In September, a good friend, board member and resident of Somerset, took us on a three day tour of her “home area.” We visited Wells, primarily to see the great Cathedral there, but after that visit to the Cathedral, and surrounding sites, I declared “wine thirty,” so we headed to the pub in The Crown at Wells.
First, The Crown at Wells is an inn, then next, a restaurant, and finally a pub/bar. It was in the latter, that we took a table. The wine list was short, and we got the Chablis, while our “tour guide” had coffee.
The restaurant and pub/bar seem to be separated, and not just in the sitting areas. I approached the bar, to order the wine and the coffee, and was directed to the “other room.” Once around the corner, in the adjoining room, I walked up to that bar (same bar, but on the other side), and the same gentleman could now serve me. The bar area had two “windows,” and apparently one was for the restaurant side of the operation, and the other for the pub. This was rather odd to me, but I had a good laugh over it. Perhaps the bartender had a good laugh at me, going from side to side of that bar area? Also, I had to be certain to pay, on the correct side. All very confusing for this “Yank.”
All service was friendly, and though the Chablis was served much too cold, we had an enjoyable hour, sipping wine and coffee, and recounting our busy day, and especially Wells Cathedral and its grounds. A comfortable pub for a bit of a pause, and some wine.
If we had not had reservations to dine elsewhere, the menu looked interesting, and so long as I found the right side of the bar to order from, would probably have been very good.
Neat, historic inn/pub, and worth our stopping in – just get instructions on which side of the bar to order from.
My daughter had her 8th birthday party this morning and it was brilliant!! Paul and Lucy were amazing with 10 children and they were so happy when they left. The kids made their own smoothie or milkshake, decorated a waffle pop, ate pizza , fruit sticks and took birthday cake home. Paul is the best host and he played pass the parcel for the first time. Thank you for making it the best party for the kids and the parents. Brilliant!
We went for lunch, carvery was absolutely beautiful, great choice of vegetables. The staff very friendly. Great atmosphere . Definitely recommend this place
Wow! I come from NY and this is the closest I've ever had to NY pizza in the UK. I would highly recommend anyone looking for some fabulous pizza to come for a meal. It's truly delicious and our amazing server was so kind. She was attentive and very sweet. We enjoyed it so very much.
Was really excited to try out this restaurant. Had read the media coverage and have tremendous respect for the owners. It was busy, nice weather had brought the crowds out to the outside dining area.
It seems impossible to get good service these days, when you do it is rare. Has eveyone good left the industry post covid... There were plenty of staff on the floor, but systems and training were clearly lacking, and the basic good standards sadly lacking. As soon as we walked in lack of a clear greeting was a sign of what was to come.
We ended up waiting far too long for our mains to arrive. Other tables also complaining and warning us about the lack of service.
The place itself is beautifully & tastefully done. The menu reads incredibly well.
The food did not disappoint. I sat eating the Fish Soup, trying to recall a better soup that I had ever eaten. This, I have to say was the best, absolutely incredible. The rest of the dishes were well cooked, and good, but nothing knock out.
Rarely give reviews, but the lack of service was a big issue. One guy seemed to be more senior, but he was way out of his depth. Not even a goodbye as we left despite making eye contact with the Manager and floor staff!
Would not recommend until the service is sorted out.
There have been significant prices increases at Sunrise in Shepton Mallet over the past 4 months with two significant price increases since October, as an example a bag of Prawn Crackers cost £2.50 in October, which increased to £3.00 in November and today cost £3.50. Our overall bill tonight was 22% higher than in October 24. Sorry Sunrise, but this is not justifiable and significantly exceeds inflation.
Ordered a takeaway, special rice bland and tasteless, vegetable korma tasteless watery and bland, aloo gobi tastless and bland, chips thin fries soggy and horrible.only thing was palatable was the naan bread. Most of the .eal ended up in the bin ,total waste of money.
Took a long time to receive our meals after the awkward start trying to work out if someone would come take our order or if we needed to go to the bar. Cheese was burnt on the salad and tasted like charcoal but rest of the meal was nice
