The Market House Inn in Mendip

After reading some of these reviews I was worried that I had made a mistake booking here. However, I was pleasantly surprised! The lady behind the bar was lovely, very smiley and welcoming. The food was really good and speedy service. I wouldn’t hesitate to eat here again.

Ahead of the carnival we booked a table for 4 a month in advance , booking accepted. 3 weeks later and a week before the booking email recto advise booking cancelled with no explanation. Emailed asking for booking to be re instated and advised that they are too busy because there’s a carnival on !! Shocking service from such a local establishment

Strange! I’ve enough but never been in a pub with no ale? Loads of lagers and ciders but no ale! Very strange but nice environment.

I was happy with the food however very dissapointed by the noise level of the customers but happy to say I wont be on bussiness in this area again so no need to visit again

We stayed for 1 night , the room was lovely. The bathroom wasn't ensuite, as it was the last one available, but it was just next door, and exclusively ours so wasn't a problem. We ate in the restaurant, and it was great. Breakfast was superb. We would happily stay there again

Didn't try food or drinks, it was quite late when we arrived, but menu looks very good, prices are regular. We stayed in one of the rooms above the pub, it was nice to hear the live music and it was not too loud. Very clean and comfy, with a view of the Tor.

The mash potato was smash - (powdered potato with water), the pie was dry with a small amount of gravy..not enough to moisten the dryness of the pie that tasted microwaved. It was like eating paper. Next time I will only stop for a drink as the food is not worth the charge. Shame since this pub used to be heaving and served delicious food until it was taken over.

The only problem we had and others staying here was unfortunately the quality of the toilet paper they supplied, it was terrible and we all believed it was a matter that the pub to think about upgrading in the rooms and in the pub.

Grab a couple of beers and chili & cheese nuggets. It was a quick stop but expected more from the food.

I love to stay at the rooms. Great views. Great staff.

Two meals ordered, Two people at the table, The waitress brought the meals out and announced who is the gammon for? I replied that's for me please. And the Chicken Nuggets? Well who else can you see at the table? my wife replied. Thick or what?

Been trying to speak to a human at this establishment for 3 weeks .Absolutely no customer service - if someone answers they transfer me straight to an answer machine

One of the worst meals we have ever had! If I could give it zero I would! The jacket potato was a soggy microwaved pathetic excuse for a jacket with "bbq chicken" on top which consisted of about 90% spring onion. My toasted bbq chicken baguette was both burnt black withother parts still cold at the same time which is a skill in itself! The chicken was the driest freezer chicken I've ever had. The kids meals, chicken chips and peas, were cheap rubbish from the freezer, the chips were cold and stale. It came with desserts as part of the meal when I went up to ask for the desserts I was told the kitchen was shut and I'd have to wait for it to open back up again before I could ask for them. Avoid this place at all costs. The WORST pub food I've ever experienced.

A large pub which is a good place for a drink or a budget hot meal if you're in Glastonbury. I had a good Chicken Katsu Curry and half a pint of Thatchers Haze here after walking up and down Glastonbury Tor.

Great food easy ordering and friendly staff.

We both had the burgers and paid the extra £1 to upgrade our drink to a cider and a beer ,the beer garden was very nice and it had plenty of dog bowls 🥣 for our dog to have a drink ,so 2 burgers with chips and 2 pints came to around £20 it was very much like a wetherspoons feel. Burgers were good and tasty .

After being turned away by several restaurants that evening, as they stated, they were "booked" we found this place which warmly greeted us to dine with them. I thoroughly enjoyed the Cheesy Bacon burger. Best burger I'd had all five weeks on holiday in England. Great bear garden and mixed drinks abound. Would absolutely eat here again!

Stayed at The Market House to visit Glastonbury. The owner was very welcoming. The room was clean and tidy and the bed was very comfortable.

Great pub in Glastonbury Town. I sort of stumbled in on my way home from working at the festival externally for 2 weeks. Had a fantastic all day breakfast & couple of pints of Guinness. Friendly staff, lovely friendly local atmosphere; I'd definitely return when in the area again. A nice German man said I had a lovely singing voice as he passed me, quietly singing in the corner charging my phone.

We were here with a german group. We did not eat anything, but we really enjoyed the pub! The beer was good heheh... The staff was really friendly and it was going quick, which we liked. I hope, i come here again, then i will try the food - as there are really cheap prices, like i have seen on the menu! A HUGE plus: They only took cash! Only cash is real money.

Lovely staff. Clean. Unpretentious. Handy location. I ordered a vegi brekky. It was a bit smallish and sufficed, but could be a tad better. Chewy vegi sausages and I personally dislike tomatoes done this way. Toast was nice and hash brown, egg was lovely and beans a bit small for a portion but warm. Just a midday meal that filled me up I suppose. 😊 Toilets a bit cramped but clean.

If i could give zero I would - firstly cash only as no internet, secondly food was shockingly poor, price very reasonable though but it was awful quality and lots of food missing from the menu, thirdly we ordered some children’s meals which came with dessert included we weren’t asked at the time to order dessert ( most places you have it after your meal anyway) went to order after the mains and was told no you must order at the time ! Ok we weren’t asked that? The answer was oh well not everyone wants one so we don’t ask. I mean it’s a a scoop of icecream, but nope we would have to pay the kids meal again if we wanted the ( included ) dessert, avoid at all costs they don’t deserve your business.

A really nice pub with lovely staff and people food was delicious and made as we asked! Will definitely come back when we are next in Glastonbury

Picture shows the Bombay Chicken Skewers. Astute readers will note the lack of 'skewer', the bed of plain dry lettuce & the lack of 'Bombay' flavor. The other dishes were at the same quality. Do yourself a favor, stop here for a drink only cause the food is rank.

Ordered 2 meals only received one,the one we did get had chips on from another customers leftovers as they had mushy peas coated on them, could never recommend eating here, McDonald's much better choice

3 of us went in for lunch, had toasties but they were pretty hard and didn't taste of much. It was really quiet so I'm surprised the bar people forgot one of the drinks, we had to go up and ask for it.

Friendly and efficient staff. Clean and plenty of room between tables. Dog friendly too. Food was really good: tasty, generous sized portions and reasonably priced. So good we returned the next day. Recommended chef writes a cook book.

For we would stop for some lunch while in Glastonbury and this look a nice place I ordered at the table drinks came very quick and the food not to long after very good portion size for the prize we both had the double bacon burgers and chips for £8.99 each they came hot and they was very tasty too no complaints from me or my daughter well worth the money and filled us up for the day ahead

Woman working behind the bar with blonde hair is extremely rude and unwelcoming. The food came out dry, overcooked and cold, don’t go here! It’s not worth it.

Cosmo Smallpiece delivered 2 short measured pints, with attitude. They were San Miguel's and quite foul. Looks like a great place for a fight, the unkempt staff will duly oblige. Busy effing and jeffing about customers that were not there. Filthy attitudes from individuals going behind the bar to get even more free food and drink and the young "lady" (even more "staff") hanging around by the Gents Bog. Tables neither cleared nor cleaned. I suppose if no one comes in they just duff themselves up?

Visited whilst in Glastonbury and had dinner before driving home. Plenty of room and ordered at the bar. The food was quick and tasted great, at a very good price. The bar staff were friendly and quite fun to chat too.

If I could rate this place lower I would! The staff is incompetent…could barley figure out how to check you into the room! Their service was terrible…food took forever to come and when they served it they were totally oblivious to your needs! Horrible!

Terrible . Waited in queue ages to order, not even very big queue. Only to be told by extremely rude bar staff that card machine wasn’t working. No apologies, looked like she couldn’t be bothered. Was incredibly rude to the customer in from of us. At this point we left after being there ages.

Really great place to visit, great staff clean tidy great food , good prices . HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Called in for breakfast while sightseeing Glastonbury, wasn't very busy at all, was super clean and well staffed. The full English breakfast was lovely even if it was abit expensive for what you got but then again I am a tight yorkshireman 😅😅 But saying that would definitely go again

Waited an hour for a chicken club sub and I didn’t get my mash 😔

Ordered smothered steak. On arrival at my table it was 5oz & not smothered. Queried it but was told that was what I'd ordered. Well I know it wasn't. The food arrived with a knife with no fork. The only good side was the food I got was of good quality.

Staff very undermaned but still managed to deliver good service ...no guinness but still happy. To the owner get your hand in your pocket or you will have no staff

Staff seemed like they couldn't be bothered and were bordering on being rude. Three behind the bar but only one actually serving. The other two were chatting or busy doing nothing. Wine was served in a doubled up, plastic, pint pot as they had no glasses although two trays of glasses were placed on top of the counter right in front of us! The Katsu chicken was dry with little sauce. The burger was pale and barely cooked in the middle but burned black in other places. Didn't think you could go wrong with the ten chips I had but these were awful too. Absolute waste of money. You could not close one of the two ladies toilet doors as it was taped up in duct tape. Probably the worst pub I've ever been in. Avoid like the plague

I stayed here for one night and the bed was really comfy and the staff were friendly. I do think the bathroom could have done with a better clean, especially the black mould on the windows. The food isn't the best (I had a steak with mash that was just okay) and they could do with more gluten free options, but overall I'd say I had a good stay here

Brilliant pub in the centre of the atmospheric town

We spent a lovely night here ,the room was spotless and the breakfast tasty. We spent the evening in the bar everyone was so friendly. Would definitely revisit.

We booked for the rugby so we were going to be there for a long time. All was going well Until the manager opened the front doors apparently as it’s hot. We told her as we were sat by front door it was cold she said well everyone is hot. My friend after half hour shut the door as us and the table behind we’re shivering. Then the manager in charge opened the door back up and aggressively told us others were hot I said but we’re all cold she didn’t care. We decided to leave not order food and more drinks left before the England game and my friend went and asked to speak to manager, this lady said she was and called my friend aggressive which she wasn’t just wanted to make a complaint about the attitude. We left and won’t be back rubbish customer service and an aggressive manager

We deliberately attended to watch the rugby, as advertised the place to go to watch sport. We were greeted with the most unfriendly ‘manager’ I have ever experienced. Half way through the match, opened the door to the pub due to being to ‘hot’. So if you want to be freezed to death defo the place to visits! Also if you want to be terrified by the scary looking ‘manager’ please visit, she’s a delight! Especially when making a complaint about her. I’ve never experienced any thing like it, there was no speaking to her, even when I tried to explain we plus other tables were cold. Good luck to other drinking there, she’s a pleasure 🙄

Stayed here for one night and must say it was a great stay, lovely comfortable room, great breakfast, great staff, free car parking. Highly recommended and great value.

It's like a sports bar. Tv's in every corner, every angle. Great for football/rugby matches etc. People seemed to enjoy their meal, we didn't eat. Drinks were OK and staff friendly.

We slept in the pub rooms. With direct access to the room. Good food and beer..with low prices for being in England..

This was on a normal wednesday afternoon. No school holidays and at a very quiet time if day. Service ok food not bad. Sat there for about an hour and a half and nobody came to collect the dirty plates despite the pub not having very few customers.

We got off the motorway for a quick bite to eat and found this place in the town. Great value for money. Steak was cooked to perfection. Staff was lovely, places was very clean.

Only half the order arrived. Not a massive issue as appreciate mistakes happen. However, when the bar staff were informed they blamed our group for using the mobile app instead of going to the bar to order. They were very rude and said they’d bring the rest out when they have time. How long does it take to pour a soft drink? Half an hour later they still didn’t bring over the missing food or soft drinks. We had to argue to get a refund on the items they did not bring out as the rest of the group had finished eating/drinking. Overall an awful experience and the owner really needs to reconsider who they employ / send them to basic customer service training!

I always come in here for food and to meet friends when I'm in town in the day, I've been in here in the evening and found it to always be friendly and groovy when there's live music. Anna at the bar is always friendly and chatty

Good food, good service and football on TV

I am absolutely disgusted at the poor - well non- existent customer service this establishment has shown. I booked a room in December, which I was unable to attend, due to an accident. I contacted the hotel several times to transfer the booking. None of my calls or emails were replied to. I also contacted Booking.com (whom I booked it through) they were also unsuccessful at contacting them, despite several phone calls. Furthermore, another establishment who manages bookings for them was also unable to contact them - despite several attempts. I would NOT recommend booking anything with them, as returned communication, is obviously something this establishment does NOT consider to be important.

Staff super friendly, bar clean and tidy, great atmosphere but let down by the food. I looked at the food gallery before we went and was eagerly waiting arrival of our meals. I ordered a chip shop platter and although nicely presented, was served a frozen piece of packet fish with fries - not chips as was on the photos. The battered sausage had no appeal at all, the batter was aenemic and only on half the sausage, the peas were hard and the bread was stale with no butter. My husband had the scampi and was happy with his. The staff didn’t mention the January deal they had on so was a little miffed as I would have had just fish and chips and this would have saved us £8.00. We travel to Glastonbury quite often but unfortunately we won’t be back here again.

Typical British free house in Glastonbury. The rooms are little but clean and comfortable. Food and atmosphere were ok, great selection of ales too.

Went in for drinks and as a pub it was a pretty poor service. The guy behind the bar had to go and ask what ale they had?? Only one which wasn’t that brill anyway. That said they food others were having looked good

Friendly staff and great food - quality & value

Looking for a late breakfast we wandered in. It was empty but not an acknowledgement from the staff. No welcome, no "Take a seat & we'll be with you". No basic hospitality so no custom from us.

Booked a table for dinner on Saturday 25th November 2 days early. As with an earlier review I've read, the staff were oblivious to any reservation and that there was a booking system. On showing them our email confirmation of said table booking, the manager said "I don't know where you got that from. It's the first I've heard of it." No apology; rude and no attempt to find us a seat or take any order. Avoid at all costs if you expect to eat or receive a modicum of service.

On arrival to check in the pub was very busy with the staff too stretched to give us a proper welcome. We were eventually handed the keys and pointed in the direction of the bedrooms. The room itself was spacious, clean and had a good view of the Abbey ruins and The Tor. The bathroom however was rather awful. No towel rails, no heating of any kind and a cold faux-wood floor. It was freezing cold at 3pm. Through the night it got even colder. It was too cold to contemplate a morning shower and I came home without one. The breakfast was served by a calmer, more polite chap compared to how he had been on our arrival. He had a bit more time for us and was attentive to our needs. To be fair to him, he and his staff were under a lot of pressure to serve some very thirsty customers when we arrived. The bar work took priority over staying guests. The breakfast itself, (Full English), was unremarkable, with some items appearing to have been hanging around a while. We were offered additional tea and toast. We wouldn’t stay here again. At a cost of £114 per night, including breakfast, we would expect a more comfortable bathroom.

Sadly you can't do less than one star. We arrived for our reservation for food only to be told there was no reservation even after I had rang to confirm and showed them the email. The staff were rude and dismissive. Even going so far as to deny they had a booking system. When it is clearly on there web site. Stay clear. Worst pub in Glastonbury

Great breakfasts and lovely staff!! The OH said it was one of the best breakfasts hes had in months, and he was full all day. Will definitly be back here next time we're in Glastonbury!!

Great little breakfast, but lacks atmosphere of a market town pub.

We stayed one night, the bed was comfy , the decor was relaxing, there was a view of the Tor. Staff were relaxed and friendly and the food was excellent

ordered food, first three choices not available! Food wasn’t particularly hot, staff not exactly friendly. Dessert was delivered to the table and walked away, had to be called back and asked to clear the table of plates from the main course. Would not recommend.

The room was nice and the bed was really comfortable. The shower was big, and the towels were massive. There was tea, coffee, biscuits, etc., but unfortunately, there were no cups, so I couldn't have a hot drink. I could have gone downstairs and asked for one, but I had already undressed and showered. The breakfast was lovely and plentiful. There were lots of hot options as well as cereal. I'd stay again.

Overcharged for 4 drinks by bar staff , rectified but not in a friendly way..... rude! Then given wrong drink to which the bar staff jyst shrugged like it was our problem?
