Dean's Plaice in Canterbury

I visit Herne bay about five times a year. I used to go playing the Amusements in neptunes and used to eat lovely fish and chips there. They used to be free because I played the machines. When it closed I tried deans place as the chef worked there after neptunes closed. The fish was still nice.. Fast forward years and the fish portions seemed smaller. The last few times including this one the fish batter is softer. Fish was smaller and not as tasty This time granddaughter saveloy was hard. Not like a saveloy taste imo. My fish was small slimy texture and soft batter insipid flavour and chips looked anaemically white. Nothing special to taste . . My wife's wasn't too bad but at nearly fifteen pounds each i won't ever go again.

Lovely staff, great food, we were early in the evening hence the 4 stars as there were only a few customers, good tunes on the radio at a nice volume though.

We have been staying nearby over the bank holiday weekend and went to Whitstable to visit. Although there are plenty of fish and chips restaurants in the town we saw this restaurant on the way to the town. It was quieter, much more spacious, and there was plenty of parking rather than in town where it was much busier. The staff were super friendly and the food was generous and delicious. The one star less for the food is because the chips could be better. Overall, I definitely recommend it. Also, it's family and dog friendly with an outdoor patio when the weather is better. Also, there is a small playground, which i dont think is part of the restaurant near the patio.

This place is awful, went in for a small chips and a can of drink. The wanted £4.70, checked the price of a can and they wanted to charge £1.70 for a can ok Coke. I left the can and took the chips, got in the car and they were the worst chips ever bland, pale colour wet and soggy. That's £3 straight in the bin. Wish we hadn't bothered. Will not be returning here.

We had takeaway delivered. Took a very long time to get to us despite only being 5 minute drive away (we should have collected, to be fair). It included the saddest looking burger I've seen in a long time - so fatty it was stuck to the box, and it was just meat in a bun - no lettuce, tomato, onion, gherkin, anything. Just fatty meat. The fish was cold. Battered sausage was small and not pleasant. Only good thing was the Pukka Pie, because it was not made at Dean's.

Very expensive, tasteless fish and chips. Staff looked like they couldn’t care less. They didn’t have buns even though they advertised it their special burger. Didn’t have diet coke nor ice cream for their special milkshake. We waited +20 minutes for food and was an underwhelming experience. We will never go there again.

Collected our order today. 3 large chips plus various fish options. All 3 chip portions were different sizes and all smaller than usual.... Please don't skimp on the cheapest part of the meal! A price of £62 combined with a lot of pretty inedible chips and a few fish bones thrown in for good measure... it wasn't a great show from this 'Plaice'.

Reviews seem hit or miss but I can not fault the meal we had here this evening. Sausage and chips, burger and chips. All very nice in a clean restaurant 👍🏻

A 'Gourmet Burger' ??? Sorry guys but that was by far the worst burger I've ever had ! Partially burned, bone dry beef patties, no salad, no sauce, no cheese. I wouldn't even call that a burger. Not sure how you think this is OK to sell.

Great place to visit for a quick bite to eat

cooked very fresh fish so all was very hot, lemon wedge nice touch and washed down with probably best coffee I have had in a while. All very clean and friendly, we like it here and always return. A no rush atmosphere also.

Had chicken salad the chicken was burnt and dry it was inedible. Would not go back again

Upon arrival I was greeted by some sort of haunted dinner lady, I can only hope this was a Halloween get up that would explain the rest of the hills have eyes cast behind the counter, Deans chips are hard, pale and an insult to the potato. Wouldn’t go here again if I was starving.

Great little find. Friendly staff, great eating and parking area. Clean inside restaurant and toilets roomy. Buy one meal get one FREE the week we went, chips and fish were one of the BEST we’ve had. Definitely a revisit, the vlog is on my tiktok.

We have just eaten again in Deans Plaice, which we have again found to be excellent in food ordered and served and the members of staff who served us. We both enjoyed a mushroom omelette and salad, with the omelette cooked beautifully and the salad had so much in it and it was all presented so well on the plates. From our experience each time we have visited Dean’s Plaice, we would say to those who haven’t—you are missing out and we encourage you to go.

We only went there because our go-to place was closed. I placed my order as soon as I entered the the restaurant then stood back and waited..and waited..and waited, eventually one of the girls looked at me and asked what I was waiting for ?...a bus ? I told her what I was waiting for and suddenly it was ready. The fish had that overcooked soggy batter to it which matched the chips, the fish was dry and tasteless, please don't bother, there are far superior places in the town.

Can't say anything for service as my partner went in to order, but thought it very odd that our chips were only in a paper bag with no extra wrapping, get home with them (5 minutes tops) and they're stone cold, stale and barely a hint of salt or vinegar... we got chips here at the end of August and they were lovely, wish we'd gone down the road a moment to seven seas instead!

Staff were friendly but the food was not good. We had a portion of cod and chips each with a can of drink. The fish was very nice and fresh but unfortunately the chips were not!!!! They were so hard I couldn’t get my knife through them or bite them. I did ask for a replacement portion of chips which were a little better. We will not be returning here as the food was rather expensive for the portion size and really not enjoyable.

This was our first using Deans Plaice . Will definitely use it again . The portions were very generous and tasty .

Fish and chips were a huge portion but the mushy peas were stone cold. Dessert was diabolical and the staff we very laxed and we could not understand what they were saying. Definately not disabled friendly.

Stopped at Dean's for lunch with my 7 year old grandson. I had cod and chips, he had a chicken burger and chips. The service was faultless, the waitresses took a shine to James. The food was excellent. The wait was worth it as everything was freshly cooked. Overall highly recommended.

We decided to go out for a meal and chose Deans Plaice, and we were glad we did. The Staff were really welcoming, the restaurant itself is very spacious and comfortable and the menu quite extensive. We made our choice and the food arrived in good time and it was delicious. We also enjoyed a desert and the final bill was really reasonable.

Very small portion for £3. Terrible value. Very small portion size. It's a shame as the quality is good.

We got take out from here recently and everything from the service entering ( the atmosphere was awful) to ordering which seemed like it was at one of the Karen restaurants. The food for the quality is over priced, but Ive had worse fish n chips. Wouldn't recommend or return.

Used to be a rough-and-ready spot called Ernie's Place. Still similar food, same vibe, just a little bit more IKEA these days. Still good, though. Great, proper brekkie; normal-people food—a rarity in gentrified Whitstable where it is virtually all avocado on toast. There is a chippie next door. Which means great, fish-shop chips. Lovely jubbly.

While the rest of Whitstable was besieged by cars and no parking, we came upon this gem near the Aldi/M & S/Home Bargains Stores on the Thanet Way (perfect for a post shopping treat too). There was plenty of parking, the restaurant area was sparkling clean and airy and the staff were friendly, welcoming and efficient. The fish, chips and mushy peas were absolutely perfect and of generous portions. The cod was juicy, tasty and thick - the batter was hot and crisp. The best I have tasted. We have been here many times before and the standard has always been high. Well done.

We could have eaten in a half decent restaurant for the same price we spent on a fish supper take-out here. The chips were hard and the fish had spent so long under the heat lamps that the white flesh had turned brown, with a batter that resembled slime. Locals clearly know about the place as it was empty. I would say the food ended up in the dog but I have more respect for him than to feed him this junk. Keep on driving by there are some decent chip shops in town.

Portion size is very small for the price compared to other chip shops in Whitstable, but the fact you can park outside is handy

Ordered our food to be told well after I’d paid and my children had sat down and gotten comfortable that we had to order in a separate part with different prices - they waited to tell me this rather than to tell me as my children left to sit down. Absolutely no signs to show this which a member of staff agreed with. Cue upset, disappointed children and my own food going to waste due to having a pushchair so not being able to eat. We were told to sit outside - it was cold and on the verge of raining and I have two very young children. What I assume was the manager (old, blonde and piercing) was dismissive, rude and just had a bad attitude. She looked down her nose at customers which I clocked before we were even served. I was having a horrendous day with my mental health and being embarrassed like that tipped me over the edge, I left crying. She might want to remember that kindness costs nothing, there were lots of spare tables and she could’ve just let us sit there for 10 minutes due to their own lack of information. Horrible. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. My kids said the chips were gross too.

Buy from here on occassions (Whitstable) and food always been good today about 2.15pm brought fish and chips got home to find chips were undercooked and stale ended ip in the bin and the Cod and Rock were disappointing aswell batter hard

This “plaice” is an absolute gem. Fantastic, freshly cooked food with really good portion sizes. Staff are excellent and it’s all very reasonably priced. Lots of choice. It’s not “just” a chippy.

Stopped here on the way back from u12s football game. There was a large group of us and they were very accommodating. Food was very good and there's a large outside eating area. Will be coming back in the summer.

I went there tonight, spent over £38 on 4 take a way meals. Three different people dealing with the order. I questioned three times what had been wrapped and was assured everything was there. I again questioned if the sausages were in the bag only...

What a turn around! Fantastic place to sit down for a meal. Great decor, diner style booths and awesome all day breakfasts! Recommend.

Have often looked at this cafe when it was being refurbished. Well yesterday we popped in on our way back from Tankerton and aren't we please we did. Staff we very friendly service very fast and food was delicious. Will definitely be going back again . THANKS FOR A LOVLEY MEAL AND A FRIENDLY SERVICE.

£4.20 for a portion of chips and a can of pop. Absolutely ripped off. Chips under cooked too. You must avoid this place at all costs. There are better places down the hill. I'm writing this review because of greedy people. Why can't you learn not to rip people off? I did recommend this place to friends a little while ago..... Now I've unrecommended this horrible little chip shop. Goodbye

Fish & Chips ok, but have had better, however they don't wrap the chips, they just give them to you in an open bag not even folded over. The same with sausages just in an open bag, not good so suggest if you come here...

Call in and make your own mind up. My wife and I called in early on Saturday, prior to going out. We went into the clean, well laid out restaurant and were seated and given menus straight away. We had two portions of cod, chips...
