I can only recommend 'The Dusthole'. We were very impressed by the owner's helpful and friendly manner as well as the 'charming' rooms. The atmosphere is very familiar, typically 'English', the room is very clean and the beds are extremely comfortable. I would definitely book here again! Thank you very much for the great time!!

We wanted to get drinks here while on holiday nearby, but when we turned up it was closed. Some men outside said it had been closed for 3 years which is very confusing as there are more recent reviews?? We also rang up to ask and were met with a very strange response. I think something weird is going on here… are they open or not ??

We loved this hotel. It was so cosy and, without doubt, the most characterful hotel we've ever stayed in; comfy bed, old squishy sofas and armchairs, a warren like interior full of the lingering smells of an old, old building and open winter fires. The host was lovely and his breakfast was tasty and quick to arrive. When we handed in our key, we were dismayed to learn that we were playing an unwilling role in the history of the inn as the last ever guests to check out. The current financial climate in the leisure industry has forced the owner to make the decision to close. So sad for him. What a loss to the town...

Staggered by the positive reviews. The welcome was derisory - Tony the owner wiped his nose with his hand telling us he was too tired and drunk to cook. There were dog faeces in the courtyard left by his aggressive hound and he knew we had a small child with us. Food was disgusting, his hound was in the kitchen “helping clear up” as Tony the owner stated. HSO would close this dust bowl immediately. Having run a 5 star hygiene rated venue, I would recommend avoiding. Just foul.

There's a story at the Dusthole, which is a more than you can say for most hotels these days - its warm, convivial, vintage, and quite unique. Its the sort of place that everybody in the bar gets involved in the conversation. The proprietor works his socks off, he's involved in everything including the cooking, so maybe its OK that things take a little longer. The place is a little saggy at the seams, but that adds charm - the beds are clean, the decor is 80's chic, and the rooms are warm and cosy. If you're looking for "Premier Inn" uniformity, the Dusthole probably isn't for you. But if you're looking for a memorable experience, I'd recommend it

We had a very comfortable weekend at the Dusthole. Anthony, the owner, is an excellent chef and provided us with delicious meals in the evening and a substantial breakfast in the mornings. My partner viewed the photos of the rooms and proceeded to book a room, with a prospect of having what he saw! He was very excited in telling me about a four poster bed, with a deluxe en-suite. To my disappointment there was not a four poster bed in sight but a wicker framed headboard which was attached to a rock hard bed! The bathroom needed up dating also the decor and furniture. There was no romance for him!! The bedding and bathroom was clean which was the important thing, nothing worse than finding someone else’s hair in your bed!! There was no menu, only what the owner offered us. I explained that I was a vegetarian. He advised me that he made a batch of vegetable pies in the freezer. These would be cooked with veg and roast potatoes. He assured me that the pies were homemade! I think this man makes vegetable pies for Aldi’s! It tasted and looked exactly the same as the one I had the week before at home. When we checked out the next day, we were presented with the bill for the meal. To my utter shock I was charged £16.95 for the pie that suspiciously tasted like the pie from Aldi’s that costed £1.45 Apart from that I adored the dog called Tyson!!

We had a meal on the first night and it was beautiful. I had the rib eye and it was superb and my partner had the sea bass and she loved it. We stopped in the “honeymoon suite” lovely comfortable bed and well presented. Please remember it’s a 16th century inn so don’t expect the savoy. But we loved everything about it. My husband and I stayed here for a short trip as visiting another area. We arrived to the dog! Which didn’t bother us but there are dog hairs everywhere it’s an Akita. The whole place unfortunately needs a good wash down and polish it’s full of dust. The room itself was dusty, but I have to say the bed was clean as was the sink and bath. Shower was ok, the windows you can hardy see out of to be fair. If you’re a light sleeper you’ll be in trouble because you can hear everything outside, not double glaze. We had one evening meal and one breakfast. All food is mostly deep fried or ours was because we had scampi and chips. Breakfast was a greasy spoon as my husband called it. Tony himself is pleasant enough, he’s a smoker so there are ashtrays everywhere. Other than than would we return, maybe not It’s a same because this place could be so much more.

Booked a short break direct with the owner of The Dusthole, Tony. Stayed in room 1 the four poster bedroom. Bed very comfortable, lovely white cotton bed linen, fluffy white towels in the en-suite plus toiletries. We had an evening meal , (Tony is the chef /Barman/Owner!) Belly Pork was so tender, Lamb Shank was also melt in the mouth tender, portions were large, Vegs all fresh, definitely the meal of our short staycation. Prices very reasonable, added bonus was the courtyard area to enjoy the drinks! The Dust Hole dates from around 1600’s so the building is very atmospheric, also has a skyline view of Shepton Mallet Prison. Setting is very quiet, just ideal . Breakfast kept us going for most of the day, cereals, hot choices, fruit, tea, coffee, juice, toast, spreads. So good! Tony is a wonderful host, nothing too much trouble, we just love this Inn!

Cannot fault the dusthole. Has so much history and charm should be listed as a national treasure. Tony is a top notch chef and host and we spent many hours over our five night visit chatting while the fire roared. Our room was superb and very comfortable and clean. The building has so much to see and look at you don't need to go anywhere else, but should you want to, it's very well situated between Wells, Glastonbury and Bath, and also it's very own Shepton Mallet gaol to visit. Stayed in a cabin which seemed more like a garden shed. Big bed and clean but the ensuite is not very private due to a huge gap between ceiling and partition wall. Also blinds at the doors were not adequate and if you had the lights on anybody in the garden can see in. Big dog roaming around the gardens. Had dinner in the evening, big portions but not cooked well. Chips were mainly inedible as lots of black bad bits inside. One of the most surreal visits ever. We called in early evening for a drink and something to eat but were met by the rude, dirty looking landlord who proceeded to lecture at us for about 10 mins. The whole place was completely empty apart from a couple who were (unlucky) residents of the hotel. We were told that as the owner was on his own it was 'residents only'. He didn't have any staff and was cooking food, serving drinks and washing up himself. This was because he had not scheduled any staff as he didn't know if anyone would require food that evening and wasn't willing to pay them if it was quiet! He told us that the residents of the town had deserted the pub as he has very strict rules about swearing and drinking that wasn't acceptable to them ( I interpreted this as 'they all think I am rude'). He also said that many of the restaurants in Shepton Mallet were rubbish (not the case as we later found a lovely Italian) and the local B&B; owners should inform him if any of their guests were going to call into the Dusthole ever, even for a drink! It was clear that this man didn't want any customers in his pub or his hotel. The surroundings were run down, unkempt and dirty. Such a shame as the pub looks so quaint from the outside. Save yourself a trip - if you call in here you will not be welcome, you will be an inconvenience. Avoid at all costs.

However we were told that we had 2 double rooms way apart from each other, which was blamed on bookings.com and I after highlighting to properitor that i would never had done that as we have a 6 year realised that we needed to sort this problem. This resulted in the proprietor putting in a camp bed into the smallest double room I have ever seen. This was after a racist and hugely inappropriate joke made by the proprietor!! The room was small and grubby despite the hotel being quirky and quaint the rooms needed old tat taken out and totally refreshed. Breakfast was fine, but no acknowledgment by proprietor unless we did. The hotel does not serve lunches on a saturday which for a fully booked hotel for a wedding could of been great. A total shame as the hotel serves great cider and ales but the on-site dog does not like people and growls at guests, and the dog poo left on the grass outside cabins was not even cleared!!!! Shame.

Me and my partner recently visited this pub and had some 'food'. The bar person was very pleasant but that's where the good points ended... the place was empty and the manager or owner didn't even say hello to us. The food we ordered was also really awful. I ordered the curry (which I thought was a pretty simple choice) and found that the rice most likely came out of a microwave packet as it had no taste and was clumpy and stuck together (and no, it wasn't thai rice) the curry wasn't much better. My partner had the chicken wrapped in bacon... the bacon was streaky but wasn't cooked enough so all he got was a mouthful of chewy fat. He basically just had to scrap the bacon off and attempt the dried up chicken breast inside. This 'meal' came with what was called 'creamed spinach' which both smelt and tasted disgusting and was rather dry to be creamed. All in all we didn't finish our meals and were in and out in under 45 minutes! I definately would not recommend this place to anyone!

My husbands family booked to have a Sunday meal here as a get together and chat about his father who had recently passed away . The Dust hole is a good go between for us all , so we decided to meet here. We walked into the bar and ordered drinks from a woman who seemed disinterested, rude and was having some kind of argument with the owner. There were nine of us and every time we ordered a drink she would say next, next , next...... which was irritating and again rude. Our table was right by the carvery queue and everyone lining up for food were right next to us, which was off putting. We moved to a quieter spot to have our puddings and a chat and asked the barmaid if this was ok. She said "yes, but it's another table to clean", charming !! The toilets did smell of wet dog and the cubicles were dusty. However the only good point was that the carvery was good, it was a shame about the rude staff { and they weren't rushed off their feet] We will never be wasting our money here again and I think they should be mindful to the reasons why customers might meet here.

Stayed at The Dusthole for the night. Excellent, cannot fault it. Very Olde Worlde but that is nice to see in this day and age of gastro pubs. Staff were very welcoming and food was excellent. Carnival itself was brilliant then rounded off the evening in a hostelry called The Bell. Lovely pint with music to boot. Danced the night away till 1am. Well recommended.

We booked a Christmas Lunch for the men of Shepton Mallet Bowls Club. Even though Tony, the landlord, didn't normally serve a lunch during the week he was kind enough to put one on for the club.

Called in to eat as it was close to where we were staying. Food was OK but the staff member who served us both at the bar and at table gave the impression that it was all a bit of an inconvenience.

Stayed midweek 1 night in one of the cabins outside, different style of accommodation - it had a super king bed and was quite spacious throughout.

Booked this room last weekend for a night away, the photos looked great and the cost seemed very reasonable for the price arrived and were shown to a dowdy room, nothing like the photos, the room has bubbled paint and when I went in the bathroom, the sink had a huge crack in it and trust me there were no wonderful showers or baths, there wasn't even a proper cubicle, it was a curtain pulled across a shower base, the bedroom was dull and horrible, certainly not like any of the rooms shown on the website, the owner had shown us to our room and said that if we wanted milk to ask his staff, he didn't offer to get us any his own, bearing in mind he was the only person there. I went downstairs to ask if he had another room as this certainly wasn't what I was expecting the floor also sloped very badly ad my husband has a bad leg and back so it makes him fall over, I was told no there were no other rooms and that it was a busy weekend and there were no rooms anywhere for about 50 miles, I said that I was very unhappy but as we had already paid we had no choice, he said he would give us a refund if we didn't want to stay and because the room was so awful, we decided to go home, when we left the owner said he would arrange our refund through expedia as it was very easy, we heard nothing , we emailed hotels.com who we booked the room through and have been told we can't have a refund, I have emailed the dusthole, 3 times now directly and they haven't even answered me. I am totally disgusted that no one has bothered to answer, it was an awful experience and I am hoping that the owner will read this and do the right thing, Do not trust this man, he doesn't keep his word

I booked a room here at the beginning of the year as did my Daughter and Grand Daughter so we could all attend a wedding in Shepton Mallet. They phoned me up to say there was a plumbing problem in my room and they could not put me up. They offered me a room another 30 minutes drive away in street. This was totally the opposite way. After a lot of stress and tears and phonecalls Booking.com got permission for me to stay in a nearby Hotel for £95...I had a refund for the extra. Heard bad remarks about The Dusthole. Landlord wise! I was very upset and furious at their behaviour.

Went to lunch recommended by friends. I did not know that they did a Sunday Carvery. I have not been down to this pub for some years but it still has that old world charm and a lovely atmosphere. As with any other pub carvery there is a choice of meats and a good variety of vegetables and is around £10. Everything tasted good and the meat was tender. The puddings were excellent around £4.00 each but were a good portion size.
