Amazing food, fantastic service! would highly recommend! staff were really helpful had a lovely meal.

We couldn't fault them our starters and mains were cook perfectly portions are a great size and food is of a very high quality, first ever visit but not our last. All staff great, thank you all highly recommended

A group of us away on a golfing holiday had a delicious meal here mid week. The staff were very attentive and the service was prompt. Good location and tasty dishes enjoyed by us all.

We enjoyed very much our dinner at the Sutherland house. I had a delicious Baked Haddock Mornay followed by a cheescake. My husband chose a beef fillet médaillon and was happy too. A good Chateauneuf du Pape 2007 to go with it. Our young waitress was very kind and fast. The lady who owns the restaurant having a control on everything. The result was perfect. A very good address.

The food was excellent in a very nice, understated dining area. Good menu with a variety of seafood, meat and vegetarian dishes. The owner (for 20+ years) was working the room and explained that two employees weren't there that night, so service may be slower than normal. Her son is the chef. She and everyone else were very pleasant and working hard. The place had a nice, Scottish feel to it. The only slightly off thing was paper napkins. I highly recommend this restaurant.

We ate here on our Scottish 500 trip . It’s open Sun eve which is a bonus . I had haggis which was really good . Hubby had fish . The owner Margaret is very hands on and the staff were very friendly . You need to book .

Haben kurzfristig in dieser Lokalität reserviert, da wir 7 Personen waren, hatten wir noch Glück einen Tisch zu bekommen. Essen war sehr gut und fein. Ich hatte zur Vorspeise zum ersten mal Häggis. Top. Hauptgang hatte ich ein Beef Medaillon an einer Pfeffer-Rahm Sauce. Sehr gut. Auf den Punkt. Preis ist moderat. Personal sehr zuvorkommend. Ich kann jedem Besucher diese Gaststätte empfehlen. Vorher reservieren da sehr gut ausgebucht. Die Gaststätte besteht seit knapp 30 Jahren und ich hoffe noch viele Jahre. Werde versuchen nochmals zu kommen.

Oh my, I genuinely didn't think places like this existed. The whole experience was one to savour. Absolutely delicious food, our group chose different dishes from the menu, and, as you do, sampled each others, immediately wanting what each other had. We’ve been to this restaurant on several occasions, most recently July 2019. Decent menu with lots of choice alongside the daily specials. We were welcomed with genuine warmth on arrival. There is an obvious homely atmosphere with pleasant interactions between customers and staff. There’s a bit of a wait for food but it’s reassuring that food is freshly cooked to order. Our whole party thoroughly enjoyed our meals and would’ve liked to revisit but unfortunately on one date it was fully booked and on another it was closed. Good value too compared to another very over priced local restaurant and with both larger portions and more choice.

I had read great reviews about this restaurant but was quite disappointed by the menu.I chose the hot smoked salmon salad which was OK,my partner chose venison casserole which he said was enjoyable.£42 for a bottle of white wine was excessive. I was told they were short staffed which must be very difficult to try to run a restaurant.

Simply incredible food in a great central location. All freshly cooked to order. A great little find! Already recommended to friends heading this way!

It is a nice Restaurant, but the service is unskilled and nonprofessional. We ordered amongst others a salad with salmon and prawns. We got lots of salmon and prawns but the lettuce leafs could be more. We ordered fresh berries with ice cream. We had deep-frozen berries with one (small) ball ice cream, it was uneatable. When the waitress asked us, if everything were good, we said, that the berries were not fresh and deep-frozen, she said without any regret, OK. Than we asked for the bill and we complained the “fresh” berries. The waiter said I will give this information to the kitchen. No regret no “can I do something else for you?” for compensation. Nothing!!!!!! This is not the way to acquire customers and to hold them. Perhaps their adjustment is, that we are tourists and we will leave in few days, so they are not dependent on us. What a shame. In digital age, it might be difficult to get new customers if they treat all their customers In this way.

I was fascinated to see that Sutherland House - where I have been coming for over 20 years and have loved every meal - could have some bad reviews so I read them - the common thread seemed to be primarily Americans, but tourists who dont appreciate what the restaurant is and why people love it - yes, it is small, it's family owned, the manager / owner is in her late 70s now - her son is the cook - one cook - so if you happen to be behind a party of 10 well guess what? your freshly prepared meal might be a bit delayed - I have taken at least 5 different people here in last year - every single one has appreciated it and gone back at least once - dont be put off by tourists who expect the service they get at their local TGIFridays back home

My wife and I stopped at the bar at Sutherland House for a drink and were told we could not have a drink unless we had food also. Not a great way to make money at your bar. We did eat there and found the food fine but not exceptional. The service was good until the restaurant got full then it was poor. Would not recommend this restaurant except for the fact there are not many good restaurants in Dornock.

We hadn’t made a booking to eat here but luckily they managed to fit us in as they were very busy. There was a great atmosphere, the staff were nice and efficient and the meals were excellent, can highly recommend it.

We went to Sutherland’s because that’s a family name of mine and we’re very happily surprised at how good our meal and service were. Shouldn’t have been surprised since most of our trip has been excellent. Anyway, Sutherland House was warm, cosy, the servers were friendly and efficient and the food tasty. Give it a shot when I’m Dornoch!

Booking is just about essential. But, that said, we had a very good meal in Sutherland House choosing from a wide menu. The portions were very good and the wine, South African, quite palatable.

This is a lovely restaurant with very attentive and helpful staff. The menu offers a good choice and the haddock mornay is highly recommended.

Returned to Sutherland House for the first time in a couple of years, great food and very good value.

The food was delicious, from the scampi to the steak, and there was also food suitable for children. Service was prompt and friendly - the manager in particular was very friendly with the nine year-old.

The Sutherland was recommended as the best food in Dornoch and it fulfilled its reputation to a tee (a pun on words here since the dining room was completely filled with golfers visiting from a number of countries). The food was extremely tasty, full bodied and yet artisanal in nature. The owner and her son took the time during a very busy evening ( the restaurant became too full to accept more diners the minute we walked in). There were four of us eating and we all had different dishes and we all explained our dishes as the best we had ever eaten. If I had one piece of advice it would be to not worry about saving room for the deserts - eat to your fill because the deserts are so good you would somehow find the room to stuff them down no matter what!

Sutherland House is a small restaurant in Dornoch centre. The service and food are excellent. We particularly enjoyed chatting with our server. I was going to order beef, but the young gentleman at the next table said I must have the pheasant! Unfortunately, it was a bit tough (for my taste) but the rest of the meal was great. To give you a sense of the Scottish people, this same man treated us and a man at the bar to a glass of whisky. A really homey place with great cooking!

Very welcoming surroundings, service was good. Food very traditional served in a traditional way. Decent portions, but hard to excuse the lumpy mash. It was a double hit for me as I had haggis neeps and tatties for starters followed by pheasant and more of the same mash for main. Must have come out the same pot!!! Such a shame, as the previous reviews set such a high expectation. Our usual Wine choice was Sauvignon Blanc. Our choice was the house option but was too sweet for our taste. Turned out to be an OK night out, but not raving like other reviewers.

Unfortunately I never got the chance to taste the food. My party left due to the awful rudeness of the female manager. The size of our party changed last minute due to a family emergency. This was politely explained to the front of house lady ( I’m guessing the manager). Her attitude towards us was appalling, you could hear her clearly moaning about us in the background, her huffing and complaining was heard throughout the dining area. The poor waitresses looked at us in sympathy as if they were used to her behaving like this. We then politely explained to the waitresses that we felt very uncomfortable and would prefer to leave. I have never in my life being treated like this and I would highly recommend taking your custom elsewhere. There are limited places to eat in Dornoch over the high tourist season ( I imagine this could be why the very rude manager thinks she can get away with treating customers so appallingly) Still hungry, we decided to get takeaway from the local Chinese restaurant which I would recommend as the food was tasty and service was with a smile.

The restaurant very kindly managed to fit us in at short notice for an early dinner. We were greeted by exceptionally friendly staff, a fantastic menu with a choice to suit everyone and excellent food and wine. We chatted to the very friendly owner after our meal which was so nice and really gave it a family-friendly feel. All in all a superb experience; we can’t wait to go back!

Four golfers and we all enjoyed it. Perhaps our best meal on a 11 day trip. The ladies that greeted and waited on us were delightful.

Tried calling several times. Dropped past twice on a Wednesday night at 6:15pm and 7:45pm and it said it was closed. Sign said fully booked tonight. Website says open daily 6pm. No idea when this place is open. Very poor communication and given up as I don't have time for this.

Best meals in Dornoch. My wife and o have eaten there on our multiple Dornoch visits. Just as good as ever! Beef medallions delicious with veggies and potatoes. Oh the deserts! Service impeccable.

Good varied food menu, though meat slightly overcooked. Presided over by attentive if slightly anxious proprietor. Left at the end of the meal feeling well fed and looked after.

The restaurant was fully booked. We had an early booking as we had a toddler in a high chair. The staff couldn’t have been nicer, friendly and efficient. Everyone enjoyed their meal and we will definitely return.

We called the restaurant to see if the could squeeze us in which they did no problem. The staff were very friendly and explained they had a big table coming in so we should order before they do to avoid a big wait which I really appreciated. We had scallops, Cullen skink, beef stroganoff and braised beef - all of which were fantastic. All the desserts are home made by the owner (I believe she was the owner) so we had to try the strawberry cheesecake which did not disappoint. A fantastic meal and would highly recommend. Very reasonably priced as well.

We booked here as our hotel reviews werent great and this was just 5 mins walk away. Nice little place and good food, Kids can have smaller portions from the menu at slightly reduced price. 2 adult meals, 1 child meal & drink and a bottle of wine £69. Only spoiler is we felt rushed out as we were told someone was waiting for our table!

My old Uncle lived in Dornoch and I have travelled on many occasions to see him. I have always had at least one meal at Sutherland House on my travels. It has always been of the highest standard and this time was no exception. My wife and I finished our North Coast 500 trip with friends and we had one night in Dornoch and of course, dinner had to be Sutherland House. Great staff and owner all making you very welcome. Food was amazing and includes the "Steak Menu" - WOW. There Cullen Skink is always the best. Anywhere near Dornoch, book well in advance. You will forever remember it.

Had an absolutely marvellous dinner here while on holiday. Can only agree with the bulk of the reviews here in that the food was of the highest quality, but still seems homemade. Had the Bacon, lentil and tomato soup to start amazing taste, then the Supreme of Chicken Glenmorangie for a main again superb, and the strawberry cheesecake for desert which was plain wow. My partners choices were equally good.

We were lucky to get a booking as this is a popular restaurant frequented by locals and understandably why. The food was delicious and the staff attentive and friendly. Highly recommended

Were looking for somewhere to eat while staying in Dornoch for our anniversary and after researching on line thought this sounded our best option . The restaurant was fully booked but they managed to seat us in the small bar area. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and service was quick. My husband had a steak with pepper sauce which he thoroughly enjoyed and I had the salmon with mussel sauce from the specials board which was excellent. The desert menu was varied and I was spoilt for choice but I settled for the mirangue and fruit and my husband had the sherry trifle both of which were delicious. I would highly recommend this restaurant and when we return to Dornoch would definitely visit again.

We were very attended to when he dined here for dinner. The bread was noteworthy. The wine list offered reasonable options and the food was excellent. The people running this restaurant clearly care about what they do and their guests' experiences. We noted that a regular patron came in and was warmly addressed by name. For the taste of homemade at appetizing prices, this is a good place to eat.

Unfortunately the pepper sauce on our steaks was very bland and when the meal arrived it looked like it has just been thrown on the plate. Something we assume was supposed to be red cabbage was a dried up mess. Please serve the vegetables in a separate dish. The red wine was too cold so we asked for it to be warmed up a little but it came back just the same. However the cheesecake was good.

Food was wonderful. Our party all had different courses, and all were excellent. Food was piping hot, and good size portions.

We were recommended to the Sutherland House and initially all was well. The starter a variant on haggis was a delight. The main course however was a total disaster and should never have been presented to table. The fish was so over cooked as to be inedible but was still brought to table which in itself was something of an insult.

Just eaten at Sutherland House, and really enjoyed it. Not the biggest menu, but that means what was on offer is fresh and is of high quality. The Cajun Chicken special was the nicest meal eaten in a long time. Staff were really friendly, and the atmosphere was lovely. Highly recommend calling here if you’re in the area.

Based on the reviews I had high expectations but found the food rather bland. The chicken, sauce, potato puree and vegetables all seemed to lack flavour and seasoning. It was perfectly edible but certainly not of a high enough quality to justify the prices charged. The sticky toffee pudding was the best part of the meal but not worth £6.50. The young waitresses were very pleasant.

We had a great meal at the Sutherland House. Very hospitable. All of our group of six was pleased. Reservations are suggested, as we couldn't get in the first evening (during the week), even though it was not the high season.

We have been visiting Dornoch for golf and walking for the last 5 years and always make a point of going here. Margaret is a great hostess and the food is always reliable. Would recommend the haggis Benbraggie and the Chicken Glenmorangie. Will be back...

While in Dornoch for golf, fined at Sutherland House...made reservations at last minute because of earlier changes in plans...turned out to be a "great" decision...food, service and atmosphere were excellent...were treated in "first class" style in every way!

We only got into this resturant due to our B&B hosts but it was worth it. Superperb food with great service from teenage waitress's who were obviously trained correctly. They were excellent.

Came here expecting a bar meal but it was so much more than that.The setting,the staff & the food were all superb.I had the salmon special followed by the chocolate velvet tart,what can i say apart from delicious.My partner had the beef medallions with peppercorn sauce followed by the cheesecake again delicious.We enjoyed a bottle of good wine & finished it all of with coffees.This was our last meal on our visit to Dornoch & a very satisfactory one at that.Do we recommend the Sutherland House?You bet we do!

On holiday in Scotland ( Tain Ross-Shore ) the locals recommended the Sutherland House as THE restaurant for a top class meal. They were so right. The service and food was excellent. My wife and friends were all impressed by the whole evening. It was not cheap but it was not too expensive. Well worth a visit and next time in that area of Scotland, we will dine there again.

Arrived 5 minutes early,shown to our table by the drinks waitress who said, "I will be with you shortly ,as just serving a big order",2 minutes later she was back,taking the drinks order,then saying the waiting staff will be with you ASAP,she was a lovely lady with short hair and glasses,anyway ,where we were sitting ,you could see 2 young girls (18-19) who never even looked our way.20 minutes later,I called over an older lady who turned out to be the owner and mentioned that no one has asked for our order,only to be told that a table of 10 ( booked before us) has placed an order and as she has only 1 chef ( her son ) and we are we are doing our best,I have came over to apologise,BUT,if I never called her over,there would be no apologies,which I explained to her and she accused me of arguing,which I was not,as I explained to her,I booked a meal and expected to be served,not left in limbo,she then said if I am not happy,leave,WOW,knowing there is not a lot of choice in Dornoch,we decided to wait,10 minutes later,because we were laughing ,the same lady askLed us to leave, we paid our drinks bill and left-58 and asked to leave a restaurant, this woman needs people skills.WOWAfter this,we we went to the Dornoch Inn,1 minute away,great food and service.

My wife and me were fortunate enough to get a double booking on 2 consecutive nights at this delightful restaurant in Dornoch . The restaurant is tastefully decorated and furnished befitting of the very best . The food is first class , with amazing choices and extremely competative pricing , including drinks . Like the proprietor, the Staff are friendly and most helpful . A restaurant to be proud of and to cherish .

This was a recommendation from the owners of Fionn Lodge, who love the place themselves. The salmon, fillet, soup, bread, etc, were all delicious. Sticky Toffee Pudding was other worldly!

We had not made a reservation but asked for a table for two (this was at 19.15). We were greeted warmly and were informed that service could take up to half an hour due to it being very busy and we had not booked. We were served drinks promptly and were given a copy of the menu. I ordered fillet of beef medallions with peppercorn sauce off of the specials board and my partner ordered a homemade beef burger. The food took around 40 minutes to arrive but we were happy to wait as we were glad to have been given a table under the circumstances. The food was well worth the wait. It was a generous portion, served hot with beautifully cooked chips and vegetables on the side. We ordered dessert too: sticky toffee pudding and strawberry cheesecake with ice cream. Both puddings were delicious. The bill came in at £51 for two courses and a pint of beer/cider each. We would definitely recommend Sutherland house to anyone visiting Dornoch.

Ate here last year and it didn't disappoint. Surroundings very clean and attractive. Staff helful and accomodating. I hadn't booked, was on my own but they found a table for me. I didn't feel uncomfortable eating there. The food was delicious. I have only one complaint about all the eating places in the area. I think they are all very expensive and it would be expensive to be part of a family group.

First time back here in 20 years and it was great to take my fiancee to show her this place as the last time I was there I was a teenager. We managed to get a table and had the best Haggis starter ever and the cheesecake desert was fabulous as well. 3 Courses each and a bottle of wine for under £60 = Happy days.

I agree wholeheartedly with the damning review by Traveller626. Sutherland Houses's manageress has been doing this too long and now treats her clients with undeserved contempt. We ordered a dish which should have included Tiger prawns and Shrimps, but actually had neither . When challenged this woman claimed that at the point of order both ingredients had simultaneously run out. Why then were we not informed so a different order could be made? No explanation - and, incidentally, at no point any apology! She claimed that instead we had been awarded an extra amount of ordinary prawns, though this was not apparent.Worse followed: when suggested the bill should reflect these failures, she falsified the bill by claiming the original amount had been £16.50. It was not. It had been £15.50. She had therefore reduced the bill on each dish by an insulting 50p. When her error was pointed out a further reduction of £1 was made, still frankly a ludicrously small amount.This is a place to avoid.

As usual for someone with a vegetarian diet the options were very limited. I chose the vegetable stroganoff.the general flavour was ok but the vegetables red pepper onion peas and a few tiny pieces of dried tomatoes were barely cooked and the whole experience was disappointing a few mushrooms in it may have helped.On the plus side my partner said her beef and ale pie was delicious.

went here Tuesday evening had fish and chips which I feel was very overpriced for the portion size was more like for a child. As soon as meal was finished Margaret came over said there is your bill!!! which we felt was very very rude we were going to order a sweet and bottle of wine, but with an attitude like that we just up and left to be honest don't think we fitted in as my husband had biker tshirt on and jeans just felt we were not good enough for her very rude old lady do not recommend this place very very rude old lady!! ps the young waitresses were lovely shame about their boss wont be back. o sorry to have to say this but our money is as good as anbody elses probably harder worked for.

We visited this restaurant on the last night of our stay at Dornoch, it was very busy so fortunately we had booked as people who had not booked were being turned away such was it's popularity. The staff are very wellcoming and the choice and quality of the food is fantastic but not overpriced . We would definetly recomend this restuarant , and will revisit it the next time we are in the area.

We had poor weather for 3 out of 6 days in Dornoch. We tried to have a meal here but it was fully booked so we booked for our third night. It was a real treat with very friendly owner and staff, and the food was excellent

We were staying in Dornoch for weekend and managed to get a table for the Saturday night. From the minute we stepped in the door to the minute we left we had first class service from the owner and all the staff. Our meal was also first class. I don't normally have a sweet and took the fresh fruit and meringue all I can say is OMG delicious. Would def recommend this place and we certainly will be back.

The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The food was perfect. I had pheasant breast wrapped in prosciutto. Yum. Just make sure to get reservations or you will be disappointed if you can't eat here. A very pleasant dinner and evening was had by all. Do not miss this restaurant.

Not sure where to go on our first night in Dornoch but picked this by chance and we were not disappointed. Warm welcome and great food. Excellent!

A quaint restaurant serving good food. The starter portion of muscles was enormous. The ladies waiting on us were really enthusiastic and friendly. Thank you for a pleasant evening.

We booked a table on a Friday night and the restaurant was full when we entered. We were given a nice table and the atmosphere was inviting, traditional in an old drawing room kind of way with panelling and muted green walls and tables well spaced out. The service, without exception was very good and attentive, but not intrusive. White and Rose wine by the glass at £6.50p a time was drinkable but I have had much better house wine.For starters, I opted for the Moules and they were excellent. Unlike many mussels that are swimming in a thin broth, these came with a think cream and onion dressing and they were delicious, probably the best I have had. My wife went for the prawn with avocado salad accompanied by a dressing. She enjoyed it, but the avocado was scarce and in little evidence so it didn't really hit the brief.This was probably as a consequence that the small bits of avocado there were were rock hard, so there was probably a lack of ripe avocados in the kitchen that night, hence its scarcity in the dish.For mains, my wife opted for the pheasant in a bacon and cream sauce and was singing its praises. It did in fact look delicious and the accompanying vegetables were well done. My grilled loin of lamb was nice but a little too fatty. My accompanying vegetables were also very good but I would have preferred a fresh mint sauce with the lamb as it tasted a little synthetic.At the end of the evening, before a gratuity, the total bill arrived at £64 to include two courses, two mains and two glasses of wine each. Very good value indeed for what we ate. Sutherland House looks to be amongst the best options in Dornoch and if we returned, I would happily revisit as the menu was varied, the food of very good quality, the service good and the value on the button.

Lovely restaurant sited in the centre of Dornoch. Quality of food superb. Would heartily recommend it.

We have spent many an evening over a number of years enjoying the food and the service at Sutherland's. Our experience has been uniformly positive. The people are welcoming and professional. The menu is sufficiently varied and well prepared. If one plans an evening in Dornoch, one can book here with confidence that the experience will be a good one. For visitors (as we are, from the U.S.), it should be encouraging to know that there is such a place at the end of the day.
