Had the chicken curry which was very tasty; nice chunks of chicken and mango chutney and all reasonably priced. Nice venue with music playing, Space Cowboys who were very good. Only fault was only 1 poppadom and no naan. For a few pence the meal would have gone from nice to excellent. Missed a trick there i think. Overall ok and we would both definitely go back.

It’s a very interesting little, cosy pub that must date back a few hundred years; and although I’ve not tried the food it always seems to be busy serving so that’s a good sign.

Went down to the Riser for Sunday lunch as just heard that they had started doing roasts again, was not disappointed. We were welcomed warmly and seated near the patio doors. I would suggest booking in advance as the venue is small but olde worlde. Our lunch came out hot, freshly cooked and very delicious, this was only their second week and if they keep this standard up they will do very well. Two of us had a three meat dinner and the meats were very tasty and cooked to perfection, the veg were fresh and not pre cooked or frozen, proper veg. The food was plentiful, so no complaints from us four.

I was revisiting the area on a business trip and decided to pop in for a drink. The prices were extortionate! The lady behind the bar who I can only presume was the new landlady due to being deep in paperwork - didn’t acknowledge me for a good 5 minutes and had very little people skills, when I was finally asked what I would like and I received my drink it was almost room temperature. Being a smoker myself I understand that you may want to pop outside to have the occasional cigarette however it is very unhygienic to then continue serving straight after without washing your hands. Can’t say I’ll be returning. Such a shame, used to a very lovely friendly local pub.

We were visiting Cornwall to deliver our son to a friend's wedding, with no other way for him to get there during a rail strike. It was a very long, wearisome journey - to and fro from Wiltshire. A comfortable watering hole was desperately needed! Thank heavens for google maps, which took us to the Rising Sun. It's clearly a pub that caters to locals, but we were made welcome by everybody there. It's one of those places that is quirky, traditional, and full of character, and we absolutely loved it. The location is hidden away down narrow lanes, but it really is worth searching out. The welcome is warm, and the food and drink are very good. I would return without hesitation....

This is a lovely old country pub full of character and friendly people but I'm afraid I can't say the same about the food. We had a roast dinner there last Summer which was probably the worst roast we have had and said we wouldn't eat there again. But we were invited by friends to join them for dinner and we didn't want to say no. But I wish we had as it was very poor yet again. We both had the steak and ale pie. The meat was dry, no gravy in the pie, doubt if had any ale in it . . . and potatoes??? A jug of 'gravy' was served with it which just tasted like cheap gravy granules added to water and a few token frozen chips . . . rubbish!!!

I don't think the photos online do this little pub justice. The views from the garden across the Tamar valley are fabulous and inside is the quintessential olde world pub. We sat outside as it was a lovely summer's day but I imagine it's a cosy place to sit by the fire in the winter. Didn't eat so can't comment on food but good selection of beers, had a nice pint of Legend and another of Sea Fury. If you happen to arrive by train beware the ENORMOUS, almost-vertical Stony Lane to get back to the station. You'll certainly feel it in your calves!

Over a quarter of a mile outside Gunnislake on Calstock Road, this is in a very pastoral setting. Some of the menu choices were not available, and I went for the chicken curry. Service was prompt and the curry very good. Washed down with a couple of pints of Jail Ale. If you are using the train as I did, beware, nearby Stony Lane (nicely resurfaced) is very steep, and I mean steep. Give yourself plenty of time for a few 'breathers' on the way up!

Travelled up on a Fri over 5hrs so booked in advance. Tired hungry & thirsty arrived at 6.25 pm, pub very busy, pointed to a corner of the pub by bar staff, table covered in dirty plates & glasses & no chairs. No attempt to clear table by staff & mention of no chairs met by shrug of shoulders. Clearly popular pub but couldn’t care less rudeness means our week stay in the area meant we took our custom elsewhere. 🤷🏻♂️

They stopped serving food at 3pm on a Sunday but I thought I'd check it out and maybe have a tea or snacks, maybe a local ale. I arrived inside and it took a good while for the server to even look at me. No greeting though; just went back to ignoring me. Rather than standing around like a lemon I went outside and sat in their rather comfortable outdoor patio (nice if you're still being responsible and trying to avoid SARS-CoV-2!). I hung out there for a good hour or two. Servers came and went (though still none greeted me). Eventually I left. I guess they don't want business? 🤷♀️

Are there two Rising Sun's? We were looking forward to going here after reading the great reviews. I love visiting quaint pubs and this sounded like it was oozing with quaint local charm. Husband popped in to check Sunday Dinners were being served and the Inn was dog friendly. Came out and said the staff behind the bar said they don't do Sunday Dinner but have chicken or beef with Mediterranean vegetables. Not really what we'd expected so we panicked we'd got the wrong place and went elsewhere for a traditional Sunday Dinner.

A sunny Saturday morning - great to be able to sit outside at the very end of October and enjoy the view across the valley. Quick friendly service in the bar. When the baguettes came, one cheese and pickle and other other tuna and mayonnaise, they were disappointing. They were long and well-filled, but they were bare on the plate with a small bowl of crisps - no salad garnish, no napkins, no cutlery and the baguettes were bendy, not crusty. It's a gem of a pub potentially, but they need someone with a sympathy for food in the kitchen.

The pub has lovely new owners who deliver a really nice welcome. It has also had an extensive makeover recently.I just have to write about the food! I ordered a rump steak, cooked blue. When it arrived it had tue wow factor. The steak was a great size and cooked to perfection. It arrived with home made onion rings in a lovely golden batter. Many onion rings have nothing inside but these had good rings of onion inside. The chips were also home made from potato. Large size with some crunch on the outside but plenty of potato left. The mushrooms were offered as plain, with garlic, or with garlic and Stilton cheese stuffing. I went for the garlic and Stilton. They were delicious! The meal also came with peas. There was an option for sauces as well. The cost of this was £14.95. In honesty, I have paid upwards of £20 in some “quality” restaurants, both locally and in Plymouth and not had such great food, so don’t be put off by the cheap price. My food was excellent. Whilst we were there we saw homemade pizzas delivered to a table and they looked fab also. Looked to me like even the base was homemade fresh. We saw numerous customers served whilst there and all let out a wow when their food arrived. Billy (the owner chef) has such a great smile when the food is delivered and so many compliments come from it. The pub is now full of pleasant customers and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, as are the staff. Billy cooks on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so great food is guaranteed those days for sure. Am going back tomorrow to try the Sunday roast. Can’t wait. Thanks for the lovely evening and food!

Staff at the Tamar Trails centre recommended we eat at this rustic pub with spectacular views from the beer garden. What an excellent recommendation it was. Natalie, a local lady who has recently taken over the food side of the business, makes the most wonderful food. All made from scratch. Perfectly seasoned. A real depth of flavour. A proper cook. We had homemade gammon, leek and cheese pie, chicken vindaloo (properly toasted spices without unnecessary scorching heat), real chips, homemade sticky toffee pudding and chocolate fudge cakes. Natalie also rustled up real sausages, real mash and gravy for our fussy little one. I rarely write reviews but Natalie’s care and fantastic food really deserve every support.
