I had read good reviews online about this restaurant and it did not disappoint. I had the soup of the day (butternut and sweet potato) to start (delicious), baked hand made pasta tubes with the most delicious filling, topped with a creamy tomato sauce and for dessert a coconut panacotta with chocolate soil served with gooseberries and smooth vanilla ice cream! My husband had the baked handmade pizza dough, filled with cheese and topped with a tomato sauce followed by a venison and beef ragu with tagliatelle. He had coffee then envied my dessert but was too full to order one! This was the best restaurant meal we had on our break. The staff were lovely including Morag who owns the restaurant with Andre, her husband and chef.

Je m'attendais à mieux au vu des commentaires. Portions assez petites, manque de saveur et d'originalité. Je n'ai pas retrouvé la gastronomie italienne ! Bonne ambiance et accueil très sympathique. The Pheasant is an authentic Italian restaurant in a rural setting, 6 miles away from Wigtown on the road to Whithorn. The entrance is a bit odd - a little corridor leads you into the dining space, with tables either side of a bar area, which immediately felt more welcoming. We had antipasto which could have been a little more appealing - we had to ask for oil and vinegar or butter for the bread and a few more olives. Everybody really enjoyed their main courses of Venison Lasagne, chicken in a butternut squash sauce, tagliatelle carbonara and saltimbocca in marsala cream with salad and parmentier potatoes. Desert was affogato and a light chocolate bonet with caramel sauce and ice cream. Would have loved to see a selection of gelato on the menu as we were lucky to visit on a glorious summer evening. ☀️ The service was friendly and warm, the food served quickly, and we will have happy memories of our night together.

My wife and I visited this lovely restaurant for the first time. The entire meal was superbly cooked and presented. The service was excellent. Professional yet friendly. We both had a very enjoyable evening. However there are a couple of issues that they might want to consider addressing. I had the best mushroom soup I have ever tasted with lovely fresh bread. However, I was given a frozen solid individual pack of butter which Looked cheap and was impossible to spread on the butter. Towards the end of our meal a member of staff started cleaning the empty tables using a spray which made the whole restaurant spell and definitely impacted on our enjoyment of our food. We will definite return to this restaurant and hope that these issues have been addressed.

A very warm welcome into a beautiful, clean interior full of curious artwork and soft lighting. Three of us seated at a table by the window in the second room, we gushed at how lovely it was. Menus brought out and drinks ordered, we began to peruse the food menu. The menu is small but full of big flavours. A small menu boasts the best food and allows the chef to perform at the top of their game. This place was no exception. One of our group has particular dietary needs (gluten free, dairy free) which were catered for without hesitation or belittlement. The waiting staff who are kind and friendly are also enormously knowledgeable about the menu and alternative dishes. The food; rustic, honest dishes full of big flavour and memory. I began my culinary delight with the homemade pasta dish: tagliolini caprese and had the saltimbocca for main. The starter lovingly enrobed in a rich, homemade pesto that I couldn't help but scoop up with a snaffled oatcake off my partner's starter! The butter and marsala sauce that of the saltimbocca was deliciously moreish. I rounded my meal off with two scoops of refreshing blood orange sorbet. I don't just highly recommend a visit to The Pheasant, I order you to go!

This is a hidden gem! To find an Italian restaurant of superb quality in the small village of Sorbie was a rather unexpected delight. The dishes chosen were excellent and the Chef himself came to our table to clarify precisely how requested variants to the menu would be served. The staff were exceptionally helpful, the atmosphere convivial and with quirky touches to the decor like the panelling in the bar from reclaimed timber. Altogether memorable and thoroughly recommended

The area south of Newton Stewart isn’t awash with restaurants, so to have a quality, authentic Italian about 15mins away from our accommodation in Port William was a result. The Italian / Scottish husband / wife team of chef / front of house have created a very relaxed and charming restaurant in a small rural village. The menu is small (5 starters & 5 mains) and cleverly designed to suit light appetites & vegetarians as well as hungry horses & omnivores. We had gnocchi with wild garlic pesto and smoked salmon to start followed by an amazing veggie roulade and an asparagus & pea pasta dish. All were delicious. The ambiance was friendly and homely, we found ourselves chatting to other tables, comparing dishes etc as you would with friends. The Pheasant at Sorbie is highly recommended for the quality of the food and friendly ambience. We also had a liqueur and one dessert with the bill coming to little more than £50.

I had the king prawn special starter (cooked in port), tagliatelle for my main and the mud pie for desert. Every single course was absolutely delicious - none of us could fault a thing. Having passed The Pheasant a couple of times and having read the reviews, I was keen to visit. The opportunity presented itself on the last day of my visit to the area, faced with a 4.5 hr journey home, the family were in need of good food - we couldn’t have gone anywhere better. The restaurant is family run, you can tell because of the care and attention they put into making you feel welcome, having a four legged friend with us on our visit perhaps meant we wouldn’t be able to visit but no!! We were escorted to a table in the family garden and our furry friend was given some water! The kids were invited to run in the garden until dinner was ready. We selected Chicken with Salsa Verde and potatoes and Pork Escalope with Goats Cheese and green salad. The children loved their Spaghetti Bolognese which like everything else was prepared with fresh ingredients / pasta.Everything was beautiful and Morag / Andrea and their team were absolutely wonderful. If you are staying anywjere in the area, this is a delightfully friendly, high quality restaurant that has the skill and attentiveness of a large restaurant with the care and attention of a family run business. We were staying in Wigtown and decent restaurants open on an evening are few and far between. We were advised this was the best in the area. We'd booked but when we got there the waitress couldn't find our booking, although we'd had a confirmation email. Happily, she eventually found it, but a worrying moment. For those who need to know, once you get in the door, the first room is all on a level, including toilets and there's room to move about, although the corridor in, is narrow. There's free parking. Our orders were taken quickly and the wait for our food was fine. We had starters of smoked salmon and parmigiana - salmon was very good, parmigiana ok. The mains were stuffed courgettes, which were ok but didn't have a lot of flavour and the burger, which was pink, which we weren't that happy about. The man at the next table complained as his burger was raw in places - I could see it and it was actually burnt black on the outside and raw inside. He complained and - bizarrely! - the waitress told him 'sometimes the chef cooks it black and blue!'Desserts were cheesecake and pannacotta - both very good. The menu is extremely limited - apparently they do take-away pizza but when asked the waitress said they don't do it for the restaurant as there isn't time to stretch the dough. The meal cost only £34 with the Covid discount, so for starters desserts and mains, plus two drinks, that's pretty good. The owner spoke to us afterward and told us they'd been run off their feet during August due to the discount and there was only one person cooking. That must be quite difficult so maybe that explains some of the problems.

Drove past at 9pm this evening and noticed a sign saying ‘take away food available open 5-10pm’ Went inside and there was nobody there. Went back to the car and called them to place my order. A girl answered the phone and when I asked if they were open she said yes. She then either handed the phone to someone else or it was taken from her and a man took over, asked him if they were open and he said no? When I mentioned the sign outside saying open until 10, he said ‘well were closing early tonight’When he took over the phone I could hear the end of his conversation with his colleagues and he was discussing a girl getting a paternity test... very professional. Definitely won’t return.

We had a superb meal here on a quiet, mid-week evening. We booked by phone at fairly short notice, and the chef/owner/host greeted us, sorted out our table. and made us feel very welcome. The menu is not extensive, but does not need to be. It includes vegetarian options, and everything is clearly cooked fresh to-order. My mushroom and chorizo starter was superb (and the chef is more than happy to adjust recipes according to what diners like or dislike). My wife's tomato soup was simple, but exquisite. Our main courses were both excellent, as was the wine. Good, non-fussy Italian food as it should be - you can see why they keep on winning awards. Will most definitely go there again when in the area.

Top restaurant gerund door een Italiaans/Schots stel waar het eten met veel liefde word bereid en men zeer gastvrij is. Zo lekker als hier, had ik nog nooit gegeten

First time in the area and this place was recommended in our visitors book at the cottage. Booked, and we are so pleased we did. Warm friendly greeting from great staff and owners made us so welcome and took the time to talk us through the menu. Local ingredients used for the base of this delicious Italian food offer. Seasonal foraging items included in the menu brought some real value to the experience. Thanks you

We booked in here for the first time for an evening meal with our 13 yr old son. From the outset the staff were SO lovely and friendly, making us all feel special. Nothing was too much trouble. Menu was modest, authentic Italian food and good range of wine and other drinks. On trend interior with a lovely atmosphere. We cannot fault this place! Food was fantastic and son's pizza was first class. What a wonderful little business running from a very unassuming place...which would not be out of place in the centre of London. This place needs to be experienced! Highly recommended. Thank you!

Had a great night out with a large group. Food all prepared properly without a hint of using precooked or outside sourced suppliers. Staff delightful but a wee bit overcome by numbers, nevertheless all delightful and charming. I had aubergine to start, lovely, followed by saltimbocca , and a fantastic indeed outstanding chocolate dessert. Special on a weekday was sea bass which was reported as really good. House wine great value. A surprise find, authentic and great Italian food in Sorbie! Delightfully informal dining, in a well executed very Italian style. Will definitely go again!

The Pheasant was on our place to go to for some time and now we have tasted the food and experienced the Italian welcome and met the owners bilingual toddler. We tried the three course lunch special, which was very good and crowned by the chocolate cloud cake.

Ate here twice during our stay in Galloway. Authentic Italian food cooked by an Italian chef, welcoming staff, good service and excellent food that is a welcome departure from the type of meals offered by pubs. Would very much recommend for families and couples.

We were staying in the Sorbie School Caravan Site, just literally a minutes' walk from the restaurant. That was the first plus! We received a warm welcome from the owners/chefs when we popped into book a meal for Sunday evening where we sat in the comfy, informal lounge area and had a drink. We sat there again later whilst we perused the menu. The food was absolutely delicious. We ladies had the Penne and Salmone, whilst the men had the soup of the day to start, tomato and wild garlic. Main courses for them were Pollo al Pesto Verdi for one and Sea Bass for the other. The sweets (ordered by the ladies only) were equally sumptuous: Mud Pie and Coconut Ice Cream and Lemon and Rosemary (sponge?) with Gooseberry Ice Cream. Yum! The layout of the restaurant is such that it can be busy but it doesn't feel it and there's lots of room round your table. So many successful restaurants cram so many tables in that you feel you're dining with complete strangers. There was plenty of time too to chat to the owners as they served and cleared away. All in all, we all agreed, that it was one of the best dining experiences we've had in a very long time.

Beautiful authentic Italian food, in a very warm and friendly setting. So glad we found this place, as the nearby alternatives all seemed to be serving pub food.

In the area / passing through, and decided to book the Pheasant for an evening meal. Not sure what we expected, and on arrival, such a small village. However the restaurant was lovely inside, the staff and owner were excellent, friendly and welcoming, and the food was very good, exceeded our expectation.

We were very disappointed last night. Been here lots over the years but last night the food was mediocre at best. The calamari looked good and was ok but it was quite rubbery. The chicken was dry and over cooked with a risotto that was just a pile of very salty plain mush. Couldn't comment on the flavour due to the salt. But no bite at all to the rice. We come here at least every year as we met here years ago and the food is normally exceptional. Maybe they have changed chef recently? Not sure we'll carry on this tradition now😞

A really good authentic family Italian restaurant - we absolutely loved it! This restaurant had wonderful food, we had the clam spaghetti and calamari which was excellent and then all had a pizza, amazing! We also enjoyed a delicious bottle of chianti. Good atmosphere with local people and tourists to the area and the staff were very professional and friendly, excellent service! If we were ever back in Dumfries we’d definitely go back.
