As a visitor to a town on a dead quiet Tuesday night, you often worry about finding a decent place to eat. This place was fantastic. Great service, great beer, fabulous food. Standards are really high, and it's the little things you notice, like attention to detail on napkin placement. Thanks.

staff were friendly enough, food portions were large and the food was really nice apart from the onion rings which we found quite tasteless hence the 4 stars. I read the comments about waiting staff staring at you in here and we had 3 or 4 all staring at us when we entered and my son's girlfriend went to the toilet and she said it felt quite intimidating with them staring at her. when at the table either taking orders, delivering food/drinks or checking in with us they couldn't have been nicer but the staring is a bit of an issue if more than 1 person has mentioned it, again hence why the 4 stars for service. Maybe a wee word frome management about them all hanging around the door area would sort out the issue with staring at the customers because it isn't a nice thing to do. We enjoyed our meal and would possibly return if in the area again.

So where do I start… I’ve been Vegan for 8 years now and have been living in Scotland for 3 years. I’ve had some questionably interesting meals out in Dumfries but nothing tops this place for sheer apocalyptic plastic created substance thrown on a plate with BBQ sauce drenched over the top. I should of seen the signs when I arrived to 6 staff members stood waiting for my arrival all of which looked absolutely terrified. Think of a Bernard Mathews tasteless turkey roast (frozen edition) crossed with one of those hockey pucks you find in Mens urinals. As I hesitantly put my knife into one of the SIX perfectly circular discs, a strange fluid leaked onto my plate. Nonetheless I continued to embark on this culinary experience and placed a piece into my mouth, with immediate effect I gagged and for a moment thought I was in a real life Truman show only the producers were attempting to kill me off or hospitalise me to spice up the plot. A thousand cheese strings and dental floss held together by an unusual watery fluid dispersed into my mouth faster than Husain Bolt. Before I met my maker I thought I’d better ask for the bill, when the waitress came back and charged me for the toxic waste I had sampled she took one look at me then one look at my plate and proceeded to ask me if I wanted to take the rest home in a box. The waitress had a trainee with her and a thought crossed my mind to either reply “my dog wouldn’t even eat this” or “does the box come with a hazmat suit” I had my stepson with me who would of been swallowed up by the earth if I had complained. So I simply told her “no thanks”. I mean a box to take it home? I thought I was going to be the one ending up in a box if I had enough courage to take another bite. In conclusion to the above I would rather eat braised bulls dick on the side of the road somewhere deep in the Congo than ever frequent this establishment again.

Great selection on the menu. Place is always bustling. Service excellent. Young staff who are on the ball, very polite and friendly.

Visited here twice over our weekend in Dumfries. American Style Diner as it says on the tin. Menu was good and almost all can be adapted to Gluten Free. Wings and ribs were fantastic.

This is a great family restaurant with a wide array of meal choices. I came with my wife and two sons, everyone thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the service was excellent as the staff were friendly and attentive. Would recommend and will also be coming back ourselves.

Had a main and 1 side each. Food was plentiful and delicious. Staff (particularly Samantha) were attentive, helpful and friendly. Couldn't do enough for us. The restaurant was spotless, as were the toilets.

The Hitching Post Dumfries offers a warm and friendly welcome. Offered a choice of tables in a very clean and bright restaurant. The menu is extensive, with a huge choice of dishes. Everything is cooked freshly for you. A great choice of hot and cold drinks. Our meal was delicious as always. We have been here many times now and never been let down. Staff are friendly and cheery, nothing is too much trouble. We would definitely recommend visiting here.

We seem to be here regularly, we have 3 sons and they always choose the Hitching Post for dinner. The staff are amazing, always busy but always attentive, professional and friendly. The best burgers you will find, great dogs, pizzas and fajitas, our boys love the sundae deserts and it's great value for money too. if you are gluten free, veggie or vegan there are fantastic options too. Lovely atmosphere.

Service was slightly on the slow side. Other than that I would go back and recommend The Hitching Post.

I usually dont post reviews but the food here was so bad so I felt I had to. What I ordered was the sessemie chicken with halloumi fries. For a start the sesemie chicken was the tuffest chicken I have ever ate. it's texture was more like a well done steak than chicken. Not to mention the bowl of soupy sauce it was drenched in. It was also an incredibly small portion for 15£. The chips weren't bad they just tasted like normal frozen chips. I tried an onion ring which for the price the portion was massive but there was more oil In it than onion. The halloumi fries wernt bad but also not great. The service was good and the waiters were friendly. The atmosphere wasn't the best it was going for an American theme but they served Sunday roasts and the building was very dull.

The restaurant was really busy when we went in last night but the staff were amazing. We had a bit of a wait (very short but maybe a little longer than usual) and the staff were so apologetic. They were really good humoured although it must have been a stressful night. Everything was done with a smile. The food…… you would expect corners to be cut or the quality to dip maybe on such a busy night but the food was beyond delicious. I had brought my other half in for his birthday as he had never been to the restaurant and at one point he commented that it was ‘in the top 5 memorable meals he had ever had’. Honestly guys, you went above and beyond and made our night really memorable for all the right reasons. Also, a shout out to the gent who took our payment (I didn’t catch his name) but he did mention it was his first night and he did a great job. Please pass on my thanks to the whole team and especially the blonde lady who served us. Again, I didn’t catch her name but she had some really cute facial piercings. Big kudos to the restaurant as well for promoting individuality. It is lovely to see folk with piercings and tattoos proudly on display. A big big tick in my book. I will definitely be back!

First time experience. Taken as a birthday treat, and a treat it was. No complaints about the service. Friendly staff that were happy to assist if it was needed. And we were kept in the loop about any extended wait there might be for our food due to how busy the kitchen was. The food itself was delicious. A notch up from the standard pub grub. But not at all pretentious. It was all about the flavour. Which was there in spades.

Excellent place to eat. Only thing I didn't like was the chips, skin on is not for me.

As a gluten free vegan I was absolutely blown away by this restaurant! On arrival we were given a full vegan MENU, including deserts, and all the items on all menus were offered as GF available. I have never had this level of provision before. The staff were friendly, professional and efficient. The environment was comfortable and easy, and didn't feel busy even though it was fairly full. Our 2-year-old guest was also fully catered for and thoroughly enjoyed himself. We were told the chef is always happy to adapt the meals to any allergens, if possible. The food was all excellent, and even the plates had 'vegan' and 'GF' stickers so everyone knew what was what. A quick search showed that even the Temperanillo is vegan! I am very used to not being able to have a glass of wine because it's not. Will definitely visit again. Thank you for a lovely evening!

The staff was very friendly and relaxed but I expected a bit more of the food. The nachos were dark fried in oil and very fat. Basically not even ok, we didn't finish the starter. The ribs where dry but ok, also too much red sause. My family members desserts were absolutely great. It is a family friendly restaurant, so I won't blame the restaurant for toddlers behaving badly :).

Everythings gluten free just about!!!! I am so glad I have found this place, for once I was spoilt for choice. I have coeliac disease so it can be hard to find places that don't have just have vegan gf options or one or two things on the menu so was surprised when I found this gem with nearly everything on the menu being gluten free. The photo is the classic chicken burger which looks a tad grotesque but it's probably one of the cheaper items and you can add things to it but I just wanted something simple. Apple cobbler for dessert and that was delicious! Will definitely be going back to try everything else.

Really had a very enjoyable meal here today. The menu is extensive with many choices. The meals we had were very tasty and were generous in portion size. The chicken and chorizo risotto stood out for me, so full of flavour. The pecan pie was impressive too. Service was spot on. Staff are informative, friendly and welcoming. This appears to be a popular venue, which is no surprise given the overall quality of the food and professional service. Well worth a visit.

Great food. Gluten free menu was the best I have seen for selection. Staff were amazing and very helpful. My 14 year old daughter who has celiac mentioned that it was great to sit down and enjoy a meal that everyone else was having. Thanks again for your hospitality.

We stopped here for some dinner after seeing some good reviews and so thankful we did. We got Philly cheese steak sandwich and Lonestar chicken for mains and we got halloumi fries and mac n cheese for sides. Portion sizes were huge and mains came with both chips, salad and coleslaw. We were too full for desserts but they looked amazing! Staff were so lovely and helpful too, thanks again hitching post!

Wife's 70th, grandsons 18th, where does the years go..... Anyways been once before and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the service was first rate yet again. What I liked was that it was great to order your food a couple of days before, well when you also have a 6, 8 & 10 year old with you and they don't like waiting...... Got there at 5.30 food was on the table 10 minutes later, absolutely delicious and the staff yet again were great. As it was a double birthday the cake was duly brought out to to a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday. Thanks for making this a memourable meal.

This was our second meal here, the choice of Gluten free food is the best anywhere. Great staff, great service, and great food. We’ll be back. Highly recommended

Not normally one for writing a review, but feel I need to share my thoughts. Myself and 6 others arrived at the restaurant on Saturday 27th April at 8pm. Upon reading the reviews for here I was looking forward to having our meal. However was very unimpressed with the attitude of some of the staff. Ordering food wasnt the best, as more than a few of us had to repeat what we wanted on more than one occasion. I have never felt so awkward and aware of eating food before. The whole table was constantly stared at from the bar area by more than one member of staff. This isn't a nice vibe to enjoy a meal with. Food was nice, can't complain about it. But definitely feel as though your staff should attend a customer service course. Sadly won't be back as feeling uncomfortable while out for a meal isn't my kind of vibe. Disappointed as reviews were good.

Staff are always friendly, the atmosphere of the restaurant is lovely. The food is exceptional, myself and family have sampled quite a lot of the menu on our multiple visits to The Hitching Post. The bar has a nice selection of both soft drinks and alcoholic drinks. The service is always great and the kitchen and waiting staff always have yoir food out to you in very reasonable timing. I would always recommend this restaurant to family and friends who are in Dumfries or are popping by Dumfries. I have also had take aways and deliveries from this restaurant and the quality of the food is still the same when it is transported and ate outwith the restaurant as it is in the restaurant.

By far one of my favourite places to eat, food is always absolutely beautiful, your are always greeted with a friendly smile and conversation, the service is great, lovely place to bring the family for a real treat.

The food is always lovely when I visit here, staff friendly and knowledgeable when quizzed about dietary requirements. Great atmosphere, fast service and everyone has amazing customer service skills.

Me and 6 friends where visiting from Glasgow and decided to come in here for a meal spend a fair amount of money in the place for the waiters to stair at us and make us feel extremely uncomfortable every time we turned our heads there was 3/4 waiters staring at us and laughing. when we brought this up to the manager they where nervously laughing her words “ wit you on about “ extremely unprofessional and would not recommend this place service is appalling and the waiters are very very rude. The waiter in particular with alot of tattoos came up go out table to take drinks i asked for a Fanta and she says “ pint or half “ very blutley, save your money and go somewhere else.

Service was absolutely shocking!! Never been treat the way I did when visiting for some dinner. To start with the waitress covered heed to toe in tattoo's shouldnt even be working there. No greeting apon arriving, apruptly making me repeat myself multiple times when I was speaking clearly. 2 waitress's stood and stared at our table the full time while waiting for food and also while eating. Not friendly at all. Mentioned this while waiting to pay our bill and machine gun kelly overheard. Joking and laughing on the way out and when confronted about it she still continued. Who ever runs this place needs to have a good hard look at who you are employing. Wont be back thats for sure!!!

Was up from Glasgow for a couple of nights at a lodge with my mates and we decided to come here . My god did we make a mistake , as soon as we came in the cottage cheese heeded waitress came over to take our order and you could tell she just couldn’t be bothered and was ignorant as hell . The food was of the same level of a Philippine food market, a widny feed it to a cockroach .The atmosphere was that of a Jew hideout in 1939 and all the waitresses stood around like they were waiting oan a jump in. They stared at us as if we were aw sitting way our plums oot and asked us to repeat ourselves like we were talking Chinese . Avoid this place at all costs only time I would go back in there would be to do a squirty poo on the floor. The smell was another issue , it resembled a chipotle mayo infused chug Worst place ever .

Just been here this evening and the food was absolutely fantastic, we had starters, a main meal and desert with drinks and the price was as good as the meals. I had bbq ribs and wings for starters and the best ribs I have had for a long time, I had the liberty burger which was stacked and tasty and to finish it off with pecan pie with ice cream. Honestly, it's not a big fancy place, but we keep going back because the food is so so good and the staff are down to earth, really friendly and polite and can't do enough for you *5 stars*

For the second time in a row, ordered sweet potato fries and was given ordinary fries... shame the service can't be better. Last night the order was placed by my mother who was having dinner there. And tonight I came in to order for takeaway. Its a shame because the burger was good, I just don't like normal potatoes.

Love the food in this place, hitching post platter is in my eyes the best thing on the menu absolutely beautiful, great menu lost to choose from, its the only American diner in Dumfries, highly recommended, nice friendly staff and not to expensive, kids love it 2

Lovely place to eat. Good selection to choose from. Enjoyed the New Yorker Chicken, was one of the best ones I have had. The bacon was lovely and lean, the Lockerbie Cheese was so tasty and accompanied it nicely. The dish was served with creamy coleslaw, salad and chips. For dessert I had the Strawberry Sundae which was simply amazing. Would highly recommend both these dishes. I will definitely return and have already recommended this place to my family and friends.

We had a big group and the place was fully booked with many Christmas’s functions held simultaneously. They seemed slightly understaffed but those in attendance were friendly. I can’t help to think they missed out on many opportunities to sell more drinks as the food delivery took priority. Nice decor in the place, simple but it worked to replicate an American feel. Food was ok, portions very good and fairly tasty. Menu was focus on the Xmas season. Would have liked to add an additional half star 🌟 3.5 stars as the place is worth more than 3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️.

The food was really great, the service that we received was terrible. I noticed on other tables that there were plenty of dirty plates even though the customers had already paid and left. I asked various people 4 times for a bottle of tap water which they finally brought to the table. The staff were so slow at clearing our table, we were waiting a good 10-15 minutes with dirty Main plates before they were finally cleared. The staff made an error taking a dessert order, we explained it numerous times that it was a chocolate fudge sundae and they brought a chocolate fudge cake.

My wife and I dined here in whilst passing through Dumfries. We called in advance to book and managed to get a table without any difficulty. On arrival we initially drove past the turning for the car park as it’s not well sign posted down the side of the building. However, once in the car park we parked up without any trouble getting a space. The staff were pleasant and friendly. The restaurant is American style with decor to give it an authentic feel. The menu is extensive with plenty to choose from. The young male waiter gave us some recommendations to eat. For starters my wife had the corn dogs and I had the nachos with added pulled pork. This was my wife’s first time trying corn dogs. Unfortunately they weren’t as good and what she was expecting, however, this was on fault of the chef, that was just her personal option on corn dogs after realising what they were. The nachos were very tasty! They held their crisp despite the pulled pork sauce. The cheese was flavoursome and the pulled pork was very tasty. The nachos came with three different side sauces, salsa, guacamole and sour cream (which was my least favourite). We were both surprised at how big the portions were for just being appetisers (although is it American style so shouldn’t be too shocked!) For mains my wife had the sesame chicken which was a recommendation from the young waiter and I had the chicken wings (Cajun spice) & ribs. The sesame chicken was nothing special, a very basic dish. This might have been how the meal was meant to be which is fine. My wife didn’t think it was worthy of saying anything about as it still tasted fine and ate it all. The chips were skin on which were nice and well cooked. Unfortunately when we asked for sauce and salt they came in individual sachets which were disappointing. This is something I’d expect from a take away place, not when dining in. I quite enjoyed my main, the meat definitely fell off the bone as advertised for the ribs. The meat with the sauce was very nice, albeit messy. The chicken wings on the other hand were disappointing, some of the bones were brittle. The wings themselves tasted not bad but I’ve had far better wings before. Both dishes came with slaw which tasted good. The salad came with salad dressing and looked and tasted fresh. For dessert my wife had the mars and Nutella Eton mess and I had the pecan pie. The mars and Nutella sundae was the highlight of the dishes for my wife. There was a good mix of mars, thick cream and chocolate sauce in the Eton mess which was very tasty! The pecan pie was surprisingly small and lacked texture. The pastry didn’t have any bite to it and the filling was ok, very average. It came with a side of ice cream which was nice. Overall, we fairly enjoyed our meal but it was nothing particularly special. The price was reasonable considering portion sizes.

From the moment we got to the restaurant the team were friendly couldn’t do nothing we fully recommend the hitching post. We have been to a few restaurants around Dumfries this is one of my favourites. Your doing a great job at the restaurant keep up the good work we all appreciate it.

We have visited here a few times now and every time, the food and service has been absolutely superb. Most recently we came as a group of 9. There was a slight wait on food this time, I assume as it was a busy Saturday evening and we were a larger group, but it was absolutely worth waiting for. The staff are so friendly and welcoming, and very tolerant of our (somewhat rowdy) little ones. The portion sizes are large, food is so tasty, enormous menu with lots of choice. We have recommended this place to lots of people and were pleased to visit this time with friends, who also thought it was excellent.

Food was good , instructions for certain items not followed as asked for no slaw or salad but was in box, asked for side door delivery as as was holiday accommodation but driver went to owners door

Overall fantastic meal, food tasted fabulous aswell as great presentation. Staff were so friendly, polite and welcoming. Highly recommend this place for a meal. Great value for the money

Great place , busy but tables are not cramped together. Staff were excellent Extensive menu food great 1 star deducted for a small piece of chicken under cooked on the sharing platter but otherwise delicious
