely and very friendly. It was pleasing to see 3 veggie options on the menu which very different from the usual, so well done to the chef for that. However, I had the mushroom and apple burger, most of which I left. It was singularly unappealing in texture and taste. I'd expected a giant mushroom but this was an attempt at some sort of mushroom and apple mush, reshaped in to a burger. The chips were excellent though, so I was sustained by that. My daughter had a chicken parmesan which she said was enjoyable but no veg or salad garnish; my husband had a steak pie which he said was ok. We didn't bother ordering a pudding.

• Poor service• Not good value for money• Uncomfortable seatingThere was a group of 8 of us and only 5 got napkins.Asked for a pint of water they came back with 8 wine glasses and a jugThe waiters were quiet and couldn't hear what we said. They did not ask us if we wanted sauces with our meals. I asked for 'a pint of water' and we got a jug that spilled everywhere and wine glasses for everyone when I was the only one who wanted water in a pint glass. They brought out hot plates using tea towels, yet due to the bad placement they could not reach us and expected us to take the hot plates into our bare hands. The parmo was £13 for a full parmo which wasn't even a parmo. It was a piece of chicken with grated cheddar cheese on top, little to no betchemol sauce. The chips were pathetic and scrappy. Not worth £13 at all. The half parmo was £8 and this is very overpriced for the size portionThe chairs don't even fit under the table making it very hard to get out of the chair and very cramped to eat in a group

Stayed at the Wainstones along the Coast 2 Coast walk. They very happily picked us up from the trail at the far side of town, and delivered us back when we wanted, in the morning - no charge. The manager there was quite accommodating and very pleasant to deal with. Rooms were reasonable size and bathroom was huge! Heated pipes were most welcome and dried the few garments we had rinsed in the sink. Dinner in the bar was good, and breakfast was lovely. The breakfast server was quite happy in her job and shared her smiles around. Great spot!

This is a charming place in a beautiful old stone building. We both had pies for lunch & they were exceptionally good - a leek & potato (vegetarian) & a chicken pie. The service was a bit off-handed but friendly. The ambience is typical English pub.

I stayed at the hotel a few weeks ago and wondered what I'd let myself in for when I saw the very dated decor in the restaurant. I know of people visiting the Wainstones for food and that it was apparently ok. Can i just say, it was absolutely stunning food. My partner had the lamb and I had the pork both of which just were so soft it melted in your mouth. Great service, great food.. A new carpet and lick of paint to modernize the place slightly would be a big improvement.

Stayed here on coast to coast. Transport offered up and down to Clay Bank Top. Compared to the very personal B and B we had stayed in along the route it was very much a typical hotel room, clean but lacked character. This was made up for by friendly staff and a great breakfast selection including Whitby kippers that were superb. Great pack up which included a choice of a salad bowl, very welcome after several days of sandwiches plus really tasty. L

Good service for coast to coast walkers with a pick up at Clay Bank Tops and delivery back in the morning.Pleasant staff who were very helpful.Rooms large enough with larger than average bathrooms. As many reviews have noted the rooms were airless with very small window with the bathroom window in our room painted shut making for a very hot night- no fans provided.Needs a makeover in rooms starting with opening windows or ceiling fans.Evening meal and breakfast were very adequate and the salad lunches ordered for our walk the best we have come across both in content and price.

Stayed here for one night while walking the Coast to Coast Path. Our room was very large but not very inspiring. The bathroom, while not very modern was huge and the shower was very efficient. Our room was quite hot and being on the ground floor the windows opened onto the car park. It was either be too hot in the room with the windows shut of open the window and hear all the noise from the car park. We had the windows open so didn't get a great nights sleep. We ate in the restaurant which was very dark and gloomy. However, there was a great choice of food which was surprisingly good. It was also great value as it wasn't very expensive and there were very large portions. All in all it was a fairly average nights stay with a good value meal.Breakfast was pretty much as expected. It was well cooked and again there was plenty of it.

As a family of five eating out can be an expensive do, that's for sure. Not only that, but also trying to find somewhere that everyone enjoys is a major challenge. For sure the Waintstones seems to fit the bill with us all. We've enjoyed a few meals now from the special buy one get one half price menu, which to be fair would be the meals that we'd pick anyway. the garlic herb chicken and goats cheese salad with new potatoes or chips is extremely filling and delicious. A favourite with hubby too. And the kids enjoy the scampi and fish and chips. Overall, for a cheap mid-week family night out it's great value, made even more so by the special offer. Long may it continue....
