We enjoy visiting this traditional village pub for lunch, it is served by an hourly bus which runs from Brighton to East Grinstead so is easy to reach, and is popular with walkers and cyclists in the summer months, there is plenty of outside seating in the sunny frontage as well as a bar with an open fire and a restaurant area. The food varies from light lunches to pub classics and there is always a specials board, I had an amazing seafood linguine recently. There are deals on certain nights too. We sometimes take the wider family there and the children enjoy the meals. We have always been made to feel very welcome.

This is a delayed review from a meal eaten here mid August. I have now read the more negative reviews on here and can fully agree with the hostile and unpleasant 'lady' who still seems to be there not having improved on her social skills. More importantly though is that they do not have a clue about Allergens. They did not ask on arrival or on seating if any of the group had an allergy. When they were told one had an EGG allergy they did not have a separate allergens menu to refer to or a matrix. Because of this they managed to serve a dish containing EGG (even at the time it was presented a further check was made to ensure there was no EGG) but still an allergy reaction occurred. Then followed a very odd response to this. They had no information at the time to immediately check what had happened or what the specific ingredients were in the dish, were then 'too busy' to respond to my telephone call and email, said they were 'waiting for another delivery of an ingredient to check the packaging and this would come in a few days, then suggested that maybe there was a LACTOSE allergy rather than EGG?! On speaking to Austin, the owner, he admitted he didn't know about the food side of things and left it all to his cook. He said he was a simple publican. It was Austin who served the meal (grumpy woman took the order). I'm only writing this review to make it public so that any other potential diners with allergies bear this in mind - hopefully they have now changed things and there is no further risk. Or that they have stopped serving food altogether.

My wife and I have just had dinner at the Green Man. Surprisingly, having lived in the area for a good few years, we had never been there before. We found a good choice of food to eat, friendly staff, good service and very reasonable prices. We arrived quite early and nearly had the place to ourselves. However, within a short space of time it quickly filled with both diners and drinkers - obviously other people knew more than we did.

I’m part of a local running group, every Friday during the summer months we meet up, do a 4 mile ish run and then dine, a different pub every week This year we have found pubs to be particularly painful to our needs , quite a surprise as we are so easy, we book a table ( or 2 ) turn up at 630 , order food and pay , back for 830 to eat And as there is 15 plus people , we spend a fair amount. I booked a table on Thursday at the Greenman for Friday , they were not fazed at all When we turned up, the landlord and staff knew what to do and no explaining needed We did our run and got back , landlord had a huge rush on and was very apologetic that food would be delayed , not a problem When the food arrived , oh my gosh , for a group of 20 people it all came out within 3 minutes , and that’s to all of us I don’t think I heard one moan out of anyone , well priced and superb cooking Definitely a pub we will return too

We spotted The Green Man pub on the way to our airbnb as we were in the area for Paws in the Park. We left for Sussex at 3am and we’d had a really long day, the takeaway options weren’t for us so we came to this pub. From the moment we walked in the atmosphere was just perfect. A proper traditional pub with such a warm feeling and the staff were so happy, friendly and polite, as well as really helpful. We hadn’t booked so we walked in on the off chance that they may have a table available and they managed to seat us. Nothing was too much trouble and they went above and beyond for us. The only sauce that my mum likes with steak is Diane sauce and they managed to provide this for her. The staff are attentive and genuinely nice people. If I’m in the area again I’ll definitely be coming to this pub again. Thank you all again for a lovely evening.

I really love this pub. It is set back from the road on a mini village green of its own where you can sit and watch the world go by (though not a lot goes by in this quiet village). The Green Man has been our favourite pub to visit for years but COVID19 has put us off going to any such venue. We were delighted to have been back there today for as lovely a meal as ever. The pub is a typical old country pub and used to be a bit scruffy like many are, but during the shutdown redecoration has smartened it up but retained the pubs appeal. Booking while COVID19 precautions are in place might be wise since even at lunch time we were surprised by the good business they were doing (many patrons sitting outside). We can't wait to go back and have already booked!

Good, polite service. Wide range of food and drinks, however, there could be a bit more on the children's menu. It's very accessible 'cause of its patron car park. Inside there is a beautiful garden. There's a lit fire and music welcome. It has quiet music in the background and dogs are welcome. The food came in 23 minutes and was DELICIOUS. The toilets could have been a bit cleaner.

At last, a real pub, serving real pub food in the countryside, with none of this daft gastro-pub stuff and no gastro- pub prices.Staff excellent, service spot on, food super, sensible prices - the other half was so excited to see (and eat) real 'steak and kidney suet puddings'.Absolutely lovely. If you are looking for a frou-frou gastro-pub of the sort reviewed in the Sunday Times Magazine then the Green Man isn't for you. It is an honest-to-goodness Sussex country pub of the kind that we have lost far too many of. A good selection of hand-pumped beers in good condition (I like the Timothy Taylor's 'Landlord'), and an interesting and regularly updated menu of unpretentious but delicious home-cooked food. Portions are generous. I go whenever visiting friends and family down south and have never been disappointed by the warmth of the welcome or the quality of the food and drink. It's at least a couple of hundred years old and has character in abundance. The fact that it's nearly always busy with locals (and their dogs) says a lot. Highly recommended.

We came across this pub by accident. We had a very warm welcome from the staff, menus were quickly produced and drinks ordered. We were a party of four, we ordered two ploughman’s, a smoked salmon and cream cheese baguette which came with chips and salad, a warm cranberry Camembert with bread and salad. The food was faultless, huge portions, well presented. My father in law votes it the best ploughman's he’s ever had (he’s 83 and had quite a few over the years!). For the amount and quality of food we had, the prices are exceptionally good value. We will definitely return. Thank you!

The Green Man is lovely pub on the village green. It serves three ales which usually includes a guest ale. There is a wide range of lagers on offer. We went on the Thursday steak night. The offer is half a bottle of wine per person with your steak. The pub was busy on arrival but service was handled efficiently. But the most important aspect were the steaks. They didn’t disappoint. Properly cooked and extremely tasty. They came with chips, onion rings, mushrooms and tomatoes. A lovely meal in a lovely pub.

6 of us plus a toddler visited yesterday after a ride on the nearby Bluebell Railway. We rang to book but they could not fit us in at the time requested. We were delighted when they rang back to say they did have space. We had excellent meals - roasts and pies - although sadly the fish pie had already sold out. An added bonus was the music provided by an excellent blues musician - not the usual rather dubious standard that is offered in so many pubs. We would highly recommend and hope to go back when we are next in the area.

Dined here on two evenings with friends from Belgium and France who love all things English. All of us enjoyed Timothy Taylor's Landlord Ale (from Keighley), fish 'n' chips, steak and ale pies, salmon -- not a crumb left over. Friendly landlord, staff and customers (one of who brought a very cute dachshund that everyone petted). Could sit outside and enjoy the evening sunshine before adjourning indoors for food and drink and good company. Not tarted up, not "artificial" in any way -- just a good, proper pub. Thanks to everyone there for giving us two memorable evenings.

Booked a table for 6 for lunch after visiting the Bluebell Railway. It's about a 20 min walk from Horsted Keynes station but as some clown had turned the signpost around we ended up on the wrong road and took nearly an hour. No phone signal so could't contact the pub. Not a problem when we arrived even though we were right at the end (or perhaps after) the advertised end of lunch serving time. Friendly welcome, goos service, nice old village pub - not at all pretentious. We went to the Green Man and had a roast lunch. It arrived quickly and was tasty but, on top of my meat was something which looked metallic. I picked it off and carried on eating. When the waitress came out, I pointed out the strange addition to my meal. She picked it up and said 'oh it looks like paint' and the flicked it away. I was shocked and asked her to tell the kitchen. At no point did anyone else come out and apologise or even let us know what it was. Certainly wont be going there again. Customer service was terrible - and we were the first people there so it was not busy.

This was found without any planning. We were looking for a reasonable meal before the start of the journey home. The setting of the place is true old England, located by the village green and awat from the main road. The pub is light and airy with a pleasant ambience. The menu seemed fairly generic with a hint of some special treatment to the food. It took slightly longer than expected but was well worth the wait. It was well prepared and well served with some special touches to make it something special. This was to the point where I did ask for our appreciation to be passed on.There were three of us in the group and we all chose different meals, sampling each other's choices. The praise was across the board.

This wasn't the place for a gourmet meal, but we enjoyed simple pub food, with good sized portions and friendly service. This is a traditional village pub in the heart of a lovely village.

We live locally and used to visit this pub quite regularly but stopped a few years ago because the management changed and things declined. That's the trouble with brewery-owned pubs.....they are only as good as the chef and the service and the amount of sweat the landlord/lady is prepared to put in to try and make a crust after the brewery has taken it's [very large] cut. We'd heard some good reviews recently. Unfortunately we arrived just after a group of 40 campers. It was hectic behind the bar and we waited 40 minutes for our food. Fishcakes were superb. Shepherd's pie pretty grim - 80% mash and the filling just tasted of brown sauce which I hate...We'll give it another try though

Good wholesome food at sensible prices, great selection on menu and specials board, good beer, and they put us with us every Wednesday evening! A village pub, but visitors always made to feel welcome.

Went for Sunday lunch. Nice old fashioned country pub. My partner had the homemade steak and kidney pudding with veg. The veg was uncooked the meat had a funny taste and made her Unwell later in the evening. Staff didn't even ask if it was a nice meal

We went there for a pub supper. The menu is mostly traditional pub fare - steak and ale pie, steaks, fish and chips, sausages and mash. These come in large portions with good fat chips (though we also saw some of the dreaded 'French fries'). The starters were listed as 'light bites' and were fairly substantial in their own right, as well as being a little more adventurous. We had some excellent baked camembert and a large flat mushroom baked with stilton and goats cheese. The beer included Abbot Ale and Timothy Taylor. The latter tasted fresher but both are good beers.Overall, a good place for traditional and substantial pub food. It's not where you would go for for haute cuisine and fine wines.

This pub is not ostentatious, but a good clean reasonably priced place to eat. Food is homemade and freshly cooked, well presented and served by friendly helpful staff. Good range of beers, including 'guest beers' and a regular change to the specials menu board.

I don't live in Horsted Keynes but I'd like to and, if I did, The Green Man would most certainly become my local. But then I appreciate the whole "country pub" experience (think roaring fires, wagging tails, welcoming local folk). My husband, mother and I ate there recently, with dog, and can recommend the pie du jour, bacon & brie baguette and vegetarian lasagne. The pub was incredibly busy but the service was polite, efficient and as prompt as any other popular pub on a Sunday lunchtime. A fine, traditional establishment.

What a gorgeous English pub. Great food, good prices, warm and snug and friendly on a cold January night. Loved the dogs we meet their with their equally lovely owners. Brilliant for dinner, oxtail stew to die for.

We visited for a pre walk lunch. Having been to The Crown across the road before we decided to see what the Green Man had to offer. The food was reasonable with generous portions. The service leaves something to be desired. There was no warm welcome and the majority of the customers were clearly locals in for a few lunch time pints. If all you want is something to eat then the food, on its own, is alright.. If you want a friendly atmosphere without a thousand yard stare from a local then I'd suggest forking out a bit more and going across the road.

The Green Man is a truly traditional country pub. Unfortunately these are closing across Britain due to high rents from breweries and being replaced by gastro pubs that seem to serve beer as a side line. The Green Man is a pub in the true sense of the word; a place to chat and socialise, enjoy good beer next to a roaring log fire [in winter of course] and eat simple pub food. It doesn't pretend to prepare gourmet food, but simple pub grub. These places are becoming rare and if genuine pubs like this are to survive, the great British "public" need to support them.

Lured in by an old CTC winged wheels placard on the outside of the building (a 1800s precurser to the AA * rating and awards system for good inns and hotels), we were not disappointed. We arrived just 5 minutes before the pub was due to stop serving food and the staff came out as we settled at a table in the sunny front garden, to make sure we didn't miss out, without making us feel rushed. The food was everything we had hoped for and was served quickly. The Green Man has a great bar stocked with some fine ales and a nice big open fire place, wihch would have been lovely had the weather been inclement.

Of course another pub lunch is what you do in England. Thus was our second visit to Greenman with the family. We were arriving Kate for lunch but service was still good and all items on menu available. Had the seaside pie which wad tasty but a bit dry, ploughman's gad a nice variety but needed better selection of cheese. Last years ploughman was better. Perhaps a change in some cheese selection and a thicker slice of gam would be better. Desserts were good value and tasty.

Went for a meal with a friend on a week day evening. There were only a handful of other people there, but the meal still took quite some time to arrive. The food itself was fine, but nothing spectacular. The plates were cleared promptly and we finished our drinks soon after - it was still early, before 9pm but the place was deserted. Literally. We stood at the bar waiting to pay for a good 5 minutes before someone eventually arrived without apology or explanation.I should perhaps mention that my parents have had lunch here two or three times and have never had a problem with the service so perhaps we were unlucky, but it was enough to put me off a return visit.

My coffee experience failed at the first hurdle. £4.95 for a flat white. A coffee that could be "enjoyed" over looking a dusty car park, or from a hard looking interior with no atmosphere whatsoever. This is just nonsense. From two previous experiences I had looked forward to sitting on the balcony overlooking the vineyard. What a let down. I believe it is a legal requirement for traders to display prices. Then is none on show for consumers to make an informed decision.

The witch is a lovely pub with good food and great staff. I celebrated my birthday there recently. Everyone was very welcoming and patient, with 17 of us procrastinating over what to have. There were some nice vegan options for myself and my partner and everyone enjoyed there meals. 5 stars 🌟

Popped in here for a bacon and sausage baguette. Was very disappointed in the baguette. I expected more in it for the money I paid. Which with a coke was over 7 pound and all I got was 1 sausage and one and a bit rasher of bacon. Not value for money in my opinion.

Just paid £4.40 for a pint of apple juice poured straight from the carton. When enquired further I was told in a one word answer inflation from the bar keep. After a second look at the menu apple juice doesn't have a price nor labeled on the menu. Just make sure you enquire the price before ordering anything.
