All too often, great restaurants don’t receive the recognition they deserve. We’re quick to share when a dining experience falls short, but not always as eager to highlight those that quietly excel.
One such place that deserves serious consideration is The George & Dragon in Devizes.
A recent visit had us grateful we made the journey. From the moment we stepped inside, we were welcomed warmly by the owner, instantly feeling at ease. The rustic charm of the decor complemented the inviting atmosphere, setting the tone for the meal ahead.
The menu is well-balanced, catering to meat lovers, fish enthusiasts, and even offering thoughtful vegan options. But our focus was the fish - and it did not disappoint. From starters to mains, every dish was impeccably presented and cooked to perfection. The quality of ingredients shone through, and the attention to detail in both preparation and presentation was evident.
Service was another highlight - attentive, professional when required, yet relaxed and friendly throughout. It was a refreshing experience to dine somewhere that strikes the perfect balance between excellence and approachability.
This was our first visit, but it certainly won’t be our last. For those who appreciate outstanding fresh fish dishes, The George & Dragon is well worth a visit.
We’ll be back for more, and thank you for a fantastic meal.
We stopped in Chippenham on our way south after a day trip and were tempted by the look of this Italian restaurant. We had no booking but were shown to an upper room, which was empty, but soon filled up with other diners. After ten minutes we were able to place our order. Then we waited, and waited some more. Others around us were served, and we still waited, until the waiter came and apologised that our order had been mislaid! We had to place our order again, and now it was 40 minutes since we had arrived. Another 25 minutes we finally got our meals and more apologies from the waiters. The food was average at best and combined with the long wait, we were not entirely happy when we left. They had indicated that we would get a discount, but I only saw that we had not been charged for just one £4.70 side salad. Never mind. We are not often in Cirencester and unlikely to be back.
Despite the fact that it was freezing cold (they had just opened and it was a miserable rainy day in February) it was a great lunch: we had a lunch deal and 6 tapas in total. All delicious but the artichoke was outstanding.
Friendly and attentive staff. Couldn’t ask for more and happy to come back any time.
Wasted trip, overpriced nonsense. Rude staff mediocre food and drinks. Terrible interior and disgusting taste in furniture. Coffee was alright however. 5 drinks was 30 pounds. Never returning.
A great afternoon tea for a family birthday. Fresh, well filled sandwiches. Warm samosa and Pechora snacks. Delicious cakes. Lovely scones with plenty of cream and jam. Delicious tea and plenty of it! Fresh fruit was a welcome way to finish and refresh the taste buds
A great meal.
Welcoming, helpful and attentive staff. Attractive room
Toilets clean and accessible.
Thank you
We will return
This was the best steak and ale pie we have ever had. Packed with tender beef in a rich gravy. A vibrant atmosphere and staff always so welcoming and friendly.
What an AMAZING Christmas Day Meal. The atmosphere, the service….. THE FOOD. A 10 out of 10 from all of us. Everything home cooked, the flavours…. Wow. The portion sizes so generous. I could go on, the rich gravy, the tenderness of the meat, never had a roast dinner in a restaurant that was that good! There were 8 of us on a lovely round table, it felt so homely. There was not one negative from any of us. Same again next year please! SUPERB.
Excellent establishment. Local pub feel but really well maintained with excellent beers on tap and bottled. When I came in they had Deya on tap and lots of Belgian beers in the fridge.
