The food was a similar quality you'd find in a high end restaurant in London and the service was fantastic. A nice pub with a homely feel! Would highly recommend

We tried their set menu. It was not worth the money- portions were small and generally very average. The main course of onion tart was the smallest I have ever seen accompanied by some lettuse.

Our first visit dining at the Sloop for a few years despite often visiting for drinks. We had a table of 4 for Sunday Lunch. With regards to service, I felt that there was no main host or manager, no welcome, but we we were 'efficiently serviced' by nice young team. We had different lunches , pork belly, nut roast, roast beef which had the same selection of vegetables , potatoes and Yorkshire which was all fine, with the nut roast being praised. The beef however consisted of two wafer thin slices and when additional gravy was requested for the table we received a tiny jug of a runny concoction that was different to that originally served. Overall, I was disappointed that The Sloop did not meet its potential and was not therefore good value for money.

We were staying at WoWo campsite and The Sloop was recommended as a good pub to walk to. There were 4 adults and 3 children and we thought we'd go to pub for a drink and an ice cream for the children, as it was a hot day. The walk took us an hour, but it was well signposted and we didn't have any difficulty finding the pub. We arrived just after 2pm and the pub was reasonably quiet, just a few families finishing off their lunch. We were met by an unfriendly barmaid, who didn't really greet us but took our drinks and snacks order. We enquired about an ice cream for the 3 children, but was told that ice creams were reserved for those dining. We clarified that we only needed three, but were refused. It's a nice pub with a beautiful garden, however with the frosty reception we received I wouldn't be tempted to return.

Fantastic Nut Roast! It is so hard to get a Nut Roast. And to get a delicious one is extremely hard. I am usually offered pasta as a vegetarian option for Sunday lunch in a lot of pubs. So thank you for providing a gorgeous Nut Roast. Quality ingredients very well cooked.

Had lunch here with friends while walking the mid-Sussex border path. I used to drink here many, many years ago and the new pub is, probably, an improvement. It's smart, tastefully, decorated and furnished but still retains atmosphere. It's a gastropub but the service was excellent, the food very good as were the beers. Reasonably priced as well. A pleasant surprise

The Sloop Inn - only 5 minute drive from where I live. First time there and I didn't know what to expect. We went on a Friday for lunch and got there just after half past noon. The place was already more than half full. We sat outside. We thoroughly enjoyed our beer battered skate wing, with chips, tartare sauce and dressed salad leaves. Top quality! We shared an apple, plum and blackberry crumble, with vanilla ice cream. Faultless! Portions were generous and well presented. All the staff, from the young lady taking our orders to the guy at the bar making the drinks to the lady bringing the food (sorry, I can't remember their names) were friendly, helpful and attentive. I will definitely go back and spread the word. Well done and keep up the good work!

What a fabulous, country pub!! We loved it so much we came back a week after our first visit last weekend. After a brilliant Friday night drinking with the locals and playing the traditional, Sussex pub game, Toad in the hole. We decided to book a table and return for dinner on Saturday evening. I can honestly say we had a beautiful meal at the sloop Inn. I cant rate it highly enough. My wife is vegan and my friends partner, vegetarian. They catered for all of us. The food was fabulous. My Monk fish and leek risotto was out of this world. The staff are fantastic too and super 'dog' friendly. We will be back soon with our other friends who I'm sure they will fall in love with the Sloop Inn just like us.

I have always enjoyed visiting this pub and the quality of the food and the wonderful service. However, this pub has recently changed hands and the new owners have ruined the pleasantness and quality of this pub. Having arrived it took quite a while to order a drink and between receiving a menu and having my order taken was over 35 minutes. Poor in my eyes, that’s for sure. Having browsed the menu I thought there was some reasonably nice sounding dishes to offer. Thinking I would try something off the pub classics, I decided to go with the trusted Beef Burger thinking I would be playing it safe. Was I more wrong! There was nothing on the plate worth talking about. Burger was basic and had a door wedge of a poorly chosen mature cheddar. All you could taste was cheddar… To put an example of what the burger was like, it was like taking a hobo, putting him in a suit and top hat, giving them a very fancy title, higher premium and hoping no one notices they are still a hobo underneath. Will not be visiting again anytime soon. Prices went up and the standards went down. Food and service was brilliant all visits before this. Would recommend you look for another place to eat and drink!

Usted no será decepcionado.

After a major revamp and a new kitchen it is good to see The Sloop back in action. Great place on a sunny day with a large and attractive garden well served with seating. We only had a light lunch which was satisfactory without being outstanding with something of an obsession with ciabatta bread not only for all the sandwiches but also in the ploughmans which not only seemed odd ( how many ploughmen went off to work with ciabatta in their lunch I ask) but also expensive at £12. Also it seemed a bit strange to be given a choice between three cheeses which then came in two decent slices - why not give a choice of any two from three cheeses? Hopefully these are still teaching troubles and at least the beer is still good. Give it a try.

10 of us went to this pub for lunch whle staying at wowo camp site. What a lovely location and despite being pricey we were delighted when our food turned up. Some of our party arrived slightly after us and they ordered seperately, by this time the pub was busy and they had to wait an hour!Anyway we all enjoyed our food, 3 of us had mackrel salad. Very soon after, the 3 who had this salad became flushed and short of breath and developed headaches (me, my pregnant g/f and a mother of 2). Shortly after this we were very ill and all had to find a local loo! This went on all afternoon. After I contacted the pub the duty manager was apologetic and said he would get the owner to call me to discuss matters further. The owner called me and basically fobbed me off saying norovirus takes 24 hours to kick in (not sure what this has to do with food poising though?). Anyway I looked on google and found scromboid poising which you get from spoiled fish. This is exactly what we had and fit with the time scales of the 'event'. Anyway, the owner was very abrupt and wouldn't admit they were at fault or offer a refund so we are reporting them to the food standards agency and taking things further. In short - avoid! Please look at my other reviews as I am a fair trip advisor contributor.

On arrival a couple of us had changed our minds but the pub was happy to accommodate this. The food arrived in good time and the portions were spot on for both kids and adults. The meals were really tasty and everyone was happy with their choice. The staff where friendly and attentive and asked us just after we had started eating if everything was okay with the meal. The pub has a lovely garden which is ideal for a summer punk lunch. Highly recommended.

Visited here yesterday for drink whilst we were out walking wit friends. We live locally and have visited The Sloop over a number of years. It has always been a bit up and down but yesterday it hit an all time low in terms of customer service. I ordered half a pint of cider - sadly it tasted like vinegar - the rest of my party tried it and agreed so we took it back only to be told that it was my issue if I didn't like it. When I then spoke to a man who I think said he was the manager he did agree to give me an alternative drink and said that I shouldn't have been told to pay for a replacement. Not sure which one of the smirking teenagers behind him had told my friend that she had to pay for a replacement but they need to have some customer service training and fast! The 'manager' was not apologetic and then tried the cider and said it was fine he appeared to want the last word.We won't be back in a rush.

Half of us had the baguettes - £8 was a bit pricey but two of us shared one between us which still gave us enough food each for £4. The prawn salads were heaped full of prawns and were favourably commented on. You have to fetch your own cutlery which is a bit annoying however the staff were pleasant and made for a relaxed meal. We all agreed that it was just what a traditional pub should be and how quiet the setting was just as a tractor roared by.....i have been before quite a few times and it doesn't disappoint so it was nice to come back and see that the standard has continued to improve over the recent years.

At it's best, you'll struggle to find better. This time last year it was nothing short of fabulous, with roasts to die for. Some time over the autumn or winter the management changed again and its now back to 'at worst'. Mass produced, zapped, cheap cuts, most-punters-only-come-here-once-anyway. Well, good luck with that. It won't be the first time the place will be like a graveyard either side of Sunday lunchtime, and suddenly there's no need to book.

A few more energetic bar staff on sunny Saturdays would help (but that's probably true of most pubs), but the waiting and kitchen teams were brilliant. Amazingly bad experience. I asked for a lager shandy, thought it probably had too much lemonade in it, tasted it and told the barman. I expected him to either make a new one or pour out some and add lager - a rustic approach, but I could cope. He grudgingly topped it up and then told me I should have said before I drank some / tasted it because I was getting free beer !!! Astonishingly rude, What a cretin. We were there with other adults andchildren and I had already paid for the drinks. I putg down a few coins for the "extra" free beer I had somehow cheated my way into and told him not to insult his guests. He told me to leave. I stayed,. Arrived at 12noon and was surprised to see that even though it was very full, there was not enough staff to cope.It took 25-30 mins to get a drink from the bar and I was lucky that I did not buy any food as I know that not only did it take 30mins to order food, people were still waiting when we left 2hrs later. The staff were genuinely surprised that it would be busy on a Bank Holiday Weekend. At one point a local gave up waiting and went round the bar and served himself and other locals promising to settle up later. I would have hard more sympathy but the staff really did not seem to care. My advice is don't go on any day on a Bank Holiday weekend and if you do buy 3 drinks for everyone in the round and bring a packed lunch. Or you could find somewhere else to spend your money.

As others have pointed out this pub is run by the owner of the Kitts campsite. The pub is a 6 or 7 minute walk from the camp site so it is very convenient. The food was ok and quite tastey but we found that the adult portion of curry was very small for an adult portion and as such it was overpriced. The kids portion was a good size but was £7 with no drink or pudding. There was no lighting at all in the garden until we went and asked form them to put one on. This could have been quite dangerous as the garden is a bit ofa mess. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They managed a number of dissatisfied customers very politely. We went in the summer while camping but I have only just remembered to write the review! Lovely setting and garden but the food was abysmal. It was 7 pounds for the children's food which did not include a drink or ice cream. When it arrived it was a small bowl of pasta covered in cream with a few chives sprinkled on top of it- what an amazing mark-up. The ploughman's was 12 pounds for 3 bits of cheese, a bit of lettuce and one slice of stale baguette. When we politely pointed out that the bread was completely stale it was removed with lots of bad grace. The same bit of bread then reappeared from the kitchen having been toasted for a few seconds and was replaced with no apology. It was still stale and inedible.I understand that there is a captive market of non-returning visitors with two campsites nearby, and once people have walked all the way from Wowo's with hungry children they have nowhere else to go, but did we have to be ripped off to quite such an extent? It was supposed to be a nice treat but was really ruined by greedy pricing.

I found everything about The Sloop and Kitts Campsite to be fantastic. James who runs both is a great character and I'm surprised to see any negative reviews about either place because they're both exactly what you would want and expect from a country pub (great food) and campsite (log fires and lovely clean loos). The food in the pub and cost of the campsite are not the cheapest but my reasoning is that this is because of the quality of food and the facilities at the campsite. But why take my word for it because all reviews are mindless - just go and enjoy yourself.

Visited here one Tuesday evening. Had a drink in the garden which was fairly quiet (good choice of ale) and then came indoors to eat. The steak was fabulous- after chatting to the very nice manager, he told us it comes from a farm just up the road. Extremely tasty & cooked to perfection, lovely hand cut chips came with it, and a really tasty butter on top. The price is pretty expensive (I think it was around £17 each for the steak) but for an occasional treat I don't mind paying it. The pub was pretty much empty (we which quite enjoy when we go out!) but we found the manager and the young barmaid/waitress to be very pleasant and helpful. Can't comment on the loos or the rest of the menu as we didn't experience either of these - it's a shame to read some negative reviews of The Sloop lately as it's certainly not how we found it to be.

The children all had Scampi and Chips (off the kids menu), the dads went for the Duck, Chicken and Gnocchi. I was not expecting a grea deal after reading the reviews on here, but the food and service was fine. We arrived at noon and were served our meals very quickly, it did start to get very busy with camping folk around 1.00PM. Great fun watching the visitors from London in their pristine Hunters, Barbour jackets and petulant children failing miserably to muscle in on the tables! According to our waiter, a new chef arrived 3 months ago, and has geared the place up around supporting the local campsite traffic. Overall, pleasantly surprised.

This is my 4th visit and I took along friends as we were all staying nearby. There were 6 adults and 8 children, 4 of whom also ate off the adult menu.Since our last visit, the owner has clearly made changes which sadly do not reflect the needs or wants of it's target audience, but even if it did, the food did not live up to the expectations of the descriptive, expensive and yet very limited menu. As it was so limited we expected it to at least be very good. But no.To give an idea of price - mushroom gnocchi £12, cheese plougmans £12. At a PUB whose main audience on the weekends is from local campsites..Really?The garden was awash with children, yet the menu only has 3 choices at £6 each of chicken nuggets & chips, scampi & chips or creamy pasta. Not great for vegetarian children and if masquerading as a gastro-pub on the adult menu why such unimaginative food at top end prices? My main was beef (grey chewy strips) with chorizo and potatoes swimming in an oily substance. My 2 friends chose cheese ploughmans with just cheddar (not the selection of blue cheeses it came with). When the ploughmans arrived it had blue cheese - it was pointed out to the waitress that this was not correct and she simply lifted the blue cheese off the plate with her hand there and then as if problem solved! They also ordered 4 portions of chips at £3.60 each - these arrived all in one bowl, around the size of a medium pasta bowl (for £15 quid). When we asked to divide the portions into 4 this showed the sizes to be around 8 chips per bowl. At £3.60 each...Again we pointed this out and were told that the reason from the chef was that they were busy. Our friend heard the chef tell the waitress to effective tell us to shut up, this is how it is.What with a hair in another meal and very overcooked chicken in another, it was a truly awful experience. Their card machine for payment also asks for service charge in advance, while you are ordering at the bar yourself. Ludicrous! Our total bill was over £200. The lovely manager tried his very best to appease us, but the owner was nowhere to be seen and clearly does not give his staff either the skills or power to truly serve (including compensation/refund) it's customers in his absence. I will not be returning and will certainly be advising the many friends who regularly used to visit this pub that the changes frankly seem purely profiteering. I can see from other recent reviews that I am not alone. I hope the owner takes note and makes the necessary changes or I fear will be another statistic of restaurants going down the pan.

Not great considering we walked all the way in the rain. Had to get a cab to The Green Man which was much better!!

we arrived at this pub at 13.40 on a sunday after walking from the Bluebell Railway @ Sheffield Park. We ordered some beers & a menu which were supplied.after looking at the 'restricted' menu we asked if they did any 'lighter' food ie ploughmans/sandwiches etc and were then informed that 'there is NO food 'as they had run out !!!!then we asked why we were given a menue-& the excuse was 'we only have 1 chef.food is advertised as 12.00-2.30 but to 'run out' is a very poor excuse,& there were a lot of people being disappointed..ok if they are the lazy ,get in car'go to pub-no food drive somewhere else type but for walkers it was very poor.......

One has to admire the enterprise and skill of a landlord who can run a successful pub in a location that is a couple of miles from any sizeable village. If it wasn't for him this place would very probably have closed like many rural pubs, and the mere fact that it is still there is something for which we, as walkers, are duly grateful. But the means to this worthy end are a mixed bag. Here's how it seems to be done:-Be a free house so that you can offer a range of draught beers - but not too big a range..Offer a sensibly short food menu with generous helpings of pub favourites at slightly higher than average prices, and make sure that you don't spend too much on the ingredients.Run a campsite a few minutes walk away through the woods to provide captive customers.Put a tent in the garden to attract families, but keep undisciplined children out of the bar.Use as few bar staff as possible - preferably young and presentable, but untrained, so cheap - then be around yourself to sort out their mistakes when they get tired and harassed..Make sure that your few local regulars get good service. Be friendly to casual customers, but remember that as most of them won't come back you don't need to bother too much.

Lovely walk from WoWo campsite through the woods. Got a great table outside (we had dogs and children with us) and sheltered out the rain in their big tent. The kids enjoyed the garden, the food was average (apart from the wait which was excessive but they were busy-ish or so they said). What let this down was the loos, specifically the ladies. One was blocked and the other may as well have been. Also, the stench or the sewage tank outside the pub was horrible. I think some maintenance is necessary!

I went there to meet a girlfriend and to eat. I waited at the bar (I am female, presentable but 50ish) and watched the barmaid unload a dishwasher and totally ignore me even though I was the only person waiting to be served. She then filled another tray with glasses and again totally ignored me. Eventually a young man came to serve me, when I asked about ordering food - it was 7.30 - I was told they weren't serving any that evening (a Saturday) as they'd been so busy during the day.I left - never to return!

Seems that yesterday, they decided to abandon the menu for a barbecue. The menu was ill thought, the food was poor value but worst of all none of the staff running the barbecue had any idea how to cope with putting a sausage or a burger in a bun and charging a fiver for it. Vegetarians were extremely disappointed. A member of staff offered mackerel as a veggie option!!They ended up having processed cheese in a bun.

We met at the pub for a girls xmas dinner. The staff were really accomodating as we had people coming and going at different times. They were also super dog friendly, including dog biscuits and water bowls brought to the table. The human food was good. Hopefully the menu will change with the seasons. 🤞

We have known and stayed at Ockenden Manor since 1975. Staff are superb. The catering, however, has now moved into the pretentious category with a menu that is specialised, limited in range and depth and wine list which is a tad removed from normality. Ockenden Manor is lovely but no longer a reasonable restaurant experience.

I visited today with my Dad and son for a last minute lunch. Emily welcomed us warmly at the check in and although we hadn’t booked she found us a table. When I asked about bringing my dog in she explained about the dog friendly area and showed me the doggie station which was well stocked with water bowls, blankets and treats available for a donation to MacMillan. The lunch menu was reasonably priced and the food was delicious. We were so impressed with the service today. Thank you Emily and Angie for looking after us.
