I popped in for dinner with no notice as I happen to be staying at an Airbnb in the village. I was astonished at the quality of the kitchen there. I had planned just to have a main course and went for the lamb cooked two ways served with a mushroom purée, half a portobello mushroom and a few other morsels. But the crispy squid on the menu sounded quite good as well so I did that too as an appetiser. The squid was lightly battered and served with a lovely Asian dipping sauce. It was very good but not exceptional. However, the lamb dish was Michelin star quality without a question. The kind of thing you see the professionals on Masterchef turning out. And then, as I was asking for the bill, the waiter told me that today’s special was a raspberry soufflé. And they had only one left. So my quick single course dinner ended up as a three course one and the soufflé was an absolute triumph. Light and fluffy as it should be with a gorgeous flavour of raspberry and served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. If you happen to be nearby and are hungry, go. You won’t regret it: it’s a wonderful restaurant.

I was disappointed in the Crown Inn as a place to stay overnight. I wanted to be close to Horsted Keynes railway station (5 minutes by car) in order to be there by 6.30am for an early morning photo charter. So, I arrived at the inn around 5pm on Sunday night to be told 'we don't serve food after 4pm on Sunday'. And apparently other pubs in the area didn't either. 'And we cannot do breakfast as early as 6 am.' It would have been good to have known because I would have stayed somewhere else that had more flexibility. My room was small. clean, recently refurbished with a comfortable double bed, flat screen TV, small bathroom with shower, tea and coffee facilities, small wardrobe, hair drier and two bottles of water. But nowhere to use as a desk. The guest wi-fi was non-existent and I had to come down to the bar for another wi-fi connection. That one did work in my room but was quite slow. I paid £103 for bed only. I did not feel this was good value. I was annoyed that the lack of food wasn't highlighted in the information provided when I booked. And I thought the room was at best average and not worth what I paid. It is rare for me to write such critical reviews, and I don't like doing it. I think the management need to make their information much clearer.

After a trip to Standen we fancied a nice meal and chose The Fox at Sharpthorne. We were delighted with our choice; the bar staff were extremely friendly, warm and helpful, the food was very good, (the grilled prawns were absolutely delicious!), the whole pub had a very cosy and pleasant atmosphere! Bravo to the team at the Fox! We will definitely return when in the area again! 🦐👏🏼

Horrific service quality. We waited about 45 minutes for our food to be ordered only through directly asking the staff to take our order. It then took an additional hour for our food to arrive. For a table of three that ordered very basic food, this is inadequate service which that brands itself as ‘under new management’.

Another amazing visit for lunch with friends. Gravtye is a perfect blend of classic charm and modern sophistication. The restaurant has a light floral garden decor, which overlooks the gardens. Making it perfect backdrop to enjoy the exceptional food. The dishes are imaginative . Each bite was a celebration of flavor, with fresh, vibrant produce and carefully chosen elements that created a beautiful balance on the plate. The food is presented with artful design, almost too beautiful to eat — though of course, we did ! The staff are attentive, professional, and impeccably presented, ensuring everything is seamless and enjoyable. They are knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients. They made us feel truly cared for throughout our time there. Cant wait to return!

We had a lovely meal. We all had the mackerel pate to start which was delicious. The interior is classy and comfortable. The staff are friendly and professional. It's not cheap, but is probably worth paying for. I'm vegetarian and the choice is limited. For vegans, it doesn't provide any real choice. I think this could and should be rectified as it is easy to modify the menu.
