I cannot recommend the Oakwood Restaurant and the Highland Lassie enough. Calling ahead to make a reservation and preorder the food was a minor struggle for me—doesn't seem like the cellular reception is great there—but it was absolutely worth the small effort. Bring your own wine if you want it, Oakwood has no liquor license. Also of note: you're on a boat, the small dining room has only one table that seats six. Perhaps we should've expected it, but we were surprised to arrive and find that we were sharing the table with two sets of strangers. Don't shy away, lean into this! We all got to chatting and sharing stories of our lives and experiences, and it made the meal so much more memorable, enjoyable, and special than it would've been otherwise. The food is fantastic, I don't think there's a bad item on the menu, everyone exclaimed about how delicious their meals were, we all cleaned our plates and made room for the fantastic desserts as well. If you have dietary restrictions, let them know when you call, Gus & Gaby will find a way to accommodate you with something special. Gus was very attentive during the meal trying to make sure that everyone was happy. If you have an appreciation for boats, especially wooden boats, dining on the Highland Lassie is an extra special experience. My partner grew up on a wooden boat and knows the craft that goes into them and how much work they are to maintain. We got to talking with Gus and Gaby and they revealed the time and effort they personally put in to restoring the boat (formerly a fishing trawler), designing the wooden decks, rails, and cabins, the types of wood used, and Gus very kindly gave us a tour of the boat after dinner to show her off. She is an absolutely stunning lady with an amazing character and history. The rooms are quite nice, too, if you're considering sleeping on board or taking a cruise! Wonderful experience all around, definitely a memory we will treasure and a highlight of our trip to Loch Ness and the Highlands! Mahalo nui Gus and Gaby, from Angela and Forrest! Aloha from Hawaii and Orkney!

We visited Oakwood on Saturday the 11th of May, 2019 and we had such a great time I forgot to leave a review. Coming across some old photos we were profoundly struck by how wholesome and wonderful our experience was dining with thed team at Oakwood. The food was incredible and one of the unique cuisine experiences of our 6 month trip. Gus was a wonderful host and we truely enjoyed his dry humour and banter. I strongly recommend making the drive out for a dinner you won't forget.

We went to Highland Lassie for lunch to celebrate my fathers very big birthday. Gus and Gaby went out of their way to make him feel special. He lives a bit of banter. The food was first class as usual. A lovely place to go for lunch, especially if you want more of a personalised service.

We booked this restaurant for a birthday celebration and were certainly not disappointed. The whole experience was excellent the dining room on the beautifully renovated boat was very tastefully refurbished, the food was excellent all cooked to order and although not a big menu there was a good choice and all beautifully cooked. Last but not least the host and hostess were lovely and created a lovely atmosphere we will definitely return.

We received a welcoming wave as we cruised past the restaurant heading to Fort William and thought that it would be a lovely place to eat on the way back to Inverness. Phoned and tried to book a table but due to covid restrictions there were no tables available but could eat outside or have a delivery to the berth which was a good option so confirmed. On the return day it was suggested that we could have a mid afternoon meal inside so accepted and had a superb meal followed by a coffee in the wheelhouse. Excellent meal, BYOB, attentive service, could not ask for anymore. Gaby showed us around their beautiful cabins and we were very impressed and would like to return for a long weekend. Only downside (which has nothing to do with the restaurant) is that you need to be careful where you berth as there are unmarked private/reserved pontoon places and we had to move boat just as the first course arrived. Great meal, great service and you cannot fault the ambience and location!

The Highland Lassie is a wonderful converted trawler which is now a unique restaurant and boutique hotel. Our delicious meal was a delight from starter to dessert, from the tasty haggis and tatty cakes, the melt in your mouth salmon ( or succulent wagyu burger) to the divine Orkney cheesecake, we couldn't have wished for better. Everything was freshly made to a very high standard. We could have dined in the beautiful dining room, but Gus was kind enough to deliver our meal to where we were moored up on the canal.

We came across this lovely restaurant by chance..... drawn in by the words local produce ,home cooked meals. We weren’t disappointed. Had this wee place recommended to us. It turned out to be a great recommendation, the food was amazing. Lovely fresh seafood is their specialty, and it was cooked to perfection. The chowder was delicious and the mixed seafood main was cooked in a white wine, cream and tarragon sauce that was right up there with the tastiest I have ever had. Great service, very competitively priced and the couple who run it know what they are doing. Highly recommended to anyone visiting the Inverness area.

There is a varied menu plus a daily specials board which means you have some difficult choices to make. All dishes utilise only the finest of locally sourced ingredients. For our main courses the three of us ordered halibut in a prawn sauce, venison with dumplings and a sirloin steak. Each was served with vegetables and potatoes and was beautifully cooked and well presented. As the restaurant is not licensed we brought our own wines to compliment our meal - no corkage charge! The service provided by Gus and his team added to the relaxed atmosphere, being as efficient as it was friendly.Do not leave without a visit to the shop to check out their Harris Tweed range of bags, purses etc - unbelievable value! We all enjoyed our evening immensely and look forward to our next visit.

As we finished our tour of the Loch Ness, we went looking for something to eat. We could have eaten at the site, but limited options in a big setting didn’t appeal to us. We noticed Oakwood at the end of the driveway and were thrilled we found it. Homemade cooking, amazing Mac n Cheese and their beef dish was so good. Ended off the meal with a walk through of their ship and picked up some nice Harris Tweed items, paying far less than in the big name stores.

I have passed Oakwood hundreds of times and never noticed it before but it's one of the hidden gems in the Inverness area. My friend had been several times before and was keen to take me there saying it was "Traditional Scottish fayre with a bit of Scottish banter thrown in for luck". Gus is the ultimate maître d' with his Orcadian island wit and almost being "off-hand" but it's part of the service that you end up loving. The food was beautiful and clearly home made. We had good service and ended up talking to the nearby table where it turned out the chef was having a night off. They are such a lovely crowd and I will definitely be back.

We always try to get at least one meal in at the Oakwood when we visit Inverness. It's 10 minutes in the car. Although they had a restricted menu due to illness there was still plenty to choose from and, as ever, it was delicious. Even our vegetarian nephew had a choice of three main courses and he loved it. I had the haggis, neeps and tatties and it came in the shape of a pie. It was very very nice. We ate from the Light Bites menu at lunch time and the portions were just right for lunch. We'll definatlely be returning and hopefully get there one evening too and maybe bring our own bottle - there's no corkage! If you're into Harris Tweed then there's a surprise waiting for you with a large selection of tweed and leather bags etc in the adjoining shop. We came back to Oakwood after a first visit in 2015 and weren't disappointed. The food was delicious and the atmosphere really great. The host has a brilliant kind of humor and soon discovered that we're German and some jokes with us. They won't sell alcohol in the restaurant, so it's kind of bring-your-own-beer (they tell you on the telephone already). I recommend to book a table there as it is a kind of hidden gem and they close in winter times earlier, if there are no bookings.

Me and my wife stopped here for lunch, looking for a light bite to eat and after looking at the menu, ordered 2 soups and were told there is only one portion left. I opted for the bacon sandwich with ascratch of butter and recieved a doorstop of bread laden in butter with uncooked bacon. My wifes soup was tasty if porridge like in consistency, and when i produced my bank card to pay for my £9 bill, the man proceeded to tell me that it wasnt convinient for him to take a card payment for a bill so small, and proceeded to tell us how much it costs him to rent the machime. There is no sign to say card payments over a certain price only, and i found this innapropriate, as its 2018, most people paay with card. Pretty dissapointed, wont be back

Amazed at the reviews as this seemed like home cooking which hadn’t turned out as planned. Maybe we made poor choices but the chicken stroganoff was sweet and sickly and the Thai chicken tasted as if the pan had burnt. Desserts were better but we won’t be back.

We were driving in Inverness and it was too early for dinner. Our hotel was south so we headed down by Lochness. On the way we saw the Oakwood Restaurant. We were accepted without reservations, which I would recommend. It is a ma and pa place. The husband is in the front and the wife is cooking in the back. It was tremendous. The place filled and there is only one seating. One of the best meals in Scotland. Do not miss this place. It is small, call for reservations, we were lucky. Also it does not serve alcohol. Bring your own.

Unplanned last minute lunch stop. Modest surroundings didn't give a clue to what wonderful food was to come. Beautiful flavoured hearty chowder, melt in the mouth beef and beautiful fresh vegetables. No licence but no corkage either.

Had an evening meal here with friends. The meal was excellent, there is an extensive Scottish influenced menu which should suit all tastes, whilst the surroundings are a little antiquated it does not detract from your enjoyment. You do need to book or at least that is my recommendation. The staff can be a little blunt but once you get over initial understanding this is not a problem. There is a small gift shop attached which is interesting to browse. Easily found from the Main Road with adequate parking.

We dined at the Oakwood last week to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. It had been just over 12 months since we visited and had come back on Holiday. It’s in a nice location close to Loch Ness. The food continues to be of a very high standard indeed, quality ingredients, very tasty with lots of choice. I had crab to start, halibut for main, and ice cream for dessert, my husband had beef followed by the whisky and chocolate cheesecake. Everything was superb. The owners and staff are welcoming and very friendly.... such a special place for us. We will be back, that’s for sure. Thank you !

This was a lovely experience, the food was not ' swimming in grease' as i saw from another review, but it was great to see that the more recent reviews have been validated. We went here for my birthday at the end of october and honestly everything was really lovely . the service was great they were so friendly from the getgo, the charcuterie board we had for starter was very filling and diverse just wish they would have told us what the cheeses were ( i think the brie was from tain though it was familair) but thats a minor niggle that we had no info. the main courses were fab the skin on chips were AMAZING , and its a dog friendly place which we loved , we dont have dogs but we did get to pet some which made our day !

We know the Tongue area very well, and like to eat locally, so it was obvious we would decide to eat at the Craggan, and i'm happy we did! The restaurant area is welcoming and clean, staff friendly, and the car park was easy even with a big van. The only problem was choosing from the menu! So many tasty things - i wish we had more time to visit again.. All three of us enjoyed our food, and we shared everything so i know it was all delicious. Thank you for making a rather wet evening so special..

Stopped for the night while doing the NC500 with my husband and 8 + 9 year old kids, one of the only places in Thurso that you can have a sit down meal! Absolutely delicious meal, got the chicken Ceylon roll as a starter and it came out piping hot and so fresh!! The flavours were absolutely amazing! My husband had the medium spice chicken Ceylon curry and said it was amazing, the flavours and spices were absolutely spot on! I had the mild beef Ceylon curry and it was equally as good! All cooked fresh to order and you can tell as it was piping hot and so fresh to taste! There is a children’s menu for the fussier eaters, my daughter had spaghetti and my son had a burger and there was no complaints from them! Our first time trying Sri Lanka food and won’t be our last thanks to this restaurant! Staff are delightful as well☺️
