Excellent food veg amazing as was pork and deep fried brie with beetrootand presentation great staff bit chilly when we arrived but a new heater was provided . Defo recommend to friends

Food is banging, could not fault it. It is quite a loud venue though and would benefit from some sound deadening.

Delicious food, plenty of space round the tables. The Brie starter and haggis scotch egg were both amazing Followed by the best chicken Kiev. The macaroni cheese side dish was incredible ( it’s not my favorite dish) and fresh veg went really well There was no hurry and the staff were lovely, my usual gripe is the price of wine. Every UK restaurant thinks selling a screw top bottle for £30 which costs 7 in a supermarket is ok However I would go back to this restaurant without hesitation

Lovely meal here on Saturday night with my husband. Had a great table in the corner by the window ( despite having booked last minute ) and excellent service from all the staff. Food was really good and can't wait to return.

Cracking couples night out while on holiday. We had been 2 years ago and really enjoyed the place so knew we wanted to return. Shared the large steak, salad and triple cooked chips. Steak cooked to perfection and pudding was excellent. Return visit did not disappoint with food or service, highly recommend.

Visited here on a trip up to the open golf with my son. Nice interior and the food was great. The haggis scotch eggs were to die for. The flat iron steak was well cooked and very tasty. We both had the mars bar baked Alaska which too was lovely. If you are in the area this is a great place to try.

In Dumfries for the weekend and booked here for Saturday night dinner. What a great decision. Friendly welcome and shown to a nice table for two. Menus brought and drinks order quickly taken. I had the Haggis Scotch Egg starter, amazing, so good, tempted to cancel my main and have another one. Our mains of flatiron steak and triple cooked fries, and mac & cheese and triple cooked fries were fabulous. The place was full with a warm buzzy atmosphere. First time visitors but won’t be the last. Someone kindly gave us a gift voucher and due to other commitments we booked for an early dinner. Much to our surprise on arrival at 5.30pm it was already busy. We were greeted and seated by friendly welcoming staff and ordered the scotch egg and panzanelle to start however the mains of seafood linguine and 1/2 jerk chicken were the stars of the show. Big chefs kiss, especially the chicken. Melt in the mouth doesn’t do it justice. Simply Bootiful. Can’t wait to go back. 🙏

One of the best meals we’ve ever had. We were a group of 24 celebrating a wedding. The food was amazing. Not a huge choice of menu but what we had was absolutely amazing and our whole group agreed. Service was fab and the staff were lovely and very attentive. Can’t wait to go back! Well done The Back Street!!!

The menu was limited, not like it was posted online. Food was fine, but unadventurous besides the starter. Nice atmosphere but shuts down fairly early.

Very attentive staff. Main courses great. Sides delicious. There was a slight issue with our bill being over charged but after an email - William very swiftly rectified the issue and we received a very prompt refund. Definitely worth a 5* review for that.

Excellent Service from all staff. Waitresses, Bar Staff and Both Chefs. Had the Scoth Egg and Chicken Kiev. Both where delicious. Every one in the party cleared there plates so tells that the food was tasty and that they all enjoyed it. Would highly recommend this restaurant. Get yourselves booked in and enjoy the food and service for yourself.

Food was absolutely fantastic, couldn’t fault any of it. One of the best meals I’ve had. Drinks were great too, especially the Irn Bru cocktail! Staff very very attentive, friendly and helpful. Would definitely comment this establishment.

I heard good things about this restaurant before making the journey to dine with a friend. I started off with the Breaded Brie which were overcooked and hollow. Then had the “famous” chicken Kiev, there’s nothing famous about it. It was tough with the tiniest bit of tasteless garlic butter in about a 3rd of the whole thing. On the plus side of it all, the home made sticky toffee pudding was to die for and the service was ok. But unfortunately, I probably won’t be making the trip again.

Delicious meal in The Back Street as always. The service is always fantastic and the food is beautiful-the Guinea Fowl Balmoral with bombay potatoes was a spectacular combination of flavours. This place is a jewel in Dumfries's dining crown!

We visited on Saturday evening 3 Feb '24 after reading reviews on here we were excited to visit. On arrival the atmosphere was pleasant and it was full. Our waitress seated us even though we were early which was good of her.To drink we chose the house red wine which was excellent. Our starter was the scotch egg which was excellent and quite substantial. We could see various meals being served all looked quite substantial. I chose the slow cooked neck of lamb served with a garlic& butter bean mash. My partner chose the Guinea fowl and cubed potatoes. When it arrived I was happy with the presentation but my first taste I literally spat it out. The amount of salt was overpowering and the whole plate tasted the same. I asked the waitress to return it to the kitchen and explained why. In that time I tasted my partner's food. His potatoes were also over salty to the point he couldn't eat them. He wasn't over impressed with his meal either saying it was overcooked. 10 mins later she returned apologised saying the lamb was brined hence it's taste. I explained that there was no mention of this on the menu and that the whole plate was too salty. Her response was to offer me something else. Why on earth would I then re order to wait for it to cook and then eat separately to my partner? I politely declined explaining why but the waitress although pleasant was young & inexperienced. My partner then ordered a dessert of rice pudding which much to our amazement was undercooked with hard grains of rice. My partner doesn't like to make a fuss so ate it. I did wonder if it was a one off so descreetly asked another diner having the same if her's was cooked, she said it wasn't! I chose not to have anything else as I was so disappointed. The waitress' response when we complained on paying was that we hadn't been charged for my main meal!! I certainly wasn't intending paying for a meal I could not eat. My personal opinion might not matter to the staff but hopefully it'll matter to other diners. The premises are also located up 2 flights of stairs which would not be suitable for disabled access. The toilets were immaculately clean.

My son and I were served very well, even outstandingly. Our waitress was smiling and I didn't have to wait long for absolutely nothing. The cook is a true master. I ate an outstanding steak. My palate experienced an orgasm of wonderful flavours. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and will definitely return here on my next trip to Scotland. Thank you

The good is very good but the restaurant is very noisy or at least has been both times we've been there due to very large parties in the middle of the restaurant. The noise from the table of maybe 15 made conversation very difficult. Service was also a bit slow--probably due to the large group. The lamb was truly excellent but I'm not sure the meal is worth the noise. I wonder if some kind of sound mitigation would help.

Been going to this restruant since it opened and not had a disappointing meal once! We went with friends for Xmas meal in evening! Everything lovely and fresh and cooked to perfection! What more can you want! Plenty to choose from and certainly loads to eat! The staff are very friendly and very accommodating! For me the ambience is just right with enough space between tables! The cocktails were amazing too! Even the mocktails are delicious! Well done to all as at this time of year it gets very busy with parties from work etc making it that bit more challenging, but as always food was just great! Have a merry Xmas!

Our Christmas night out was made by choosing The Back Street for our meal. Food was beautiful! Cocktails were fab! And the staff were lovely, attentive and nothing was too much bother for them. Can’t wait to return, such a nice relaxed place for lovely food and drink.

Very disappointed with the food..very small portions and no feedback when I explained that although my steak was cooked the way I wanted there was so much salt on it that it was burning my tongue and the one mushroom I got with it was far from fresh! I was with a party of 10 and most had a complaint about the food..including ice in the potatoes! Will definitely not return.

The family at AtlasAdventured highly recommends dining here! We arrived right at the dinner rush on a Saturday night, with no reservation, after being refused service at 3 different prior restaurants because they were too busy. They quickly found a table and sat us right away. Just for that we were so thankful! Our server, Rebecca, was just so great. She gave great recommendations and was so amazing with our toddler. Our daughter still talks about their chats! The drinks were strong and tasty, and our food was delicious. There is a kids menu available. Everything we ordered tasted amazing, perfectly seasoned, and it’s obvious they use fresh ingredients. Great menu selection, and large drink menu. I highly recommend the Breaded Brie, Chicken Kyiv, and the Baked Alaska! We ended up being there right up until they closed and never once felt rushed. Shout out to Susie and Kacey who were so nice. I love seeing good teamwork in a restaurant, and these girls worked great together. Thank you all for a lovely and memorable experience. We can’t wait to visit again.

We recently visited for the Wednesday Steak Night deal which is a sharing steak for 2 including a bottle of wine (which we took home instead of drinking on the night). My husband had the starter of Kentucky Fried Partridge which was absolutely delicious. We then had the sharing steak. Cooked perfectly. Our 2 and 4 year old were with us also and they have an excellent kids menu that is all home made. Service, atmosphere and food all top notch! Will be back

This is one of our favourite restaurants in Dumfries. Food is excellent and staff are all very pleasant and efficient.

Restaurant qui a refusé de nous servir. Cela ne nous était jamais arrivé qu’on nous refuse l’accès à un restaurant avec autant de place en raison de la présence de notre chien d’assistance. Aucune interdiction n’est mentionnée sur la porte d’entrée hormis celle de fumer. C’est irrespectueux. Notre chien était propre, sec, calme, il se serait gentiment couché sous la table pour dormir. Nous l’emmenons partout avec nous, il n’y a jamais aucun problème.

Simple interior on first floor, but excellent food for reasonable prices. Scotch egg or salmon with orange and pepper for starter and linguine with seafood can be recommended. Add a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon white wine. Top diner!

Relaxed, friendly, busy, cafe style bistro serving delicious, really good food. You look at the menu and think, well that looks ok, and then the food arrives and it's generous platefuls of absolute flavour bombs! Kudos to the chef who clearly knows how to season well and cook vegetables, fish, and poultry properly. And thumbs up for stocking local spirits. The only downside is due to the high ceiling and echoey space the sound of other diners can be intrusive. The food was excellent. Everything properly cooked. My wife had duck and I had fish neither of which were overcooked. The starters and desserts were also good. Staff attentive . All in all it was good value for money.

Never been here before. I'm on holiday and decided to stop of for a bite to eat. In all my years of eating out I've just had one of the best sirloin steaks EVER. Their chief absolutely nailed it.. I have been here a few times and visited again last night with friends. Wow! Started the evening off with some cocktails which were delicious. The food was incredible with everybody’s meal being a total 10/10. Easily the best place to eat in Dumfries by a country mile, the waiting staff are also fantastic too, nothing is too much trouble.

Came to Dumfries on a work trip and ate here. I had the camembert starter and the chicken kyviv main and was absolutely blown away by the quality of both dishes. We felt like we'd found a really special place, especially with the vibe inside. Some of the pictures of the food on Trip Advisor and Google Maps do not do the it justice at all. I would put it up there with one of the best meals out I've had this year!

This restaurant is clearly highly rated by the people of Dumfries and they are right. Central location and easy to find. The interior decor is fairly unassuming but it is nice and comfortable. The food is leaning toward fine dining at a moderate price. I had a brocolli starter that was absolutely delicious. I am a bit fussy about wine but this restaurant delivered a tasty Pinot Noir. The staff are exemplary. The kitchen produces a high standard of lovely food at a fast pace. The front of house staff are incredibly friendly, efficient and professional. They all seem to be working out of a fairly small tight kitchen but manage to work in balletic unison. Go eat at The Back Street. It is highly recommended and reasonably priced for such great food and service.

The food was absolutely stunning! Featherblade beef melt in your mouth. Chicken Kyiv tender and bursting with flavour. Mac n cheese like my mama used to make it. Flatiron steak cooked to perfection. Perfect accompaniments - tenderstem broccoli, Parmesan fries, peppercorn sauce I wanted to slather all over me in delicious delight! It made my reluctant visit to Dumfries so worthwhile! Do yourself a favour and go round to The Back Street and treat yourself!

Absolutely incredible. My family of 4 came to the Back Street to celebrate the end of our holiday in the Dumfries area. After seeing the very positive reviews about the Haggis scotch egg it's fair to say we were more than a little bit excited to try the place out. And I can tell you it did not disappoint. The food was absolutely delicious, everything was well presented with good portion sizes. The flavours and smell of everything we had was amazing. My vegetarian mum had spent the whole holiday struggling to find food that wasn't flavourless and had a variety of texture to it. The Back Street achieved this for her and she said it was the best meal she's had in a long time. Along with the delicious food came absolutely incredible customer service. The waitresses were extremely polite and helpful throughout the evening. The atmosphere of the place was also excellent, my family pointing out that not a single person in the restaurant looked sad and there were smiles all around. It's a shame we don't live closer to Dumfries because we would absolutely love to come back. Thank you to everyone who works there!
