I visit Herne bay about five times a year. I used to go playing the Amusements in neptunes and used to eat lovely fish and chips there. They used to be free because I played the machines. When it closed I tried deans place as the chef worked there after neptunes closed. The fish was still nice.. Fast forward years and the fish portions seemed smaller. The last few times including this one the fish batter is softer. Fish was smaller and not as tasty
This time granddaughter saveloy was hard. Not like a saveloy taste imo. My fish was small slimy texture and soft batter insipid flavour and chips looked anaemically white. Nothing special to taste
.
. My wife's wasn't too bad but at nearly fifteen pounds each i won't ever go again.
Worst Chinese I’ve had in ages. Greasy prawn toasts, over-cooked sweet and sour pork, cooked in oil that clearly needed changing) and an odd-smelling Kung Po. The Chow Mein was the blandest I’ve ever tasted. There are far better Chinese takeaways in the area. Will not be back.
The location of this hotel is excellent - very central in Canterbury. There is parking at £15 a day at nearby multi storey. The rooms are large and bathrooms are good. The bed was a bit hard and if you felt the cold, there were no extra blankets or duvets. Rooms had large tv,ironing board and hair dryer and he hotel porvides plenty of towels and toiletries. There is a 24 hour bar with basic meals available.
Good range of food at breakfast but the fruit juice is watered down- tastes more like squash than juice and the egg is reconstituted - very much doubt its fresh real eggs. The cooked food was lukewarm.
I haven’t stayed in the hotel so based rating of rooms on pub areas. I’ve been to the pub a few times and had drinks in the garden. On a weekday visit a few years ago it was very quiet but on a Sunday afternoon recently it was very lively with a lovely atmosphere and a live guitarist who was amazing. It looks like it’s been redecorated since my last visit. Very pleasant garden. Lots of cocktails were not on offer but enjoyed what I did have and would return.
Had an excellent meal at The Royal Oak. Took advantage of their Tuesday free starter or dessert offer and had whitebait followed by a rump steak. Whitebait was excellent - very tasty and not too big. The steak was perfectly cooked to order and served with nice crispy chips with soft middles, onion rings, tomatoes. Beer was great as always. An excellent evening - thank you!
Food was unable at best and disgusting at worst and service was disappointing. Staff member split a drink over members of our party and offered no sort of compensation but instead came up to wipe the table constantly for the next 5 minutes
So this place looks great, really cool, historical building, staff were great , attentive and polite. Good atmosphere, but and I don’t know if we just choose the wrong meal or what but we had the pie and we opted for chips instead of mash simply because we had eaten a lot of mash that week!
The pie didn’t seem to be homemade or locally bought, to me it looked like it was a pukka pie or bought from Aldi. That wouldn’t bother me at all is the pastry hadn’t been rubbery, the pie had most definitely been microwaved of something as it just had such a weird texture. Filling tasted great (thank god). The chips- again I’ll be surprised if they weren’t McCain’s skin on oven chips, they were okay but disappointing , gravy, again it was clearly bisto. For £16 I expected a nicer meal, it was a huge portion so there was that saving grace and I looked at other peoples meals and they looked great so maybe it’s just the pie to avoid but honestly it was a poor meal for such a cool place.
I’ve ordered from King Kebab and Pizza many times over the last few years and I’m never disappointed by either their food or their service. Their pizzas are delicious and not too greasy, their chicken strips and BBQ chicken are cooked to perfection, their kebabs and wraps are delicious. They always deliver on time or a little earlier than expected, and their delivery drivers are always so polite. I highly recommend them.
Just recently moved to whitstable and found stubbled upon this place now it’s my favourite place to go. Lobster is the best I’ve ever tasted cocktails are the best I’ve ever had and some I’ve never seen before the corona Rita is definitely worth trying and the staff are amazing really helpful and fun
