Following the reviews on here & having just moved down to Calstock nearby three days before, we booked a table of six - one a birthday & three visitors down from Yorkshire. We even went over the evening before to check it out & decided it looked ideal - there was a fresh meat stand in one corner & lovely strains of presumably a local choir practicing folk songs wafting down from upstairs, great beer & we were shown the table we would have - all good. Turned up next night &, though the same barman was busy, nodded us through to our table & settled in. Just a few people drinking at the bar & no one eating at that stage. Got drinks in & looked at the menus. And then we waited, & waited. Two lovely young girls serving but in the end , after 15minutes we had to make a point of calling out to one to try & place our order. In the meantime the barman had come out to chat to a couple who had sat down to eat but did not come over to us. We were informed by the girl that we could not place an order yet as the kitchen had a large party to cook for upstairs & we’d have to wait till they were all done. Surprised, we enquired how long that would be. After checking, we were told half an hour… We were distinctly not impressed with this as at no point had we been warned that this might happen so after a further 15 minutes & drinks finished, we decided to cut our losses & leave. The large barman, who was the only person seemingly in charge, at no stage came over although he was obviously aware of our plight. Miraculously, when we got up to leave he disappeared completely & one of the young ladies was left to see us out. We expressed our complete disappointment with the whole situation & left. We felt extremely sorry that the girl had been left to carry the can & swore never to bother coming back., I cannot believe this is the same place as in the other reviews - apart from the lovely pub & excellent beer. A total disappointment. We ended up having an excellent Indian meal in Callington which thankfully salvaged the evening.

This appeared to be the only café open in Calstock when we went, so it’s not much to say it was the best cafe in Calstock, but it probably is …. Warm welcome, great coffee, extremely clean toilets (not often mentioned but hugely welcomed), tasty snacks! Highly recommended Thank You!

What a lovely pub. Very friendly staff and owners. Warm and inviting with a roaring log burner. But above all, lovely well cooked meals most of which are home made! My husband had the home made beef Bourguignon which was rich and tender (and of course delicious!). I had the gammon with pineapple AND egg AND home made chips with onion rings and peas. I had to take home the home made Baileys Cheesecake which was OUT OF THIS WORLD. If you don't believe me, try it!

Heard some good comments from friends, in the area so tried their Sunday Roast. Ample free parking and wonderful views of the River Tamar and in the distance Plymouth Sound. Warm welcome from the Hostess and bright clean restaurant and bar. Explained hadn’t booked a reservation but was hoping they could find us a table for two. Escorted to a table and given the menus to look at. Selected two Roast Lamb Sunday Lunches and drinks. Drinks arrived followed by two plated roast lamb served on a bed of mashed carrot and swede, lamb was topped with a great looking home made Yorkshire Pudding and drizzle of gravy. The two dishes of vegetables arrived immediately afterwards. Dish one was Cauliflower Cheese and the second dish contained six roast potatoes, beetroot & fresh apples, two whole braised leaves of curly cabbage and garden peas with a full sauce boat of roast gravy. The meal looked and smelt wonderful. The Lamb was very tasty and succulent, potatoes looked fabulous with a wonderful golden crispy outside with fluffy perfectly cooked insides. Beetroot and apples complimented one another both being beautifully cooked. Not normally a braised cabbage eater, however it was the best ever I’ve tasted. My favourite vegetable however was the fantastic cauliflower cheese. I could smell the mustard in the cheese sauce as soon as it was put on the table. (Old chef’s trick is to put small amount of mustard into a cheese sauce as it accentuates the flavour of the cheese) A tip taught to me in the 60’s when I was an apprentice. Wonderful meal couldn’t fault anything. Great tasting roast dinner. Cannot praise it enough. Will be returning especially as it’s 20 plus miles nearer than our usual dinning venue.

I am concerned by the review by Jayne from December 2024. Tamar Valley Garden Nursery does not serve cooked meals, only cakes and drinks. I think her criticisms were following an experience at Tamar View

Nice national trust house and grounds. Can’t review house or formal garden as not allowed in with dogs which is annoying. Brilliant on site walks some of which are quite hilly to say the least. Restaurant delivered nice hot food but it’s so expensive as is the norm now for NT places.

After walking some of the Tamar Trails wanted a light snack and a drink, called up to check as after 2.00pm and welcomed. Incredible pub of old, good atmosphere as a few locals in and unbelievable value for money for selection of panini, jacket potato and sandwiches along with liquid refreshments. Loved the events blackboard, the stand out DJ Pork Pie, a must see surely!! Thanks for a great lunch and welcome, can’t wait to revisit.

This is a lovely little pub with a big open fire. The landlady is very friendly. There is a village market held here on the second Saturday of every month and there is karaoke every first Saturday of the month with a very friendly atmosphere
