We went for a leisurely lunch. Located near Whitstable Castle and Gardens and a short walk to Tankerton beach/bay, it's not far to get to the High Street either. We started with shucked oysters and beef battered oysters along with a fish croquette to share as starters. Absolutely delicious. This was followed by fish and chunky chips and moules and french fries. The fish was amazing though the mussels were a bit overcooked. Finally, we shared the cheese board of locally sourced cheeses - Somerset brie, tangy cheddar and a creamy blue cheese served with different crackers, grapes, pickled walnuts, pickle, celery and figs. Yum yum yum. All washed down with a big pot of tea. Definitely recommend another visit.

Our 3rd stay at The Hotel Continental and won't be our last. They do a lovely freshly cooked breakfast. We ate in the restaurant one evening during this stay and had fresh oysters followed by the catch of the day (cod) beer battered with chunky chips which were both lovely. The kitchen in open plan so you can see everything being prepared for you. Its a fairly short stroll into the town from here if you go to the left or you can follow the coastlines flat paved walk on the right towards Tankerton with pretty beach huts along the way which is very popular with dog walkers and runners too.On our final evening we were treated to a beautiful sunset across the sea viewed from the hotel.

I live 150m away from this hotel and visit it during the winter when it's quiet , the menu never changes and there is no speacils boards. The waitresses try their best but the manager has no idea about running a hotel , they are quite happy to sell expensive wi ne but due to the glasses might as well serve it in a plastic cup and talking to the so called manager who has no idea about resturant etiquette had no idea about wine and the correct glasses it should be served in. Imaginative, varied and comprehensive menu. Excellent seafood chowder. Delicious sourdough homemade bread. Baked cod was unusual and tasty. Average prices. Friendly attentive staff. Competent chef and staff. Very spacious and comfortable tables, seaview, warmly heated, some leather sofas in areas, kitchen cooking area open plan, and pleasant bar area. We visited the restaurant several times in the past and it has always been a pleasure. If the restaurant is not busy it is a comfortable venue to sit and relax. I notice Friday and Saturday evenings there is a variety of live music from 6.30 pm. Not attended those.

We walked in some time past 4 pm. There were two staff members working behind the bar. The male seemed experienced and familiar with the place, the female seemed a bit lost and nervous, probably new to the job. The queue was long and they were busy. We were looking to book for dinner. We’ve waited about 15 minutes but we’re not acknowledged by the staff. We wondered around the bar and restaurant as well as outdoor area but didn’t manage to find any other staff members. We continued waiting near the bar, however, the two people continued being busy behind the bar. We noticed there was a large notebook opened on the table with reservations and notes, so we decided to leave a note to the staff members, under bookings sections, with our names and number and time we were interested and a note saying that if they have table available, to please give us a call. Half way through writing the note, the female run towards us starting to shout loudly and very aggressively “what are you doing”, “this is a private property”, “leave it alone” over and over again and slammed the notebook closed and continued yelling very angrily. We were in shock and thought that she completely overreacted. She behaved as if we did something really terrible, or committed a crime. It left us feeing really uncomfortable and we tried explaining but she didn’t not listen and just continued yelling and run off behind the bar. Of course, we didn’t come back and not planning on trying again. It was on Friday 7th April at circa 4.30 pm that we left that place. We were so glad we’ve learned up front about the way staff treats clients and very very bad customer service (or the lack of one). We ended up having amazing pizza and wine that evening and were grateful that we didn’t waste any time or money in Continental Hotel Restaurant.

We wandered in here for a late lunch and I plumped for the moules and frites, while my husband went for the salmon platter. The food was really tasty, everything was fresh and the service was great. We returned a couple of nights later for dinner (there's a dearth of good places to eat in Whistable) and this time I had the baked cod while my husband had the hake. The fish was cooked beautifully and we couldn't find anything to fault. Would highly recommend.

We reserved a table in this hotel brasserie when booking our hotel room because we were not sure where we might eat the first evening of our stay, nor how busy the local restaurants might be. As it turned out, booking was probably not required. Tables were of the wooden bench type and the chairs were hard after a while. We were in the part of the restaurant with the open plan kitchen and, consequently, it was quite noisy due to the banging of plates and pans. Our table overlooked the sea but the surroundings were not particularly ambient. When reserving the table, I had requested one in a quiet location. We had the cod and chips at £19 and the gnocchi at £15. Both were very hot and very enjoyable, though the cod batter might have been a little overdone. There was a good selection of wines by the bottle and glass. A 10% service charge was added automatically to the bill. Pleasingly, the restaurant did accept cash! Service was friendly but with variable attentiveness. We enjoyed our meal but found the menu choice a little limited and would have struggled to find something different we liked on a second night so we ate elsewhere.

Sadly this will be last time we will come to restaurant- now over priced and reduced portions (the steak meal no sides, garnish or sauce unless you pay extra now). Very disappointed as this was favourite first go to restaurant.

We came here for a family birthday, the food was great but quite over priced for what it is. The service however was rather shocking, kept trying to catch their eye to get another drink, it wasn't even busy. The waitresses were too busy eating the food at the kitchen area rather than serving it. We ended up having to go up to ask for the bill as we got fed up of waiting, we were then told it's card only and they don't accept cash at all. It would have been nice to be told this when we booked the table!

When I was ignored by the person serving when I asked for rare beef I should have smelt a rat. The beef was pre-sliced and then reheated, But far worse were the vegetables, so undercooked they were almost raw - except for the broccoli which was so dry that it too was inedible. Just as well the portions were so small - half a carrot. The roast potatoes were just about ok, but in total I got two halves of a small potato. The worst Sunday lunch I have had for a long, long time.

If you have a family that all want something completely different to eat and have a collection of allergies/diet requirements this could be your place. The menu (& bar menu) are all available in the restaurant so you can stretch from traditional (trendy) Sunday roast, burgers (veggie & meat), oysters/fish & chips to sandwiches. Puddings all appeared to come with nuts but when allergies mentioned - waitress was great at identifying what options were interchangeable. Specials often available. Beer choice - has to be Whitstable ales - good selection of other drinks on offer. Personally I prefer sitting in bar or service area for additional buzz but to guarantee a table need to book in restaurant. Prices OK -@ £120 for 5 mains, drinks & combination of coffees/desserts. Great for big and small groups.

I spend 30-40 days a year at hotels across England and Europe and generally they are very disappointing experiences when eating “in house”. Finally I have an exception. The Brasserie “set menu” is fairly dull/standard except that to course the traditional Whitstable oysters. I broke my oyster virginity of a grilled oyster starter and wasn’t disappointed.Main course was cooked beautifully. Chicken supreme, nothing overly different, but really well cooked and presented.Service was exceptional. My table looked over the open kitchen and it was a pleasure to watch the chefs in action.Best of all, it was far from over priced.Huge recommend from a 90% negative reviewer with high expectations.

We’ve been going to The Conti for 20+ years and in that time we’ve seen many changes - mostly for the better. We went there on Wednesday evening for my birthday and hence booked a table with a sea view for 6 o’clock. The waitress who received us seemed in a hurry and offhand. When we queried the first offer of a table, which didn’t have much of a view, she agreed that we could have a table upstairs, with a lovely view of the sea and “The Turner sunset”. The waitress took ages to take the drinks order and this wine took a long time to arrive. We decided to have olives and almonds as a starter. After another very long wait I decided to chase it up, especially as at that stage (7 o’clock) the whole place was very quiet. The waitress responded quite curtly “It’s coming and there are a number of tickets before yours”. They then came quickly. The mains were well up to their usual high standard and after that point we were looked after by Jacob, who was much more attentive and seemed to care!Good service can make or break an evening and the second part saved the day. Jacob seemed efficient, friendly and is an asset to the place!

We have eaten at the restaurant many times and often the food and service have been excellent (hence our frequent visits). Recently, the standard of the food has gone seriously down and we have experienced extremely long waits. So too this evening. Only two of us ordering a main course, the restaurant was not full, but we had to wait over 40 minutes to be served, no-one came to inform us what was going on - when I asked, I was told "that everything was cooked from fresh"(!!) - actually by the time my John Dory fillets arrived they were far from fresh as they had sat under the hot lamp for at least 10 minutes! The portion was so small that I had to have a sandwich when I got home, the fish was served with a small portion of greens and a small spoonful of some red substance. My partner had hake served with a handful of undercooked, untrimmed green beans and some steamed baby potatoes on a pool of red sauce (meant to be chorizo based, perhaps it was pureed?) - all extremely disappointing and underwhelming, there was nothing delicious about this meal, it seemed that no care at all had been taken and it was not cheap (about £15 per dish). What a shame that the standard of cooking has dropped to this level. It is also my sense that the restaurant was understaffed so the service was inattentive though not necessarily bad, I think they were doing their best. We shall not be rushing back there despite it's fantastic location.

We pre-booked lunch at this hotel for my mum-in-law’s birthday. My in-laws are both in their 70s. The restaurant was not busy. My father-in-law asked if he could have an egg with his steak instead of the peppercorn sauce. A simple request you would think. The waitress can back and said the chef had said no. We questioned why and the waitress said it was ‘the principle’. What the heck does that mean!? A chef refusing to fry an egg to please a customer out of principle. After asking for a bottle of wine the same waitress told us that we couldn’t have the wine we asked for because they didn’t have it. When we made a joke she walked away rolling her eyes, moaning about us to other staff behind the bar and the rest of the meal was served by someone else! Very unprofessional and made us feel uncomfortable. I enjoyed my food, my husband said his was average (prawns small and chips late coming out and over cooked). My father-in-law enjoyed his steak (despite not getting his egg!) and the kids enjoyed their burgers. Disappointed that a simple request was dealt with in such an unhelpful manner. We politely provided constructive feedback which unbeknownst to us apparently upset the young waitress. I have no idea why as it was very evenly provided and we were not rude, or even angry and they asked for our feedback, we didn’t seek anyone out. The chef then approached us and was really quite aggressive. I’ve never experienced that before in 20 years of working within customer service. Shocking approach and she should not be working in a customer facing role if she feels that was acceptable. Shame as ruined what was otherwise an enjoyable day. Looks to be a theme for this venue looking at the other feedback on here.

Anniversary dinner at venue of our wedding reception 54 years ago. The service was excellent and our meal truly enjoyable. We had starters of mackerel a and plaice goujons mains of an excellent cooked and garnished turbot and sweet of mixed fruit crumble. The whole experience was very good and as we are again locals will return with family . Having eaten in restaurants around the world can highly recommend The Continental

We called in on our way back from Ramsgate as we wanted to check the place out as we are joining a wedding party here in early Autumn 2018. The bar lounge was heaving with guests and so with no spare seats we sat in the quieter restaurant area. They had a large party of ladies in as well so for early in the week this place was impressively busy.

We had a lovely overnight stay at this hotel. The room was beautiful and clean with a great view out over the bay. The staff were delightful and helpful. We dined in the main restaurant where the seafood and oysters were of great quality - well cooked and well prepared. I would definitely stay here again.

We arrived at the end of service and they still seated and served us - we were not rushed at all! The food was sublime! There was plenty of fish on the specials menu but I think a few more meat options wouldn’t have gone a miss. It was also a shame to see that the main menu has changed and rather than them being reprinted someone had just crossed options out.

We were lucky enough to be invited to attend the 2nd Tasting Menu night. Really was a fantastic effort by the young chefs and fair play to the Hotel for giving them chance to show off their skills. Lots of highlights popcorn cockles; the sea bass dish and the panna cotta all stand out for me. Give this a go and good luck to the young chefs

We were privileged to be able to book a table at the Hotel Continental restaurant for their first taster menu last Wednesday. There was a genuine air of excitement and anticipation as the 20+ diners waited to be seated.... and what a treat we were in for!! Eight delicious, exquisite courses; a fabulous mix of tastes and textures brought to our tables by a fabulous team of young staff who genuinely cared that all went well. A real team event and even when one chef badly burnt his hand after just the third course, such was their dedication and focus, they all continued to a resounding round of applause at the end of the evening. Really impressed, really superb night.

Meals were average, service was ok but slow (this was due to the food being cooked fresh according to the menu). Not great value for money in my opinion but the staff were very friendly and helpful.

A concise selection of well prepared and presented fish served in an informal setting. Other choices available but when at the seaside why order chicken. Good quality ice cream also.

My wife and I met family for a meal last Saturday evening. I had the Mussels a la creme and Frites with a garlic Foccaia. I can safely say it was one of the best pub/hotel, call it what you will, meals I can remember having, and I spend plenty of time eating out. I appreciate that in theory, Mussels, chips and garlic bread are not the hardest things to cook, but all of our meals were faultless, and my food particularly was stunning. For dessert, I had a Panna Cotta with candied Pistachios and Passion Fruit seeds. Again simple, but stunning. Food produced by someone who gave a damn!! Well done. My daughter is now at Uni. in Canterbury and I will certainly be coming back when I can.

We were staying very close to this restaurant at bank holiday weekend however didn't initially plan on eating here, but after last minute phoning round of the higher ranked TripAdvisor restaurants in the area and realising everything was fully booked we thought we'd give The Hotel Continental a try. I'm really pleased we did! We had a lovely evening, the staff were friendly and attentive and the food was tasty and good portion sizes! It was reasonably priced meal and worth every penny. I would happily return and recommend a meal here.

As an avid user of TripAdvisor, we almost missed this place as it was not in the top 30 restaurants in Whitstable, but as it was literally on our doorstep (holiday let), we gave it a go and I am very glad we did! Great setting with an amazing view and perfect for a quiet dinner which we thoroughly enjoyed. Really nice food, local beer and reasonably priced wine, combined with the thoroughly friendly and welcoming staff make this restaurant well worth a visit and if back in Whistable, we shall definitely be back again!

I do not know why we haven't eaten here before, but have now been 4 times in the past month. It's a great light, uncluttered space. Standard menu supplemented with a range of specials. I have had the steak which was cooked medium rare perfectly. Monkfish off the specials which was just amazing and at £15 a real bargain. The house wine at £16.50 a bottle is very good value too.

I used to love coming here on a weekend, sit outside, look at the sea, enjoy the view, have some oysters and some nice main afterwards. Things have changed since then I'm afraid. The service has never been that great and that's not changed. The food has changed but it's still not bad. My only issue is the service which needs some work. Also the price is a bit high.Overall however, it is a nice place to have oysters and enjoy the view!

This is a lovely hotel, the rooms are very well furnished and decorated. The shower was distinctly average. Beds are comfy, however you struggle to sleep because of the most annoying buzzing noise. Breakfast was nice however the tables are slow to be cleared. All in all I would recommend this hotel.

It's a limited menu, but it's always well done and enough to have an interesting selection to suit all needs. Meat, fish, vegetarian and shellfish. They also have a daily menu that is, always interesting and great to eat. Not so long ago they had a 'mackerel scotch egg', which was bread crumb mackerel wrapped around an egg and then lightly fried. When it came to the table the noise of the knife just breaking the crust of the bread crumbs meant it was going to be spectacular. As it was. Go and enjoy a nice meal in a relaxed atmosphere. BTW they allow non-guest to come for breakfast and this is £12.50. A bit high. However when I've eaten at other places for £8.50 (fine breakfasts) the actual price when you add additional coffee etc comes in at about the same as the continental. But, the continental throws in unlimited portions of great breakfast food, coffee and even kippers. All for £12.50!
