What great food! We were in Whistable for the first time and liked the look of the pub so gave it a try, and what a wonderful experience it was. We had the chicken caesar salad, seabass Thai curry and mackerel and each dish was a delight. Great place to for a pub lunch, friendly staff and beautifully decorated/maintained loos.

We are staying in Whitstable and checking out the local pubs and restaurants. We ran in to get out of the rain and had a drink in the bar over the bank holiday - the bar was busy but we were served quickly. We returned for a meal another night and shared the fisherman’s platter - really good mackerel and crab pates. We enjoyed the alternative sorbets - cherry and hibiscus, champagne mint and orange, strawberry and basil. Staff friendly and decor in the dining room lovely. Would recommend.

Nice pub, good atmosphere and lovely decor

We stayed at the Duke of Cumberland whitstable for 1 night from the 6th August to the 7th August and we can highly recommend this place. Room was lovely and clean and comfortable and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Service was excellent. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to stay there and we would definitely stay there again.

Rude staff who seem completely uninterested in their customers. Such a shame as used to be a fantastic place to drink but no it has lost its charm.

The food here is always fantastic. It's not cheap but it's worth every penny. Absolutely lovely pub, beautiful inside and the garden is a sun trap with a lovely spacious restaurant area too. The staff are so friendly and helpful too. Hannah has served us many times and she is an absolute delight, always cheerful and friendly and such a lovely person! Cannot fault this pub, absolutely love it and so glad it's my local!

Visited on a trip to Whitstable which we have visited over the years. Despite changes made which were much needed, found the pub to be terribly poorly organised. Staff seemed unhappy and unsure of their duties, layout was poorly executed with far too many tables and chairs in the space and really cheap table decorations which were ridiculous for an establishment charging high end prices. Several basic items not in stock - didn’t even have ketchup when asked to go with my chips. No atmosphere, no music or events to speak of during our stay and was informed they don’t really do that here anymore. Pub has clearly had a lot of investment recently but is not being run well at all and feels like corners are being cut to save money - probably to pay for the refurb!!

Had the crab thermidor, which unfortunately was lacking in flavour also had the squid which the light battered didn't taste like much either, I'd want to try it again the next time I visit still

Came in for a quiet drink. One member of staff on the bar and 8 tables of couples having drinks. Very quiet. I was Totally ignored when I popped to the bar and staff member was busy trying to pour a bottle of beer into a glass. Very poor service with no happy smiles and a feeling of only here cause it’s a job.

Literally had about 30 mins spare to eat before a wedding, asked the guys behind the bar if they could sort out 3 bowls of chips along with some alcohol to wash it down with and they came through despite being extremely busy. Great staff, very service. Would definitely eat and drink there again, although I'd allow myself more time in future.

Booked a room for a couple of days at the Duke of Cumberland. Booked a classic double bedroom. The bedroom was big and really clean and on the top floor with a good view of the high street. Breakfast was delicious and the staff were so friendly and attentive. Will definitely be back very soon.

Stopped here for lunch, shared a seafood platter, without the prawns, and a bottle of Pinot Grigio. The lack of prawns was explained whilst ordering so no issues there and the platter was made up with extra bits and peices. Food and wine we enjoyed, in a very pleasant and relaxed atmosphere with great service. Looks like the DofC has recently been refurbished all done very tastefully and to a high standard. Would definitely recommend.

Came for lunch yesterday and had a lovely afternoon in this pub. The waitress, Hannah, recommended the bream and it was delightful. Will definitely be back soon to try another one of their specials!

Beautiful restaurant with a unique decoration. Everything was very neat (including the sanitary facilities). The food was very tasty, the only minor comment was that the staff was very quick, but therefore seemed rushed.

Just popped in haven’t been in since refurb. Had the full English Breakfast in the Bar which was really good the poached eggs cooked to perfection. Staff really nice . Background music a bit bland . Decor really nice . Needs something to give it character back, although it had really gone down hill before the makeover . But it’s lacking something …

My wife and I, being whom we are, asked the question why a pub called the Duke of Cumberland is in Whitstable. Cumberland and Whitstable are hundreds of miles apart. Over a beer and a wine, with the help of the Internet, we learnt a lot and made the visit to this interesting pub well worth it. We will leave it up to you, dear readers, to do as much exploring on the interweb, as one of Judie Dench's characters calls it, as you wish about one of George II's sons. For Hazel and I, it made that half hour of our lives together on a soggy June Tuesday afternoon in Whitstable memorable. 🤗

Had a great meal two nights running. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Ate in the bar as we had two dogs with us. Good atmosphere and will definitely return.

Highly recommend the fish and chips. The haddock was fresh and tasty, the batter was crispy, and it came with a side of home-made mushy peas too.

We had such a lovely breakfast this morning! It was a bank holiday so it was busy, as to be expected, and the main restaurant was fully booked but the staff were more than happy to seat us in the bar area. The coffees were so amazing we drank them quite quickly and were happy sat chatting. Our waitress came over to apologise for the delay on the food (we were expecting a wait anyway as we could see how busy the restaurant was) and offered us a round of complimentary drinks which was a really lovely gesture. When the food came it was also amazing and the constant check-ins from the staff really made our breakfast an enjoyable experience, we'll definitely be back😊

Really nice place. Very nice well done food with quick service. Was well looked after. Indoor and outdoor space, friendly to dogs. It was only afternoon meal but would definitely go back for some drinks and even consider stay over in future.

Beautiful and spacious place. The kitchen is outstanding, perfectly prepared, delicious and beautifully presented food. We had a child with severe allergies with us - not only did they take great care that no allergens were in the food, they even prepared a special variant that he could eat. Highly recommended!

Nice food but expensive. But great staff.

I can only comment on the beer as that's all we had. For a Shepherd Neame pub I expected both a good selection of Kentish ales and good quality but got neither. Disappointed 😞

Fantastic food, service slow. If more attention was paid by the waitresses we would have spent more on drinks. Our empty glasses stood for ages. The fantastic food made up for this.

A bad start when we were asked to move tables in favour of another customer who had specifically requested the one that we had been given. Air-con blowing cold air at me. Chicken breast with bone sticking out!! was very dry. Brûlée not set. Sea bass not trimmed properly. So what promised to be a lovely meal in a good setting proved to be a great disappointment.

Popped in on the off chance for a lunch sat in the dog friendly bar area. Ordered a Sunday roast. Beef was good. Side vegetables in bowl which had been microwaved but fine. cauliflower cheese would have been extra. Yorkshireshad been prepared early and we're a bit tough. Fine for an off the cuff lunch but if I had been looking forward to a roast I think I would have been disappointed. Service was friendly and the refurbishment looked good.

Menu since a previous visit has been completely changed...appalled that it was virtually all fish (even the salad and pasta no good for vegetarian/vegan!) or else had loads of nuts (so no go for nut allergies). As local unless things change, won't be returning....

Came here for my birthday as they have spent a lot of money on doing up the pub and it is very well done . We had a very nice meal in the restaurant fish and chips and burger and chips and they were both very nice. The waitress Rosie was very good and she provided good service the puddings where very good along with cocktails and beer a great pub and will be back again also the price was good everything as good a nice pub

Great food and customer service. We had Pork belly. Crackling was amazing and great flavour in meat. Highly recommend sea bream. Cooked to perfection and sauce worked really well with it. Fish and chips was great portion and flavour.

All around pleasure to visit this perfect 10/10 gastro pub. The food was the best I have ever had at a venue like this. The staff and service were impeccable and the food was excellent. The whole atmosphere was fantastic. Well done the whole team. Will be making this a regular spot.

Perfect stay in a convenient location with top class food...excellent service..especially by Hannah..and a modern and comfortable room with everything you need..already planning our next stay.

The room is great and everything looks clean and well maintained. (There was some sick in the gents and 30 min later it had been cleaned.) The food however is well below the £40 pp you will end up spending, incl. service and 1 drink each. Out of 4 fish on the menu, they had "run ot"' of 3, at 6 pm on a Saturday night... I thought, meh, I'm vegetarian anyway, never mind. The poor waiters looked even more embarrassed than the customer, clearly they didn't look too thrilled to work here. The nibbles were fine, the deserts were bland but passable, the mains were very poor indeed. My partner had the mussels, which don't even come with fries. There must have been about 10 in the tiny pot, quite strong iodine taste I'm told, and the sauce tasted like a spash of cream with water. I had the tofu with an overbearing pseudo-Chinese sauce which would win no star in a substandard school canteen. In short: not impressed, yet expensive. Just go there for a drink and the jolly atmosphere, then have your dinner elsewhere.

The food arrived in good time time and the pub had a nice atmosphere BUT don’t have the crab and crayfish linguine unless you like a dry pasta with a ton of chilli. I couldn’t taste any other ingredients except chilli. When I complained to the chef that it was extremely spicy hot but tasteless, I was told that I as it had chilli listed, as one of the many ingredients, they would not give me an alternative. My dish was returned uneaten. Complete waste of money. I won’t be back after this first and only visit.

The breakfast as part of our stay was outstanding! Great variety, cooked to perfection. Very impressed. Would stay there again just for the breakfast!

Reasonably pleasant atmosphere, but not at all cosy. The food was okay, but the roast chicken dinnner that i had was a bit ordinary. The dessert, a chocolate and raspberry tart, was very nice. The waiters were good and everything for our party of 8 arrived together.

Popped in for a quick pint of something local. Wasn't the quietest of pubs - lots of kiddies about with mummies taking the tables for colouring lol - PS - mind the step in the loo!

Used the Shepherd Neame winter offer. Very good value for money. The room we stayed in was very luxurious. The evening meal was excellent as was the breakfast. All the staff were amazing, must mention Tina. Hope to come back soon.

Superb food and excellent service. The staff were attentive and very efficient without being intrusive. The food was freshly cooked and not without flair. The new management is making a real impact and had raised it's game in keeping with the fine restaurants in the town.

Stayed here for the night following a friends 50th. The room was very nice having just been recently refurbished. Staff are very friendly, can certainly recommend staying here.

Visited for a NY eve meal with my partner's son. Food was actually delicious, well prepared and presented. The only glitch was the sprouts. 😄

Good pub grub and reasonable priced drinks

We were a party of seven on Christmas Day . The food was mediocre and the portions were not large. There was no effort in the part of the staff to make it a special occasion for guests despite the meal costing £100 per head . What was most off-putting was the way the waiting staff expected us to pass our used plates to them when they came to clear the table in between courses . Whilst I have no objection to assisting with this , the staff acted almost as if it were our duty to do this and I even ended up apologising for being a bit slow off the mark to pass my plate as I was in conversation with my friends ! I would not hurry to repeat the Christmas Day experience although we have visited the restaurant on a previous occasion and had better service and better food .

The outside building is really nice. The inside is a little tired and unfortunately the food isn’t great but expensive. Probably a nice pub for a summer beer.

We only had drinks but they were good value and the atmosphere and decor was lovely and very festive Updated: we had Sunday roast here and it was lovely, everything tasted freshly cooked and piping hot. The cauliflower cheese was delicious too! The dining room area is really nice.

Newly refurbished pub, restuarant and hotel. We ate on a Saturday evening. It was busy, food was good service good from newly appointed staff. Decor pretty good too. You'll need to book at peak times. Table time is limited. Check when booking. Also service is added.

If you're a fan of dog fighting you'll love it here. Every second customer brings their pet for some reason, and as they squeeze in as many tables as possible, chaos ensues. The food is mediocre at best, unless you work for Kent online and get it for free with boarding. Beer is great, they've obviously sorted the cellar since Tony had it. If you can handle the dog madness it's worth a pint or two.

Ordered a chicken salad. Started to eat and found some fish in it by mistake. Not happy as I don't eat fish. All that happened was the waitress took it away and got a fresh meal. Not sorry at all. I had already paid for the meal. So they got their money ok. Not even a free drink. Good job I do not have allergies. Poor show to a nice pub.

Really nicely refurbished pub. Good selection of ales and beers. The food is very good. We had excellent smiley service from our waitress Hannah. She recommended the chicken special dish. It was excellent. We will return here on our next visit

Recently and beautifully refurbished. It's now more of a pub serving food than a drinkers pub. Not an issue, it was just the other way round before the refurb.

First time here having lunch today - Hannah was fantastic and recommended us the butchers board which was lovely, will definitely be back!

Same experience as other reviewers - ordered using the app only to be told it couldn't process food orders and the payment wouldn't be taken. Payment was subsequently taken and no phone calls answered for a refund. Shocking!

Avoid!! Used app to order food and drink. Drinks came, 1 hr later no food. Went to ask staff for update. Advised app doesn't work (even though it took the payment) so order not been placed. Why didnt they tell us when they brought the drinks over? They said we'd be refunded for the food automatically. 3 days later no refund so I've been charged £45 for nothing and noone answering the phone. Complete a scam.

Recently refurbished to a very high standard. Very stylish and a great improvement to how it was before! Clean, chic with lots of fabulous seating inside & out. Courtyard is sublime particulary on a balmy evening. Great menu, lots of choice. Staff very friendly and welcoming. On a Sunday lunchtime you will definitely have to book as busy, busy, busy. One of the nicest pubs I have visited and I have visited many. Well done Shepherd Neame!

Do not go here for food!! We visited this place with expectations high after the refurbishment and looking forward to seeing if there had been a decent place to eat added to our home town. The answer was absolutely not. We entered the restaurant area and gave the name we had booked under, the woman at the desk pointed at a table across the restaurant and told us that was ours. Fair enough, may have been busy with something so we sat ourselves down, no cutlery on the table and no drinks offered. Another woman came over a few minutes later and "very begrudgingly" took our drinks order. When my mother asked for a specific request on her drink this waitress rolled her eyes as if we weren't paying for the privilege of being in her presence. Anyway she took the order and our drinks arrived shortly after with the same side order of attitude and moody demeanour from our less than cheerful waitress. We decided to go for a sharing platter which was £26 each or two for £40. We decided to go for two as it seemed like a good deal but how wrong we were. We ordered one meat and one fish sharing platter so that we could have abit of each between us. The platters arrived in what can only be described as a big metal dog bowl that you were expected to eat from because there were no side plates offered at all. Besides the lack of crockery there was also a distinct lack of food on the "sharing" platter, the only way this can be classed as a sharing platter is if you are sharing with someone on hunger strike because this would barely be enough to fill one person and if any food was left over it would be because it is bulked out with bread and garnish rather than any meat or fish. Its a massive shame that this almost iconic whitstable pub hasn't managed to get it right because you couldn't wish for a better location if only its done properly. To summarise, if you're walking through whitstable and you fancy a snack you'll be better off going into sainsbury in the highstreet and getting a meal deal and sitting on the sea wall while you look out at the gorgeous views. You'll be more fulfilled and not left wondering if you've ever met that woman who served you before and upset her in any way. Don't waist your money!!!

Very good-had lemon sole- lovely if pricey. Good refit and great court yard. Will return. A good job done.

Popped in on a quiet weekday morning for coffee, and also got the eggs royale which was delicious and a generous portion size. Great breakfast with friendly staff, and lovely new decor inside too! Look forward to trying more of the menu.

Wow!! What a transformation!! We never really went to the 'Duke' much before, but that will certainly change now. The pub is now very modern and welcoming. The food and the service was all very good, a nice selection of beers and a great ambience. We enjoyed lunch out in the beer garden, but the inside restaurant also looked very tempting, so we will be back at a not so later date to enjoy their hospitality once more.
