We booked the table last minute really on a Saturday night for 8pm. We arrived at 8:12 and we were the only people in there which I thought was a real shame. After apologising for being late we were told that the kitchen was about to close in quite an aggressive manner. As a newly reopened place that was empty it wasn’t the welcome we thought we would get. Again, another person in our party was told on the way in that the kitchen was about to close, by that point it was a bit awkward. Anyway, we got on with the evening and to summarise the food was quite impressive. The fish was slightly overcooked but the people who had the duck special really enjoyed their mains and so did the person who had the beef pie. The service got better throughout the evening but it will always stick in my mind the start to the evening. Sussex has some amazing pubs and places have to really stick out for people to be repeat customers.

New chef just taken over & running the place. First week open so not yet a full menu. Sunday lunch was exceptional & well cooked. Both had Sunday roast beef & chicken. Looking forward to trying it out in the week. Very reasonably priced & with a well matched wine list at affordable pricing. Staff were very well trained. Smart relaxed surroundings

It’s so good to see, and eat, such beautifully cooked good quality food. And they have avoided the trap and possible detriment of overbooking the Sunday lunches. So, congrats to all the staff for making it such a delightful experience in such a good ambience. And to Gran’ma for babysitting when necessary. :-) [Book in advance to avoid being disappointed]

Was really looking forward to a nice meal with friends. There was just 4 of us. Firstly the table was so sticky we had to cover it with paper serviettes. All the tables were sticky so we didn’t move. We booked a table for 3.30pm but when we got there were told the kitchen closes at 4pm so we had to order quite quickly which we were ok with. We ordered drinks, 2 beers and 2 glasses of red wine. We were not asked if we wanted a bottle or a small or large glass. The beer arrived fine, the wine eventually came….in dirty gin glasses with lipstick marks. We said the glasses were dirty and they got taken away but I watched as the young girl wiped the glass with her t-shirt and came back. We said no….clean glasses please… we asked the girl very calmly if she was new here to give her the benefit of the doubt, she didn’t answer. The wine returned in two odd wine glasses. The wine was very nice. A young chap put the napkins on the table and gave cutlery to 3 of us. The napkins were damp! We got up and found some dry ones. Our meals arrived but not hot…the vegetarian meal was cold. When I said my meal was cold, I was asked what I wanted them to do about it? There was no apology. Well, could I have a hot one? It eventually came back hot but had obviously just gone into a microwave as all the same as when it went out. The gravy I asked for was an onion sauce but hey ho! The nutroast had Brazil nuts which tasted plastic. The vegetables were two bowls between the four of us but no serving spoons so we found a dessert spoon to use! The phone would ring right by us, my partner was up at the bar at that time and when answered the person on the other end was put on loud speaker and left on the bar top whilst the girl carried on pouring drinks….even through the poor soul on the other end had lost her purse and wondered if it was on top of the bar. The girl just looked at my partner and shrugged her shoulders…..no not here she said and carried on.. could you take my number and call me if it turns up? ….No need…got it. Bottles were thrown, crashing into a crate right by us giving us a shock each time! We ate up what we could and paid the £103 begrudgingly and left hastily to continue our evening elsewhere as it was such a disaster, sadly. Our friends were embarrassed as they had recommended going there. We certainly won’t be going back there though. We were the only customers in our part of the eating area, there is another area opposite but not sure anyone was there either so they were not busy but there didn’t seem to be anyone in charge, just run by 3 young people. We asked if the manager was there when we left but were told he had left.

I have never done a review before because I have never felt the need to but honestly my visit seriously deserved it. My partner and I visited on the 24th for an over due date night for our anniversary only to find that there was a band on! We had booked a table inside but the staff were so lovely and accommodating that they found us a perfect table outside! The food was amazing and the band were unreal it was way more than we could have ever expected. It’s great to see a group of staff really enjoying their shift and having a laugh with their customers it realy brings the mood up and keeps the atmosphere glowing. At one point the land lady I think her name was Claire came out and checked on us personally which was amazing to see, she also told us that her business partner was the head chef, it’s so refreshing to see business owners so invested and proud of not only their company but also their staff. 10/10 will definitely come back

We were the only customers and the menu was limited given it was the first week after lockdown so one should take that into account. However, the pate starter was not a good pate (probably the worst I've had) although there was plenty of toast with it. The burgers were large but the rolls not very pleasant. The biggest problem was that we were sat outside (no other option) and it was freezing. The waitress was kind enough to put some logs on nearby fire but they were damp. Consequently, the acrid smoke engulfed us making it a very unenjoyable outing. Two weeks later and our coats still wreaked of smoke.

Came in after a 5 hour walk to have a couple of drinks and some food. Bar staff didn't have a clue with our food going to the wrong table, the food itself was terrible - had the gammon and it was as though someone had poured table salt over it, and to top it off the soft drinks were off as not enough syrup in there.Had to wait about 40 minutes for the food even though there were only about 6 people in the pub.A thoroughly disappointing end to what had been a great day

Having read previous great reviews we went to the Fox for dinner but were very disappointed by our experience. We started with what should have been a simple drinks order but were brought the wrong drinks. We then waited over an hour for the food without anyone letting us know why the wait was so long. We found the front of house staff to be severely lacking - no warm welcome, no smiles and no customer service. To top it off, the bill they brought at the end was incorrect. Whilst the food was excellent, it had been ruined by the rest of the experience. I would not recommend this pub to anyone.

Came here for a meal after staying in the nearby campsite and it wasn’t really up to standards. Triple cooked chips were incredibly salty, service was so slow and the “blue cheese salad” was just a dressing, no cheese present. The burgers were amazing and really well cooked! Although the chocolate brownie was more of a rock than a brownie and cold. One server perhaps the manager on shift was so loud we could hear every little comment she was making from the other side of the restaurant, which seemed a bit unnecessary and quite annoying. We asked for mash with one of our meals and not only did they forget about it, they didn’t apologise when it arrived 10mins late. Music was very odd and didn’t seem in keeping with the theme of the restaurant and was a bit too loud tbh. Their Covid precautions were very good and had hand sanitizer at every table which was nice. Overall a little over priced for what it was and just incredibly slow service (there were only 3 tables including ours).

If anyone reading this is considering eating at The Fox Inn, I would strongly recommend you take the time to read my review before making a final decision.I have never had an experience as terrible as I did eating at The Fox, and I am honestly still in disbelief and shock that it happened. What makes this experience even worse than it already is, is the fact it happened whilst out for a family meal, celebrating my Grandmother's 84th Birthday. Myself, Wife, Grandmother and Brother-In-Law ate at The Fox on Saturday evening. As we were approaching the pub, a man who appeared to be in his 30s, was swinging from the chains outside holding on to a dog. As we got closer to open the door of the pub, he started swearing at us, telling us we're not welcome. We ignored him due to his obvious drunken state, and entered the pub.The pub was quiet and we were shown to our table in an empty room. As we sat down the same person from outside came into the room and sat down at the table opposite us, facing our direction. Whilst he walked to his table to sit down, his dog jumped up at our table and knocked the cutlery on the floor, which shows he had no control of the pet.He begin talking to us, asking us inappropriate questions, deliberately trying to get a reaction. I asked the man if he wouldn't mind leaving us alone as we were celebrating my Grandmothers birthday, but he then started being aggressive. I wasn't having any of it, so spoke to the landlord immediately and made them aware we were being harassed. The landlord apologised and told the man he had to move to the other side of the pub. He didn't.It took about 20 minutes for this man to move, and I had to ask the landlord 3 times to move him because he refused. During this time he continued to swear at us, and made sexual and explicit comments to my wife whilst in the company of my Grandmother and Brother-In-Law. We discussed leaving the pub, but decided against it as the only other pub in the village (The Cat) was fully booked. After the man left the room, we didn't hear much from him, although he came back into the room another 2 times throughout the evening and just stood and stared at us. Other diners were in the room at this point and they were all starting at him in disbelief. He looked a mess and was dressed like a 15 year old. He had slit cut eye brows, a baseball cap, puffer jacket, dirty black Jean's and cuts on his face. It was clear he was a friend of the landlords and someone who is in the pub often, judging by his behaviour and arrogance. He kept going behind the bar, was letting his dog roam free, and was harassing anyone who walked past without a care in the world. As we left the pub and were walking to our car, we saw the same man towering over another customer who was sat on his own eating a meal. The drunk man had his fist in this person's face, and the customer immediately stood up and punched. The drunk idiot ran behind the bar holding his head. This was the highlight of the light and a clear indication he was delibrately causing trouble for a reaction which he got.I just can't believe we had to endure this behaviour and the landlords thought it was acceptable to keep him in the premise after so many complaints. They apologised several times which I appreciated, but at the end of the day they are responsible for him and should have done more. He should have been thrown out immediately. They're excuse was 'He's drunk, and doesn't usually act like this, please don't judge us based on this'. At the end of the day, the landlord sold him the alcohol which put him in that state, and they have a responsibility to ensure their customers are safe from violence and harassment, and they failed miserably. The food was good, but I would never return. We weren't even offered any complimentary drinks, or discounts off our meal. If you're considering going to this pub, I would avoid it at all costs and instead book The Cat. I have eaten at The Cat several times and it truly is a stunning restaurant with class and respect.

First impressions are crucial. We were waited upon by a brisk, snotty barmaid (or landlady?), who was either (a) stupid, (b) rude or (c) had a hearing problem. The pub was very quiet and the order was very simple - “ a bottle of still mineral water, no lemon, just ice” The barmaid actually repeated the order, but I received “sparkling” (a misnomer as it turned out) water, lemon and no ice. She’d poured it before I had a chance to stop her and I decided I’d drink it anyway - it was vile - flat and metallic tasting and had clearly been around for some time. Two swigs was enough and I left the rest. Yes , we could have complained, but the service and the lack of ambiance ensured that we were going to leave toute suite. This lack of attention was disconcerting in a very quiet pub which isn’t very picturesque with little outside space. Definitely won’t be back!

The people I met in West Hoathly were all smiling and helpful. The Fox is one of two pubs in the village, and it is small and friendly. It has very good feng shui--it has a slightly unusual layout, which is only possible because it is situated on a pointed street corner.

I stumbled upon this pub last weekend by chance on a hungry Sunday afternoon. We were so happy to have found it - we ordered the beef burger and it was absolutely delicious. The staff are super friendly and the decor is so warm and welcoming, it's hard not to fall in love with its quirky features and fireplaces.

We were in the area and popped in for a family Sunday lunch. It doesn’t look much from the outside, but it’s got a cosy and welcoming feel inside. The carvery was great, meat beautifully cooked, with generous portions. Puddings were great too, and prices were reasonable across the board. The staff at the carvery and in the bar were extremely friendly and helpful. We’ definitely be back.

Called in as a treat with the hubby and after some decisions we had starters and main oh & he had ice cream too!! The food here is exquisite! We both had steak which was cooked to perfection!! I even changed my chips to dauphinois! Bar man was very helpful too, we’re not local but will definitely visit again as hubby is working that way!

Booked Saturday lunch on our way to a wedding at a nearby event venue. Turned up very early after misjudging the M25 traffic. Were graciously welcomed. We cannot speak too highly of the standard of food. We started with Gnocci (to share) followed by Fish pie and Garlic Prawns (a certain amount of sharing). Both excellent. We were then tempted by the Pannacotta (spelling?) and the sorbet (more sharing). All made in house! Very fine (with a bottle of the Malbec), we went on our way happy and satisfied.

We had the roasts. I had the vegetarian which was yummy except my roast potatoes didn't come with a vege gravy. My date had the roast beef and really enjoyed it. Service was friendly and attentive although the waitress asked if we wanted anything else if she had been more specific we might have. Thoroughly enjoyed and would visit again.

Came in on Sunday midday, and the place was fully booked. Fortunately the lovely ladies, who greeted us warmly, managed to squeeze us in somewhere next to a lovely fire.

After a long walk on Ashdown Forest decided to stop for a quick lunch and beer. Very warm welcome. Lovely menu but we really only wanted a sandwich. Bar lady said they did not do sandwiches on Sunday but they would talk to kitchen. If we did not mind home made rolls and meats from the Sunday roast they would knock something up. Well what turned up was a feast, warm rolls stuffed with roast chicken and beef, 2 each, triple cooked chips and mayo. Truly delicious. Roaring log fire, great hoppy beer. Fabulous.

We made a booking for 20+ friends to have a get together over the Christmas break with an afternoon buffet. Everyone commented how excellent the food was, everything from the delicious mini steak pies to the superb quiches all cooked to perfection with quality ingredients. Nothing was to much trouble for Tim, Claire and their staff, the welcome received from them matched the open fires, warm and welcoming. Fabulous. Thank you very much.

I would like to thank The Fox Inn who have held two quiz nights recently to raise money for Ehlers-Danlos awareness. I am aware that they often raise money for local charities and think they deserve some recognition for this. I have yet to eat in this pub, but it is pretty/nicely decorated, clean and the staff are very friendly. I will be going to eat there at some point as the food looked great. They hold themed nights and host live music too. I once came here years ago when presumably it was under different management and it is just as well I didn't write a review then as it was horrendous! Well done to The Fox and many thanks from Sussex Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes.

Fabulous from beginning to end. Table of 8 with a 330pm booking on a sunday. Warm welcome although slightly confused as the arrival time had changed. Not a problem for them though. Great service, lovely staff and the food was exceptional. Didnt wait too long as we missed the Sunday lunch rush. Would go back in a heartbeat!

I live in Australia and managed to organise a special birthday lunch for my mother-in-law at the Fox. The staff were absolutely wonderful to work with while planning via emails and I was delighted by their customer service. Our guests had a wonderful time. Great venue, great food and outstanding service. Thank you!

We had a meal for the first time in this lovely and friendly pub. The staff were very friendly even though they were so busy. The food we had was excellent and we would definitely visit again. There was a group of people that were complaining they had to wait too long. Why carnt people be patient ! as i believe a member of the kitchen staff was unable to work that day and they were all rushing around to try and meet the high demand for their quality food.

The eclectic and recently redecorated Fox was a superb find when I moved into the area a year ago.. and I've eaten here with friends and alone on a few occasions, each time I've had a great meal, great service and chatty welcoming staff.

Just had the most delish lunch at the Fox. We don’t often have the chance to eat out as a family (our dogs included!) but when we do ithe family always choose the Fox in West Hoathly. The food is constantly excellent, the staff are alway lovely and the ambiance is spot on. These people deserve to do really well! They really have thought of everything we’ve just booked the family Xmas eve supper here too. Thank you x

Great food for a Sunday dinner. ATMOSPHERE was great and the staff were lovely even though someone had been very rude and had walked out on that day. The time taken for food was perfect as we could all catchup before eating.

Pleasant quirky surrounding, possibly trying a little too hard. I went to look for the gents and had to go and check what the other toilets were labeled.. Vixens I discovered... to be sure that the door labeled Tods wouldn't lead me to embarrassment.

Would have stayed for puds but decided to leave that for another day as time was running out! An interesting find to add to our collection!

I loved this place and will definitely return. Warm, welcoming atmosphere with delicious organic food. My coffee was perfect and Ploughmans lunch was fresh and very good value. But it’s the atmosphere and the staff that make this place really special.

Found the restaurant while we were in HH for errands. Lovely friendly staff & good variety of choices on the menu. The superfood salad with added grilled salmon was the best restaurant salad I have had in a long while. Very fresh ingredients and perfectly cooked salmon. The decor, furniture and layout of the interior is very dated, but we will both be back for the great food & service!

Very good fish and chip shop. Always enjoy the fish whether cod or haddock. Better parking than any of the other fish and chips shops in East Grinstead - like to make a quick getaway so food does not go cold!
