A chance visit following the brown signs from the motorway. Very welcome agreement from the chef to prepare our food as we arrived at exactly three o’clock. Would highly recommended the spiced pork chop. Beautifully cooked and presented. Thank you.

My second visit this summer. I enjoyed myself. I liked the fact that this is not a foody only pub, but there are locals just having a drink at the bar. That gives the place life and makes it more interesting that listening to bland music to break. The food and service were lovely. The service particularly won me over on both occassions. I will be back.

We returned to this pub after several years absence .We used to be regulars but it went through some tough times and standards fell off a cliff. We had heard that there were new owners and things had looked up.Unfortunately the jury remains out. Firstly the good stuff. Pub looks fresher ,has good outside spice and charming and attentive staff.A couple of decent ales on tap and reasonably priced . Secondly the not so good. The menu looks interesting but the execution from the kitchen was poor.A starter billed as a donut with spinach filling was woefully under seasoned and arrived with raw batter inside. The short ribs was over cooked and dry. Portion size is verging on the mean.A starter of Mussels was enough to feed a small child. So we re sampled and left disappointed.Shame as it’s a lovely spot

The Vine Tree has returned to its wonderful original character. Superb cooking (we had the half lobster) and amazing service. The chef himself brought out our fish soufle which was utterly gorgeous. The wine list lacks for nothing and maintains their reputation for serving wonderful wines. The front of house team were swift, knowledgeable and friendly in short - amazing! A wonderful evening.

What a hidden gem. It’s very much worth the travel down a few windy lanes to get here! We ate very well. Great choices. Has only been re opened 3 weeks and the standard of food choice and flavours were excellent. We had the black pudding scotch egg to start, and the veggie donut. Mains were plaice and burger. Sweets were lemon posset and sticky toffee. Lauren served with excellent care. We sat outside whilst two horse-riders stopped for a drink and we watched the sun set on peaceful surroundings after a sunny day. Do come and keep this lovely dining pub alive and successful.

Having eaten here three times since Freddie and his Team took over on 30 May I have enjoyed lunch, dinner and also Sunday lunch (on different days I might add). It is now finally back in safe hands and I wish the whole Team the best for the future. The Vine Tree has to be a destination for food owing to its rural location which is idyllic - to be able to enjoy the first Sunday lunch of the year Al Fresco in this location was a treat. The place was absolutely packed but service and the quality of the food was superb. Long may this continue!

Positives first - the staff were lovely and the pub atmosphere was good. Had great hopes of a good meal here as it was so good in years gone by. Sadly we were very disappointed. The food was just ordinary, certainly not of the standard the prices indicated. A great shame and we won’t be going back any time soon. Plenty of places with better food at lower prices. Probably a nice spot for a snack and a drink, but don’t bother for an evening meal.

When you do get to eat here we’ve always really enjoyed it. But a disproportionate number of times to our attempts to eat here, it’s been closed. This over three years to be fair and we only come twice or three times a year but invariably when we do, at least once it’s closed. It’s become a bit of a joke to guess whether it will be open or not. Sadly Easter Monday, guess what, it’s closed. But worth it when you get in. It’s a beautiful spot and the food has always been delicious.

We visited the vine tree for dinner, it’s been a very long time since we’ve been but after looking a the menu on line decided to book, on arrival we got a drink at the bar and were shown to our table. To be honest the initial vibes were good , anyway we ordered our food 2 wild mushrooms on soda bread £17.90 and one Ardennes pate £8.99. The soda bread was very poor . Anyway maybe the mains will be better 2 tornados Rossini £63 . What a disappointment certainly not like any tornados rossini we’ve ever had before . The steak was very poor the pate was too and has for having a large crouton it was just chunks that seemed like they came out of a cupasoup. 2 lamb rumps £55.90 which was supposed to be cooked pink. Both grey and over cooked. Also nothing came out to the table together the lamb was 10mins after the steaks , it’s always nice to eat together we find . And the wait between starters and main was nearly 40mins . And now for the dessert 4 cheese cakes £34 . What a disgrace the portion were tiny , and as for the sorbet were not sure what it was total tasteless. This is the worst meal we’ve all had out in a very long time absolutely rubbish . With the drinks 4 thatchers gold 2 passion fruit gins with tonic and one large sav blanc. The bill came to £235. 10 .for a meal that was memorable for all the wrong reasons, The vine tree is nowhere near the pub it was maybe ok for a drink but food is a definite now . If you happen to be in the area I would suggest you try the rattle bones Sherston or the potting shed Crudwell. Or at these prices you might as well go to watley manor, I don’t think the vine tree will survive with the current standard , ☹️

Bank Holiday lunch for four. The menu was extremely limited and as others have mentioned, the food not inspiring and doesn’t bear relation to the web site; we were told afterwards that the evening menu is a la carte. To give an example, one of us had an open fish finger sandwich. The fish fingers had no pretence to be home cooked - not sure if they were even Birds Eye! That’s OK for a cheap cafe but not for a ‘dining pub’ at c. £15. The new owners have done a good job upgrading inside but this lunch was a poor experience. It would be good to see a response from management on Tripadvisor to those not satisfied. And perhaps less first time reviewers with effusive 5 stars, or am I being over cynical?

A group of us dined at The Vine Tree last weekend after hearing mixed reviews, albeit mainly positive! We like to think of ourselves as Cotswold foodies, ergo we decided to give it a try. Referring to the former we most certainly were not disappointed….in fact may I say on behalf of the group the food was OUTSTANDING, from perfectly cooked tender lamb rump to well executed Seabass with crispy salted skin. Too much to list but the rest follow suit! It was just brilliant. To summarise, Great value, incredible food and very welcoming and humble service. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED L.

You could not imagine a worse meal in a pub restaurant. There were clearly no trained cooks chefs or even kitchen staff. I wonder what has happened to The Vine Tree? Our main courses of sea bass and salmon were virtually inedible. The sea bass was a thin dried cardboard of once a fish, the salmon was similarly overcooked and dried out. The vegetables for both were the same - unclear what they were, prickly like dried stems, dark leaves and very difficult to chew. Couldn’t have been concocted by a professional cook. Possibly the worse pub meal we have ever been served - and we have had a few! And no toilet tissue in any of the ladies loos!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Having eaten at the Vine Tree a couple of time since the relaunch and been happy with the standard of meals I decided to take some visiting friends for lunch "as a treat" after informing them of how good it was. Something should have set off warning bells when it was so easy to book a table. The menu bore no resemblance to the one online and was "cheap and cheerful style" burger, lasagne, fish finger sandwich, fish & chips, sausage and mash. Forget home made venison pie, or indeed anything of that quality. The Fish & Chips was mass produced freezer fare, skinny French Fries, unseasoned peas and fish, even the tartar sauce was a strange consistency, oh and no vinegar to try and add any flavour, it "hadn't arrived" apparently... The mash had lumps of new potato, the soft drinks were watery. We sat in polite discomfort at our disappointing meal, I was mortified particularly as my friends tried to put on a brave face. We didn't even attempt dessert, fearing another underwhelming offering (I think was Cheesecake and Sticky Toffee Pudding). This standard of cheap and cheerful pub grub is great if advertised and priced accordingly (Wetherspoons F&C is £6:85, and that includes a soft drink) but this was the usual price (£17:95?) which is for the "Mighty Monk Ale Battered Line-Caught Cod, Crushed Petit Pois, Tartar Sauce, Beef Dripping Triple Cooked Chips" advertised online would be fine, but this wasn't close. One friend left most of her meal but this was removed without query. The blurb states "scrumptious, innovative food with frequently changing menus – the seasonal menus feature sustainable fresh produce delivered on a daily basis, including fish and seafood"... Sorry that's just so far from our experience it's laughable. Maybe it's a temporary problem but if there isn't anyone available who can cook then cancel food service or at least reflect the downgrade of quality in the prices and own up to the change. The room was cold, we felt unimportant as customers and it is definitely not an experience I would like to repeat. Oh the coffees were OK.

Went for Sunday lunch with my wife. They seemed surprised to see us (we had booked). Sat for 5 minutes before anybody asked us if we would like a drink. Not very warm. No wine list on table, so further delay. It was 2pm, no beef left. Fair enough, we ordered lamb rump. One and a half slices of lamb about 2 inches square is not lamb rump. Perhaps 2 ounces. We were asked for feedback after being served and mentioned the poor portions, but nothing back from our server. Unfortunately, now off our list of local eateries. Very poor from what it used to be.

Two of us had booked a mid-week lunch at my long-term favourite Gastropub pub, the first time my friend had been out to eat for 15 months, having had Long Covid. Despite the dismal weather, it couldn’t have been a better ‘First Lunch’ for her! We spent 3.5 hours chatting over a relaxed, simply delicious meal. The Vine Tree’s excellent young chef, George, and his team ensured we were spoilt for choice, with an additional Specials Menu too. Between us we chose: a Twice Baked Abroarth Smokie Cheese Soufflé to die for; the best I’d ever eaten (and I’ve eaten many!!); and Calamari with a light Aioli for starters. We were torn over what to choose for our mains, but went with the Seafood Fish Pie; maybe not everyone’s expectation of a fish pie, but my friend declared it the best, with a light ‘liquor’, more like that of ‘moules mariniere’, with a layer of thinly sliced potatoes, elegantly topped with micro-herbs. Meanwhile, I indulged myself with the succulent Triple Wagyu Burger, with bacon (extra) served with the crispiest skinny fries. We couldn’t resist sharing the wobbliest Vanilla Pannacottq, served with tart berries. We’ll have to return to try their unctuous Bread & Butter Pudding, as our excellent waiter was able to describe the method used to make it, as he sometimes helps his chef friend in the kitchen. Our only regret was that we didn’t ask his name as he has the most detailed knowledge of all food on both menus, far beyond that usually offered. Well Done, Vine Tree; we will be back very soon, hopefully, on a sunny day, so we can eat on your extensive terrace, while our grandchildren play on the grass!

We called in just after lockdown ended and allowed outside eating only, so were in the marquee at the back of the pub. Unfortunately the weather was dismal and we were the only people actually in the place because nobody else was daft enough to come out in that weather.I was really worried that although they have a really great and varied menu that because it was deserted we would not get a good meal.... well I was totally wrong.Arbroath smoky soufflé was amazing and the squid was great also.My partner is not a fan of what she would class as "fancy food" which definitely put her at a disadvantage as this was definitely a foodie menu.We mentioned to James the manger the she wanted something a bit plainer and he had no qualms in simply saying tell us what you want and if we have the ingredients we will cook it! It turns out she just fancied a cheese sandwich which they happily made without a hint of an issue even though not on a menu. The pub is in a bit of an awkward spot and getting good staff can't be easy, but James is a star and fingers crossed this place goes from strength to strength after the world gets back to normality.

I’ve been going to this pub off and on for 25 years, but lately it has changed hands. And what a pair of hands it is in....Richard, the landlord, is old school. Nothing is too much trouble. I’ve ordered the wrong beer..no problem I’ll get you another. I haven’t booked a table....no problem, we’ll squeeze you in.It’s such a rarity to find a gastro pub these days that’s so keen to please, but please it does. The food is off the scale; I understand that they have kept the same chef.I’ve been bemused by some of the criticism on here by a few of the posters and I can only conclude that they are looking for something other than a country pub because this delivers on every level as a country dwelling.Lastly, the landlord’s staff are a dream, in particular a chap called James who works there. His energy and enthusiasm never ceases to amaze. He is on the money...This pub is on another level.

As we enjoyed our The Vine Tree visit in December before the lockdown, we decided to go back now the rules say we can dine outside. It has a lovely garden in the countryside, with spaced out tables on the lawn or there are more under a canopy.Bit of a wait for food, but was worth it. The waiter was available often and helpful. Everything tasted fresh or home made.My partner had the mackerel which was moist with a flavoursome jus. My rump steak was tender. They even made me up some pepper steak sauce specially, which wasn't on the menu. Funny how something as simple as a chip can be made badly in many places, but the the skinny fries with my steak were nice and crispy. I could tell the ice cream was home made, as it was lovely. Another plus was that they were open from lunch, all afternoon, until the evening.

I know you shouldn't carp at the hospitality industry in current circumstances, but we were so looking forward to breaking our lockdown at the Vine Tree. It has a lovely terrace, and we'd been there before when it was buzzing, with nice heaters and excellent service and fairly good pub-food.Our post lockdown visit was dismal. The heaters had vanished (the staff were puzzled about where they had gone) and there were just 2 staff for a busy terrace, who not only had to serve but also to pull the drinks and wash glasses. We were 10 minutes waiting to be seated, another 10 minutes for menus, our first drinks arrived 40 minutes after we arrived. Food more than an hour after arrival. It was freezing cold, part of our order was forgotten, and the fish pie was terrible (not a pie at all, a sort of fish and new potato soup). If we had not been so intent on having a meal out post lockdown we would have walked out. You make allowances but this was a terrible evening, completely marring the sense of goodwill and happiness that we arrived with. The only saving grace was that the two beleaguered over-worked and also freezing-cold waiters were delightful. We want to help businesses like the Vine Tree post lockdown, but they had weeks to prepare to welcome their guests back properly and they really mucked it up. Please try harder.

No volveremos a visitarnos.

I had the rump of lamb with dauphinois which was beautifully presented. And tasty. I’ve got a hearty appetite and found the two lamb pieces to be rather small. My wife had the rump and said it was excellent. The barman was very friendly and helpful.

I came to The Vine Tree after hearing amazing things and was not disappointed! My family and I have been searching everywhere for a welcoming traditional English pub with good food AND atmosphere and it ticked both boxes. In short:Food - can’t fault, every course was great and the presentation was fab Price - reasonable for the amount of food and quality Atmosphere- lovely wood fire and a homely country feel with dogs welcome too! Only thing I would have changed was the weather as the outside area looks great, can’t wait to come back when the sun reappears to try it out. Thank you The Vine Tree :)

We visited the Vine Tree based on the excellent reviews that were published on TripAdvisor website. So, as we only live near by in Hullavington, and it was a lovely sunny evening, we (myself and my wife) thought we would try the popular Vine Tree pub/restaurant, for an outside meal and a drink. We both ordered the fillet steak at a princely price of £30 each! This did not include chips! But it did include some sort of cooked potato! Which was late coming out and so we were sat there with a cold overcooked fillet steak and some soggy salad!! Eventually, when the potato thingys came out there was no apology from the chef, who just stood there chatting with another staff member. Moreover, it felt like we inconvenienced him and he just served us with a slice of burnt attitude!! We have not been back since and we do not intend to return anytime soon!!

We recently held a lunch here for 10 friends, having always enjoyed excellent meals and hospitality here for many years. So our high expectations were already well established. However in this case the meal (we preordered a large rib of roast beef with all the trimmings) was truly exceptional. Everything from the initial greeting to the attentive service and choice of wines made this the memorable occasion we hoped for (and worthy of comment)Wonderful to see the owners maintaining such consistently high standards over such a long period; their passion for hospitality and quality shines through

£24 for 2 courses or £29 for 3 courses off Christmas menu. For a restaurant, that might be worth it, but sorry, this is too expensive for a pub. While it is cosy and the food was tasty, small portions, having the owner's dogs walking underneath the table, and fairly dour service left me wishing I had suggested somewhere else to the party, after it had been recommended to me for years. There are far more pleasant and generous pubs out there that will give you much better value for money and deserve your custom more.

We had a lovely lunch in the garden here - delicious food and we were particularly grateful to the kitchen for preparing something "off menu" for our fussy youngest child. Best of all, though, was the fact that when we left a pair of specs behind, the lovely waitress posted them back to us on the same day so we were only without them for less than 24 hours. Hugely grateful and we'll be back.

We had dinner as a family on Saturday 13 April. Only one waitress and one young chap was insufficient for the number of guests so we ended up ordering own drinks from the bar. Mid meal, acrid cooking smells came from the kitchen across the whole restaurant. Guests were opening windows and doors and leaving to get some fresh air. Meanwhile the owner stood happily by the bar, seemingly oblivious, chatting away. No apology, no recognition that we, and other tables, left early. Clothes stank of food smells. Food itself was fine but it is was the "couldn't care less" attitude that was so distasteful. We have been coming for 15 years to this pub. This was our last visit and, judging by the other three tables in the bar area, their last visit too.

We were taken to this pub by friends who had recommended it to us. There is a large choice on the menus so there is something for everyone. Between us we had mussels, cheese souffle and devilled kidneys for starters, followed by sea bream, fish pie and belly pork. All very good except for the fish pie which had little fish in it and was overcooked. Friendly staff and nice old stone building, so plenty of character. It is also dog friendly, so we will take our two hounds next time we visit. We will definitely be back!

I don’t understand how it’s so hard to have a decent fish & chips. They don’t even use real chips. Considering they bang on about using the freshest food I was annoyed by broken french fries and dry fish. I’ve had my fair share of mediocre food in my time, and usually I wouldn’t be inclined to take to this platform to express how I feel, but the bad experience was compounded by a large woman (who I assume is connected to a member of staff in the pub) wandered around talking at the most ridiculous volume, taking up the time of our server who because of this woman barely took any notice of our bland meal. We didn’t bother with dessert. A good day out was spoilt by poor service and sub-standard food quality.

I came with a mate here for a gorgeous cooked lunch! We had a few glasses of wine and a couple of g&ts; which had such a huge range! We ordered and didn’t have to wait too long for our food to arrive despite a fairly full restaurant along with what seemed like a work xmas party too. Our waiter was patrolling around the restaurant so he was able to keep an eye on all of his tables and we truly felt like we were being looked after. Food was fairly pricey but we were expecting that however there was such a large range of choice! Thanks for the experience and will be visiting again!

We've been here numerous times. The last visit was a midweek family trip for an early dinner. The bar was stacked with a raucous group of sweary men. Should young children should be in a pub early evening? In this instance, no. It is not suited for families with young children. In terms of food, we had fish and chips; greasy, and likely prepared by someone who wasn't the main chef.

Website showed great promise. Kerbside appeal good, car parking good, service very good ( very helpful and friendly). Strange layout inside as its old building, dining room has no bar. Garden not used to its full potential, only very old tired play equipment for children. Food reasonable, 2 out of 3 meals okay. Third meal of chicken disappointing, either poor quality meat or overcooked or possibly both !!!!! Empty on a nice sunny lunchtime !!! Sorry but would not rush back.

We opted for the full Sunday lunch and I have to say, it was probably THE best Sunday lunch I have ever eaten out. The gravy was absolutely delicious, vegetables cooked perfectly and the beef was pink with no fat in sight, every bit edible. Would recommend and we would probably make a special trip just to come back for the superb Sunday lunch.

Won’t be back - coffee ok but woeful miserable staff. A smile, a bit of engagement, even eye contact makes a difference - you want to feel welcome rather than an intruder. Surely when money is tight places realise they might have to go that bit extra to encourage people to go back.
