Needed to grab some quick tea so decided we would try this. On ordering the food, no problems. Sigh says cash only, but they do take card, and here’s where it became an issue! Got the food, but forgot to order drinks at the same time, so tried to pay by card and was told there is a minimum spend of £10 on the card!! Seriously, we just spend £30 odd on food, so I said no and walked away. Sitting outside the man asked me to come back in and said ‘if we wanted the drinks, he would charge me the 10£ on the card and refund the change from the till’, again I stood my ground and said don’t worry about it! Funny enough we watched as another 2 potential customers were sent packing with a meal and drink that came to under 10£! Great way to Lose customers!! The guy wasn’t rude but I just came away wondering how custom they’re losing because of this policy, although he did say they’ve only had the card machine this week! Food wise - again, not overly convincing I’m afraid. Fish was lovely but chips were small and scrappy, and overdone! 50p for a portion of ketchup - mmmm - should have got a bottle from a local shop!! I know they have a captured audience and business that needs to make money, but please think about your customers experience. I don’t enjoy writing reviews like this and always shop local on holiday, however, it was the £10 minimum on a card that really got my goat!!

It has now become a family tradition (for the past five years) to visit the Blue Fish Bar for our first Friday night meal after the epic drive to Mawgen Porth. It never disappoints with amazing fish and great chips served with a smile. Highly recommended to everyone who wants a first class fish and chip dinner.

After driving 45mins as we heard that this was the best place for fish and chip I was very disappointed as they only had cod, and not as advertised on the webpage haddock or scampi. As a family we arrived 5 adults and two dogs and we sat outside. The man who was serving was also rude as on a couple of occasions he told telling us to leave as the dog was barking. Not friendly at all would not recommend this place and definitely not worth the drive

The best fish and chips around!!! Although it is cash only - they send you round to bettys to the cash machine which is closed in the evening so make sure to bring cash. Lovely man named John there gave us a free pot of curry with our battered sausages :))

Absolutely lovely fresh cooked fish, chips were cooked to perfection and it had gravy! The people that served us were welcoming and friendly. Brilliant

The chippy has a captive audience thanks to the stunning and busy location at Mawgan Porth, but also lack of other [affordable] ammenities. The place has limited opening hours considering it's location and it gets busy. Really busy. I don't see an issue with queing to order then queing again to collect food. It's an efficient way of serving large volunes of people, but for Christ sake on a busy bank holiday why cook everything to order which slows the service? The food is ok. We had burgers and chips so can't comment on freshness of fish, but given the wait for our food to be cooked you'd think it would be good yet the chips looked and tasted like they had been reheated and cooked in beef fat (edit: as we have since discovered everything is cooked in animal fats. A side note to the owners should they bother to read these reviews is to make customers aware you use animal fats as we had both vegan and vegetarians in our party who would not have ordered had they been aware of this. We now know it is mentioned on the website which isn't useful when signal around the beach is non existant). The burgers were dry and over cooked, curry sauce was sweet and full of raisins (we specifically asked if it contained fruit and was told it didn't which was why we ordered), the mushy peas were slightly watery so although prices seem reasonable the quality of food is not. Honestly, you have to be pretty useless to run a mediocre chipy at a seaside location. Just because the majority of your client base are visitors doesn't mean you can get away with serving substandard food. Some of us are local and won't be returning. To top it off they want you to pay 'cash only' when there are no nearby cash points and they actually have a [secret] card machine which indicates they don't declare all their earnings.

Best fish and chips we've tasted, well organised and pleasant chap served us. Will definitely be back for more , thank you .

We had read mixed reviews about this take away but wanted take away fish and chips to eat not he beach. The menu is small (only fish was cod) and it can get very busy. Overall, the food was good. Fish excellent, batter not too much, home made tartar sauce really tasty, chips could have been a little crispier but standard. We did go early and service was quick. It is a small outlet so at peak times there may be more of a wait.

I am totally amazed that this has been rated 4.2. The first review must be the words of the owner himself and any others above 1 will be friends and family. I honestly do not rate the food here and can not get my head around the setup. Yes, it's freshly cooked to order, but I joined a queue to place my order, then another long queue to collect my food 20 minutes later, only to be bitterly disappointed. At first the fish looked big enough to share but when cutting into it, it was no bigger than a sardine, ok a slight exaggeration on the size but there was a wafer thin layer of fish which was coated in a thick greasy batter served on a hand full of greasy chips and all at a cost of £10.00. So disappointing, and I absolutely would not go back!

Food tasted greasy and bland, chips were overdone and generally not very nice. It’s also quite expensive for what it is, cod & chips are around £12.50 for a fairly small portion, there didn’t seem to be any other other options for size, presumably so people have to order a portion each. Didn’t taste fresh at all. Not a great experience, wouldn’t recommend.

Can’t review the food unfortunately, although we wanted to. The shop only takes cash, and we only had our phones with us (Apple Pay) so we eat at the pub next door. However, a massive thank you to the 2 staff, who noticed that our car battery was flat and came to our rescue within minutes. First giving us a push, then finding some leads to give us a jump start. It was about 8pm, and we had 2 beach weary young children with us. So grateful for your kindness and time!

Alfresco Fish n chips on a Friday by the beach, great crispy batter with the freshest Fish and double cooked chips in an idyllic setting at a good price - what's not to love about this. Shop has a good efficient system of taking orders plus plenty of seating. Had four portions, two adult and two pensioners and not a crumb left of any. Struggled to find a few scraps of fish for the dog! Highly recommended with follow up pint at next door pub.

I asked for a large portion of chips. Paid 3.50. The chips that were given to me was just bits and the smallest of portions, only to be told they only do one size. Should have asked for my money bag. Poor to say the least will not be going back

I never write reviews but I was so disappointed after going there today. ....greeted at the front by a guy who told me to stand and wait at the front even tho nobody else waiting inside, then told to enter by grumpy old man who didn't seem to have the patience for me to read the menu. After ordering I was told cash only...the guy said very rudely 'can you see a card machine '. I asked to change the order so i could pay with the cash i had on me and he very sarcastically read out my order to me. After biting my lip I told him to forget it and we went elsewhere.

Nice and fresh fish and chips, the odd few bad chips and were just a tad bigger than french fries, a bigger chip would've been preferred... queuing and door bouncer a bit strange , but all in all quite good . Bit pricey but I'd say that's what you expect.

Upon arrival at the fish bar I thought I was at the front door of a night club wen I was approached by the worst Door staff with skinniest arms I’ve ever seen then to be told to stand outside the door like a naughty child til I was to come inside to order which I was then greeted by a very arrogant owner sat on a stool being very cocky. Ordering the food wasn’t a pleasant experience as he seemed to be still doing social distancing even the staff look grumpy no one smiling and all this before even getting the food. Once ordered then told to wait outside in another queue that was even more silly than the first one. Was really hoping for the food to be nice after all of this but was very very disappointing as the fish was slim and seemed to be wearing one of sell boys coats as batter and the chips had no inside were they been cooked either too quickly or reheated there wasn’t one whole chip in the box. Salt and vinegar was really nice tho but again upon asking on these was told to get them our selves very rudely. Definitely wont be going back! That was the the worst part of our holiday. Watergate bay tho was amazing nice and clean with lovely views I will making sure to read reviews more in future before eating out !! That fish bar is an insult to British fish and chips

For four years now it has been our first night ritual to get a fish and chip dinner here. It never disappoints with great crispy batter on fresh fish and plentiful chips. Yes, the queues can get long but surely that’s a good sign. Highly recommended

Not gonna rate as didn't use the chippy, cash only and NO cash machine after the Betty's surf shop closes.

Delicious fish, sausage in batter and chips. Yes, there’s a bit of a wait on a busy school holiday day but food is freshly cooked by a small hard working team to order and well worth it. Curry sauce and homemade tartar sauce are amazing and really make the meal. We always look forward to coming here on our annual trip to Mawgan Porth and always have a friendly welcome. There is also the added bonus of being able to enjoy your meal on the beach on a sunny evening.

Bit surreal. You are greeted by security at the door and allowed in once you are ready to order. We were the only customers but still had to adhere to a strict queuing system which seemed to be designed for crowds at Glastonbury. Once ordered, you are then told to stand outside the door until your order is ready. Chips were covered in grease and generally not very nice.

I have visited this chip shop on 3 occasions now The first during lockdown and waited for 1 1/2 hrs for 3 fish suppers and thoroughly enjoyed albeit expensive and they insisted on cash only (HMRC take note) The following year 2022 we visited again and things were similar, however the fish suppers I would say were pretty average and expensive as ever. For my last and final visit (much to wives disgust) we visited Weds 12/07/23 The fish suppers were poor to say the least. Thick horrible batter and disgustingly overcooked chips. And to cap it all I left feeling I’d been mugged It cost £20 for Fish/chips/peas , chips & peas / 1 can tango orange A complete rip off disgusting I suggest save your money and go elsewhere (still playing the cash only card) I certainly will not be back Finally learnt my lesson

Was really looking forward to our fish and chips as the shop always seemed busy. Very disappointing, we took our meal back to our holiday rental but if we had been sitting outside the shop we would have returned them. The chips were overcooked and terribly greasy. The fish batter was the same though the fish itself was ok. Unfortunately a lot of our meal ended up in the bin. We ordered just before closing so don’t know if the oil needed a change. Doubt we will return.

We have eaten here on many occasions, and as a local I find the bad reviews unbelievable, the cost of living and produce, especially in Cornwall are becoming unbearable for these business owners and I believe it’s great value for money, these guys work so hard and try their best especially on busy nights with people everywhere, I will be returning and enjoying your lovely food sat on the beach chilling out 😊

After queuing for 29 minutes to be called to put my own salt and vinegar on my scraps sorry chips I wanted to change my mind and be brave enough to ask for fresh chips they where yuk.

My mum (83) says "seriously THE BEST chips. Also good cod". And she's from Devon!

Cooking things in beef dripping in 2023 is just weird. Food meat eaters could have was a bit below par for a chippy and the veggies and vegans went elsewhere

We had 2 lots of sausage and chips as I was not prepared to pay £15 for Fish and chips which didn’t look particularly good. The sausage was the cheapest on the market and was still charged £4.25 for this if you take the cost of a portion of chips out of the equation. Poor quality chips was more scraps than chips and they were very greasy Would not bother. We went to the Cod End in Newquay last week and paid a lot less for a lot more. You work it out. Will not be spending my hard earned here Ever again.

Very confusing queuing system. 3 three other families got it wrong while we were there. Service was rude and sarcastic. Chips were so greasy we couldn't eat them. Fish was 6 out of 10.

Very disappointed with the whole experience. Very expensive, maddening queuing system (had to wait 35mins after ordering outside), unfriendly old man serving, and the food itself wasn’t even nice! The fish was mainly batter and the chips small and very crispy. The only good thing about the whole experience was watching the sunset on the beach opposite.

£7.50 for a battered sausage and mushy crap chips. Even the authentic chippy experience of a slightly aged chap calling it a batty didn't make it any better. Having lived in tourists areas all my life I understand they need to make money in a short period but I also know many places take advantage of a fresh customer base every week. Avoid!

Arrived in Mawgan Porth on holiday with my wife. We try and support the local economy where we can and so this was our choice having arrived mid afternoon on a Saturday. The portions of 'Large Cod' were a joke; kiddie size at best and although fresh, small fish never fry well and this proved to be the case. I even had the order one of these for my wife, who normly only has small one. The chips were awful too and to boot, some young lad with floppy hair (not tied back or netted) was wrapping them. So 2 large fish, 1 chips, a sausage and small peas was over £20 which is extortionate in my opinion. Probably the worst chippy I have ever visited, so do yourself a favour and drive to Padstow or Newquay; even walk if you have to.....

We had a nice meal here when we’d stumbled across it by chance. We had grilled fish with some salad which was well cooked.

We had a lovely takeaway on the beach, however as we've come from North we found it a little hard to swallow paying £11 for a takeaway fish and chips. We weren't disappointed by the taste though and we would recommend the scampi, fishcakes and sausage and most importantly the sunset!

Awful, Is the only word that comes to mind when describing this food and service. The Service ! You quickly realise you're doing the Blue fish bar a favour by going there to spend money, taking your money then being sent outside like naughty children to await being called for your order. The Food? I can honesty say in my 50+ years on this planet and traveling around the world a few times that this was the the worst attempt at fish and chips I've ever tasted, It's one thing to sell bad chips, but to sell bad chips and try and disguise them as cooked in beef dripping is crazy, what's more worrying is that reading the reviews others have left (supposedly) some people like them. As for the fish well the batter was not edible as tasted soft and soggy with a really unpleasant taste. The fish itself was probably the best of a bad lot dry and bland but edible. If you decide to give it a go take some mouthwash with you!

A queuing and ordering system that is clear as mud, an owner who sparks up a fag in his own shop as he prepares to end the day and a lack of fish on the menu all conspired against us on our first (and definitely only) ever visit. This place is an absolute enigma - it baffles me how it keeps going when it's organised like this. We waited for 25 mins in the queue to be told we hadn't followed the system - would have been nice to know there was one to follow. Maybe the staff could have at least gone outside to check / let people know that a 'system' was in place - talk to your customers make sure things are ok. We won't return and maybe by some of the reviews we actually were really lucky to miss this place out.

Who has cash only these days? Yet has anti Covid rules that make you queue outside, in torrential rain, to have the privilege of finding out when you actually reach the front. Pretty poor show.

Visited here last week. Arrived on Mawgan Porth Beach at 6pm, wandered over to get some food at 7pm, to eat on the beach. They operate an 'order one side, collect the other side' operation. Ordering was fine. The wait to collect was 35 minutes....

Beware, they only take cash! Waited in the rain to be served to discover I would have to find a cash machine and wait in the queue outside again. The nearby cash machine in another shop charges £1.95 for withdrawals. Decided to leave it. For...

Don’t usually review takeaways but these were honestly the worst chips I have had in my life. They were so crunchy, greasy and overcooked that you could no longer detect the potato inside the chip! Very bizarre! I wasn’t expecting anything brilliant but they were awful and barely edible. Fish and peas were fine. Would not waste your money.

The fish was flakey and lovely and white. A few bones so beware. Not keen on the after taste from the batter, possibly the beef dripping. Spoiled the taste of the fish for me. Chips had many little scratchers. Tartar sauce very nice.

We came on a sunny afternoon for our family fish and chips by the sea. Biggest mistake the man serving was very rude to all of the customers and the food was stale.

Overpriced and of very poor quality, chips were greasy and luke warm, my daughters fish had a very strong ammonia like stench which normally means it’s past it’s best. On a positive note the girls serving were pleasant but would not return again sorry 😞

Very disappointed having Queued for ten minutes only to find debit cards are NOT accepted, only cash and we did not have the £50 cash to pay for the order, and there are no cash points anywhere in the area, so we had to drive...

Unfortunately not at all impressed with our food from here. Our first night in Cornwall and decided to go for fish and chips after a lovely walk on Mawgan Porth beach. You place your order inside and then wait outside to be called for your order once its ready.... over 20 minutes later and we were called. We opened our parcels once back at our accommodation (approx 10 mins later). Our portion of chips were over cooked and hard, no more than 'scrat ends' to be honest, the piece of fish was okay. Small, slightly over cooked. The chicken burger... a large bap with a small, dry chicken burger, absolutely nothing else on it. Now, where we live, you get asked about salad, sauces etc? A real let down. Wish I'd have read previous reviews before visiting.... I notice that the owner has commented previously but it seems not alot has changed. This could be a really great place and get a good reputation if it just got to grips with the basics - come on Blue Fish Bar, your busy season is about to start. I'd love to see you get more good reviews that override the negatives.

What dreadful fish and chips for saying they had only just opened. My daughter was 7th in the queue had to wait half an hour in the cold and drizzle. Nothing ready and wouldn't take phone order! We live 2 minutes away and it was cold and the battered cod was tough and chewy (both cats even turned their noses up at it). 2 fish, a battered sausage and a single portion of small chips £20.25!! Total rip off and am slightly ashamed its affiliated with Mawgan Porth. I'll keep taking my trade to St Columb!
