Freshly made food quiet and a very nice atmosphire. Lots of gifts and trinkets and the staff were very interesting to talk to. Apparently there are tables and chairs outside and you can watch the lambs.

I have visited on a Friday evening with a friend. The food was great, service fast an efficient. Only downside to our dinner was the fact we have been sat in a small room with lights everywhere (spot lights, chandelier and wall lights) which was an atmosphere killer. We have enquired about dimming or turning some off, which was not possible (all on one circuit), we were not offered to be relocated into an area of the pub with less lights and more atmosphere.

Great traditional local pub with great ales in a lovely village location. Food was excellent and the menu choices ample. Well recommended.

Congratulations is in order here, to be in CAMRA Good Beer Guide is a badge of honour, This is one pub that deserves it as the beers are always Tip Top Condition. As a fairly regular customer here ive seen the growth of Ale drinkers coming into the pub, and always great comments on the condition of the Ale, also always a fantastic selection to be sampled. Bottoms Up Steve and Staff, well deserved Coach And Horses.

Having fantastic reviews in The Basingstoke Gazette as ‘The Mutton one of the best pubs for a roast in England’, our group of 5 friends booked for Sunday lunch. We all ordered the Sunday roast which was either beef, lamb or vegetarian. Other items were available on the menu but traditionally on Sundays a roast always ‘fits the bill’. I would however have liked the option of chicken as not everyone likes to eat red meat or a non-meat alternative. Cooking three meats is no greater a task than cooking two by professional chefs surely? Our plates were delivered in due course, but I was disappointed as the Yorkshire pudding was somewhat overcooked for my liking and not crisp, also I would have liked another slice of meat for the price. A bowl of steaming vegetables (red cabbage, carrots and green cabbage) looked fresh and inviting. Followed by a bowl of roast potatoes and two small jugs of gravy. We asked for plenty of horseradish sauce for the table but had to request again as the first was only enough for one person. The roast was alright but nothing outstanding or special and we had to ask for another bowl of green cabbage as there was simply not enough for the table of our size. We received another standard bowl of red cabbage, carrots and green cabbage, so subsequently only the green cabbage was consumed. I did note a table of two received the same quantity of potatoes and vegetables as we did for a table for 5 but we were charged extra for vegetables we didn’t request. I was not responsible for sorting the bill and didn’t know until afterwards. Another jug or larger jugs of gravy to accommodate the number of guests should also have been taken into consideration as again not enough for the size of our table. One size does not fit all in this case. A few in our party including myself said the potatoes were bland, not seasoned correctly and were not homemade but tasted as from a frozen catering bag for convenience’s sake. A couple of desserts were ordered which were nice. The bill was expensive for the quality and quantity including the drinks. Table water was requested and then we had to ask for ice and only a small cup size portion was provided. The pub itself was very cosy, a bit too warm in my opinion and heaving full of customers which was just a little tight for comfort and felt squeezed with bottoms on seats! The power of publicity is what made us venture to The Mutton anyway and no doubt other guests too. Outside the weather was wild, but on arrival there was no disabled parking spaces, so we had to walk through the car park covered in wet leaves which is hazardous and simply dangerous to everyone let alone physically disabled customers. Understandably, cleaning up constantly falling leaves is a huge task itself, but the health and safety of customers should be paramount and is the full responsibility of the venue. Allotted disabled bays are simply a ‘paint job’ and expected so spending x, y & z on internal renovations should not distract from external facilities to be considered also. Would I/we visit again? No plans to in the future but not saying never. We dine out a lot and have had better quality and quantity of Sunday lunches in various public houses in the close vicinity of which are far better value. Good luck nevertheless to The Mutton and thank you to the lovely hosting and waiting staff who were all fantastic.

Good sized car park at the back. Plenty of room inside. Good staff and service. The sharing platter is generous and the carrot cake is amazing.

I’ve been coming to Tylney since 2010 for special occasions such as birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries etc. sadly it’s gradually gone down hill and this will possibly be my last visit. I dined at the oak room this week and when the menu was put in front of me i had no idea what to order. The menu was outdated, stuffy and very overpriced. Long gone are the days where you sat in the library, had your amuse-bouch and marvelled at what to order. Your order was taken prior to your arrival at the oak room and your wine was waiting at your table for your arrival. I ended up ordering by eliminating either incredibly boring options like soup and ludicrously expensive ones like £47 Dover sole. I had the whipped goats cheese starter and the pork main. The food tasted nice but it really was nothing special. The menu was just lacking in creativity and provenance. Back in the day you’d walk in the oak room and there was live piano, candles on the table and the silver cloche covered your food and was beautifully removed when the dish was in front of you. All these details made the extra cost worth it. When you pair it all back sadly it’s just not worth it anymore. I know places like Tylney are incredibly expensive to run so some adjustments have to be made but these are the things that made it special and kept us coming back over the years. Places like The Pig have left Tylney behind. Perhaps it’s time to rethink the French menu for something with provenance, after all Hampshire is a rich county. Back in the heyday of Tylney Hall 20-30 years ago, I appreciate that English food and wine wasn’t as well known or at the level it is at today but it would perhaps be more imaginative, creative and attract more guests if the menu was adapted to be the ‘best of British’ - including all of the wonderful food that Hampshire and neighbouring counties can offer (including the wine!). Back in the 1990s this sort of traditional French menu felt exciting but by today’s culinary standards it is bland and mediocre. On this visit we also found out that the old snooker table is gone. It broke and it was taken away, never fixed. This is incredibly sad as it was a family tradition to have a game of snooker after dinner in a room which was full of history.

I'm a frequent customer. It's a great cafe but for the love of god, please do something about the banging entrance door!

Have been here a few times and have always enjoyed this but found the last visit quite unpleasant due to the front of house reception, unclear if this was the manager. Great selection of antiques and the cafe is also lovely so would still recommend visiting but this has been greatly let down by this staff member. We were ignored for several minutes with no apology and she gave the impression we weren’t the right cliental to be there. We were informed we had to carry down a heavy item of furniture from the top floor, we reluctantly agreed but I would question the health and safety of this and did not have to do this before.

Today we took our Grandchildren to the Halloween party at the Elvetham Hotel. It was absolutely amazing. On arrival we were welcomed by the lovely friendly staff. The pumpkin game outside was fun. The disco and games inside had all the children ( and parents ) joining in with lots of dancing and singing. Arriving to the Conservatory the tables were set up with every Halloween character possible with live singing . The home made cakes were fantastic and so tasty. BBQ outside was scrumptious. Tea / coffee and even hot chocolate with help yourself sweet table with pouches. Gift bags on arrival and gift bags with colouring books and pencils. Our Grandchildren did not want to go home . Thank you so much , please do it again next year .
