The Plough at Pyecombe in Mid Sussex

Booked a table with dogs for Sunday Lunch. We were told we would have to sit outside which is what it is. On arrival we went into the pub and were shown to our table out back. Waiter was friendly but didn’t explain we would have to order inside. Basically if you have dogs or just fancy sitting outside, you have to order everything in the bar. The doors at the back were locked so it means going around the side of the pub into the front - you can’t miss the front door, it has a huge NO DOGS sign. Shortly after ordering our food, the waitress came out with the card machine and asked for payment. This is before the food even arrives at the table. Perhaps they have a problem with people running off but upfront payment without even seeing (never mind eating) our food is ridiculous. I really don’t understand their anti dog policy in this day and age, it wouldn’t have been our choice given this but location wise it worked for a family meet-up from various corners of the South East. The staff were pleasant enough and the food was good. The service and upfront payment was really unwelcome though!

We were welcomed like regulars, the food was really yummy and we were super full afterwards. Thanks guys, we had a great time.

Very rude staff type person. He was talking about us and our eccentric friend whom we look after, in plain sight and loudly in front of us. We were hungry but not offered a menu. Had to go find it myself. But when we were stared at like we had leprosy or similar we decided to leave the unprofessional establishment where they obviously are only interested in a certain type of rich people (ironic really we are).. we would've spent a lot!. Red wine is not good either. No full bodied available but the watery, weak stuff cost too much.. never again and will let friends know to swerve this place. After a journey ppl certainly deserve better.

Staff very friendly and helpful, lovely place and nice atmosphere. Food was alright but not great. We had the Lamb Shank and Roast Beef Sunday roasts. We do like our vegetables cooked 'Al dente', however the broccoli and cauliflower on the plate were bordering on raw (the side of cauliflower cheese was cooked perfectly, though), the Roast Beef was quite sinewy and hard to both cut and chew. The roast potatoes were well cooked, fluffy in the middle and crispy on the outside. Grandkids said they enjoyed their chicken nuggets and chips. Having read previous reviews I've noticed The Plough Pyecombe (owner) only seems to respond to customers who give them a 5* rating, thanking them and welcoming them back again.🤔🤔🤔

Really lovely place to eat, compliments to the chef as the food is always delicious, have tried most things on the menu now. Staff are really friendly, great atmosphere and good value for money. Big thanks Michael, Gino and Whalid for their perfect service every time we come ☺️ 10/10 always!

Exceptional customer service, very attentive over allergies, friendly and professional. Great food (Burger and fries £17) and nice atmosphere. Restaurant was on the cool side but I can imagine that in the summer it is lovely.

Outstanding Service and Incredible Staff! I recently visited The Plough in Pyecombe and was genuinely blown away by the service. The staff were absolutely fantastic—fast, friendly, and incredibly welcoming from the moment we walked in. Nothing was too much trouble; they really went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and looked after. I’ve already told all my friends they have to visit. It’s rare to come across a team this dedicated and genuinely lovely. The Plough has some of the best hospitality I’ve experienced—full credit to the amazing staff!

Second visit, this time on a Monday evening. The Plough was neither busy nor empty. My brother and I both had delicious starters and main and, had no room for dessert. We'll just have to go back again for that. I went 'Asian' with my choice and can say the chef really understands spicing food to get the best out of it. See you again!

Found this place as travelling by. What a surprise! Excellent food. We ordered Lamb burger, Asian Porkbelly and Foccacia. Would highly recommend for lunch or dinner.

We were recommended a visit to the plough by a local b&b owner. We booked a table online which was very convenient, arrived on time and were seated by staff promptly. Service was great, menu and food was good and they even serve spitfire one of my favourite pub draughts. Good value for money. Wasn’t sure about deserts as couldn’t see a menu anywhere but we also didn’t ask as we had run out of time due to other plans.

Pork belly roasts superb. Spiced lamb burger great but needed salad garnish. Kids meals ample and excellent. Service brilliant.

You can go wrong having a meal here food is good service is amazing and everyone just really enjoys themselves here

Amazing food and great customer service

We regularly go here en route to the ferry port. Great service. Always friendly staff. Varied menu with something for everybody, generally simple but done well Highly recommended. Get there by 8 pm to order food.

I had a very good meal here on a Monday. Quite quiet but a good choice on the menu. I couldn't find fault with anything, although maybe it was a bit expensive, but as I do not eat out very often I am not the right person to judge this. My friend and I spent a very enjoyable couple of hours here.

This place is becoming a favourite for a Sunday lunch. Reliable good food, generous portions , friendly staff. What's not to like !

Stated dogs aloud on google when arrived here after driving 20miles it says no dogs aloud, I wouldn’t bother returning due to this, complete waste of time

Very nice Sunday roast, quick service and convenient location with a car park.

Sunday lunch was nice. Vegan mushroom risotto bland unfortunately. Door slamming drove us mad on a windy day sat not far from the entrance, unfortunately. Really lovely staff who were very helpful and put the heating on due to our elderly guests. Atmosphere was a bit overwhelming with some really noisy conversations nearby that were not really what we wanted to listen to.

Absolutely lovely and quaint pub. I called 10 minutes before arriving with hope they’d be able to cater to 10 people and a baby - they were great and welcomed us immediately and had prepared a table so quickly. The staff were very helpful and attentive and we all enjoyed some amazing Sunday roasts and other foods.

The food was absolutely beautiful the highlight being the squid starter. The chef clearly takes pride in the flavour and presentation of the meals. The service was very good and we did not have to wait long for anything. Highly recommend

Had a lovely lunch here recently to try out the menu for a family meal later in the year. The food was amazing, the service was great and the venue itself has a lovely and cosy atmosphere. We'll definitely be here again.

The lamb shank was very good, sausage and mash also good but could do with a bigger portion of mashed potato. I would come again, but I think the service needs to be improved. Nice, polite young man, but not conscientious about the details. Maybe that's because the service charge is already added?

We popped in for a quick early dinner and were not disappointed. We all chose something different and the food was very homemade, fresh, hot and delicious. Chicken pie was exceptional. Great front of house staff, very friendly and attentive. We will return again in the new year. Thank you to a great team.

I found this restaurant by chance after taking a wrong turn! The staff was very friendly and the food was really delicious.

Excellent pizza and desserts, really good menu and specials, light and airy and friendly service. I drunkenly wrote a review for the Plough on TripAdvisor about 10 years ago, stating they serve the best pizza I've ever had in the UK which was a pretty bold statement, however the pizza is very very good, with quality ingredients and beautifully cooked.

A nice atmosphere in a historic pub. The publican was informative of the age and history of the premises, I should add also very attentive of our needs and happiness with service and quality of food. A very tasty roast and good menu opotions. Well worth a visit.

Great chef, loved the food taste and presentation was excellent, 5 stars to too kitchen team! Professional and friendly service, great ambience with the large conservatory seating so we could enjoy the autumnal sunshine. Would definitely visit again!

My review has changed due to the poor service experienced in October 2024. It's a shame as when we came last year and it was a lovely experience. It seems they have employed young staff who don't seem to want to be there and don't make you feel welcome. They really don't cater for children either as no paper or colouring pencils were offered. All they have are signs saying all children must stay seated. If that doesn't spell, we don't want kids here, I don't know what does. As we came in our table was not ready and had to wait. We were then not given any menus and had to look online ourselves. After waiting for an hour to be served, the waitress refused to take our food order at the same time as our drinks order. I've never not been able to do this at any pubs. This place has really gone downhill and we won't be returning.

Tasty tasty and plentiful portions. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole dining experience with welcoming approach to their clientele. Well worth the money and will go back. Thank you team Plough.

Had a really good lunch here - they have some mains at only £10 Monday to Friday lunchtimes. Wide choice of dishes and plenty for veggies too. Staff very helpful, service was just right - prompt but at the same time you don’t feel at all rushed.

What can I say? So far my favorite place for a Sunday roast has always been The Bristol Bar in Kemptown (which is always exceptional). So what a delight to find this place in Pyecombe. Me and my girlfriend came here today for a Sunday roast. What a lovely pub. And the amazing staff (big shout out to the wonderful Alyssia who was just delightful and very friendly). The lamb roast was delicious. Pretty much every thing was perfect. I would 100% recommend this place and we will definitely be going back for more. 10/10 for everything and a huge thank you to the wonderful staff.

Took our friends here whilst they were visiting from out of town. Unfortunately the food was average and the service was non existent. On arrival it felt like we were forgotten about. We did not get given menus and had to ask after waiting for 10 minutes. Tables arriving after us were served first. We waited over an hour for our mains. Roast came with 2 tiny carrots and the cauliflower cheese was awful. Beef and roasties were ok. Not once did we get an update or have an apology for delay. Got given half of a portion of a side and they attempted to charge full amount - only when questioned did it get adjusted on the final bill. Unfortunately we will not be returning.

I am absolutely furious with the experience we had today at The Plough. My friends and I came in excited for a roast, but what we got was a complete disaster. When we arrived, it was busy, and we were seated at a table that was clearly too small for four people. We couldn’t even sit comfortably without bumping into each other, so we asked to be moved. They accommodated us by moving us to a table in the corner, but apparently that meant forgetting about us entirely. We sat there for ages without menus while watching another family get seated, handed menus, and have their drinks order taken immediately. Fine, we thought, we'll wait. But after 15 more minutes, it was clear we had been completely overlooked. We had to ask for the menus and only then did they take our drinks order. Finally, the drinks came, and we placed our order, only to be told they were out of most of what we wanted, including cauliflower cheese. There was just one portion of pigs in blankets left, and we settled for that. As if the slow service wasn’t bad enough, we then watched the family next to us get served all their food before we had received our starters! By this time, we were starving since it was already past 3 PM, and we hadn’t eaten much all day. The starters were pretty decent, and they cleared our plates, but then we were left waiting for another hour for the mains. When we finally asked if our food was coming, the waitress acted completely flustered, muttering a weak “yes” before disappearing. Another 15 minutes passed without any explanation or apology for the delay. Clearly, we had been forgotten again. When the food finally arrived, the steak came with a congealed sauce that had obviously been sitting out for far too long. Then, the roasts came with the most b-tech, watery, sad excuse for cauliflower cheese, which was ironic since we were originally told they didn’t have any. The pigs in blankets? Two sad little sausages on an abnormally large plate when we were expecting three. We asked the waitress about this, and she lazily admitted that “there usually are three” before walking off with them, only to come back and tell us there were no more left. We had to haggle the price down for this! At this point, we just wanted to eat, so we dug in. I asked for four portions of cranberry sauce and got one. By the time I could’ve asked for more, I was too hungry and had already eaten most of my meal. The food itself was atrociously whelming. Not bad, but certainly not great. The beef was alright, the Yorkshire was fine, and my two potatoes were decent. But the size of the two chunks of carrots were laughable. A broccoli stem that was nearly impossible to cut with the dull knives we were given. Trying to cut into it sent my cauliflower cheese flying onto the floor, and thus ended up with gravy all over my shorts. When we received the bill they tried to charge us for the full portion of pigs in blankets. Overall, the entire experience was nothing short of disappointing, and I left feeling absolutely frustrated. This level of service and food quality is unacceptable. I will not be returning.

Went for Sunday lunch straight after a long walk around devils dyke, and I can say it definitely did the job. Food was great and a special should out to the gravy and especially the massive Yorkshire puddings which were excellent.

Myself and my son visited, I set up a tab for food but we visited the bar to collect the drinks ourselves. Later found out that put the service charge on drinks as well. Won't be going back.

Both my wife and I had the Sunday roast. I had the pork belly and my wife had the turkey and it was hands down the best Sunday roast we have ever had. Every single element was delicious with so much flavour!!

What a lovely place! Driven past here loads and always wanted to pop in. So decided to come here today and was not disappointed! Service was great, the ladies were lovely. Food was fantastic. Had the veggie burger with was mozzarella stick with pesto and salad and it was so tasty. The rest of the family really enjoyed their food. Would definitely come here again.

Food is beautiful here, medium priced but very special and staff are always friendly. I always come here for the Curried Risotto......delicious.

Had a nice Sunday roast the lamb

Went for a Sunday roast .. decided to have nachos to start whilst eatting the nachos which we had only been given 5 mins prior .. our roasts turned up which is obviously frustrating. Roast beef was extremely chewy! After we finished eating we was waiting and waiting nothing so I took myself up to the bar to settle the bill. Once I had paid I looked at the receipt and noticed I have been charged a service fee ? Without the choice I wouldn’t normally mind however the service just wasn’t there. Also was made to feel very uncomfortable whilst there the atmosphere was just off. I won’t be returning

The staff were so welcoming and friendly. I was about 2/3rds through a 24km hike with my camping gear and they totally took me arriving with all my gear in their stride. They let me sit in the bar bit so i had room for my pack, wheras people normally sit round the back for food. Had a lovely bbq chicken and the fries were great. A welcome rest .

Came here whilst walking the south downs way with my wife. The food here is great and seems to be a busy local favourite even on a week day. They had the summer bbq I had the lamb whilst my wife had the chicken both were really good, they also had a good selection of beers and friendly staff. Would definitely recommend!!

Arrived at the pub lovely looking pub with a friend service was good food. Very disappointing. Lamb shank clearly a boil in the bag lamb shank. I ordered the spicy prawns a chef myself. Was surprised to find that the prawns still had the shells on it, pasta undercoat the sauce was basically cream and what can only describe as ketchup. Meant to be spicy. Tasteless. No seasoning really need to think about there approach to serving good food never to return.

Just had another amazing roast dinner. Even though it was Fathers Day and super busy there were no delays to food or drinks and the staff are all super polite and friendly. Love this place.

The Plough Alway has great food, service and very friendly staff. Take outs are brilliant too so it’s become our go to! Also very handy to get to by car or walking ( great walks connecting)

The food was great and we had the BBQ menu to choose from which provided some different choices. Kids had a child's meal that was more than enough to fill them up. Great pub for a meal.

Visited the restaurant on bank holiday Monday,and I have to say that the venue was okay,but when it came to the lunch it was so disappointing,I decided to have the fish and chips,well the fish looked like it had been cooked in an air fryer it’s was hard and the chips well if you like skinny chips that were also hard,why don’t they do proper chips,it’s not as if the food is cheap because it’s not,don’t think I’ll be bothering again. ,

Came for our wedding anniversary choosing here as we've had some enjoyable meals previously. What we like about The Plough is there is a nice range of dishes. Once again there was wonderful food and attentive, knowledgeable, polite service. Atmosphere is what you would expect from a bar restaurant, lively, but friendly. We opted for the Spicy Penne+Prawns, Seabass, Lamb Shank and Curry Risotto. All four of us agreed our meals were delicious. £116 inc service for the mains plus a round of drinks.

The place was Amazing . and had really nice staff was really kind especially the lady who gave me extra mints food was amazing pink lemonade an absolute must have 😋 I would definitely pay a visit to this amazing restaurant

Lived around Brighton for 25 years and never been here... Exceptional.. Very friendly welcome. Great menu with something for everyone. Service was great, the portions are generous and delicious. We've been twice now. The Sunday roast was exceptional as well.

Always met with friendly staff, and the roast dinners are pretty dam good.

Nice food generally, but the ice-cream I ordered had a gritty texture so was either not made properly or kept at inconsistent temperature. Service wasn't overly attentive either but maybe the large birthday party taking up about six other tables at the time could account for that. So, OK but not five stars. (Be aware that there is not all that much parking space available.)

First visit - table of 6. Food was good, but a bit of a wait for desserts -bit of a mix up in the kitchen. However redeemed themselves by deducting 2 pudding cost from bill without us suggesting any remedy (and we probably would not have done) Will come again !!

Stopped off for an impromptu Sunday lunch and it was fabulous. Good value, plenty of well cooked food at a reasonable price. Nice atmosphere around.

Food, iv had better sunday roast. Specially for the price it was. Service was good.. people serving where very good and very friendly. But between dishes would take a long to to be served to be able to order the desert ect. Atmosphere was OK. But can be two loud.

We decided to go here at short notice and they reserved a lovely table in the corner for us. The chefs made sure our requests for food were met (gravy in a pot for the littlen & extra roasties instead of tonnes of veg) the veg was a little on the harder side, potato's were lovely and so was the pork belly & yorkies. The service was intermitted and slow but they had some very loud parties of people in there which dampend the amphosphre for us personally, we couldn't really have a conversation together without raising our voices, (this is not the pubs fault). The desserts were delicious. It was worth the wait in terms of ordering them, once ordered everything came nice and quickly and it was just delicious. (Banoffee pie & brownie). The ice cream.was probably up there with one of the best we've had to be fair. I personally would not go back purely because of how loud it was & having daughter who struggles in very loud enviourments.. the staff was friendly and smiley & it was an okay roast. But the price was High in total for 1 kids roast, 2 adult roast 3 puds & 3 drinks. We paid a total of £95. So I would of preferred to have a quiter, calmer experince with fast front of house service.

Thank you for a fantastic Mother's Day 3 course lunch, the food and service were of the highest standard and such a nice light area to sit in and enjoy the views of the South Downs around us, it has added to a very special day for me

Walked across south downs for lunch. Great gourmet pub with a good choice on the menu. The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating. Walker friendly.

Just such a relaxed pub, great atmosphere, had a few pints of local beer, some sticky ribs in homemade sauce and listened to a couple of blokes chatting about vintage aircraft. Its our favourite place.
