Disappointed with the reaction of staff members when we paid for our food and drinks,we were 4 people and wanted to pay separately, unfortunately staff over charged us for a coffee which was already paid, when we tried to explain staff became annoyed, saying' what's the fuss for it's only £3.90 for goodness sake just give it to her,we are to busy for this!! unfortunately this experience spoilt our lunch
Had a fabulous breakfast in this cafe within a very cool shop, the staff were super friendly and the service was quick, great little find, will definitely be back 👍
I cannot recommend the Oakwood Restaurant and the Highland Lassie enough. Calling ahead to make a reservation and preorder the food was a minor struggle for me—doesn't seem like the cellular reception is great there—but it was absolutely worth the small effort. Bring your own wine if you want it, Oakwood has no liquor license. Also of note: you're on a boat, the small dining room has only one table that seats six. Perhaps we should've expected it, but we were surprised to arrive and find that we were sharing the table with two sets of strangers. Don't shy away, lean into this! We all got to chatting and sharing stories of our lives and experiences, and it made the meal so much more memorable, enjoyable, and special than it would've been otherwise. The food is fantastic, I don't think there's a bad item on the menu, everyone exclaimed about how delicious their meals were, we all cleaned our plates and made room for the fantastic desserts as well. If you have dietary restrictions, let them know when you call, Gus & Gaby will find a way to accommodate you with something special. Gus was very attentive during the meal trying to make sure that everyone was happy.
If you have an appreciation for boats, especially wooden boats, dining on the Highland Lassie is an extra special experience. My partner grew up on a wooden boat and knows the craft that goes into them and how much work they are to maintain. We got to talking with Gus and Gaby and they revealed the time and effort they personally put in to restoring the boat (formerly a fishing trawler), designing the wooden decks, rails, and cabins, the types of wood used, and Gus very kindly gave us a tour of the boat after dinner to show her off. She is an absolutely stunning lady with an amazing character and history. The rooms are quite nice, too, if you're considering sleeping on board or taking a cruise!
Wonderful experience all around, definitely a memory we will treasure and a highlight of our trip to Loch Ness and the Highlands! Mahalo nui Gus and Gaby, from Angela and Forrest! Aloha from Hawaii and Orkney!
Over priced hotel in a lovely spot so it met our expectations. The room was small and expensive but comfortable enough. The welcome was very good from the woman on reception who was excellent throughout. The man on the bar and serving breakfast was pleasant but not warm. When I asked for a wine list at the bar he just listed the white wines sold by the glass - clearly women don’t drink red!! I asked for the wine list again. Considering the price of the hotel and the fact we had made our booking months in advance the unavailability of haggis as part of the promised Scottish breakfast was poor and the lack of genuine apology or offer to replace it with something else was also poor, as was the total lack of marmalade. Neither should be hard to source in Scotland! The hotel seems to rest entirely on location and it does have some gorgeous views but we stayed in lots of amazing places in Scotland with good views none as overpriced as this. And just beware the hotel is on a working slipway into the Loch with associated traffic and some views interrupted by a green mound and public toilets, none of which are shown on the careful photos on the website. Our stay was rewarded with a dinner of the first langoustine of the season. We’d chosen the hotel for its reputation for seafood and then the standard menu changed on us to something less interesting but the specials of langoustines or hake made up for that and our meals were good.
No free ketchup unless you eat in which was unavailable. On the greasy end of fish and chips. The business should reconsider not allowing takeout customers to use the squeeze bottle of ketchup, which was available on eating tables, to squeeze onto the fries in my takeout box.
We chose to visit Fjara for breakfast straight off the ferry because of the good reviews so our expectations were high.
The outlook over the bay is lovely and the greeting from one of the waitresses was welcoming. While the Fjara breakfast was plentiful, the food was served warm rather than hot. The bacon was notably good but we found the meal overall, average.
We would rate our visit as 3.5 out of 5 but there isn't that option.
Set menu which didn't disappoint. We've not been for a while but the quality and presentation of our meal was faultless. Beautifully chosen ingredients cooked to perfection. Palate cleanser bursting with flavour. 💜 We even managed the puddings which are not to be missed! Fantastic front of house ladies who could not be more helpful. A truly gorguss experience.
What a gem,
20 minutes north of Portree and worth the drive.
Friendly staff, comfortable beds, good food and a fabulous view overlooking the Uig Harbour.
We really enjoyed our stay. We all had single rooms which had a decent sized bed, a good sized bathroom. Some hotels squeeze single people into a tiny space.
Super meal. I started with the cheese soufflé, which was truly amazing - a must try. Then had the crab and pasta special. Also delicious. My husband had crab and then mussels - both excellent. They were very kind and mittens in at short notice. Great spot.
Sadly this wonderful place is closing. The welcome was warm and friendly, the setting simply amazing - you look out to sea at the Pentland Skerries, Duncansby Head, the north coast of Scotland - on a clear clear day almost as far as Cape Wrath with the mountains of Scotland .......... but down to the excellent food which is not unduly expensive but served with charm and helpfulness. - we had Chowder (5*+) seafood platter (5*+++) lasange (non fish eater!) 5* and amazing desserts. Could not have been a better experience and ranks 1st equal with one other Orkney restaurant! Just sad that it will not be operating under the current management next summer! We wish them a happy retirement!
This is the best restaurant I have ever been to for a seafood lunch. The service was absolutely perfect - friendly, relaxed yet attentive. The food was incredibly fresh and the drinks were perfectly chilled. The portion sizes were so generous and so it was amazing value for money. I would recommend it as the perfect seafood lunch for anyone visiting Mallaig (they also have non-fish options).
