I have to admit that I am not the person that comments on anything and everything, nor do I ever right a review of my experience. If I am unsatisfied with the experience, I just won't return again. But ... I have been seeing the Development of this establishment for that past 20 years and treated myself quite often to a night or two in any of the corner or best suites ( highly recommend those ) and enjoyed the ambiance and service this hotel had to offer. Our experience: Arrival to the hotel : We planned to have drinks prior to our meal. Found the bar area as busy as usual. With no free seats in sight, I ask the Brasserie manager if we could order drinks in the main lounge, whereas we been told that there normally is service but he has no clue what they doing today. Not answer I was hoping for. The entrance to the main lounge also been blocked off for some reason. Luckily the wait at bar was sufficient enough to pass the time for a table to become vacant. In previous visits, a relaxed table service was offered but not this time for some reason . Guess it’s an informal 5 star service.. , had to ask for bar menus as neither been on the bar or tables to see what’s on offer. ( also no usual complimentary nuts that used to be offered ) Restaurant We arrived early to our Booking at the samphire and were delighted to be able to be seated, unfortunately without any menus. It took about 10-15 min of us staring holes into the warm air, when I lost my patients and had to get up from the table to ask for menus at the entrance of the Restaurant. Yet again it took quite a while for us to order drinks and food as it seemed to be a chaotic service with everyone doing everything and no restaurant Manager nor head waiter in sight ( please note.. all evening ) . The lack of attention to detail was incredible .. table settings with knives to left and forks to right on every table .. just wow - giggle Food and drinks order done. ( ordered a glass of white wine with my mains, which never arrived ).. Drinks arrived what seamed ages. Overheard table next to us complaining about the slow service too, which been given a small apology but no solution to increase the speed of service ( yet again a lack of management ) Noticed the young waiter being unfamiliar on how to correctly present a bottle of wine and opening it, which I thought should be a training standard for a 5 star establishment. not only did he seem untrained, he also dried his hands in a used napkin left on the table next to him where diners just left. The pork belly starter , was below luke warm which was shame as its been rather tasty. I guess if a portion of this size is sitting on a kitchen pass for mere 3 min, it naturally will loose its core temperature, suggestion.. Next time use a cloche! I wanted to point this out to the service but yet again no manager or headwaiter to be seen and the waiters seem too busy to be bothered. Once they did ask if everything is alright, but by that time we finished what we had on the plate ( which is not a lot if you are hungry ) Unfortunately the main course of the hen and the monk fish not been any better and yet again being luke warm. Dessert of the frangipane tart and pineapple been ok, but yet again no attention to detail, as the dessert been bought out without cutlery being replenished prior. Ordered coffee to be served in the lounge, which arrived with no sugar or spoon and had to be asked for separately. When I paid my bill, I mentioned that the wine I ordered with my main course never arrived. No apology was offered.. A "informal fine Dining " experience. 95% informal - 5 % fine Dining. :-( Over the past 20 years I always chose the Headland hotel for its perfection, attention to detail and impeccable service, this time it's not delivered to its promise which is a shame cause that's what I will remember.. Coming from a 4 to a 5 star .. I expected more ( go back to 4 stars !!! You been better then

We were staying in a suite at the hotel for 4 nights , are were expecting good food and drinks. The first night we were given the Autumn Menu , which was very pleasant but nothing out of the ordinary. It had a reasonable selection . The some the food came out cold and the service was very slow. The second night we were expecting a change of menu , remembering this is the premium restaurant in a so called 5 star hotel. No it was the same menu. We ordered the steak , which said it could be shared , not that it must be shared , we double checked that it was OK for just one person to have it. It had a per person supplement. When the bill arrived although only one person in our party had had the steak we were charged double the per person supplement. On querying this I was advised it was a supplement based on two people sharing , when I pointed out that it said per person ,they went away and said on this occasion they would only charge one supplement. If there is a minimum charge this should be shown , when it says per person that is what the customer must pay. Not have to challenge the bill. Day three brought the same menu , this should not happen in a 5 star hotel restaurant. The menu should be changed daily.

We have been coming to Cornwall for 15 years or so and have always wanted to stay at the Headland Hotel. Staying in a self catering apartment within walking distance, we booked a table for 3 adults and were really looking forward to a special evening. The restaurant was quite quiet except for a large group. We had to request that the blinds be opened so that we could enjoy the view and later on in the evening that the top windows be closed as it was getting a little chilly. Whilst the food was excellent some of the servings were just too small......for example, one scallop sliced into three pieces???? Our main disappointment was the ambience. This hotel restaurant looks like it tries to be exclusive with its location, menu and pricing. However, it really lacks the ambience and finesse to pull this off. Items of cutlery missing, petits fours ordered with the coffee arrived after and were just 2 macaroons and 2 small cakes which looked straight out of a supermarket box. To be honest we left feeling a little disappointed and it all just felt a bit old and tired. Even on exiting the restaurant the bar area felt deserted and not somewhere you would want to stay. Sadly the main conclusion is that we will neither return to dine, nor to stay at this wonderfully positioned and historic hotel.

Visited for afternoon tea and was not disappointed. Food was loverly if slightly unbalanced in the quantities of cakes to sandwich’s. Refills of tea were readily available. The view from our table was spectacular. Considering the restaurant was not full the service could have been a little more attentive.

A fabulous restaurant. Superb food and very professional staff. An outstanding experience. The 3-course menu was very affordable considering the high quality of the food. Fine dining at its best and to top that the happy birthday message for my wife on the dessert plate made the night special.

Very rarely do I feel compelled to write a review on the way home from dinner. We visited the Samphire restaurant at the Headland Hotel this evening for my 40th birthday. The food was absolutely delicious, high quality and the presentation immaculate. By far and away the best part of our visit was the 5* service we received, so friendly and accommodating. We will definitely be returning on our next visit to Cornwall.

We recently stayed at The Headland Hotel and had some incredible meals in the Samphire Restaurant. The staff are lovely & the restaurant is clearly very well organised. It was so nice to experience fine dining in such a relaxed friendly environment. Highly recommend the Scallops & Lamb Breakfast was excellent with such speedy service and a fresh buffet with lots of choice.

Wendy and I had a wonderful afternoon tea here today. The tea was truly delightful and interesting that they change the selection monthly. May have to try March ha ha We were the last to leave the restaurant but felt no pressure to do so. Matthew was full of local history when we were asking about the hotel and local area all of which was fascination. Ryan was most attentive and is a credit to the hotel. Julie and Jesus gave great service. We thought they all made a great team and our experience all the more special. Hoping to live in the area soon so no doubt I will be back.

Having lived locally all my life I have always known this hotel for its reputation and have been countless times and recommended it often, but cannot do so again. We Booked an afternoon tea to celebrate an anniversary and a belated birthday and have never been so disappointed. Asked for Prosecco, they had none, a hotel of this size and reputation...no Prosecco! We asked for a wine list and there was only two other sparkling alternatives, a french champagne and a Cornish sparkling wine. We ordered the Cornish one and it came in an ice bucket. We were served a glass each and the ice bucket placed out of reached. That was the last time we were served any of the £48 bottle of wine by a member of staff, from then on I had to get up and serve my husband and myself and find a napkin to wrap the bottle in! A waiter then brought our tea order, tea for two and Earl Grey for one (which is served with fresh lemon separately) he had only brought a pot of tea for one and he’d put the lemon into the pot of earl grey. He quickly rectified his mistake and told us he was new but this didn’t fill us with any confidence that our much anticipated celebration was going to get any better! Expectations were already lowered! The cakes and sandwiches arrived and were fine but we have certainly had better and for £25 a head we all began to feel disappointed. There wasn’t enough jam and cream for the very dry scones and although we asked for more none appeared until we asked a second time. When the bill came we’d actually been charged for the Prosecco they didn’t have, we also asked them to remove the service charge, we are more than happy to reward good service but on this occasion we simply hadn’t received any and we certainly think its presumptuous to automatically add it to the bill! The Headland always had a fantastic reputation for quality and service but somewhere standards have slipped

Travelling solo can be a pain for finding restaurants etc so as I was staying in the hotel I thought I would book with the in house restaurant. Foolishly I didn’t think to ask the price, expecting a menu, but on arrival was told it was a buffet. Had booked and so went for it anyway, neglecting to ask the cost as a buffet can’t be expensive, can it? The food is tepid, very plain and generic, the veg laughable (roasted carrots, peas and broccoli boiled to death) and the price for this was £42 per head!!!!…apparently £10 more per head than last review. And they had the gall to then charge me for the water! Total bill for dinner was £63 including wine and a tip!!! There are plenty of nice restaurants in the local area where you can get a nice meal and a bottle for cheaper, avoid this reheated rubbish at all costs

I booked dinner for my partner and I last month as a treat for when we were on holiday in Cornwall. We had booked quite a late dinner so we could get the kids down first for the babysitter. When we arrived I saw a sign outside the hotel saying we are only serving residents at the moment due to staff shortages. I was a bit confused as I hadn’t had any call or email to tell me that, I just had a reservation confirmation email confirming an a la carte dinner reservation. When we got in to the restaurant, first of all we were seated right by the door when there were loads of much nicer tables available by the window. So I asked if they were reserved or could we sit there. They said oh I can relay one for you if you would prefer? We said yes obviously! Then we noticed people were going up to a buffet and bringing food back to their table. The food looked like canteen food so I thought this must just be an option as opposed to the a la carte menu. However when we asked the waitress where the menu was she informed us that the only option was the buffet. It wasn’t what we were expecting at all and not what we wanted so we decided to leave. As we had had to give our card details to confirm the booking I had to ask if it was OK for us to leave without incurring a charge! To be fair they were understanding however I should have been made aware of this before we attended and I wasn’t. As a result of this we couldn’t get anything else to eat as it was too late everywhere to get anything so we had to go hungry. We made the most of it but it pretty much ruined our only night off in months!! I can’t imagine the hotel guests were too happy with the food, the buffet looked extremely average so I’m not really sure what they were thinking?!!

We booked a Sparkling Afternoon Tea for 3pm on the 9th July 2021 for me and my partner as part of my 40th birthday celebration week down on holiday in Cornwall. We firstly had a red wine and a cocktail in the main bar which was quite nice luckily given the price. The main bar and seating area did look fairly dated and in need of modernisation and an overhaul, but I'm also mindful of the character and history of hotel. Things like dried water ingress patches all over the ceiling, peeling paint, cracked leather sofas, and the general decoration, things that should be sorted whatever the age of the building. The samphire restaurant itself did however seem a lot better in this respect, a lot cleaner, lighter and modern. The view from the hotel is brilliant of Fistral Beach, however we were restricted inside as it was heavy rain at the time of our attendance, nothing to do with the hotel. All staff prior to the afternoon tea were polite, pleasant, helpful and well presented in uniforms. We then had our sparkling afternoon tea. This was brought out to us minus the sparkling element which had been missed off for some reason despite clearly asking for it. We therefore had to wait before tucking in for the fizz to be brought out as we wanted them together. The sandwiches were very fresh, the bread was soft. I would say "standard / expected" fillings would be accurate, ie Smoked Salmon & Horseradish, Cheese & Pickle, Ham & English Mustard and Egg Mayonnaise & Cress. Just simply white or brown bread. Yes, perfectly adequate but not memorable by any means compared to a lot of other places. The plain scone was fine. The fruit scone was dry, vastly over baked and the dough over worked. They were also pretty small compared to what you would expect and get elsewhere. The clotted cream and Jam were lovely, as were the rest of the cakes / fancies. Yes ive had better elsewhere, so again it was adequate, poor in places but lovely in others, but not memorable.I was made aware afterwards that my partner had made the hotel aware it was for my birthday, and that it had been forgotten about and that she had to remind the staff. A short while later, our server Rose brought out 3 small cakes on a plate with a single candle out to me singing happy birthday to me which was a nice touch. Rose was very polite, helpful and cheery. She deserves praise.Unfortunately our other servers seemed disinterested, one in particular who I shall not name (curly hair), it was almost impossible to attract the attention of anybody due to staff shortages I assume. When my partner settled the bill, for 1 bottle of still water, 2 x sparkling afternoon teas, 1 glass of red wine and 1 cocktail, this came to £97.00. She was made aware this included a 10% service charge. My partner, due to the average afternoon tea and service asked whether this could be removed and she was told no it couldn't be. This should be discretionary, not forced!!! She was asked if everything was OK, and when my partner said "it was alright", no delving by staff in any attempt to rectify what was clearly a disasatified reply. It was signed on an easel outside the restaurant doors that there had been a number of staff shortages due to recent Covid isolations. We always would be appreciative of the fact that staff do their best and to appreciate the pressures they may be under, but it should never affect how they deliver customer service when dealing with you.Would I book here again? No.The best way to describe this experience are disappointed, average, pleasant, very overpriced for the quality delivered, and un-memorable. A solid and fair 3/5 at best.

Our booking was cancelled due to staff having to self isolate. This could not be helped but the restaurant didn't let us know. The only reason I found out was when I tried to book another date and saw on the website that they were only taking bookings for guests staying at the hotel. When I phoned I was told my booking was cancelled. Only by chance I found out. If I didn't turn up they would charge my card but my evening was cancelled and with no notice from them .

My husband and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary in style this evening at the gorgeous Samphire Restaurant, within the iconic Headlands Hotel. Being a fan of the movie ‘The Witches’ in my youth, it was a real thrill to visit the hotel. Thankfully, there was no cress soup on the menu and instead we were treated to a three course meal to die for! All three courses were superb, especially the delicate Dover Sole and scrumptious Date and Toffee Pudding. The night was made that much more special by the delightful Rose, our waitress, who couldn’t have been more lovely if she tried. A fabulous experience and a memory we will never forget. Compliments to the chef and all of the staff for a wonderful evening. Until next time.

Disappointing to have planned well ahead, confirmed a booking, planned around the visit and for a cancellation email approx 1 day before the visit. Over a bank holiday, that left us very little option in finding an alternative. The reason given was an unexpected need to limit capacity in the restaurant, though there are no clear reasons that local or national Covid restrictions would have mandated this. Perhaps there is a genuine reason which they chose not to communicate, but the explanation given feels at best a partial explanation, and at worst, covering up of over-booking or failure to adequately plan an event.

The reviews for Samphire were really hit & miss which almost persuaded me not to book a table... thanks to Covid so many restaurants were fully booked that I chose to give Samphire a go... and it just proved that sometimes it’s best to take the negative reviews with a pinch of salt. Lovely restaurant with gorgeous views of the bay. We received welcoming, friendly & attentive service throughout. The food was just stunning, could not fault a single mouthful. I chose the lamb loin & can honestly say it was the tenderest most tasty lamb dish I’ve ever eaten. Followed by the chocolate Marquis - decadent and a complete treat to eat. Both our meals were served beautifully. Spot on, would definitely return if we revisit Newquay.

Food was great, the staff friendly. However, the service at times could be slow, orders were taken and then seemed to be forgotten. We requested a tea and had to ask the assistant manager to chase as we had been waiting around 15 minutes. After eating in the restaurant in the evening we requested the bill, 20 mins later we asked the server if she had asked for it, the two girls at the till walked off after our server had spoken to them. It wasn't until 15 minutes later when we got up to leave that we finally received the bill. I feel that the amount of staff available was minimal and feel that management should look to employ further staff to provide this five star hotel restaurant with the ability to provide the service people expect.

I would never normally write a bad review, but tonight me, my partner and two friends went here for my 30th birthday. We arrived at 7.15 but didn't even get asked for a drink for 20mins, which took ages to get after them not having our first 3 choices of wine in stock, which they said they hadn't had in 2 weeks but still kept in on the paper printed menus. Which they just put on the table, didnt open and walked off, even though it cosy over £30. We waited over an hour for our meals before deciding to leave and going to the pizza restaurant next door which saved our night. Was the worst service I've ever received and only got attention when we asked to leave. The view was nice though until someone decided to shut the curtains.

The setting is lovely although there were lots of children playing around the tables and running around near us which I wasn’t really expecting at 5 star hotel afternoon tea. I think the staff should have probably sat us somewhere else and also asked their parents to do something too. The cakes were amazing and really enjoyed the champagne and tea too. The scones were not up to scratch however, they were a bit hard and again certainly not 5 star. The location is fab though and the views as amazing so definitely worth a trip, even just for drinks on the outside terrace.

The food was average at best, and awful at worst - my beef short ribs were so tough that I would have needed a hacksaw to get through them! The quality of local ingredients and availability of top class chefs in Cornwall means that a hotel like The Headland should do far better than this.

Chose this hotel and restaurant for its marvellous setting and proper old fashioned style for a pre-Christmas Sunday lunch The restaurant has glorious views over Fistral Beach, especially at sunset or on stormy afternoons and is very well-appointed.The starters (duck fillet salad, butternut squash) were lovely, as were the desserts and the mains of roast beef and turkey were good but not outstandingThe real disappointment sadly is the service. Despite numerous accolades and awards, the service was slow and not very attentive, (with the exception of Gabriel) It wasn't a case of numbers as there were plenty but drinks took a long time to arrive before lunch as did the menus and later the food itself. It may be that some of the staff were new or in training but we have had similar issues here over the years. This didn't spoil the experience, as time wasn't an issue on this occasion and the hotel at Christmas is a joy to behold but attention definitely needed. A case of style over substance perhaps?

The restaurant has amazing sea views (although you may need to ask the waiter to open the curtains if it's sunny!) and the ambience is very welcoming. We were served by knowledgeable waiters and a sommelier. The menu was varied and had dietary information marked by each course, which was very useful and saved asking about each individual course! Price-wise it wasn't too bad (£39 for three courses, so not cheap but also not extortionate). Maybe most importantly, the food was amazing!! We ate here whilst staying at the hotel, the menu is quite small but still enough to make you question what you want for dinner for some time. The options are quite fantastic and encourage you to try something new. The service was impeccable. Drinks were served quickly and the food was just incredible.

Quiet night for the restaurant as it is the low season probably, we handed up to the bar. We have been served amazing cocktail made for us from Baptiste, definitely ask him. It was on top 3 of the best cocktail we ever had. Then went to the samphire restaurant, atmosphere in there is not great however the Chef made such a wonderful meal. We both were in loved with the food. If Matt the waiter is not the head waiter then he should be. Service was excellent, smiling, know the menu, recommend well, well served and good check up without interrupting us.

We had the most fantastic meal on Valentine's Day. A harpist played whilst eating which added to the ambience in the restaurant. The staff had, as usual, perfected the little details such as a glass of fizz on entering the restaurant, heart table confetti and a free gift, also a red heart chocolate on each napkin. The five course meal was superb with a good choice of food, all delicious, and finishing with coffee and petit four. The chef and their team must be congratulated on their cooking and presentation skills. And at £45 pp represented very good value.

Being allergic to milk and eggs I had to order ahead. Reasonable number of choices and I have to say the food was amazing! Service wasn’t particularly good, had to wait quite a while from being seated to my partner’s order being taken. Waitress serving us was pleasant. Think staff need some additional training though as witnessed another waitress taking 10 minutes to fillet a salmon for a guest at another table whilst his partner sat watching her food going cold!

First of all I will be honest, I mystery shop and review for a living. However the three times I've stopped for tea here I wasn't working, and I'd rate it the best afternoon tea I've had. They serve afternoon tea on the tiered cake stand, with proper loose leaf tea and crusts of the sandwiches. The stand is full of cakes, sandwiches and two scones with large pots of cream. In truth one tea serves two. They are also small people friendly, and will substitute the sandwiches for cheese or ham.

Chose this restaurant for a romantic meal after reading the reviews. Arrived early to be greeted by a fab guy who took our coats, chatted with us and led us to the bar area. Then went to the restaurant - given a choice of delicious fresh bread to eat whilst choosing what to order. Decided on the Mojito aperitifs followed by starters, the Picanha roast steak for two accompanied with a fine bottle of Merlot. Were then told the Picanha was no longer available - we should have been informed of this when given the menus! So, ordered the fillet steaks. Then our starters arrived when it should have been the aperitifs! I had to state that we hadn't had the aperitifs and they then brought them over. Next arrived the fillet steaks but no bottle of Merlot to accompany the meal.Again, I had to state we hadn't had the Merlot but it was now too late. The manager was apologetic, took the Mojitos off the bill and asked if we'd like coffees but it was a really disappointing meal!

Came for a birthday meal and enjoyed it. The room is light, airy and the decor is excellent. There is a fabulous view over the beach. We watched a glorious sunset! The food was well cooked and presented and spot on for a 2 rosette restaurant, we ate from the set menu which had a good range of choices. The service could have been better. Staff were all friendly and willing but missed the target in a few areas:we asked for water when we ordered our aperitifs, the bread came followed a short while later by our aperitifs but we had to ask again for water.we had finished the bread by the time our meal order was taken but no-one offered any more bread (which was delicious and i would have had more).my wife wanted another drink but no-one noticed us looking around - I eventually caught the eye of a waitress and ordered the drink - after c 10 mins I reminded the waitress who apologised that she'd forgotten, the drink then arrived within a couple of minutes.when the bill was presented I put my card on top to indicate I was ready to pay but it took just over 15 mins before the card machine came.Unfortunately the exterior is being decorated and something sticky was on one of the chairs which caught my wife's coat. The staff handled it very professionally and immediately cleaned the mark off and insisted that if we weren't totally happy that they would dry clean the coat. Not needed as the mark had gone, but exactly the right response. So, some minor service issues which I'm sure will be improved by the time we come again - which we will do because overall it was a good meal in a lovely setting.

We had a lovely meal at the Samphire restaurant. The set menu has a good range of options. The food was beautifully presented with amazing flavours and generous portions. The setting, with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean, is stunning, worth going early to make the most of the views. Elegant restaurant with crisp white tablecloths and smartly dressed waiting staff, who are friendly and efficient without being obtrusive. The hotel also has a very nice bar where you can lounge on comfy sofas sipping cocktails before or after dinner. Great place for a special occasion, highly recommended.

Terrible food. Starters clearly all pre prepared and kept in a fridge. My 3 scallops were the size of a 5 pence coin so basically left with a plate of cucumber. Main course not much better. The restaurant made a number of errors with our bill and have been very rude when trying to resolve. There are so many better places to eat out in the area. Even if staying in the hotel, do not eat here!

We managed to have a couple of hours to ourself whilst away which is rare as my mum looked after our daughter so we could celebrate/commiserate 10 years of marriage ... We booked the headland as had stayed a few times and had breakfast there and lunch. It was a super meal at not a bad price... We had a few courses and wines and total bill was about 100£ which for the service and quality it was great ... Our server was Shaker or something to that effect and he was superb. I did fill out a comment form so hope he received the praise.

Very disappointed on arriving 5 mins late for a dinner reservation to be told that chef refused to serve dinner because he had shut the kitchen down. I am surprised that they were unable to help us in any way. The holder for the keycard clearly states on the back that during school holidays they take bookings to 9.30pm. We eventually decided to drive to the next bay and visit the restaurant at the Watergate Bay Hotel. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. Perhaps the chef should have had the curtisy to come out himself and tell us instead of hiding behind his staff and in the safety of the kitchen. Felt sorry for them. I assume he would expect to be treated in the same way if the shoe was on the other foot. I have never ever in all my travels experienced such poor customer service

For a 2 Star Rosette restaurant it disappointed from start to finish for us. Bad service, poor quality raw materials that were badly cooked and repeated when re-done with fresh ingredients. Shame as site wonderful and some staff lovely but have to get the basics right. We did receive an apology from the Chef and Maitre D' but it ruined our last evening of our holiday in Newquay/Cornwall. If this was my business I would have been horrified and I do so much more to keep my clients coming back.

We were not resident but decided to eat here and booked. Greeted warmly by maitre d' and shown to a table at the window. Traditional table arrangement and staff well trained. Choice of freshly baked rolls and our drink order brought quickly. . Only hiccup was they then forgot to take out order for half an hour and did apologise and brought meal out quickly when we reminded them we were waiting. The food was excellent. I had chicken breast with chorizo from table d'hôte menu. Delightfully different. Husband was equally pleased with his choice of Brill verdure. Good value we thought for £30 for two courses or £36 for three courses. Not much more than we had paid at other Newquay restaurants during our stay in a much pleasanter situation.
