The best restaurants in Lowlands

Good food, well served but if there is a large party in, it can be a bit noisy

Being a dog owner we regularly use Google reviews to check if dogs are allowed in, especially when we are visiting an area for the first time. We therefore checked The Riverbank out and saw, in the Gemini generated summary as well as several reviews ( one 2 months ago) that it was dog friendly. On turning up earlier today we noted a 'no dogs' sign on the door so I popped upstairs to check....and apparently the answer is 'it depends!', ie whether busy, how they feel on the day. This is completely unhelpful to customers as it either is, or isn't and should be up front about this. If you let dogs in it will appear in your reviews! Anyway your loss and another cafes gain as there are other lovely dog friendly places in the town (Lime Bothy, Belted Galloway) so I'd suggest you take your business elsewhere if you have a dog.

Very nice restaurant mixing classic/ modern British and European cuisine. Although for a Saturday evening in August was quiet, it seems this style of restaurant would do far better in somewhere like Bristol or Manchester or a more fashionable rural area such as Cornwall, mid-Somerset (I.e., Wells), the Welsh borders or Aberystwyth where there will be far more more foody clientele/ customers and where the chef could be more adventurous

Nice cafe at the lighthouse with amazing views. Staff friendly and the sausage barm we had was nice. Just a real shame that dogs are not allowed in any part of the cafe. It was quiet when we went with only 6 cars in the car park and 5 of those had dogs with them including ours. We would have gone again but just too cold at beginning of March to sit outside.

Lovely lunch, ciabatta sandwiches very tasty. However, Gather is closing as a restaurant to become a wedding venue. Would have recommended if it didn't close tomorrow

We loved this quaint place with extremely friendly staff. The ambience was so fitting to Scotland and scenery around the property was beautiful. There is a castle just 15 min away from schloss where you can visit during your stay. Lucy was especially helpful in taking pictures for our family and impeccable service. The pool is heated and the spa is relaxing. We would definitely stay here again.

What a fantastic place! A lovely hotel in a stunning building, great food (breakfast included + we had dinner one night), lovely staff. We brought our dog and she was made very welcome too.

As reviewed by so many others, this was a fantastic dining experience. Our food was very good indeed and the service from this family business was excellent. Recommended if you are in Dumfries!

We eat at The Pheasant quite often, despite it being a 30 mins drive from home. Great homemade Italian food using local produce. Indulgent puddings. Pity it’s closed between November and March
