We know the Tongue area very well, and like to eat locally, so it was obvious we would decide to eat at the Craggan, and i'm happy we did! The restaurant area is welcoming and clean, staff friendly, and the car park was easy even with a big van. The only problem was choosing from the menu! So many tasty things - i wish we had more time to visit again.. All three of us enjoyed our food, and we shared everything so i know it was all delicious. Thank you for making a rather wet evening so special..

We booked in advance for lunch at 12.30 pm and arrived to find the restaurant empty which is always a bit off putting. however once inside we were greeted in a friendly manner and perused the menu alongside the long list of specials. We both ate soup of the day which was a lovely cream of chicken and then I had the pie and my partner had a burger. Both meals appeared freshly cooked, were wholesome and plentiful. We enjoyed our lunch, it was one of the best lunches we had en route.(we tended to eat our main meal at lunchtime on our NC500 trip) It's a shame more people don't seem to know about this restaurant. It is advertised just before you cross the causeway before Tongue (if you are going clockwise).

Popped in here for lunch while exploring for a fishing trip, and was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. After a slump in post- Brexit shellfish exports to France the team here have been buying direct from the boats. Well done them. A very tasty fresh lunch and we were supporting local fishermen.

We ate here while staying at a B&B up the road on our North Coast 500 trip. Friendly welcome and service. Food was delicious and fresh, with generous portions. Covid measures were present which was good to see but didn’t ruin our evening. Would recommend the Lobster bisque if on the specials menu. Not many places to eat around so make sure to book in advance, especially while Covid restrictions in place

We phoned to book a table and were told we could have one if we came straight away, so we expected them to be busy. Arrived and there were only a few tables being used. Others were reserved for in a couple of hours time. Menu was decent and did have nice options. The atmosphere in the restaurant was mainly that staff couldn’t really be bothered - when other visitors came in, staff said ‘oh what now’ and they were told they could only sit outside. Staff were also heard saying that they could never contemplate cooking food fully from scratch. When we ordered we were told there would be a wait for the food as the chef was ‘blanching’ potatoes for chips. 40mins we waited for mains to come - food nice enough. Also whilst we were in, we observed another table being served their meals and the staff served a vegetarian diner with a meat meal. The order hadn’t been taken correctly and staff dealt with this poorly. We knew all the details of their complaint due to the owners discussing is behind us. We both felt very sorry for the table of diners - the vegetarian daughter had to wait probably about 15 mins whilst her new meal was made.

We were mid doing the NC500 Route 66 and popped in here for a lovely meal. Really enjoyed the food. It was clearly freshly made. We had macaroni, lasagne and the best steak pie we’ve ever tried! Would highly recommend. Only thing that could’ve improved was the choice of wine! Haha! Weegies for you eh- got to think of the booze! But overall would definitely stop in for a meal again if I was near by!

Settled back from the road it’s lucky there are signs for this gem of a restaurant/pub/hotel. We were lucky to get one of the last seats on a busy Wednesday night. The menu is full of lots of delicious choices and the staff are really friendly (as are the locals!) The portions are a good size and the food is mouthwatering (especially the sticky toffee pudding!) I had the goats cheese salad, beer battered fish & chips and sticky toffee pudding. My dad had the lobster bisque, breaded fish & chips and apple pie. Their covid regulations make you feel safe whilst dining, including a one way system for the toilet to make sure you don’t bump into anyone. If you are driving the NC500 or staying locally make sure this place is on your list of places to visit. It is also perfectly situated for one of the most beautiful views.

Booked after reading reviews and it was a nice meal. I had lobster bisque and steak pie and my wife had lentil soup and lasagne and we shared a apple tart and ice cream. Restaurant was pleasant and staff friendly and helpful. Issues that marked it down was the lasagna wasn’t very meaty and quite tomatoey and not much cheese on top and I’d of expected more vegetables than just peas with my pie. Don’t get me wrong we enjoyed our meal but with just a few tweaks it could have been better.

Visited this restaurant for dinner on our North Coast 500 trip and can truly say that it surpassed all of our expectations. The lobster bisque that was on the specials board as a starter was fantastic - if a little too generous a portion. Traditional fish and chips was fresh and well made. The haggis and mushroom risotto from the specials board was also lovely. Staff were friendly and attentive. Will definitely be recommending in the future.

Very strict rules about diners wearing masks, using hand sanitizer etc (as there should be) but this would be better backed up with serving staff wearing clean masks, rather than blackened disposable ones. The tablecloth also had stains on it from a previous diner. I ordered a glass of wine (pretty standard I would have thought) and was told they didn’t have much. The food was average at best.

Partner and I were looking for somewhere to stay and to have a quick dinner before setting away early in the morning and after travelling over 200 miles we stopped by here and went to walk into the hotel to be welcomed by a chef saying “quarter to 9, fu*k off”. For a hotel that advertises “Food served all day” we weren’t expecting that from their so called chef. We have just arrived back from a tour of Scotland and we agreed one of the best meals we enjoyed was at the Craggan Hotel. It was a rainy day and we were on our way to Deeside. We saw the sign and agreed we were hungry for lunch. We were welcomed warmly and shown to our table (the service was excellent throughout). We decided to try the Cullen Skink - DO NOT MISS THIS! It was the best Cullen Skink we have ever tasted. Beautiful fish in a silky soup with fresh herbs - it truly warmed the cockles of our hearts! To follow a huge pile of langoustines for us both - absolutely fresh and cooked superbly. We also managed to polish off a créme brûlée and a delicious cranachan. Kate came to see how we had enjoyed our lunch and we had a lovely conversation about the area and history of the hotel. It was Kate's birthday and family were arriving for the festivities. Lucky them! If they enjoyed food as good as our lunch it must have been a hell of a party.

Having read the good reviews of the Craggan we were looking forward to our meal. Sadly the mussels served as a starter were puny and not at all pleasant with 3 or 4 not having opened. I ordered the freshly roast leg of lamb. When it arrived I asked whether it was the lamb (beef was also on the menu) but I was assured that it was the lamb. The thin dark slices did not look like lamb, so the meat must have been much overcooked. When I told the owner this she insisted this was not the case. Perhaps it had been reheated.? Red wine OK Food not worth eating

Below average quality food for a pub but charging restaurant prices. Tiny portions both meals, still hungry despite ordering side orders of extra chips and also vegetables. this meal stood out in mind to the extent that later when signed up to trip advisor I had to comment on what poor value it is. Price for salmon x 2 (with chips and pathetic amount of veg) pint of Belhaven, small wine - £50.25 -and that was over a year ago, bet its more expensive now

Scallops, oysters, langoustines, 38 day aged steaks venison. Whilst lacking some of the pretentious plating, foams and other gimmicks of grander fine dining places this is never-the-less FINE dining defined by the subtlety of the flavours and sparkling freshness of the produce. Gigantic locally hand dived scallops were meltingly tender and sweet and worked well with chorizo and saffron mash. Prices are no more than you would expect to pay for food of this quality. Our group stopped for lunch, as we do every year on our weekly trip north. As usual we were met with friendly (not overly quick) service and delicious food. We would particularly recommend the cullen skink - tasty but not so rich that we couldn't finish! Tables were pushed together for us and a high chair was produced for our youngest party member. Would highly recommend for tasty soup or sandwich lunch, especially if you enjoy seafood, although there were other tasty options on the menu too. And delicious sounding 'proper' meals too.

Lots of local produce and the seafood is as fresh as it gets. The scallops are delivered by the divers who hand harvest them and they are the biggest I've ever seen (a full 5cm in diameter and 2cm thick)! The service is friendly and the plating pretty but unpretentious. The setting is great for family occasions.

Staying overnight at the little caravan site, we climbed the hill to eat at the Craggan. Service was very friendly and competent, the food was excellent, but the highlight was our scallop starter. Local scallops prepared to perfektion. The taste will linger for a long time.

Have been here several times, it is not the cheapest place, but the food was nice. Lots of fish on the menu for staters, if you don't like fish, it is either soup or goats cheese starter. Main course was ok. Main courses start about £15. Puddings were all about £6.50 each. Like I say food was good, but expensive. £70 for 2 people.

It is a little in the middle of nowhere, and the place does not look exciting from outside. But it is nicely arranged inside, and the quality of food is excellent. My scallops were well cooked and served. The dessert was excellent too. One (small) criticism : the waitress, young and unexperienced, was not really responsive, and service should be better.

Stopped off for a quick lunch whilst on our travels on the NC500 after noting a recommendation from a journalist.Bright welcoming restaurant with great views. Noted a photo on the wall of the owner with Jackie Stewart and the Duke of Kent. Seems that this place is popular with the good and famous.I had a sensational smoked salmon and prawn salad and her indoors had a giant scallop panini which was the freshest, biggest and bestest she had ever enjoyed.A great although brief stop and next time we will stop for dinner.

Went for lunch, very welcoming staff. Nice bright hotel, good food and well stocked bar. Oysters evidently very good according to friend. Well worth the short detour off the North Coast 500. Good carpark surface for motorbikes

On a recent trip to Melness we went to the craggan for dinner with some friends. The starters where fine but the main course was a disaster. Five out of six of us ordered the lamb curry, it looked very good on arrival but there was something very sinister lurking beneath the sauce. 90% of the meat in the curry was not lamb at all, it was HAM. After confronting the waitress on this matter she asked the chef why the ham and not lamb to which the chef replied, sometimes I put ham in the curry but I don't tell anyone. Considering I had the Scottish, the English, and the Irish dining with me at the table, this was no joke. It's just as well there where no Muslims with us because that could just have lit the fuse. Sometimes the food in the craggan costs a bomb but there's no use encouraging it. We didn't get anything deducted from the bill for this sHAMbles which was a bit disappointing . We couldn't wait to get HAMe to Glasgow for a real curry.

We had a week in Tongue and this hotel was our local. We had two meals there, both very good. The service was efficient and friendly. Don't let the appearance of the hotel stop you going in - the front door takes you straight into the dining room which is nicely furnished and presented.

This was another one of our selections for a good lunch break en route the north coast 500. We had not pre-booked so turning up en-masse could be a bit daunting. They took it in their stride and we date an excellent lunch. Big car park so plenty of room to park. It's not far off the main drag and was a welcome stop on our route. I would definitely come back when next in the area.Good beer and friendly welcome by the girls maning the bar.

We ate here with a friend recently and were overwhelmed by the quality of the food and indeed the service. Sirloin steak, venison and a burger all excellent. It is a place which could be easily passed; I would recommend it to anyone.

It was such a pleasure to visit this cafe and a welcome contrast to the pre-paid accommodation ran by some racketeer at Ivy Cottage. We took one look at what was on offer and fled to next ferry to Mallaig. I went to school in Inverie in 1948- 49. when the priest had an affair with our teacher. He wnt on to become bishop of the Westrn Isles while she became an un-married mother

A star on the north coast and a must visit. Gorgeous views over the Kyle from the outside seating. Family run with great service and great chat, the food was fantastic. We had lunch and had to add the sundae to celebrate the sunny day.

We visit the Larder each summer on our west coast trips. We opted for two savoury and two sweet pies to takeaway. One smoked haddock and cheese sauce, one chicken and haggis with sauce, one peach and apricot and one apple and blackcurrant. The smoked haddock pie was amazing, the best ever. The pastry was lovely too. I’ll definitely keep my eye out for this tasty pie on future visits. The chicken and haggis pie was lovely too, both pies moist and packed with filling, great sauces in them. I’m not keen on sweet pies but we enjoyed them too. The peach and apricot pie was perfect for me. Price wise the savoury pies are about right for the weight. No shortage of fish and meat in them.

Dirty tables. Dirty menus. My daughter was served a mouldy panini. Cheese in panini was plastic. Very dry tasteless cheese scone. Drinks not too bad.

Personally think £20 for just fish and chips is way overpriced. For my family a fish n chip meal would have cost £100+ with drinks, crazy!
