Congratulations is in order here, to be in CAMRA Good Beer Guide is a badge of honour, This is one pub that deserves it as the beers are always Tip Top Condition. As a fairly regular customer here ive seen the growth of Ale drinkers coming into the pub, and always great comments on the condition of the Ale, also always a fantastic selection to be sampled. Bottoms Up Steve and Staff, well deserved Coach And Horses.

Having fantastic reviews in The Basingstoke Gazette as ‘The Mutton one of the best pubs for a roast in England’, our group of 5 friends booked for Sunday lunch. We all ordered the Sunday roast which was either beef, lamb or vegetarian. Other items were available on the menu but traditionally on Sundays a roast always ‘fits the bill’. I would however have liked the option of chicken as not everyone likes to eat red meat or a non-meat alternative. Cooking three meats is no greater a task than cooking two by professional chefs surely? Our plates were delivered in due course, but I was disappointed as the Yorkshire pudding was somewhat overcooked for my liking and not crisp, also I would have liked another slice of meat for the price. A bowl of steaming vegetables (red cabbage, carrots and green cabbage) looked fresh and inviting. Followed by a bowl of roast potatoes and two small jugs of gravy. We asked for plenty of horseradish sauce for the table but had to request again as the first was only enough for one person. The roast was alright but nothing outstanding or special and we had to ask for another bowl of green cabbage as there was simply not enough for the table of our size. We received another standard bowl of red cabbage, carrots and green cabbage, so subsequently only the green cabbage was consumed. I did note a table of two received the same quantity of potatoes and vegetables as we did for a table for 5 but we were charged extra for vegetables we didn’t request. I was not responsible for sorting the bill and didn’t know until afterwards. Another jug or larger jugs of gravy to accommodate the number of guests should also have been taken into consideration as again not enough for the size of our table. One size does not fit all in this case. A few in our party including myself said the potatoes were bland, not seasoned correctly and were not homemade but tasted as from a frozen catering bag for convenience’s sake. A couple of desserts were ordered which were nice. The bill was expensive for the quality and quantity including the drinks. Table water was requested and then we had to ask for ice and only a small cup size portion was provided. The pub itself was very cosy, a bit too warm in my opinion and heaving full of customers which was just a little tight for comfort and felt squeezed with bottoms on seats! The power of publicity is what made us venture to The Mutton anyway and no doubt other guests too. Outside the weather was wild, but on arrival there was no disabled parking spaces, so we had to walk through the car park covered in wet leaves which is hazardous and simply dangerous to everyone let alone physically disabled customers. Understandably, cleaning up constantly falling leaves is a huge task itself, but the health and safety of customers should be paramount and is the full responsibility of the venue. Allotted disabled bays are simply a ‘paint job’ and expected so spending x, y & z on internal renovations should not distract from external facilities to be considered also. Would I/we visit again? No plans to in the future but not saying never. We dine out a lot and have had better quality and quantity of Sunday lunches in various public houses in the close vicinity of which are far better value. Good luck nevertheless to The Mutton and thank you to the lovely hosting and waiting staff who were all fantastic.

Excellent food and service in a fabulous location. Staff are fantastic and the menu full of a wide choice of food for all tastes and occasions. The wine list is very extensive too. Overall an excellent dining experience and one myself and wife will repeat for sure.

Dropped in over the weekend when I was out for a walk as I’ve been meaning to try this place for a while. I’ll be honest, I’m shocked this place has a 5 star hygiene rating. My mug was stained, my cutlery hadn’t been washed properly and the place in general wasn’t very clean. I used to work in a cafe so I know what I’m looking for in an establishment in terms of hygiene and food quality. The food itself was average at best, low quality product, warm not hot when it came out and the eggs were undercooked. Coffee again was average, not a lot to say about it. The icing on the cake though that was the reason for this review I normally wouldn’t go out my way for. When entering the bathroom I saw what I assume is the manager, as he was busying himself in and around the staff and kitchen, not wash his hands when leaving then went right back to handing out one family’s food. Disgusting! Wouldn’t recommend

The service here is top notch, very friendly staff. However unfortunately that's where the good parts end. I have been to this Indian twice and both times it has given me food poisoning, kept me up all night, and in pain for a whole day afterwards. I have also been served chicken which was still raw in middle. They curry is also nothing special, and there prices are high for the quality, or lack off. I would avoid eating here

I use this pub often as I enjoy the company and sport on tv. This place basically has everything, good beer, food and atmosphere. Yeah the food isn't Michelin star level but it's great value for money. It can get a little noisy when the football /rugby is on but I've never witnessed any trouble or bad feelings. It is also dog friendly and has a special menu for dogs, including Sunday roast. Check their menu for prices because they have special deals for different days of the week.

My mum and I have been coming here for years and always been friendly staff and superb food, especially the cream teas! Haven't been for a year or so and decided to visit today, what a shock! Lovely tables and chairs are gone? Looks like a mis- match of furniture obtained out if a skip? Chairs ripped and nothing matching? Staff unfriendly, food awful! Used to get a scone of your choice with home made jam and clotted cream served in little ramekins now it's no choice of scone, roddas clotted cream that's rock hard and the smallest plastic jam portion! Coffee was like watery milk too? So so disappointed that this once lovely little tearoom looks like a dark and dingey old front room from the 70's! Girl on the till was quite unwelcoming and frosty! Such a shame.

Well what can we say other than “perfection !!” We have spent our Christmas day At The Elvetham and what a wonderful place it is. Mr Barry Tehrani and his team have looked after us so well , with a delicious meal , superb wines and the incredible ambiance just finishing it off perfectly . Everything served with a smile and nothing was too much trouble .This is our second visit in a month and we can’t wait of return once again . Thank you to everyone that has made Christmas 2024 so special for us.
